Here's the new promo for America's Next Model, Cycle 11. Tyra Banks has clearly blown some kind of fuse in her big head. The Helter Skelter cycle?

Nikki Blonsky's father Carl will remain in jail until August 16 in Turks & Caicos. A judge ruled that he needs to wait for trial before he gets out of the pokey. He's up on an assault trial for beating the crap out of ANTM contestant Bianca Golden's mom during that airport lounge fracas. Elaine Golden is reportedly in a New York City hospital suffering from paralysis on one side. Yikes.

Fallen model Angie Everhart called 911 on her boyfriend on July 31 for beating her up. Police were called to Everhart's apartment because Angie was claiming an actor named Chad Stansbury had choked her. He was later booked for it. This is one of those incidents that will go on to be a scene in Lifetime's The Angie Everhart Story.

The only thing better than reading the scribbles of this young master, is hearing him read at one of his many appearances around NYC. If you have the privilege of meeting him, chances are you'll find sweet rebellion oozing from his pores. And if you're lucky, he might convince you to rebel a little yourself. The Molecule turns back the clock a year, revisiting our first interview with the man whose courtship with radicalism makes him the next big literati to look out for.

UM: How is it for a writer living in the Bronx?

SJM: When I moved to NYC from my desolate upstate hometown five years ago, my first apartment was in the Bronx--and I've lived here ever since. I think that living in the Bronx has been an incredible blessing to my writing. Since none of my friends live anywhere near me, and people think anything north of 125th Street might as well be in Montreal, I get to indulge my hermit nature and set aside an hour or two every night for writing/editing/corresponding. Just me and my computer and my boyfriend and "America's Next Top Model."

UM: And "America's Next Top Model?"

SJM: For me, "America's Next Top Model" ranks with "The Twilight Zone" and "The Simpsons" as the greatest products of American television. I have no problem going on the Tyra Banks Show and saying so. When Jaslene won at the end of last season, I wept like she was my daughter. Most reality shows--and most products of pop culture in general--pretend that race and gender and sexual identity do not exist. One of the many things I love about ANTM is the way it stresses how fashion is a space where queer people and people of color and women are dominant, and how instead of trying to ignore or overcome those elements of our identity we need to realize that they are the source of our power.

UM: You are a community organizer and activist. You're a vegetarian. How have these influenced your art, your voice? Is your “new mission to burn away all the hate in the world”?

SJM: Honestly, while I try to be active politically on a lot of the fucked-up shit that I believe is wrong with the world (the housing crisis/gentrification, HIV/AIDS, that dirty little war in Iraq, and so on, endlessly), having a political agenda is death to fiction. I try really hard to keep my fiction clear of moralizing/easy answers/messaging/etc. One thing that good fiction--good storytelling--can do is give us a safe space in which we can come to terms with aspects of human existence we might find horrific or unthinkable (say, the mind of a fundamentalist zealot, or concentration camp guard, or a soldier transformed by the draft into Vietnam cannon fodder, or the experience of a mom grieving the death of her son), which can be an important part of political consciousness... but when you set out to achieve that, you're probably not going to produce good shit. Many writers can, and my hat is off to them, but it's not what I'm trying to do. If anything, being an activist and organizer has exposed me to the insidious ways that political rhetoric and moralizing and cliches and assumptions can creep into everyday language, and challenged me to write outside of where I'm comfortable.

UM: Your work has been controversial at times. Your short story “Auschwitz Blowjob” comes to mind. Have you ever had a manuscript denied because it was "too controversial" or just plain misunderstood?

SJM: Yes. But when you give a story a title like "Auschwitz Blowjob" you have got to figure you're going to ruffle some feathers. That particular little number was accepted by the editor--and then nixed by the publisher--of an anthology that bills itself as today's "most provocative gay writing." There's obviously a deep satisfaction in being too provocative for that. And I've been told that other stories were rejected for the nature of the content, not the quality of the writing. And of course out of the billions of rejection letters I get every year, the vast majority are just form rejections, so, who knows why they turned me down. I don't write to be controversial, but for me one of the things that makes fiction writing excitement is when you let it take you to the places where you never ever ever want to go in real life. So I've had lots of stories end up being pretty edgy. The challenge is to do so in a way that produces an emotional response in the reader not because your story is full of shocking words and images and events, but because you've drawn your characters and their world so well that their experience resonates in a whisper, not a shout.

