So, starting tomorrow I will be posting the Erik Gonzalez 100 in segments of 10, working our way up to the top over the next few weeks. I'll have commentary on each album, so it might take a few days between entries. Feel free to comment on any of my picks or comments.

I thought as a teaser, I'd list my numbers 110-101 as sort of a "just missed." It might give you an inkling of what is to come (and to show how hard it is to make the list and try to make it be something beyond a qualitative list ... heck, a lot of these albums might have easily made the top 100).

110. AC/DC: Back in Black

109. Beastie Boys: Check Your Head

108. Violent Femmes: Violent Femmes

107. Chemical Brothers: Exit Planet Dust

106. New Pornographers: Mass Romantic

105. Amon Tobin: Bricolage

104. The Streets: A Grand Don't Come for Free

103. Guns 'N Roses: Appetite for Destruction

102. The Roots: Things Fall Apart

101. Quasi: Featuring 'Birds'

The rest will be coming soon!

I’m sure by the very title of this piece that some of you are rolling your eyes at the concept of me providing you with guidelines about how to write sellable music. I will give you this: there is no one-to-ten detailed instructional manual outlining how to write the perfect song.

For that matter, I feel that songwriting is an art form requiring a great deal of skill that cannot be mastered by everyone. However, songs that have been able to cross generations, cultures, and time barriers do share some commonalities, which I don’t believe is mere coincidence.

The tunes that make an impact and continue to maintain their popularity 20 years later are memorable for more than just their catchy melodies. The songs to which I’m referring have been repeatedly listed in the Top 100 lists year after year. Though these songs are dissimilar in genre and methodology, what makes each and every one of them able to claim “greatness” is this: simply put, they are extremely well-written, and therefore have mass appeal.

For starters, the lyrical content of said songs tends to prey on social and/or political mentalities/issues that drive a solid point home with the listener. But, the message of each of these songs is presented in such a fashion that it is accessible to even the status quo. Nothing too complicated. Nothing too convoluted.

When John Lennon asked us to “Imagine” a world without violence, poverty, hunger, and religion, he painted a crystal clear picture. He blatantly probed listeners to question their existence, and rethink the structure of society. He ended on a hopeful note stating that he knows others like himself are out there, and he looks forward to the day in which everyone in the world, despite their differences, will learn to “live as one.” The purpose of his song is self-evident: to make listeners question that which is presented to them, rather than just accepting things as they are.

Another strategy of writing strong lyrics is delving into concepts that are relatable on a personal level. Everyone has had a point in their life in which they’ve felt like Mick Jagger: unable to get any “Satisfaction.” Though Jagger was referring to satisfaction in the sexual sense, a listener does not have to interpret the song in that manner because the lyrics remain open-ended enough to suggest otherwise.

Audiences appreciate the opportunity to take a song and apply it to their personal situation. As a consequence, most often songs that encompass complex metaphors don’t become hit singles, because audiences can’t get a grasp of what the songwriter is trying to say.

I’ve found that the best songs out there cover issues that are common and easy to understand. Hence, the reasons as to why we have so many popular cliché love songs. Everyone experiences love, romance, bad breakups, and broken hearts (hopefully not always in that order).

Next, comes the melody.

Writing a song that gets stuck in a listener’s head may seem like an easy task, however you want your melody to be unforgettable because it’s well structured, not because it’s extremely annoying.

I can count several instances in which I’ve had Britney Spears’(sorry to pick on her again, but it’s just so easy) songs stuck in my head on repeat, but it’s not as though it was an enjoyable experience. No one likes a broken record. Although Spears’ songwriters manage to write her material that is “catchy,” it’s not always catchy in a good way. There is a difference between good and bad catchy.

Good catchiness makes a listener want to sing along with the track after hearing only a few short moments, and without knowledge of the majority of the lyrics. Good catchiness also tends to stimulate movement; whether it be head bobbing, toe tapping, air guitaring, or drumming on the nearest object. These are the songs that you listen to loud and proud while cruising down the highway with all the windows open; songs such as ACDC’s “Back in Black” or Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” They are more than just an auditory experience.

