Admittedly, I wasn't sure about starting this since the hype surrounding the ultra-hip animated version had put me off a bit.  A coworker convinced me that it was more cool than over-the-top, so I decided to try it.  He was definitely right.  I was very worried about the mixing of technology into a past setting, and I was also worried about elements of humor seeming out-of-place.  All these worries were groundless, and this is actually a pretty stylish story.  There is absolutely zero humor to jar you out of the setting, and the use of technology seems limited mostly to cellphones, which actually don't seem that out of place.

The story and series itself is pretty simple.  The main character, the #2 assassin, is on a quest to find the #1 assassin for reasons of revenge.  Along the way, people try to kill him so they can be #2.  The main character is mostly mute, and a lot of the chapters consist of fluid, stylized battle sequences.  During every fight, color is used and the blood is rendered red against the black and white, which makes the art stand out even more.  It's pretty fantastic to look at, and about the only thing I can think of to say against the volume at all is that the fights can get a bit confusing sometimes.  I've seen much, much worse though (alas, my poor Trigun), and it's always pretty clear what's happening in the fights, so it wasn't too much a problem.

The plot is really not so deep or involved at this point, but I have to admit I kind of like the idea of ranked assassins, even if we only ever see two.  It's a shame more numbers didn't come into play, but maybe we'll get to meet more as the series goes on.  There was a numbered series of monks at one point who basically antagonized #2 throughout the volume and then fought him in the end, but they're taken care of by the end of the volume, and what appears to be a bearman takes their place.  The main character himself is stoic, nameless, and doesn't say much through the entire book.  He does a pretty good job playing the mute tough guy though, and I don't know that it would work if he was, say, talking trash or angsting or doing anything else.

The book itself is very nice.  In addition to the red color used throughout for the blood, there's also translation notes included in the back that not only supply you with cultural notes, but also give you the original Japanese for any slang that is used and the reason for the translation, and this is the only book I've ever seen that romanized and translated the entire Buddhist heart sutra.  I was pretty impressed by that.

I'm glad I started my journey into samurai manga with this series.  I think I'll get a little lost once I start in on Vagabond and Blade of the Immortal, so reading a pure and nice-looking action series like this is a good transition, I think.  Plus, like I said, I like the system of ranked assassins, so I'm definitely sticking around to see what happens with #1 in volume 2.

If you've never seen Afro Samurai before, I suggest you get with it. The anime with the baddest muthafucka to ever walk the Earth [Samuel L. Jackson, not the late great, Rick James FYI] is the shit. Look for that. Meanwhile, Season 2 is about to get started. What other mess can Afro get into?! Props to illRoots.

Then I saw that it was getting late and decided we might as well dart over to Pei Wei for takeout.  And THEN when we had 15 minutes to wait, I figured we might as well go next door to Blockbuster to grab a couple Friday night movies.

It was a disturbing turn of events.

First - have you heard about Blockbuster's new late policy?  I can't even find anything about it online, but apparently they've changed it AGAIN so that if you keep a movie for 15 days, you've bought it.  It used to be they'd charge you the cost of the movie, and then refund it back to your credit card when you returned it.  Now, apparently, the 'refund' part of the policy is out the window.  So for $60, Herbie and I are now the proud owners of Afro Samurai and Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles. 

I guess I should have felt sorry for the poor kid as he whined the new corporate (EVIL, THIEVING) policy at me, but Moo was trying to grab all the Milk Dud boxes, and I was trying to digest the fact that Afro Samurai would soon reside permanently in our movie collection, and I just wanted to rip off his zitty hippie-hair head and shove it up his ass.  I don't blame Herbie or his questionable taste in possibly porno animated samurai/warrior bug flicks - it could have just as easily been me renting The Cutting Edge 3.  But clearly Blockbuster is an evil empire and we, the rebels, must destroy them.  By joining Netflix, of course.  Herbie has been bugging me to re-join Netflix (we cut back last year in a budget slim-down), and I am ready to give Netflix a big warm wet sloppy kiss - maybe even an ass-grab as well.   And then shove Afro Samurai next to Buns of Steel on the Shelf of Shame.