UM: And whisper you did, at the end of "Skin on Fire." The narrator, who during much of the story is ridden with anger (perhaps some hidden angst), seems to suddenly pause, reflect, and deflate on the train platform. Has he second thoughts? Does he have some sort of revelation? You've left the story open-ended. Will there be a continuation?

SJM: I like fiction that raises more questions than it answers, so, open-endedness in my own work tends to make me happy. Whether the narrator of "Skin on Fire" had second thoughts, a moment of clarity where he realizes the futility of violence and the need for universal love, a realization that he hated his gay-bashing target more than some cute dude on a train, a fear of getting caught, well, your guess is as good as mine. The fact that he did not burn up his lust-object-fellow-traveler does not mean he will not firebomb that dude's car! I think so many people (including many violent people) are horrified by violence... But we are and always have been completely surrounded by violence (I would argue that we live in a society that is fundamentally held together by violence), so I think it's interesting to explore that tiny secret pre-human spot in our brains where we see horrible things and our instinct is to demand violence. To me, that famous photograph of the napalmed Vietnamese girl to be such a horrifying and problematic icon, yet I confess a smug secret smile at the thought of Jerry Falwell burning in hell. What's that about?

UM: Falwell burning in hell? Now there’s a delicious thought. You seem to have mastered the short story. Do you have any plans for a novel?

SJM: Yeah, I just finished a novel called *Mother Land,* which I'm super-proud of, and am busily shopping it around to literary agents. UM: You're very tapped into the independent publishing scene here in New York. Any thoughts? What draws you to it?

SJM: I don't think I'm very tapped into anything. Like I said, I'm a hermit. I do love giving and organizing readings, though, and I've met tons of awesome talented writers in the process, and gotten great feedback from audiences. Networking and learning from inspiring folks (editors, publishers, writers, readers) is something I wish I could prioritize more, but I work really insane hours (at the rate I'm going I'll be able to support myself with my writing in roughly nine million years...), so, in the limited free time that I have, the priority is writing. If my shit isn't the best it can be, all the schmoozing in the world won't help me.

UM: Many artists, particularly writers, are gaining exposure through the blogosphere. How do you view the venue?

SJM: In general, I find the internet to be so exciting in terms of the new models for distribution that are evolving. A brilliant online publication like Velvet Mafia (www.velvetmafia.com) can reach a subscriber base of a hundred thousand people for practically as much money as it would cost to get it to one person, whereas if it was a print publication it would be considered big-time if it reaches a thousand copies. And then they'd have to spend tons of time doing ad sales. Literary websites and discussion forums are such a blessing for young writers who might have a hard time competing against the tens of thousands of other submissions that come in to the established print journals, and for edgy writers whose work pushes some buttons that some lit-mags might not be comfortable with, and so on. For a writer, unless you write with no intention of ever sharing it with anyone, the fundamental question is: will anyone read your work? And anything that makes it easier for people to read your work helps you out.

UM: It sounds like you've developed a special bond with your computer.

SJM: Hasn't everybody? It's the modern age. Computers have become extensions of our brains, a new sensory organ with which we perceive a whole new set of stimuli. Computers are where we go to socialize, do research, learn about exciting cultural products we'd never have heard about without the internet, steal things, give things away, masturbate, attempt to shatter the existential loneliness and isolation that comprise modernity. If you will forgive a flight of pretentiousness.

UM: Since blogs have taken center stage, we've seen commercial successes pop up seemingly overnight, including bloggers like Andrew Sullivan and (dare we say) Perez Hilton. I'm sure you have plenty of fans who look to digest your words on a weekly basis. Simply from exposure's standpoint, do you see yourself finding a home somewhere in the blogosphere anytime soon?

SJM: I don't want to create a blog. Again, it all comes down to time. I have so little writing time, and so many stories and novels bouncing around in my brain, that whenever I sit down at my computer all my energy goes into that. I read and love tons of blogs, so I'm not knocking blogs or bloggers, it's just not where my passion is.