And by melody, I’m not just referring to the vocal line. All of the instruments play a crucial part in writing a well-structured song. A great singer needs a strong band to back him/her, just as a talented musical act needs a charismatic vocalist to front them. Therefore, dynamics are of the utmost importance. A band needs to know when to go all out, and when to draw back depending upon what the lyrics suggest. Different dynamics constitute different emotional reactions. Thus, the instrumentation and the lyrics need to be in synch with each other in order to maximize the impact of your message.

Additionally, your songs need to be able to maintain the listener’s attention all the way through. Add solos, riffs, bridges, breakdowns, and highlight each of your instrumentalists’ individual talent. Keep switching it up so that the listener becomes entranced, dying to know what’s coming next. But, be careful not to go overboard with your verses, as above all, your chorus should be the section that sells the song.

When it comes to writing songs with mass appeal, writing a champion chorus is by far the greatest feat, and it definitely takes time to master. Eventually, songwriters are able to develop their own style, but not without years of practice and experimentation. Despite this, understanding the following general principle makes it easier to get a grip on chorus writing.

Using as few words as needed to get the main message across, and repetition of words and phrases will definitely assist in making your chorus a powerful tool. For that matter, some of the best choruses written in history revolve entirely around the repetition of a single phrase such as Alanis Morissette’s, “You Oughta Know.” It’s bold, in-your-face, and straight to the point.

Even if a listener only hears the chorus of this song, the main message Morissette is trying to make is still apparent. Nothing beyond those three simple words really needs to be said. With a single phrase, Morissette managed to write one of the most impactful songs of the 90s, especially for feminists, and one of the best “fuck-you” songs of all time.

The last rule of thumb that I will be discussing in regards to writing strong material doesn’t really come into play, until your group is ready to approach radio stations for airplay and/or record labels for roster consideration.

Few are aware of the fact that the first 30 seconds of a song is the determining factor in terms of whether or not a band gets radio play and/or a record deal. May I repeat, only the first 30 seconds of a given song! You’ll note that this is a very short period of time to grasp a listener’s attention. So, suffice it to say, you better make it good.

If you do manage to present something of interest within that time frame, both station managers and A&R reps will quickly flip through your other tracks to see if it was just a fluke, or if your band has genuine marketability. Therefore, your material must be consistently captivating.

When it comes to creating compositions that have the potential for mass appeal, keeping it simple in all respects predominantly seems to be the key to success. However, I will note that there are always exceptions to these general guidelines, and one can never be certain whether they’ve stumbled upon greatness or failure without testing their material amongst different audiences to gage opinion. By providing these songwriting principles I’m not trying to stifle your creativity, nor am I suggesting that the only songs that are any good are simple. Hell, I like my Deep Purple and The Doors every now and again. All I’m saying is that if you want your band to have commercial success, you'll need to buy into this formula to a certain extent.

Irrespective of this, the tendency these days is to release albums with only two to three strong singles. Therefore, if you’re a prog-rocker at heart, you may just be in luck. There’s definitely a market for what I like to refer to as “stoner rock,” but keep in mind, in order for songs of that nature to attain success, they usually need to break in through an underground movement first, which will obviously pose a greater challenge to your band. In addition, they will more than likely require a radio edit that will substantially cut down your 10-minute guitar solos. Though, I do wish you all the power in the world, if this is the route you choose to undertake.

Rather, if you are simply a musician who creates art for art sake, never let these guidelines constrict your passion. They are merely meant to be used as a tool for bands wishing to obtain commercial success, and with that comes financial remuneration. And…let me tell you, there’s nothing better than getting paid for something you really enjoy doing.

That’s the AC/DC tune stuck in my head today as I think about my positioning in each of my four leagues. I’m resting comfortably in second in the State League (TBS Home League), ninth in the SLO League, seventh in the Roto League, and in sixth in the Card League.

I've all but conceded defeat in SLO, and have actually gone into the seller's market, dealing CC Sabathia, Carlos Lee and Adam Dunn for a pair of first-round picks, a couple of roster slugs, and a pair of young players, Evan Longoria and Jay Bruce. I'm not a huge Sabathia fan, and neither Carlos Lee nor Adam Dunn were keepers for me, so it made sense to "get younger." The odd part about it is that I've also dropped some dead weight and picked up some nice players with value. I'm still competitive. More on that later.