But wait! Then, the second disturbing event occurred.  As Zit Boy scrambled around trying to find our newly-purchased copies of Afro Roughriders, or whatever, I decided to let Moo down to run around and screw up all their displays in revenge.  She gleefully ran up and down the aisles, stopping to rearrange categories as she saw fit (Nanny McPhee best belongs in horror, don't you agree?).  Then she slowed down by the new releases, running her hands along the movies.

"What are you doing, Moo?" I asked.

"Nooooothing." 

Then it happened.  She paused before a movie. 

"Mommy!"

Oh no.

She picked it up.  Studied it closely.

"Mommy, I like."

"No you don't.  You don't like that, Moo."

She gave me her new glare, then looked back at the movie, reconsidering.  And came to a decision.

"Mommy, I LIKE this!"

Oh God, no.

The horror.  The horror...

The mini series was sick and this looks quite promising... so in other words it's a must buy. I heard they were working on a continuation to the series as well.... can't wait.

This is a five episode story and most part of it is blood spilling everywhere. Most of the part of the blood spilling is the Afro samurai who get his ass kicked pretty hard, but being a good brutal skillful samurai means that you will find a way at the last minute.

Well, it has great design, great music, great fighting sequences and if you like manga you will love it.

La version anime de la serie se desarrolla en un "japon feudal futurista". En el acompañamos a "Afro" (un samurai llamado asi por su cabellera) en su camino para vengar la muerte de su padre a manos de "Justice", un asesino cuya unica meta es convertirse en el guerrero "Numero uno".

En el mundo de "Afro samurai" se dice que unicamente aquel que tenga la cinta de "numero dos" sera capaz de desafiar a el "numero uno" actual: si el desafiante logra matar al numero uno original podra tomar la cinta ceremonial y convertirse en el nuevo "numero uno". Se dice que aquel que tiene la cinta del No. 1 tiene poderes infinitos, iguales a los de cualquier dios.

Al comenzar la serie se nos presenta a  Afro ya convertido en un maestro de la espada y con la cinta de "numero dos" de camino a la "Montaña del destino" para desafiar a Justice: Durante su camino se reencontrara con parte de su pasado y enfrentara a una hermandad llamada "Los siete vacios" (The empty seven) que buscan obtener el poder del "numero uno". Al final de su travesia llega a la cima de la montaña donde tiene un duelo a muerte con justice para intentar convertirse de nuevo en el "numero uno".

Appleseed Ex Machina is an anime film that was directed and produced by John Woo (take note, John Woo!). It's a love story of Deunan and Briareros. Both are members of E.S.W.A.T, fighting for peace and order on a city that survived World War III. It's a futuristic city that used vast aritificial intelligence, and since half the human population of the city survived, they lived along with bioroids (genetically engineered humans) -- Briareros is one of them. John Woo once again proves himself as a master of action movies. The fighting scenes totally rocks and the characters were still very much like from the manga. But of course, with very fine details of colors and shadow effects -- somewhat like a mix of anime art and Pixar :-)

Afro Samurai is also an animated film based from manga, and casts were voiced by hollywood stars (Samuel L. Jackson as Afro, Ron Perlman, and Kelly Hu). The story only revolves on the "Number One" band. It was said that the one who possessed the band will rule out the world. Afro's father wore the Number One band but was challenged by a gunman called "Justice". Afro was then a child when he saw his father lost and brutally killed by Justice right before his eyes. Hence, vengeance was the only reason why he wanted to get the "Number One" band.

Last week, I've watched the live action film of Death Note, The Last Name. I never seen its anime or read its manga series, so I got so interested on its story while I was watching the film. It's a story about the reaper's notebook. Whoever owns it will have the power to command a reaper to kill whoever the owner wrote on the notebook. It's a kind of film where you have to think while watching, else you won't know what's going on.. It's kind of complicated but there's a very nice unexpected twist at the end of the film.

I am also hooked with School Rumble series. I first saw it on Channel 2 and found the main character, Harima Kenji, very funny. He wears long hair, has goatee and mustache, and always wears a sunglass that make him look like a delinquent student. He's very tough though, but always a shy guy when he's around with his crush, Tenma. He saved her few years ago from thugs, but then Tenma mistakenly accused him as a pervert. That's why Harima always wears sunglass for him not to be recognized by Tenma. It's now their 2nd year in high school, and Tenma no longer remembers the incident. Harima went back to school just to get closer to Tenma. He always have difficulties expressing his love to her. So his grand plan is to deliver his message through manga.