UM: So, we're dying to ask--the girls in the photos?

SJM: My bff's Saffie and Tina.

UM: Is there any one motto or statement that defines Sam J. Miller?

SJM: By the time I die, hopefully sometime around 2700, thanks to life-prolonging science and/or a deal with the devil, epitaphs engraved in cumbersome stone tablets will have been replaced with little chips that can beam data onto phones/portable computers/whatever. So instead of a motto or statement, future cemetery wanderers will be able to scan my grave and download my complete oeuvre. Which I'm hoping will be enormous.

No, seriously, I have no idea. An epitaph is a man/woman's last ditch effort to persist into eternity, since most of us will not guarantee ourselves immortality by writing Macbeth or Their Eyes Were Watching God. It's tremendously exciting to think of the ways that cyberspace, by freeing knowledge and culture and memory from the confines of  (a) our brains, and (b) physical media subject to decay and obsolescence, like paper/parchment/photographic negatives/LPs, can allow our words and thoughts and "personalities" to be endlessly transmitted and preserved. Who knows, maybe a hundred years from now your great grandkids will be able to browse through your MySpace page and read all the catty and banal comments your friends left you after some crazy wild birthday party, and get a way better sense of who you were and what you were all about than just visiting some graveyard and looking at a stone with two dates and a witty one-liner or a stanza from Yeats:

Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a golden bough to sing

La compétition va être féroce.

Il reste Anya, la grande blonde qui parle bizarrement mais qui fait de superbes de belles photos. Fatima, la superbe africaine. Whitney, la voluptueuse blonde.

Sincèrement, je pense que ça va se jouer entre Fatimaet Anya. Car, jamais dans l’histoire de ANTP, une supersize model a gagné la compétition.

De plus, les juges sont très critiques envers Whitney et dans les derniers épisodes, elle n’avait plus le même pep qu’au début et elle semblait éperdument surprise de ne pas avoir été éliminée. Sa confiance semble avoir été ébranlée.

Non, je ne crois pas que Whitney va gagner.

Ça va se jouer entre Anya et Fatima

Anya est celle qui a gagné le plus souvent les défis, elle a été constante depuis le début, elle prend de très belles photos, elle n’a pas la tête enflée, elle est toujours professionnelle et prend très bien la critique.

De plus, les juges semblent l’appréciée beaucoup.

Fatima est une beauté, c’est un fait. Mais, elle n’est pas toujours constante et les juges ont failli de la renvoyer la semaine dernière car elle n’écoute pas la critique.

Ça risque de jouer contre elle.

Je pense qu’Anya va le remporter et que Fatima aura sûrement plusieurs contrats à venir dans l’industrie de la mode.

Bon enfin, Dominique a été éliminée!!!

Et oui, je ne l’aimais pas du tout, je ne voyais aucunement le potentiel d’un mannequin high class international en elle. J’avais déjà écrit qu’elle ressemblait à une drag queen et j’ai eu quelques commentaires de lecteurs offensés par mes propos.

Ok, tous les goûts sont dans la nature et il faut bien de tout pour faire un monde. Mais si vous avez regardé le dernier épisode de ANTP, qu’elle a été la réaction des juges en regardant sa photo? « TRANNY» Et oui, c’est le mot que Tyra Banks a utilisé. Et laissez-moi vous dire que ce n’est pas un compliment. Tranny pour dire transsexuel. De plus, les juges l’ont dit en pleine face de Dominique qu’elle avait l’air d’une tranny…Elle a éclaté de rire, elle ne semblait pas offensée par la critique, car elle devait sûrement penser la même chose en voyant sa photo.

À chaque fois qu’elle se présentait devant les juges, ils critiquaient son style vestimentaire et ils disaient ouvertement que si elle se présentait dans une agence qu’elle n’aurait pas beaucoup de chance de se faire booker.

Saviez-vous qu’elle avait 23 ans? J’en suis choquée. Je lui donnais presque la trentaine. Et oui, Mademoiselle Potin a un côté très bitch et elle s'assume.

Bon, en tout cas, bye bye Dominique, bon débarras!!

