Greetings from Air Rock Patrol:

I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy a 3 day weekend. Thanks for coming along our daily journey to Rock & Roll Island.

Before we get to our flight I have to get serious for a moment. Alexei Cherepanov, a 19-year-old draft pick of the National Hockey League New York Rangers passed away. Details were not very strong but it is thought to be heart related. The tragedy gets worse. It is believed the facility he was playing in (overseas) did not have an ambulance on the premises. They lost 15-20 minutes of time waiting for one to arrive. To his family the deepest sorrow.

Rock & Roll today comes in picture form. Thank you to Rob Mayes from the U.K. for letting me show his great work!

I have always enjoyed avant garde films whether they be from the past or student experimentation. When I was growing up one of our local tv stations used to broadcast local short films and animations every Saturday night at midnight. The thing I like so much more about student films and avant garde films is that you get a glimpse into the world and experiences of the filmmaker.

A couple of years ago when I was living in Chicago there was a theater I enjoyed visiting, Facets Cinematheque on Fullerton. One film I saw there that really stuck with me was Vera Chytilová's Daisies, a Czech New Wave film from 1966. The two young female protagonists have decided to rebel against their patriarchal war filled society.

They steal, use men, and eat all they want while still looking fabulous. I think this film really resonated with me at the time because I was so unhappy with my world when I lived in Chicago that I also lived by these rules of excess and anarchy, ignoring all societal norms. But this is a film I would recommend because it is visually so interesting. Below is a clip:

Does anyone have some suggestions for other avant-garde films you may enjoy. I always enjoy checking out new movies to put in my Netflix queue.

As Uncle Sam printed billions of new dollars to bail out AIG, the failing financial giant’s top hogs gobbled up more than $400,000 on a junket, according to news reports. While that much money might be enough for many of us to retire somewhere shy of our 80th birthdays, it’s only a drop in the trough for these folks. Golden parachutes in the nine-figure range enable these piggy-pirates to enjoy soft landings, leaving shareholders --- including our pension funds --- and we taxpayers and our children (and, no doubt, grandchildren) to cover the losses caused by their greed and incompetence.
And Obama wonders why some of us here in depressed Pennsylvania may fondle our guns with a certain wistful affection.
Do these porcine gluttons ever have to pay for their sins? The answer is “yes, sometimes they do.” For example, several former AIG and affiliated execs were convicted in a federal court in Connecticut of securities fraud and mail fraud in May. In this case, according to the federal district judge, “The defendants were convicted of crimes associated with a loss portfolio transfer reinsurance transaction between Gen Re and AIG. Four of the defendants-Ferguson, Garand, Graham, and Monrad-are former Gen Re executives; the remaining defendant, Milton, is a former AIG executive. Count One charged all five of the defendants with participating in a conspiracy to commit securities fraud, to make and cause to be made false and misleading statements in reports filed with the SEC, to falsify and cause to be falsified the books and records of a public company, and to commit mail fraud, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 371.” In other words, they lied to the SEC and the public to make their firms’ assets look more valuable than they actually were.
According to Reuters, last month “In a sentencing memorandum…, prosecutors argued that sentences for the five defendants should be stiffer than the range of 168 months to 210 months calculated in a pre-sentence report. The government also said losses to AIG investors could be estimated at more than $400 million -- with the government's expert calculating fraud-related losses as much as $1.4 billion -- a factor that should enhance the defendants' sentences.” The memorandum is still under consideration, so far as I can tell. Here’s hoping the judge sees things the government’s way.
In addition to such criminal cases, we can anticipate plenty of litigation on the civil side, too, in the wake of the financial pigpen’s collapse. Here’s one example, from the June 13, 2007, edition of Market Watch [http://www.marketwatch.com]:
“American International Group Inc. (AIG) Wednesday sued its ousted Chairman Maurice R. ‘Hank’ Greenberg and ex-Chief Financial Officer Howard I. Smith for more than $1 billion in damages stemming from accounting troubles on their watch.”
Another class action suit, called In re American International Group Securities Litigation was described a federal judge in Manhattan this way last July:
“This litigation was commenced more than three-and-a-half years ago when putative class actions were filed in this Court on October 15, 2004. The putative class actions alleged that AIG and certain of its officers and directors violated the securities laws by failing to disclose AIG's participation in bid-rigging and contingent commission schemes (alleged in a complaint by the New York Attorney General against Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc.). The proposed class period in these actions was October 28, 1999 through October 13, 2004. On February 8, 2005, this Court consolidated the cases and appointed Ohio Funds as lead plaintiff. On April 19, 2005, lead plaintiff filed a Consolidated Amended Class Action Complaint, which included allegations pertaining to the same bid-rigging and contingent commission schemes, as well as newly-disclosed allegations of accounting improprieties involving defendant General Reinsurance Corp.”
Plaintiffs include public employee and teachers’ retirement funds and the like. Defendants again include good ‘ol Hank Greenberg.
If all this seems too much to take in, you’re not alone. I plan to follow these lawsuits for you into the future. For now, suffice to say that, when I was still practicing law in Philly, I knew lawyers who made their livings chasing down such pilfering piggies on behalf of we hapless shareholders and would-be retirees. The Enron crimes of the last decade resulted in similar suits, which recovered quite a bit of what had been stolen by Enron’s criminal execs. CEO Kenneth Lay escaped prison by dying.
Someone less charitable than me might wish the same for some of the hogs who have benefited personally from the shenanigans that led up to our present predicament.