You'll also get to meet several characters that will make their love story more complicated. I've been wanting to know who will end up with, so it's somehow kind of addicitive. Too bad, it's only shown every weekends. But I got my daily dose of it by reading its manga (from www.onemanga.com -- a haven for manga addicts!).. So you think I go home with tired eyes because of work? Hihihi :-)

Seems that 18 year old Junior Records Founder JB Welch , who is also the co star of the new forthcoming reality TV series;The Industry TV was the enthusiastic game lover who gave fans a special treat this year at Comic-con.

"People have seen a lot of characters and this year I decided to go all the way out with this costume. I knew it was going to get attention, but i had no idea it was going to cause me to be photographed by thousands that weekend" said JB Welch, star of The Industry TV Show.

Hello everyone. I hope that you're all having a great weekend. It is time for this week's Blu-Cast. This week actually is full of titles. Huzzah! Now you'll just have to pick and choose which ones suit your taste. Let me tell you off the top, Heroes Seasons 1 and 2 are going to sell like hotcakes. I'm buying them and I have never seen the show. The Adventures of Robin Hood will make a great addition to your library because it is a classic. Please support the classics. Get Afro Samurai. I would suggest giving Miami Vice a try. I thought it was pretty good. Not great, but pretty good.

בעקבות שינויים ותהפוכות בחיי האישיים איבדתי קצת חשק ומוזה לכתוב. השילוב של עבודה קשה במקום חדש עם ניסיון לשמור על סדר חיים משפחתי תקין, לא קל. במזל גדול, הצלחתי להשחיל מדי פעם ללוח הזמנים שלי צפייה בפרק אנימה או שניים ותמיד חימם לי את הלב לראות שהכניסות לבלוג לא מפסיקות. אני מאמין ומקווה שהמקום יגדל להיות מקום ייחודי ומיוחד ובטוח שתמשיכו ללוות אותי בהמשך הדרך.

Dass Anakin Skywalker, Sohn des Shmi, Vater von Luke und Leia Organa, sowie zukünftiger dunkler Lord der Sith, in den Jahren der Klonkriege eine Zeitlang einen Padawan an seiner Seite hatte, ist in der Geschichtsschreibung der Galaxie bisher unerforscht geblieben. Zudem handelt es sich bei dem Jedi-Lehrling um die jugendliche Togruta Ashoka Tano vom Planeten Shili (Heimat des ebenfalls weiblichen Jedi-Masters Shaak Ti), entdeckt von Master Plo Koon (Ratsmitglied seit Ende der Schlachten von Qotile), und durch Master Yoda früher als üblich an Anakin weitergereicht, in der Hoffnung, dem ungestümen Jedi auf diese Weise ein größeres Maß an Verantwortung lehren zu können. Ashoka wird ihm während eines Gefechts auf Christophsis erstmals zugeteilt und beweist schnell, dass sie mit ihrem Mentor (der sie am liebsten „Snips“ nennt) trotz unterschiedlicher Temperamente ein gutes Team bilden kann. Gemeinsam befreien sie aus einem Kloster auf dem Planeten Teth Rotta, den Sohn des Kopfes gut organisierten Verbrechens auf Tatooine, Jabba Desilijic Tiure („the Hutt“), weisen ganze Armeen von Kampfdroiden in ihre Schranken, duellieren sich mit Count Dookus finsterer Gehilfin Asajj Ventress vom Planeten Rattatak und stehen auch sonst nicht selten mit gezückten Lichtschwertern Seite an Seite. Umso erstaunliche also, dass später nie mehr von der kleinen Kämpferin mit den beiden gestreiften togruta-typischen Kopftentakeln (auch Lekku genannt und bekanntermaßen ein Indiz für die Verwandtschaft mit dem Volk der Twi’Leki) gesprochen wird, doch auf die Gründe dafür wird die Jedi-Gemeinde vermutlich noch eine Weile warten müssen. Viel leichter hingegen lässt sich klären, ob auch nur nein einziges dieser Details denn wirklich notwendig ist, um das aktuelle Spin-Off aus dem Lucas-Universum zu verstehen, denn die Antwort ist ein klares und entschiedenes Nein. Will man allerdings eine Idee davon bekommen, warum die Skywalker Ranch als Quelle kosmischen und ökonomischen Reichtums auf dem Planeten Erde einfach nicht versiegen will, und die Lichtschwerter deshalb vermutlich ewig surren werden, ist ein Blick in die unendlichen Tiefen der Sternenkrieger-Obsession durchaus hilfreich.