Nesses tempos de incerteza, a imprensa tem procurado aconselhamento de técnicos e professores que se revezam nas páginas de jornais e revistas. O que os especialistas falam pode legitimar ou mesmo desmoralizar os projetos articulados pela Prefeitura. Eric Ferreira – O jovem engenheiro é o diretor de Mobilidade do Instituto de Energia e Meio Ambiente. Eric apresenta idéias que podem desagradar gregos, troianos e sobretudo motoristas de automóvel. Mas não há quem duvide de sua originalidade.

Cândido Malta Filho – Professor universitário e fundador do Movimento Defenda São Paulo – em certo sentido, precursor do Nossa São Paulo. Malta Filho é histórico defensor do pedágio urbano e da criação de um sistema de microônibus para as classes médias, motivo pelo qual é tachado de “elitista”.

Aílton Brasiliense Pires – Definitivamente, um dos maiores especialistas brasileiros. Costuma ir direto ao ponto com um discurso composto por estatísticas e informações contundentes. Preside a Associação Nacional de Transportes Públicos, da qual também participa Rogério Belda, que escreve com regularidade para o jornal “O Estado de S. Paulo”.

Raquel Rolnik – É mais do que credenciada para falar não só sobre transportes, mas sobre todos os problemas urbanos. Produzia o boletim “Mais São Paulo” transmitido pela rádio CBN. Autora do clássico “O que é cidade?” pela editora Brasiliense, a futura professora da USP irá conferir a situação da moradia em diversos países em nome das Nações Unidas.

Adriano Murgel Branco – Ex-secretário estadual dos transportes, Murgel Branco se faz presente no debate em momentos decisivos. Ultimamente, preocupa-se com a relação o consumo energético no setor de transportes. É presença confirmada no debate sobre o trânsito de São Paulo promovido pelo Instituto de Engenharia em 15 de abril.

La fin du désastre télévisuel est peut-être enfin arrivée! La station musicale MusiquePlus a annoncé d’importants changements à venir. La nouvelle avait été annoncée hier par le journal Le Soleil et aujourd’hui, la vice-présidente principale à la programmation des Chaînes Télé Astral, pour MusiquePlus, Vrak TV, Canal Vie et Z Télé, Marie Collin a précisé la nature de la «transformation extrême» déjà attendue pour septembre prochain.

Notamment : fini la merdique émission des jumelles BO2 produit par la très siliconée Anne-Marie Losique et moins de télé-réalité. Ici, on met un bémol, car Mme Collin affirme que les jeunes aiment beaucoup ça. EUH ? Je me considère jeune (début vingtaine pour les curieux !) et je ne considère pas ça intéressant de voir l’émission America’s Next Top Model traduite sur les ondes de MusiquePlus. En plus quel est le lien entre cette émission et l’industrie musicale (surtout dans un contexte québécois) ?

J’adore l’émission ANTP, mais je ne veux pas la voir sur MP, ce n’est pas sa place. Je hais la télé-réalité de HULK et je ne veux pas la voir, et ce nulle part.

Les émissions poubelles sont aussi populaires sur les ondes de MP que les tempêtes de neiges au Québec. En plus, Mme Collin laisse entendre que MP est associée à torts à une station qui ne diffuse que de la télé-réalité ! Hello ?! Est-ce que tu as regardé MP dernièrement ? J’imagine que non : car il n’y a que ça des merdes télévisuelles.

Des émissions qui n’ont aucun lien avec le monde de la musique avec des titres qui se veulent « full cool» : Flambant n’œuf, TopROCK de Babu (je m’en fou de BABUUUUU !!!!!!), Mes Vieux tout neufs (mais qui a pensé à ce genre de titre aussi insignifiant ?), Mes 15 minutes, etc…

Connaissez-vous du monde qui écoute encore MP ? Votre chien ne compte pas. Votre pré-ado ne compte pas.

Moi, je ne connais plus personne qui l’écoute. Je fais partie de la génération qui a connu Véronique Cloutier, Geneviève Borne, Claude Rajotte et d’autres bien entendu.

Pour moi le déclin de MP avait commencé avec l’embauche du très mauvais Nabi… et l’inévitable départ de l’excellent expert musical Claude Rajotte.

