Now, I'm pleased to report that I have been successful in installing ath5k drivers, something that failed before. The drivers are available from here. The best part of this is that the drivers are open source, so can be bundled by default.  Who knows, maybe someday we'll have wifi working out of the box on all Linux distributions.  By the way, packet injection does not work, but Backtrack has always worked fine for me. Try not to get caught.

Tive uma mudança de planos... estou com alguns posts engatilhados.. sobre EEEPC, Como deixar o Ubuntu com cara de MacOS.. entre outros.. mas lendo alguns de meus RSS resolvi falar sobre o Iphone. Hoje só se fala nesse bendito telefone... o que na minha opinião estão enchendo muito a bola dele. Eu particularmente compraria o N95 da Nokia... que eu acho realmente bem mais interessante que o próprio Iphone. Tela Touch? quem me conhece sabe que eu não gosto... não compraria um Tablet.. um celular talvez. mas não é um fator decisivo para minha pessoa. Abaixo segue duas comparações... uma com o G1 com Android(isso sim é tecnologia) e outra tabelinha bem interessante.. sobre os celulares tigolões na época da minha mãe.. com o Iphone... o MegaBlasterSuper telefone que falam tanto.

Desculpem-me não estar postando muito. A correria está grande, mas estou com muito artigos pré-montados que postarei nessa semana que entra.

Vamos começar o review com um vídeo bem interessante usando o EasyMode.

the past two weeks of my life has been about Netbooks... particularly about which one to get!  These buggers cost anywhere from 12K for the eyesight damaging 7" asus 4g eeepc, up to almost 30K for the uber cool looking HP Mininote.  They come in several sizes, processor flavors, os, hard drive/ssd configurations, and it's more than enough to drive anyone absolutely bananas.  

having done my net homework and actual hands on, here are my findings (in case anyone is interested)

For the best keyboard - HP Mininote. They keys are big enough to be really comfortable for long-use, and HP did not have to invent a sucky keyboard configuration to fit everything

Weight/Mass - hands down, the small 7" screen asus EEEPC (but it's horrible) so for something more humane, the EEEPC 900 for 9" and the MSI wind for 10"

Pure computing power - MSI wind wins by a whisker.  You get the Intel Atom N270 running at 1.6GHz with Hyperthreading, you get a generous 2 GB Ram.  this is even better than my 5 year old Compaq Presario laptop running a Centrino 1.6Ghz +512ram (and i still use often for nostagia's sake.)  Sure, the wind shares the same specs as the EEEPC 1000, but online reviews point out that the wind still wins in computing benchmark tests.

Storage - I'd give this to the asus eeepc.  you can install a "regular" 2.5" hard disk if you want to.  though the wind offers a mouth watering upgrade for this month.. your 80gb hard disk can be upgraded to 160gb this september.  But still, I prefer the user-upgradable configuration of the asus.

Value - Oh boy.  It only gets tougher and tougher.  Here are the specs that i'm looking at:

finally, the coolness factor.  now this is a toughie.  Asus has always been a Taiwanese brand for me as I still remember the days when these guys didn't sell assembled computers and they only offered parts.  MSI is a relative newbie player and still has to establish itself as a *reliable* hardware provider.  HP is a step above both brand-wise, but HP is still HP, and is devoid of any personality (hehehe)

You might want to ask why I find these netbooks interesting...  simple.  There were a bunch of people happily typing along with their netbooks during the recenly concluded SEMCON.  These guys only had to bring small bags with them to be productive, and I had to lug around this monster 15.4" dell laptop and it's equally massive bag (earning me a sore back after 2 days.)

Gadget envy. nothing more, nothing less.  

But i still want to choose well.  What do you guys think?

Apa sih Netbook?

Netbook itu NoteBook versi mini. Buat yang hobi browsing internet dan ngetik - ngetik kecil - kecilan, Netbook pas banget deh. Soalnya engga usah ribet - ribet kayak Notebook yang mahal and banyak aplikasi yang engga kepake.

I purchased this little ultra-portable laptop about 6 months ago and just love it.  It packs a 7" screen and a 4G compact flash hard drive with wifi, an SD slot, and 3 USB 2.0 ports into a case that weighs less than 2lbs with the 2.5 to 3-hour lithium ion battery installed.  The "eee" stands for "Easy to learn, Easy to work, Easy to play."

Here are a few more geek details about this laptop:

For me, this pc primarily been used in a "Easy to surf" role, but I've also used it to view divx and MP4 movies and tv shows. I used the pre-installed and very functional Linux software for the first 6 months before I decided to see how this little guy would run with Windows XP Pro.

While the documentation includes a great guide for reformating the small drive for a complete Windows XP installation, I decided to take another route.  I downloaded a copy of nlite, which strips the "unnecessary" drivers and bulky programs that I wouldn't be using on this system.  My final Windows XP Pro SP2 installation was approx 458mb.  For a great guide on how to accomplish this install, see this post in the eeeuser.com forums.  I ended up with a custom "lite" install of Win XP Pro that contains just what I need.  After downloading the standard MS security updates, Firefox 3.0, and a few other programs, my drive has about 2 gb of space available.  However, a great byproduct of this XP install is that my system boots in less than 20 seconds.  Amazing!