In ihrer Architektur ist die Starwars-Galaxie ein selektives System sich selbst potenzierender Leerstellen. Wo man einsteigt, ist im Grunde gleichgültig, denn die Tatsache, dass man immer nur eine sehr begrenzte Menge (realer ebenso wie zukünftiger oder auch nur möglicher) narrativer Stränge fixieren kann, liegt in der Natur der Sache. Daran ändert sich auch dadurch nichts, dass es selbstverständlich die jeweilige Autorität hinter dem sichtbaren Ausschnitt ist, die den Blick des Beobachters wenn schon nicht vollständig lenkt, so aber doch zumindest (mal mehr, mal weniger strikt) vorstrukturiert. Denn das bloße Angebot an Einstiegsmöglichkeiten ist groß genug, um dem Konsumenten wenigstens die Illusion freier Entscheidung zu suggerieren.

Dass die betreffende Autorität dabei schon lange nur in sehr eingeschränktem Maß noch George Lucas heißt, gehört zu den Notwendigkeiten eines über alle Maßen umfangreichen Merchandising- und Lizenz-Systems, wie es sein Urheber einmal in Gang gesetzt hat und unermüdlich weiter befeuert. Was 1977 noch eine recht einfache Geschichte war, die in erster Linie visuell völlig aus dem Rahmen fiel und seinem Publikum Bilder bot, die es so zuvor noch nicht gesehen hatte, ist längst ein derart komplexes Erzählgeflecht geworden, dass echte Diehard-Fans schon ihr reguläres Leben an den Nagel hängen müssen, um auch nur im Ansatz so eine Art von Überblick behalten zu können. Während sich nämlich die sechs Episoden der ursprünglichen Serie in erster Linie auf das Schicksal zweier Generationen von Skywalker-Jedis konzentrieren (und dabei auch nur die Geschichte von Anakin wirklich einigermaßen von Anfang bis Ende durcherzählen), schaut so ziemlich alles, was sich um den Kern des Franchise-Universums sammelt, auf Randfiguren, Vor-, Nach- oder Nebengeschichten und erforscht mit zum Teil akribischer Genauigkeit die Vita von Charakteren, die in den Hauptfilmen entweder nur kurz (manchmal als bloße Statisten) oder gar ausschließlich in Erzählungen anderer Figuren auftauchen. Ob in einer unüberschaubaren Zahl von Romanen, Comics, Videospielen oder TV-Spin-Offs – das Universum dehnt sich unendlich aus, und mit jedem Beitrag eröffnet sich ein neuer Komplex aus Leerstellen, die gefüllt werden wollen.

Ein besonders ergiebiges Umfeld bilden dabei die sogenannten Clone Wars. Zum ersten Mal kurz erwähnt in Episode IV (also dem eigentlich ersten Film, seit Einführung der zweiten Trilogie bekanntlich mit dem Untertitel „A new Hope“ versehen), allerdings nicht wirklich Bestandteil der Handlung bis zu Episode II („Attack of the Clones“) und III („Revenge of the Sith“), spinnt sich einiges an Leerstellennetzen, die sich zur Auswertung anbieten. Zuvor bereits 2002 für ein Videospiel näher beleuchtet und von 2002 bis 2005 im Cartoon Network traditionell animiert, kümmert sich um die drei Jahre der Geschichte zwischen den Episoden II und III nun eine durch und durch computergenerierte Animationsserie, deren Pilotfolge Lucas mal schnell vorweg über die Kinoleinwände jagt. Glaubt man der selbst verbreiteten Legende, so kam dem Jedi-Master die Idee beim Anschauen einiger bereits fertig produzierter Folgen der Serie, und - das muss der Neid ihm lassen - ein besseres Marketing hätte der neue Ableger kaum kriegen können, denn irgendwie schickt Warner so (und zum ersten mal ohne Fox) doch tatsächlich noch einmal einen neuen Teil der Sternen-Saga ins Kino, egal ob animierter Trittbrettfahrer oder nicht. Das tut der Serie gut, dem Merchandising-Verkauf (mit den üblichen Anstürmen auf einschlägige Spielzeugladenketten) und der Kino- und DVD-Auswertung auch.