Ce qui manque ? Plus de temps d’antennes aux VJ, plus de vidéo (et c’est pas vrai de dire que YOUTUBE prend la place des vidéos !!!) plus d’artistes invités, fini des émissions qui n’ont aucun lien avec le monde la musique, fini des télé-réalités insignifiantes, fini le copiage sur MuchMusic, fini des vj incompétents ( pour ne pas nommer l’incompétente Valérie Roberts, et je ne comprends pas qu’elle ait gagner le concours de VJ Recherché en 2007. Vraiment, c’est incompréhensible).

J’avais déjà entendu dire que le nouveau directeur de MP ne pouvait sentir Anne-Marie Losique (selons mes sources du milieu : elle serait super désagréable, elle abuserait de ses recherchistes, et elle est cheap, elle paie très mal ses employés).

Anne-Marie Losique louait des locaux de MP, mais bon, un beau jour, on lui a fait comprendre que son bail n’était pas renouvelable (voilà pourquoi elle est relocalisée au Vieux-Port de Montréal). J’avais eu vent de ce potin avant même que la nouvelle soit sortie dans les journaux !!! Et c’est pourquoi ils ont annulé presque toutes les émissions produites par la maison de production de Miss Silicone Losique jusqu’à la toute denière qui restait : celle des jumelles ! Ahhahahahhahah !

Potinons aussi sur Pierre Marchand, apparemment, il copiait tout ce que faisait MuchMusic, qu’il voulait toujours engager de très jeunes VJ ; il est fortement associé à la chute de MP…

J’ai déjà entendu dire (encore un bon potin) que Varda avait eu la job de VJ à cause… que hmm, mm !! Faites un et un (Pierre Marchand + Varda = JOB À MP !!!) ahhahahah

Mais ça, c’est une rumeur bien entendue... Mais lorsque j’ai regardé le screen test de Varda, je crois que cette rumeur est fondée !

No último post, desejei um Feliz Natal, mas deixei de desejar um Feliz Ano Novo. Desculpem, falha de memória e falta de esperança de minha parte. Poderia eu ter sido menos pessimista após ler, dias antes do reveillón, os resultados da nova pesquisa de imagem do transporte público na Regiao Metropolitana de São Paulo?

Dificilmente. Quem mora na metropole paulistana está cada vez mais incontente com o transporte público, destaca a última pesquisa da Associação Nacional de Transportes Públicos. Na opinião dos 2.300 entrevistados, o metrô continua sendo o melhor meio de transporte, mas pela primeira vez a porcentagem de satisfeitos com o serviço ficou abaixo da marca de 90%. O que provocou mais descontentamento? Anos seguidos de trens superlotados nos horários de pico, a expansão em ritmo de tartaruga em uma cidade do tamanho de um mamute ou a superexposição na mídia dos erros de engenharia que provocaram um grande acidente em janeiro de 2007?

A pesquisa não diz. Mas, seja o que for, o atual índice de satisfação com o metrô (85%) ainda é duas vezes maior do que o dos ônibus municipais (42%). Os investimentos na renovação da frota realizados durante a gestão do prefeito Gilberto Kassab não conseguiram conter a crescente insatisfação dos usuários com o serviço. A porcentagem de ótimo/bom dos ônibus cai ano após ano, como mostra a tabela acima. O que significa que já passou da hora de introduzir melhorias estruturais no sistema (racionalização das linhas, melhor nível de conforto, mais segurança na viagem, etc.) É angustiante ter de constatar que justamente o meio de transporte que atende a maioria da população é o pior avaliado.

Os trens da CPTM e o serviço de ônibus intermunicipal agradam apenas a metade dos entrevistados. Em 2005, os principais motivos de queixa de quem viajava sobre os 270 km dos trilhos metropolitanos eram: "passageiros mal educados/abusados (69%), trem sempre lotado (66%), trem sujo e mal conservado (63%)". Não é uma minoria que reclama das condições dos trens, mas um número bastante expressivo de seus usuários.