But I want to spend the majority of this piece discussing the State League, and the dynamic of such lopsided standings. FreeSanJose currently has a stranglehold on first place leading me by 18 games, and third place by 24 games.

But this is all too familiar to me. In fact, during the prior two seasons, I was in FSJ's shoes. I've led the league by nearly 30s games at the ALL-Star Break and managed to enter the post season as the top seed only to have my championship dreams ripped away from me by TheJon two straight years. So while I am thrilled in my weekly victories, I am also humbled by the overall standings.

Had this been a roto league (where there are no playoffs), the lead would appear insurmountable and some players would stop playing, or be a complete tool and drop all of their players, destroying all credibility in the league. But this is precisely why head-to-head is a more enjoyable format. Just like real-life baseball, the league's champion is not always the best team or the guy with the best record at the end of the season -- even though I do think that is a major accomplishment. The champion is the last man standing, the way it should be.

Our playoff format pits the top six teams against each other with the first and second seeds getting first-round byes. And while those byes give the top seeds an advantage, anyone who makes the playoffs has a shot at victory. This is why the guy in third through six place cannot rest on their laurels and figure they've got no shot because they're more than 30 games behind the leader. And this is why everyone in the league should be active all the way through the end of the season.

In the right situation, a team in ninth of tenth place could come from nowhere, hurdle the bottom of the pack, grab the last playoff spot and then find itself marching through the hypothetical streets of title town.

This of course takes me back to the situation in SLO where I've seemingly all but given up. The key to dumping players when you're out of contention is to get players in return that will keep you somewhat competitive. While I do not expect to add a third championship banner this season to Casa de Pedriodico, I know that if my guys get hot, anything can happen. Just do the league a favor and don't start adding scrubs who are still in the minors or on the disabled list. Even if you've got no shot in the last week, see yourself as a possible spoiler -- go ruin someone's season.

(Read All Slipknot Articles) - I listened to my first Slipknot song today and could't help but wonder what the content of the words were behind the song. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks as I figured out why this band is as popular as they are. I've been promoting and telling the story behind these bands for months now and being that I've always wanted to know the truth about subject matters and get past all of the trash, I can see now why Slipknot is so popular.

Check these words out:

Pseudo-sacred
Pyscho virgin
Go tell your classes
Go dig you grave
Then fill
Your mouth with
All the money
You will save

Oh, there are cracks
In the road we lay
From when the devil fell
The secrets have gone mad
This is nothing new
But would we kill it all
Fate was all we had
Who needs another mess
We could start over
Just look me in the eyes
And say I'm wrong
Now there's only emptiness
But I'm missing something
I think we're done
I'm not the only one

Sid Wilson and Shawn Crahan during a 2005 concert Slipknot is known for often chaotic and energetic live shows.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="120" caption="null"][/caption]

The band's primary influences include Black Sabbath, Slayer, Judas Priest, Korn, AC/DC, Kiss and Beastie Boys. Death metal, and black metal, have been mentioned as a key influence on the band's musical direction alongside nu metal which the band is generally listed as. They have also stated that they are influenced by industrial bands like Head of David, Godflesh and Skinny Puppy as well as Neurosis and jungle music like Roni Size.

Slipknot has an extreme performance style provided by their large line-up featuring a typical heavily down-tuned guitar set-up (lead, rhythm, and bass guitars), two percussionists in addition to the primary drummer, and electronics (samplers and turntables). Robert Cherry of Rolling Stone compared the band's sound to "a threshing machine devouring a military drum corps."

Their early work hosted a large range of vocal styles, ranging from rapping to occasional singing to growled vocals. In more recent work, this vocal style remains present, but now includes more melodic singing. The lyrics generally follow a very aggressive tone and feature themes such as darkness, nihilism, anger, disaffection, love, misanthropy and psychosis. Rick Anderson of All Music Guide regards the group's lyrics as "not generally quotable on a family website". There has been controversy surrounding Slipknot's lyrics, including a case in which a pair of young killers blamed the lyrics from the song "Disasterpiece" for their vicious crime and a case in 2006 in which lyrics from the song "Surfacing" were found at the site of a grave robbing. However, the band has never faced any serious allegations that their lyrics may incite violent or criminal behavior.

