In December 2006 I wrote about how Houston Chronicle's Nick Anderson was venturing into 3D animation.

Well, Nick has now discovered the more intuitive qualities of 2D and Flash, and is producing animated gag cartoons with the help of animator Todd Ramsay. A wise move indeed, because compared to the 3D work the Flash animations look great, and have a entirely different pace and energy. The use of interactivity in some of the cartoons works very well too - such as in the torture cartoon from April 29.

Enjoy the work here.

Today was probably the most emotionally confusing and stressful day of my life. But I'm not going to talk about it. No need to relive it.

I told my piano teacher that I don't think piano performance is the thing for me in college.... he understood and said we can keep going and see what happens, but I'm looking at 3D Animation and all that jazz again.

I found the coolest thing in the truck today. When it's in second gear and RPMs are low, if you punch it, the truck jumps to third and just FLIES forward. There were several ~ 30 Mph burnouts I did today. And I went around the turns so fast accelerating that the wheels were screaming for mercy <evil smile>.

I got my APUSH score today. I got a 2. I wanted a 3, but I guess I'll survive. Just amazed I didn't get a 0.

I'm watching Dirty Jobs. I'd absolutely hate to do what he's doing right now. Much too claustrophobic.

I washed the truck today. It needed it. Bad. It looks pretty nice :D but I'm gonna finish tomorrow, I gotta get rid of the waterspots (I had to run a few errands and it was too dark to see the spots when I got home), clean the tires, wax, vacuum, wash the windows, and clean the interior leather. Then do that all to the car.

I might buy the WALL-E videogame tomororw though. =D

Connaxis: Creative Outsourcing Argentina

Connaxis: Creative Outsourcing Argentina

8 July 2008, The Internet and the emergence of low-salary countries have resulted in the increased outsourcing of activities. Although this country is quite unknown for this matter yet, Argentina offers excellent outsourcing opportunities. Since 2002, important customer contact companies have established in Argentina, such as Regional Support Centers and Shared Service Centers. Exxon Mobile has moved its accounting activities to Buenos Aires; MCI turns Buenos Aires into a regional hub and also Google has announced establishment in Argentina. Now, what makes Argentina so attractive to these large international companies?

Connaxis has ten reasons for outsourcing activities in Argentina:

1. Proven location:

In the past years many multinationals have established in Argentina or outsourced their activities in this country, including: Teleperformance, Teletech, Apex America, Atento, EDS, Sitel, ActionLine, Arvato, Multivoice, Microsoft, Dell, Sony, MCI, Vodafone, AOL, Motorola, HP, Telefónica (Spain), Citibank, Repsol, Nextel.

2. Geographical location:

In Argentina it is 1 hour earlier than in New York and 4 hours earlier than in San Francisco. The time difference with Europe is 4-5 hours earlier. That’s why Argentina is suitable for 24/7 operating hours for providing support during the European evening. Different from Asia, when it is evening in Europe, it is day in Argentina. That’s why during the European evening support can be delivered at a common price.

3. Salary costs lower than in East-Europe and a little higher than in Asia

After the devaluation salary costs have decreased until below 25%, compared to Europe and the USA. Also costs like rent, electricity and telecommunication are low. Buenos Aires is one of the cheapest capitals in the world. Salary costs in Argentina are 60% lower than the average salary costs in East-Europe, whereas these are 15% higher than the average wages in Asia.

4. Argentineans have character

Argentineans are expressive, spontaneous, passionate and creative and tend to be a little philosophical. Argentines lay emphasis on the physical aspect and have much feeling for design. They are always learning, discussing, going out, and having dinner with family & friends. They are proud of their European descent.

5. Availability of qualified staff

Historically, Argentina has the best educational level of South- America. Argentineans are professional experts abroad. In Argentina there is great availability of highly skilled professionals. The IT sector is well developed. Since the crisis at the end of 2001, many highly skilled professionals find it difficult to find a job. Due to the salary differences between Argentina and Europe, there still exists a great possibility of arbitration in this field. Generally, Argentineans prefer to work for a foreign company.

6. Deep employment market

Argentina has a population of 39 million people, of which 15 million live in the three great urban centers, namely Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Rosario. 3.5 million people have had higher education or achieved a university degree. Buenos Aires and Cordoba jointly have 23 universities counting with 870.000 students, of which 170.000 study business administration and 50.000 informatics.

7. Availability of all the important European languages

Argentina has a large group of people speaking three languages. These people often have a European passport. Apart from Spanish, students generally speak English fluently. Contrary to India and China, a relative small number of employees speak other languages than Italian, French, German and Portuguese.

8. Interesting culture

The Tango is just an example of Argentina and its culture. Argentina is the place to be for cabaret, theatre, cinema and TV productions. Buenos Aires is known as the Paris of South-America. Visitors are unanimously enthusiastic about this cosmopolitan city with its architecture; night life and cultural activity.