I installed MS Office 2007 on to a 4 Gig SD Card and it runs just fine.    For additional storage, I use several thumb drives or a WD 250gb Passport.

The keyboard is small and it will take a day or two for anyone to get used to the layout.  However, after a few hours of use, you should be able to touch-type without too much trouble.

The wifi on this system has a better range than my full-sized laptop.

For staying connected on the go this one is a keeper.

Many global corporations seem to like using different advertising in different regions. Acer has a good general marketing campaign that attempts to market the Aspire One as a wanted product. But someone decided to put this on the Australian site. And I thought that I might buy one(*sigh*). After getting through the cringeworthy presentation, what I thought was the intro, oh look it repeats. Great.

The focus on children is greatly misdirected. Originally Asus had a focus on children, childhood and learning with the EeePC. Crap version of Linux, crap hardware. Who would ever want to buy that? Unfortunately for them, all of the people that don't want to shell out 2000+ for an ultraportable. Apple must not be happy. It seems that nobody expected that consumers would flock to the devices, eager to mod and hack, getting rid of the childish OS on it and putting on something decent (like Hackintosh ). Or, just putting up with it and using it as a coffee shop toy (cynically, that's all the Mac book air is, too).

Coming round to the realisation that ordinary consumers don't want to be sold things marketed as children's toys, Asus has cleverly updated their UK site to better target the market. Hopefully other manufacturers will learn from the mistakes of Asus, and now Acer.

Edit: I think that I should also show good marketing from MSI.

Olá caros leitores de meu blog. Aqui está mais um tuto de como passar a ISO do Mandriva e SOs baseados nele pro pendrive e dar boot e instalar pelo drive usb, drive usb pq pode ser tambem um disco externo ou qualquer drive USB mesmo, ou um cartão de memória ou o dispositivo que você quiser ;)

Você vai precisar da ISO do último Mandriva, baixe aqui a ISO do 2008.1 e aqui a ISO do 2009.0 RC2. ( Baixe o One, KDE ou GNOME, de acordo com sua preferência, baixe o KDE Int ou GNOME Int, o Int é a versão que oferece suporte ao nosso idioma.)

1. Abra a ISO baixada e copie o conteúdo dela para seu drive USB formatado em FAT ou Ext3
2. Coloque MANDRIVAONE como nome de volume no drive USB
3. Baixe esse arquivo (Mandriva 2008.1) ou esse (Mandriva 2009.0 RC2) e extraia o conteudo pro drive USB, esse arquivo contém o syslinux.cfg e o initrd.usb. (Esse arquivo não foi feito por mim, leia no final do tutorial.)
4. Use o SysLinux pra transformar o drive USB em um dispositivo inicializavel. [No Windows "syslinux -mf X:"] [No Linux syslinux -f /dev/sdX] (Onde X corresponde a letra de seu dispositivo USB, tome cuidado!!

Pronto, agora seu Mandriva Linux está pronto pra rodar e ser instalado.

Você pode instalar o Mandriva em praticamente qualquer mídia com mais de 2,5GB, seja ela o SSD do EeePC, o HD de sua máquina, seu pendrive de 4GB ou o cartão SD de sua camera fotográfica. ;)

And yet we keep applauding each manufacturer that joins the fray and offers a nonexistant Linux computer. I don't think that the Linux netbook market really exists. Yes, there are low cost devices that are aimed at poor people, and education. But they aren't available for retail.  Then there are the 'consumer' Linux models. But they suck, pure and simple. They are usually small, low speced seven inch models, with tiny screens and keyboards. Reviewers always seem to point out the difficult to use touch pad (especially the cloudbook's), fairly short battery life, etc...

So, if you want a good netbook, you'll be wanting an 8.9-10 inch model. And you'll have to pay more, and that means that it's that much easier to slip in the cost of a MS license. Manufacturers use dodgy pricing and confusing configurations to mask the cost of the Windows operation system, and to make higher margins. And the Linux versions that everyone is raving about seem to dry up. And I'm getting sick of another hyped up product that I'll never see in a shop, or never consider buying.

… at least in my case, having a slooow Class 2 8GB SDHC. I re-installed XP on the internal 4GB from my external CD player, I followed all the tricks you can google out on speeding up XP boot (very useful playing with msconfig to remove useless startup programs and disabling useless services via services.msc – but leave prefetch data on your disk, XP goes faster with them ) and slimming XP down after installation (very useful moving some giant windows-update not-used directories from the windows folder to the SDHC – just to stay on the safe side; also CCleaner makes a wonderful job on the registry and .tmp like useless files – Glary utilities seems as good as CCleaner but I am scared it deletes soooo many registry keys). Now I have a light speed OS (30 seconds of XP boot!), still 1 GB free on the internal SDD and all except Firefox (speed it up easily – read here) and AVG is installed on the slower SDHC.

Finally, I can leave now on standby my eeepc for many hours (from 90% to 50% of battery energy after 10 hours left on stand-by), after optimizing the C3 state (even with SP3, read ALL the discussion) and disabling the camera with a small app (same link as the last one).
