Yesterday I dropped off artwork for "Everyone We Know", a group portrait show at Harris Ave. Cafe in Bellingham, Wa. (Fairhaven actually). The opening is Saturday, July 26 from 7-8 PM. At 8 PM the Supper Club will begin (check here for more info). I will be attending the cocktail hour and will be sure to take some pictures. I contributed 5 prints from "Coveted" in simple black frames for sale at the Cafe for $75 each.

Speaking of "Coveted" I started a new drawing for the series this morning while at the barn waiting for Uzi to come to after his sedation. A few pony hairs stuck to it but I think it's a keeper.

I also received two silkscreens from the "Encouraging Words" series in the mail today, back from a print show in Seattle.

Happy Thursday.

From a single photo taken out a car window I was able to select two crops to make two paintings. The first painting, "San Joaquin Prairie", was so much fun to paint that I knew I had to paint the second one. And here it is! They turned out quite different from each other, as I meant them to.

Unlike my usual leisurely, thoughtful approach to painting, this time I really attacked it. I painted it in just a few days in a marathon session. I stayed up into the wee hours each night until I collapsed exhausted into bed, only to drag myself out again the next morning to pick up the paint brush again. I don't normally like to work like this, but I think it's a useful exercise once in a while. It reminds me of my absolute limits. Doing this reminds me exactly how far I can push myself.

The reason for the madness this time? My big show this weekend in Malibu. I really needed another big painting, having sold the first "San Joaquin Prairie" recently.

Okay, so, officially tired of rambling now. Gotta run errands tomorrow and maybe, maybe draw something for Illustration Friday, if there's time. Not gonna sweat it, though, 'cause there's plenty else to do.

Oh, but, I oughta explain the picture, at least a little. It's of my uncle and my great-grandmother...he used to take her to the Farmer's Market, I think every Wednesday. She was always super-convinced she was gonna get cheated, so she always made the farmers show her the apples or squash or whatever at the bottom of the bushel basket. Come to think of it, half the time she was right about being cheated. Also, she always carried around this black shiny purse, and wore Post Office shoes, and was the best great-grandmother in the whole entire Universe, except for the other ones I also knew growing up. Anyway, to be accurate, the picture would have to have squished tomatoes all over the ground, and nine billion pigeons, and a mysterious odor that's neither animal or vegetable in nature...the old Market was that kind of place. But, again, there was barely time this week to even do a picture, and I was on kind of a tight deadline.

So when I sat down to do this week's Illustration Friday with the topic "enough," I thought of her. In a few weeks she's jetting off to grad school in a new state, a new world, a new adventure and she can (and I really do hope this) leave behind the people and things that cause the most trouble in her life. So this is dedicated to her.

Today I'm showing you two pieces, one a few years old but never published until now, and a brand new painting. Let me tell you about the first piece; about two years ago I started a project where I was painting lots of very large acrylic paintings on unstretched canvas. Just now I am coming back to some of these (about 20 total, all of them larger than 30 x 40"); and finishing them, photographing them, etc., (and someday stretching them).

The second piece I'm going to share in this post is a much smaller piece, and it's brand new. It's called Blue #3 (it's third in a series of monochromatic blue watercolor paintings). The first two in the series are much larger, (22 x 28") this one is only 8.5 x 11", but I really like it. It will be matted and framed and available for sale sometime in the future. Feel free to tell me what you think about either piece.

I don't normally post incomplete work here but I'm away on a longish holiday (back in Sep) starting today. Posts here might be irregular. I'm really loving the little project I've set for myself over the summer, I'm working on Ideas around some of my favourite stories, I wonder if you can guess what they might be?

Here's a clue: they all involve little girls.......Pretty vague I know, but you will no doubt see other reoccurring clues in the work.

If you get an inkling over the next few weeks of what the stories might be, leave you're guess in the comments box, I'm thinking that this way I may discover some new stories that also fit into my theme!

I can't understand with all the local hype around this artist in her home area in Australia how someone hasn't picked her up, as in a gallery. With the popularity of Australian indigenous art in the U.S. and Europe as well as in Australia, how can a contemporary artist of her ability to capture native Australian animals in a way that fits into a modern living area go un-noticed by the galleries.

It is not possible by looking at her on-line gallery to appreciate the amount of dots in her works. There are 1000's upon 1000's. It's remarkable.

I found her by work online after a friend in Australia purchased a painting from her in person after seeing a photogrpah works. I advise anyone looking for contemporary indigenous art to view her website

I am a lover of most art and appreciate all art. I haven't seen Aboriginal art like this before. I have seen Desert Art from Central Australia on 2 previous 'outback adventures' which is contemporary- its a painting of Dreamtime stories in a bright array of tear shaped stroke making a beautiful pattern. I don't like the fact that you can not buy these paintings pre-stretched. I have always been wary of this, especially when paying upwards of U.S.$5000. I have found when trying to purchase a painting with an animal, nearly every instance the animal is in x-ray style, I like the history of the x-ray art of indigenous Australians but wouldn't want to be looking at it everyday.  The art that I have found that isn't x-ray art are very cookie-cutter style. When I buy art I look for unique pieces.

This artists stretched canvas has an unusual backing on it, its a thin piece of wood, the full size of the canvas to stop the canvas being torn from the back.  I think its quite a good idea.

The attached picture is an unsold painting of Elisa Robinson's. I think its rather glorious in colour and effect. I read About her on her website, I found it very interesting especially the pictures of what I assume are her family in generations gone by of The Stolen Generation. I also found it interesting that she is able to do other art styles such as watercolour portraits.

My sister and I have been together a full day now, and started with ripping, cutting, and re-sewing watercolor paper. This is what I started with the first day at Fran Skiles' workshop, and I was certain my sister would appreciate the possibilities of this technique. Her name is Barb Pearson, and she works in watercolor, acrylics, and collage. She took up photography as a painting aid, but soon exhibited such talents in this area that it has become a force in her life quite equal to the painting. She is also an avid gardener, and uses her prodigious sense of color and design to keep recreating her glowing and flowing garden.

Barb has textured part of her piece, and is now ready to paint and collage. I think it looks fabulous already!