9. Excellent IT infrastructure

In the nineties there has been a total liberalization of the Argentinean telecommunication market. The market offers an excellent IT infrastructure for attractive prices.

10. Interesting local growth market

In the past four years the Argentinean economy has shown an average yearly growth of 9%. Argentina offers an interesting internal market of 39 million consumers and is a trampoline to other countries in the region, such as Chile (15 million inhabitants) and Brazil (186 million inhabitants).

For a perfect combination between a highly educated population, European culture and low costs, Argentina is the right option. From here both the European and American market can be focused on. Argentina is the perfect fit for the outsourcing of the following business processes:

Service and Support;

Telesales;

Information Technology:

Creative work as design and marketing

In the next years, Connaxis expects a boom in outsourcing creative activities in Argentina. Better be there on time!

.

.

Fast Forward Rating: FFFF (4 out of 5)

.

.

The Animation Show is a medley of animated shorts gathered from around the world and compiled into a 100-minute extravaganza. The men responsible for stitching together this hot bundle of insanity are Mike Judge (creator of Beavis and Butt-Head and Office Space) and Don Hertzfeldt. For the fourth iteration, the curator duo hits many home runs with only a few strikes, and whether or not you are an animation connoisseur, the fast-paced programming is sure to engage all lengths of attention spans.

Introduced by a frantic hard-rock-themed title sequence, the creators lets the audience know from the start that they are in for a night of innocent, uncensored fun. One of the early standouts was “Burning Safari”, a 3D short directed by six students out of the French Gobelins L’Ecole De L’Image. It served as a great warm-up, focusing on style and character design/development over a complicated story.

[wp_caption id="attachment_89" align="alignright" width="128" caption="Schwartz, Hazen, Horlocker"][/wp_caption]

Next came “Mr. Schwartz, Mr. Hazen & Mr. Horlocker”, a Cannes Film Festival award winner from Stefan Müller that was arguably the star of the night. Melding 2D drawings with quasi-3D elements to make an extremely stylish feast for the eyes, its color palette was similar to Psyop’s famous “Coca-Cola Happiness Factory”, with an orange warmth consuming everything. On close-ups, pencil marks were visible on the edges of the characters, giving the animation that little bit of human imperfection that frees and refreshes us from the boring world of digital perfection.

[wp_caption id="attachment_90" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="The simple drawings of Angry Unpaid Hooker"][/wp_caption]

Voice acting plays an enormous role in giving animated characters life, as proven in Steve Dildarian’s “Angry Unpaid Hooker”. The character design was quaint and sparse, bringing to mind artists such as Quentin Blake. In the short, a guy’s girlfriend comes home after being gone all weekend only to be welcomed by a new house guest in the form of a yet-to-be-paid prostitute. The characters have skewed body proportions and hilariously rendered nostrils, all complementing the perfectly timed comedy of the voice acting.

The Animation Show also serves as a ripe teaching ground for many fundamental principles of animation. “John And Karen” demonstrates the power of scale in perception of space, as well as the indisputable superiority of 2D animation over 3D in the right instances. “Key Lime Pie” and “Forgetfulness” teach that perhaps animation’s greatest power is the ability to convey inner workings of human psyche, as there are no physical rules or boundaries such as gravity to limit the mind. “Western Spaghetti”—resembling Michel Gondry’s stop-motion animations from The Science Of Sleep—challenges the brain’s ability to perceive everyday objects in unconventional ways.

[wp_caption id="attachment_92" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="This Way Up"][/wp_caption]

“Hot Dog”, “This Way Up”, and “Usavich” provide more heart-wrenching hilarity. Some of the weaker offerings were “Blind Spot”, the “Professor Nieto Show”, and “Operator”. “Raymond”, created by renowned visual effects studio The Mill was stylistically superb, but being the animation most closely based on reality, it felt very limiting to be subjected to gravity once again. “Yompi The Crotch-Biting Sloup” made up the cannon ball tied to the foot of the show, dragging it down with obscenity and poor animation quality.

[wp_caption id="attachment_93" align="alignright" width="128" caption="Raymond from The Mill"][/wp_caption]

Overall, The Animation Show was fantastic, although I realize that animation is a very subjective art form. Some people favor more abstract animation (check out “Jeu”), others lean more toward concrete characters and motivated stories. As an animation student myself, I found the "film" to be very instructive as well as inspiring and entertaining. I highly recommend The Animation Show to all audiences, and I would encourage both animation and live-action filmmakers to view it as a tutorial in warping the bounds of physical reality.

ZBrush is an emerging 3D design tool that eases some of the technological burdens of artists and helps them focus more easily on creating art, but it’s still an application that needs some explanation. Some artists are intimidated by what they see when they look at the ZBrush interface.

Introducing ZBrush (Sybex; May 2008; $39.99) removes that fear and launches the reader head-on into fulfilling their artistic potential for sculpting realistic human, cartoon, and organic models in ZBrush.