Welcome to Rock Island:

How was the weekend? Did you do anything nice? Saturday I found the Red Sox/Rays playoff game fascinating. The season has been a living fantasy for Tampa Bay and a loss on Saturday would have made any hope for further advancement slim and non. They won in extra innings and are now tied one game apiece in the best four out of seven. Good for them and cool for baseball. Yes, it is hard to watch without the Yankees being involved.

Thanks for all the airmails already how much you liked the version of J.P.P. McStep B. Blues that we played on Sunday's flight. You can look to the right side of the page and check that out if you missed it as well as a myriad of other rock and roll treats. Always cool to catch up on everything Jefferson, Beatles, Cream, etc.

Movie Review: One Million Years B.C.

I miss the prehistoric age, when primitive cave men dressed in furs grunted and hit each other with clubs. Oh the life-- one minute, killing a wild boar, the next, scooped up by a gigantic pterodactyl. Wait... if there were two things I learned in high school science class, they were a) there is no God, only the Beagle and b) dinosaurs and cavemen never met once over the course of Earth's history (unfortunately).

One Million Years B.C. is a Hammer Films Production, which means B-movie. We follow a band of stupid cavemen operating under one "alpha male", who's leadership amounts to grunting and getting to eat first, with pain of a beating for those who disobey. When one dashing Jesus-like caveman (John Richardson) is banished from the clan, he roams the vast wasteland of Earth, chased by giant lizards and turtles, eventually meeting a hottie cave woman (Raquel Welch). The plot is just filler for showing off Ray Harryhausen's special effects, which include stop-motion pterodactyls and triceratops, and obviously a giant tarantula-- and displaying Raquel Welch's assets, which are top-notch.

Harryhausen's effects and Wilkie Cooper's camerawork create an inaccurate but stupidly enjoyable prehistoric landscape, even with the boldly out-of-control tagline, "This is the Way It Was". A decent film shines throw the darkness of the dialogue, and as far as B-movies go, One Million Years B.C. is not that bad-- in fact, it's a hilarious dose of blasphemy: There is no intelligence in the caveman's design.

La letra en inglés que canta Barbra es de Johnny Mercer. Esta grabación está disponible en uno de los mejores discos de Streisand. "Je M'appelle Barbra" fue grabado en 1966 con arreglos y dirección de Michel Legrand. La mayoría de las fotos que usé son de las sesiones de grabación de ese disco, y las mezclé con material de archivo de la ciudad de París en otoño. La primera foto es de la sesión realizada con el fotografo de modas Richard Avedon para la portada del disco.

The perfect time of the year for on of the best Barbra Streisand recordings ever: "Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes)". This famous song was written by Jacques Prévert and composed by Joseph Kosma. The English lyrics were written by Johnny Mercer. The track is available on one of Barbra's best albums. "Je M'appelle Barbra" was released in 1966 and arranged and conducted by Michel Legrand. I used mostly photographs taken during the recording of the album mixed with archive footage of Paris. The opening image is from the album cover session with fashion photographer Richard Avedon.

Want to drive the 1966 Mustang coupe owned by James Earl Ray (who assisinated Martin Luther King) or the 1980 Mustang owned by Bette Davis? Or are you looking for another georgous yet less famous (or infamous) classic Mustang then the 2008 Barret-Jackson collector car auction in Las Vegas is where you need to be. The auction is held in the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino from October 15th to October 18th, as in 'next week' :)

The auction is about a lot more than just about Mustangs but there are some 30+ Mustangs on the list and Mustangblog.com looked them all up. The event will apparently be broadcasted live on the Speed channel in case you can't be there (and in case you know what the Speed channel is... because I don't).

Mustang Wagon

Fact or fiction? There is a great article over at Hemming blogs talking about the Mustang Station Wagon, or at least something that could have been exactly that. Some time ago they posted a photo of a Mustang Station Wagon, along with a claim (not from them though) that Ford actually built two Mustang Station Wagons sometime in 1966. Now that doesn't sound too crazy, does it? When it comes to body variations of the Ford Mustang, you have the hardtop, convertible and fastback and indeed there's potentially some room for a 4th: the station wagon. Now I'm not necessarily saying that is a good idea, I'm just saying it makes sense purely looking at the facts ;)

There's 2 things I particularly like about this story. First since I had never heard about the Wagon until now I think that's kinda neat, but second and far more impressive to me (as a geek marketer) is how the posting the initial photo at Hemmings blog made the community interact and basically straighten the story out. So the rumour was Ford actually made two Mustang Station Wagons to test the concept and funny enough Hemmings blog had received photos of two different Mustang Station Wagons as well... could they be it?

"I think a lot of the rumors of factory prototype station wagons go back to late 1966, when Intermeccanica built the above Mustang station wagon for advertiser Barney Clark and designer Bob Cumberford and said wagon got exposure in the buff books of the day, including Car Life and on the October 1966 cover of Car and Driver. According to Intermeccanica’s website, the company actually built the wagon in 1965: "A Mustang Station Wagon prototype was built for the W. J. Thompson advertising agency. The car was presented as an idea car to Ford Motor Company." Jeff Pearce said the Intermeccanica car still exists, though it’s “rusting away somewhere back East.”

Apparently Ford themselves had indeed 2 internal design proposals on the table, but all three of them (their own two and that one of Intermeccanica) rejected, closing down the idea for good. Fascinating story if you ask me. Go and read on all the details at the Hemmings blog.