Follow the reaper posted this question on the Slipknot official message board that I thought was interesting:

Which slipknot song can you best relate to?

Follow the reaper can perfectly relate to "Diluted" while Plague1 can relate to Wait and Bleed

How about you ... Which slipknot song can you best relate to?

I honestly couldn’t relate to any of their material, because I never took the time to listen to what they had to say. It does make for some interesting stuff to write about. At least you won’t find me falling asleep reading about that this band is all about. But then again, my life is exciting and I don’t understand why some feel they have to go to such an extreme. That would be one question I’d have for them plus a long list of others - but maybe going to the extreme is the only way most people will listen to a message that needs to be told.

When you post your comments I'd also like to know why you relate to a certain particular song.

In gaming news today and as the E3 is drawing to a close we can finally start to sit back and relax (a little).

Guitar Hero: World Tour to Feature 3 Jimi Hendrix Songs

Activision stroke back with a vengeance today when they announced that the new Guitar Hero would feature not one, not two but three! songs from Jimi Hendrix. And not the least known ones either: Purple Haze, Foxy Lady and Little Wings. During the Microsoft conference at E3 2008 Harmonix announced that they would finally feature AC/DC in Rock Band 2, but they are only featuring one single song, Let There Be Rock, which gives Guitar Hero a sudden edge. The music game battle rages on!

Knights of the Old Republic Online is finally confirmed!

Portfolio.com got the story today form the horse's mouth, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello, that EA is indeed working on the next KotOR project and that "yes"" it is an MMO. No release date or any other details have been announced yet but it seems the name might be "The Old Republic".

Alan Wake to Be Shown at TGS

A Vista promotional page hints at the fact that the game will finally be shown at this year's Tokyo Game Show. The game was strongly missing for E3 2008 and one can wonder about the validity of showing a PC game in Japan which is a very console oriented market.

As of June, according to numbers released by the NDP, the Wii has sold 10.9 million units whereas the 360 has sold 10.4 million, officially beating the Microsoft console for the first time in the U.S. It is worth noting that worldwide the Wii has been above the 360 for some time selling close to 25 million units as opposed to 19 million for the latter.

ok.ok. i'm a lil bit super cheesy~~

i confess -- i love all watching movies with any kind of dancing or singing. i loved Step Up and i loved loved Step Up 2. It was just released on dvd a few days ago and it was conveniently available at my neighborhood redbox, so i HAD to watch it again. The dancing in the moving amazes me and even though i can't dance -- it really makes me want to get into the groove. keke.

the movie might appeal to more people now since the success of ABCD because the JabbaWockeeZ and the West Coast Riders are featured in the movie.

i just ordered the dvd and the soundtrack sooo if anyone wants to borrow them... HOLLER~!

my favorite character in the movie was MOOSE played by adam sevani who was praised by The New York Times for portraying a character who "might be the baddest nerd in movie history."

i always root for the dork or nerd in the movie -- unless there's someone really hothot in the movie.

xoxo,

adam sevani and the director john chu seems to have formed some type of dance crew -- ACDC crew and challenged Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) and friend to an online dance battle. its pretty funny. lots of celebs featured - amanda bynes, chris brown, adam sandler, JabbaWockeeZ, and more.

enjoy!

Doing a search for AC/DC stuff on YouTube, I came across a couple of amazing anomalies.

The first is Shania Twain singing 'Shook Me All Night Long'. Now, I've got to admit that Shania Twain has always been an artist I've enjoyed with the sound down. But I thought I'd make an exception this time and have a listen. It is truly awful but worth a watch just for the bizarreness of it - and also the dobro player's awesomeness. I also saw there was a Celine Dion version but just didn't have the stomach to watch it.

And then on a similar theme. Here's Shakira doing 'Back in Black'. She does a pole dancing masterclass during the guitar solo. Nice.