ZBrush’s innovative technology and interface can be intimidating to both digital-art beginners as well as veterans who are used to a more conventional modeling environment. This book dispels myths about the difficulty of ZBrush with a thorough tour and exploration of the program’s interface. Engaging projects also allow the reader to become comfortable with digital sculpting in with a relaxed and fun book atmosphere. Introducing ZBrush assuages the apprehension and gets artists quickly involved in creating their own work, as they complete tutorials on painting, Meshes, organic sculpting, hard surface sculpting, textures, lighting, rendering, working with other 3D applications, and scripting.

ZBrush Character Creation: Advanced Digital Sculpting (Sybex; June 2008; $49.99) covers targeted core topics that give ZBrush users a good overview, along with dozens of hands-on, practical examples that show the breadth and depth of the program. The text focuses on using ZBrush to create exciting and detailed 3D characters and organic objects, with many accompanying full-color illustrations to drive home how to apply the foundations of traditional sculpting and painting to a 3D medium. This book is unique in presenting the steps necessary to sculpt and paint in ZBrush as well as the “why” behind the artistic decisions made at each step. Readers are exposed to the foundation artistic principles that guide their choices of tools and methods. It also shows them how to take their creations into other popular 3D applications such as Maya.

http://junk.chown.dk/junk.-.eta.h264.mov

He didn't explain what it was, who it was by, or reveal any details, but I won't do the same to all of you. It is a short animation done directed by Henrik B. Clausen, and produced by Junkworks Productions.

Watch and be blown away by the incredibly rendered detail. The opening shots of space are breathtaking, but the cluttered messy interior of the spacecraft is even more to be in awe of.

The entire film is only 4 minutes and 26 seconds long, but I can only imagine how much time and effort was required to make an end product so incredibly beautiful.

This makes me wish I were more into 3D animation.

We are changing the forum to make it easier for you to move up to Budding Director level, and then on to Power User. At the same time, we are launching a program of incentives and tools for those who reach these levels.

As you will have seen, we have introduced regular weekly webinars for those who are just starting out using Antics and they are proving really popular. Well now we are launching webinars just for Budding Directors to help you hone your skills, with the first one in three weeks. We’ll also be announcing some special offers for you very soon.

So how do you become a Budding Director and get an invite to these new webinars? Simply by meeting one of the following requirements:

Submit an original video made in Antics. Read this post to find out how to submit and publicise your work. The video does not have to be long, sophisticated or complex (it could be all of 10 seconds). It just has to show that you can manage the different stages of using Antics : creating or modifying a set, directing action, choosing the appropriate camera shots, producing a timeline and outputting it as a final video

Make 25 posts on the forum

Provide helpful advice on the forum to others which indicates your knowledge of Antics and/or animation

Antics will be the judge of submitted videos, to check that they contain a reasonable amount of original work, and of forum posts, to see that they contain valid and useful remarks; and hence Antics will decide on the award of Budding Director status. However if anyone challenges our decision, we will be happy to publish all the material for the community to decide.

We will publish more details of the Budding Director program in the next few days but in the meantime, get cracking on those videos to submit and watch out for more details.

3D modelling and rendering used to be hell of an expensive thing. 3D softwares used to cost thousands of dollars. Now, it is no longer that expensive. Noe you can even create realistic 3D renderings and movies for free.

In this article, let me introduce you to some of the free 3D software that you can download and use for free.

Anim8Or- This software has a really funny name. Nevertheless it is quite an interesting 3D animation and modeling program. The rendering can be quite impressive. You can download it from www.anim8or.com.

DAZ Studio is a free 3d posing and animation software. This is like a freeware version of the very popular Poser human posing program. You can download it from www.daz3d.com.

This one is for all you editors out there; you know how when you work on a spot for soooo long that when it finally ships it's "out of your life" and you're already working on something else and somehow you seem to miss it every time it airs? Well...Matt Egan (editor/director) just finished a spot for Target's Channel Red to promote their line of Hulk themed toys/action figures and it is airing NOW in Target stores across the country!

See?!! (photograph courtesy of Jeff Landsman)

It's fun to see work we do in a setting like this.

"The Red Channel Hulk spot was full of many challenges. Creating and compositing 3d animation with live action from the movie, designing a lower third animation that complimented movie footage as well as 2 different segments of product footage, building a set for the Gama Glow action figure, composing a bed of music and sound design to support the various imagery and bringing all this together into a slick 30 second commercial. Creating the table top set for the Hulk Gama Glow action figure was the first exciting challenge in the project. The set and the shots needed to maintain the look and feel of the film as well as capture the imagination of the demographic. To best showcase the detail and glow of the action figure I wanted to create a twilight scene of a city in distress. Blackened burnt out buildings, fog in the streets with a blueish green glow and the Hulk in the middle of it all. Using household items sparks the imagination of the children who will be playing with these toys to create their own sets." -Matt Egan

This spot was done tabletop in our studio and all the 3d animation was done in house as well. Gotta love those graphics guys! And quite honestly, I think the guys still play with those hulk hands upstairs when no one is watching.