A pior avaliação do transporte público não sinaliza apenas que muito pode ser feito pelos meios coletivos. Em tempos de queda do desemprego e melhoria do nível de renda da populacao, esta má avaliação significa, mais cedo ou mais tarde, mais carros na rua. E, por conseqüência, mais congestionamentos, acidentes e poluição. De todo esse quadro, minha mágoa, minha aflição e, novamente, minhas desculpas.

Mas, para começar 2008 direito, vou pular sete ondinhas pensando em mobilidade urbana. O que desejo à nossa metrópole na virada do ano é o seguinte:

1. Levar a sério o planejamento em transportes: participação da sociedade, embasamento de propostas com estudos confiáveis, cumprimento à risca dos planos pelo poder público
2. Proteger a vida é o objetivo maior. Nas ruas, prioridade aos pedestres, aos ciclistas e aos usuários de transporte coletivo (nesta ordem, como manda o código de trânsito, aliás)
3. Calçada esburacada é uma agressão à cidadania (e, principalmente, a idosos e portadores de deficiências físicas). Criar um mecanismo eficiente para a rápida adequação das calçadas da cidade.
4. Melhorar o acesso à informação sobre mobilidade urbana, já que este é um dos mais graves problemas de São Paulo. Obrigar órgãos públicos, agências e empresas de transporte a publicar dados regularmente e prestar contas à população.
5. Menor tolerância com os veículos mais poluidores: questão de saúde pública
6. Linhas de ônibus mais racionais
7. Implantação de projetos de transporte urbano/interurbano como catalisadores do desenvolvimento local

A lista poderia continuar, mas só são sete ondinhas, né? Um feliz 2008 a todos nós!

Em tempo: a mesma ANTP programou para 14 de fevereiro o evento "São Paulo combatendo o congestionamento: pedágio urbano e outras medidas". Lamentavelmente, entrar no evento custa R$ 130, preço que faz da participação em um debate importante para nossa cidade praticamente um luxo. Estarão em pauta o nosso velho (e, ao mesmo tempo, pouco) conhecido rodízio de veículos, a viabilidade de introdução do pedágio urbano em São Paulo e experiências internacionais.

Além de todas as atribuições dos marronzinhos, os policiais também podem verificar documentos, revistar motoristas, fiscalizar as condições do veículo e até apreendê-lo, se for o caso. Muitos especialistas vêem na medida uma boa possibilidade de reduzir as irregularidades sobre quatro rodas, a poluição e os índices de acidentes.

Mas nem todo mundo está contente. O superintendente da Associação Nacional de Transportes Públicos, que já foi secretário de transportes em Campinas, é um deles. Ontem (26), na sede da ANTP em São Paulo, o arquiteto e urbanista Marcos Bicalho expôs suas razões.

Tive experiência como gestor municipal e a Polícia Militar sempre foi um grande problema. Porque a PM não tem como foco o trânsito, mas a segurança pública. O maior índice de erros, de absurdos, de equívocos bem ou mal intencionados vinham das operações da Polícia Militar. Sem contar que, muitas vezes, a motivação do policial militar para a atuação no trânsito era tão condenável quanto a indústria do radar: o policial ia para o trânsito para ganhar um pró-labore, ganhar um pouco mais.

A lógica de operação do trânsito não é militar, é civil. Agora, é um desperdício haver um exército de homens na rua, cujo papel é garantir a ordem pública, mas que não pode olhar. Mas um camburão de polícia andando na rua dá todos os maus exemplos que podemos imaginar. E nem sempre estão perseguindo um bandido ou um marciano; eles fazem isso porque vêem nos filmes americanos e querem fazer igual. É uma "descultura", um anti-exemplo.

Para comemorar a entrada da Polícia Militar no trânsito, ela precisaria ser requalificada -- no sentido da cidadania, não no sentido da ética. Para ser um agente de trânsito, o guarda precisa ser exemplar e não pode parar o carro em cima da calçada ou andar na contramão. O policial que faz tudo errado e depois vai parar um motorista está fazendo o quê?

Na realidade, não comemoro, mas acho que a Polícia Militar pode ser uma ferramenta de apoio importante. Se a PM atuar na fiscalização dos documentos dos veículos e da carteira de habilitação, estará ajudando muito mais para um trânsito melhor do que multando.