Now I'm off to try and find an AC/DC version of 'Man, I Feel Like a Woman'.

You know I wrote a blog entry months ago asking if anyone knew where the hell the Bon Scott statue was in Fremantle after all the hooha. Well, I patiently waited for an announcement of its long awaited unveiling only to discover it has already been unveiled, at Cicerello's . Yes, that's right, but before you get too excited I must warn you it isn't outside but inside (I couldn't make this up). Hmm, I am sure Bon Scott would see the funny side of his memorial location. A "fish n chip" shop really doesn't seem to be that fitting for a rock icon. I am not sure whether I should laugh or cry. Does this mean instead of havng a beer with Bon I will have to have Barramundi ?

Yes, this is a snapshot of Yours Truly. (Age 13, I think.) I was aiming for the surly rock star look. How'd I do?

Check out the jeans tucked inside the granny boots. Apparently I thought this gave me an extra cool look. Hey, it was kinda cool in the early 80's... OK. Maybe not.

I'm showing you these pictures because there's something you should know about me.

Basically, I'm a nice person. I have good table manners. I'm polite. I don't park in handicapped spaces. I smile at strangers (well, most of them) and I give to charity.

But then... there's another side to me. The Rebel Side. It's the side that says, "Hey, Don't You Tell Me What To Do!" It's the side of me that makes waves, especially after I'm told don't make waves. My Rebel does not go down without a fight. Even as a child growing up around a violent stepfather, I had this Fighting Rebel. Sometimes it resulted in painful consequences for me... and sometimes it saved my life. Literally.

In writing the memoir, I've incorporated the Rebel. Like I said, my Rebel was always there, but she got increasingly strong during the onset of puberty. Doesn't that happen for most of us? That smirky, defiant, sassy teen arrives on the scene and changes everything. Writing my Rebel has been an incredible experience, because wrapped up in all that sass and defiance was a kid who was bound and determined to survive.

Do you have a Rebel inside?

We are all complex characters, with various aspects of self that emerge at different times. If you have a Rebel inside, do you remember when & why this character first appeared? Can you think of a time when your Rebel helped you in some way? Did yours show you how to stand up for yourself? Did you gain some independence through your Rebel?

Spend some time writing your Rebel and see what pops up for you. If you need to get in the mood try listening to your Rebel's favorite tunes. My Teen Rebel always liked AC/DC, Heart and Led Zeppelin. These were the most rebellious groups at the time. :-P

[googlevideo=http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docid=3473476894157139801&hl=en&fs=true\" type=\"application/x-shockwave-flash\"> ]

My first lady sent me an e-mail the other day that really shook me to my core. It didn't so much scare me as it made me scared for people who think like the people in this post. I currently know of someone right now who says that they know they are going to hell and they really don't care. They actually act like they are looking forward to it and they tempt God with their behavior. Well..... I hunted down what I think is the origin of the e-mail and here is the link Fluke News.

Very interesting, read until the end…..It is written in the Bible:

Galatians 6:7
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Here are some men and women who mocked God :

John Lennon (Singer):
Some years before, during his interview with an American Magazine, he said: “Christianity will end, it will disappear. I do not have to argue about that. I am certain. Jesus was ok, but his subjects were too simple, Today we are more famous than Him” (1966).

Lennon, after saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, was shot six times.

Tancredo Neves (President of Brazil):
During the Presidential campaign, he said if he got 500,000 votes from his party, not even God would remove him from Presidency.

Sure he got the votes, but he got sick a day before being made President, then he died.

Cazuza (Bi-sexual Brazilian composer, singer and poet):
During a show in Canecio (Rio de Janeiro), while smoking his cigarette, he puffed out some smoke into the air and said: “God, that’s for you.”

He died at the age of 32 of AIDS in a horrible manner.

The man who built the Titanic
After the construction of Titanic, a reporter asked him how safe the Titanic would be. With an ironic tone he said: “Not even God can sink it.”

The result: I think you all know what happened to the Titanic.

Marilyn Monroe (Actress)
She was visited by Billy Graham during a presentation of a show. He said the Spirit of God had sent him to preach to her. After hearing what the Preacher had to say, she said: “I don’t need your Jesus”.