Ob der Film tatsächlich auf die große Leinwand gehört, bleibt dabei fast belanglos, denn es ist der Effekt, der zählt. Optisch kann „Star Wars: The Clone Wars“ weder mit vergleichbaren Produktionen aus dem Hause Pixar konkurrieren, noch scheint der Film dies überhaupt zu wollen, denn an erster Stelle steht ja nicht die Kino- sondern die TV-Auswertung, und auf diese hin ist der Look auch konzipiert. Unter dieser Voraussetzung allerdings erscheint die etwas gewöhnungsbedürftige Collagentechnik aus kantigen Figuren mit einem Hauch von Anime (dafür sorgt Lucasfilm Animation Singapore mit seinem Partner CGCG aus Taiwan) und kinotauglichen dreidimensionalen Hintergründen durchaus gut überlegt und für das Medium mithin ein Stück wegweisend. Zugleich ist die gemilderte Computerspieloptik ein deutliches Zeichen für eine frühzeitig geplante Gleichschaltung mit den zugehörigen Zweitauswertungen auf den einschlägigen Konsolen (wozu hier also zweimal Arbeit investieren?).

Die Geschichte selber ist, wie immer, recht einfach und lebt vor allem von spektakulären Kampf- und Actionsequenzen, aber durchaus auch vom Umgang der Figuren miteinander. Hier ist mit der Einführung von Anakins Jedi-Lehrling Ashoka ein ganz guter Griff gelungen, denn das Zusammenspiel der beiden Charaktere deutet genügend Potential an, um sowohl für den Film Sympathiepunkte zu sammeln als auch für das langfristig angelegte Serienprojekt tragfähig zu sein. Auf der dunklen Seite der Macht hingegen bietet die undurchsichtige Asajj Ventress - ein echter Geheimtipp für das nächste Spin-Off - vielversprechendes Potential für ein dringend notwendiges Maß an Beunruhigung (denn den meisten Hauptfiguren, Anakin und Obi-Wan Kenobi allen voran, droht ja keine ernsthafte Gefahr). Die kahlköpfige Frauengestalt (sieht aus wie Skin von Skunk Anansie) kennen die Insider bereits aus dem einen oder anderen Comic, sowie der Cartoon-Network-Serie. Ein bisschen Comic Relief bieten einzelne Kampfdroiden (Kennzeichen: dumm wie Brot), den Niedlichkeitsfaktor liefert Jabbas kleiner Sohn (im Grunde aber auch nur ein hässlicher Wurm), und für den Wiedererkennungswert sorgen die Originalstimmen hinter Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson in seiner zweiten Cartoon-Inkarnation nach „Afuro Zamurai / Afro Samurai“) und dem Cameo von C-3PO (Anthony Daniels). Absurdester Neuzugang: ein kaltblütig-tuntiger Hutt (Onkel von Jabba), der auf ausdrücklichen Wunsch von George Lucas zu klingen hat wie Truman Capote.

Bemerkenswert ist der Zuwachs femininer Körperlichkeit im Starwars-Universum. Hatte sich Carrie Fisher einst noch ihre Brüste so fest an den Körper zurren lassen müssen, dass sie nicht mehr sichtbar waren, so darf Anakins Schülerin in den „Clone Wars“ nun gerne bauchfrei auftreten (als Identifikationsfaktor für weibliche Teenager?), Asajj Ventress Ausschnitt zeigen, und Prinzessin Amidala muss sich gar bei jeder erdenklichen Gelegenheit so positionieren, dass der Bildausschnitt ihr kugelrundes und eng verpacktes Hinterteil bestens in Szene setzen kann. Man muss also die Hoffnung noch nicht aufgeben, dass Lucas irgendwann vielleicht doch noch die Adult-Area seiner Galaxie eröffnet und den ewigen Lichtschwert-Kalauern damit ein Ende setzt.

Hollywood is definitely out for my cash. Every week a new anime or comic book series is getting a live-action film. This week it's Afro Samurai, and it's got me particularly excited. Of course there's at least a 50/50 chance that they completely blow it, but I'm gonna be optimistic and expect big things.

The planned live-action film, which does not have a finalized script, was originally announced during Comic-Con International in California in 2006. A sequel to the anime series was revealed at this year's convention.