A week later, she was found dead in her apartment.

Bon Scott (Singer... pictured with microphone and no shirt)
The ex-vocalist of the AC/DC. On one of his 1979 songs he sang: “Don’t stop me, I’m going down all the way, down the highway to hell”.

On the 19th of February 1980, Bon Scott was found dead, he had been choked by his own vomit.

O Coldplay liberou mais uma faixa inédita, “Death Will Never Conquer", pode ser baixada no site da banda, a razão desse “presente” é o início da turnê do novo albúm “Vida la vida or Death and All His Friends”.

[caption id="attachment_289" align="aligncenter" width="217" caption="Courtesy of t.klick via Flickr"][/caption]

For many of us, AC/DC evokes memories of homecoming dance soundtracks and warm summer nights in a teenager's Camaro. However, the bad schoolboys of rock have some valuable lessons to impart to copywriters as well.

1: "I'm just making my play. Don't try to push your luck, just get out of my way…I'm back, back in black"

"A degree in English means you’ll be a high school teacher the rest of your life." "I guess you don’t ever want to earn enough money to support your family."

These very statements were told to me as I was contemplating a writing career. And they are bold-faced lies.

If your guidance counselor or girl/boyfriend or parents are trying to dissuade you from the career in writing you want, it is your responsibility to prove them wrong. Make your play in the world and then go back and tell them all about it.

2: "She wanted no applause, just another course…the earth was quaking, my mind was aching…and you shook me all night long"

There are generally two types of writers portrayed on television. You either have the Ginsberg-esque beatnik or the Mad Men type of highball swilling hack.

Like so many other things, the real world is not like that. Being a copywriter is fun, but plan to be on the roller coaster.

Copywriting is not a 9 to 5 job. It takes a lot of effort. You might actually sweat. It is mental activity that takes a physical toll. And it is truly spectacular. But be prepared to work all night long if you have to.

3: "I shoot from the hip. I was born with a stiff, a stiff upper lip"

You don't want to go off half-cocked (groan), but as with any creative endeavor, you are going to face criticism of your work. Sometimes you will agree with the subjective assessment, and sometimes you won't.

The best copywriters absorb the critique, compartmentalize it into the professional (not personal) part of their brains, and use it next time if it has any value. (Hint: it usually does.)

However, do not let any evaluation to permanently scar your confidence. Besides a good brain, a stiff upper lip is the most useful part of a writer's anatomy.

4: "Come on, come on, listen to the money talk"

Creatives tend to fear selling out. That fear has its uses. You won't find me writing ads for Philip Morris or BP any time soon.

On the other hand, remember that employers will only pay you what they must, not necessarily what you deserve. There is nothing honorable in allowing your family to starve. Sometimes that entails changing companies to get the money (and respect) you deserve.

5: "One of these days see me driving round town, in my rock 'n' Rolls Royce with the sun roof down…Ain't no fun waiting round to be a millionaire"

There are professions where instant stardom seems bestowed in a flash. NBA basketball players. Hollywood actors. Good for them.

Copywriting is not one of those professions. Most often, it takes a long time to build your writing career. But don't let that get you down.

In the meantime, enjoy the perks that other folks don't have. Writers are more likely to work at home, which makes childcare a whole lot easier. If you have to go to an office, it's more likely in jeans than a suit. It's no Rolls Royce, but it's still damn good.

Bonus: "It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll"

Writing is a craft, not a destination. This continual process can be one of the most rewarding of your life, but must be approached with rigor. Just as lawyers say "I practice law," I recommended getting in the habit of saying "I practice writing."

Your path to the top may be difficult to see at times. There are all sorts of venues in business for your writing – direct mail, internal communication, advertising copy, etc. – so pursue what you love and excel at.

A career as a writer can seem daunting. While it is a challenge, it can also be the most fun you ever have. It can even be a little rock 'n' roll.

So, for those of you about to write, I salute you.

Si sper sa apuc si eu sa aud "Back in Black" live. Asta fara Angus sprijinit in baston pe scena, daca e posibil.

Strange, strange, strange...
