For that matter, I feel that songwriting is an art form requiring a great deal of skill that cannot be mastered by everyone. However, songs that have been able to cross generations, cultures, and time barriers do share some commonalities, which I don’t believe is mere coincidence.

The tunes that make an impact and continue to maintain their popularity 20 years later are memorable for more than just their catchy melodies. The songs to which I’m referring have been repeatedly listed in the Top 100 lists year after year. Though these songs are dissimilar in genre and methodology, what makes each and every one of them able to claim “greatness” is this: simply put, they are extremely well-written, and therefore have mass appeal.

For starters, the lyrical content of said songs tends to prey on social and/or political mentalities/issues that drive a solid point home with the listener. But, the message of each of these songs is presented in such a fashion that it is accessible to even the status quo. Nothing too complicated. Nothing too convoluted.

When John Lennon asked us to “Imagine” a world without violence, poverty, hunger, and religion, he painted a crystal clear picture. He blatantly probed listeners to question their existence, and rethink the structure of society. He ended on a hopeful note stating that he knows others like himself are out there, and he looks forward to the day in which everyone in the world, despite their differences, will learn to “live as one.” The purpose of his song is self-evident: to make listeners question that which is presented to them, rather than just accepting things as they are.

Another strategy of writing strong lyrics is delving into concepts that are relatable on a personal level. Everyone has had a point in their life in which they’ve felt like Mick Jagger: unable to get any “Satisfaction.” Though Jagger was referring to satisfaction in the sexual sense, a listener does not have to interpret the song in that manner because the lyrics remain open-ended enough to suggest otherwise.

Audiences appreciate the opportunity to take a song and apply it to their personal situation. As a consequence, most often songs that encompass complex metaphors don’t become hit singles, because audiences can’t get a grasp of what the songwriter is trying to say.

I’ve found that the best songs out there cover issues that are common and easy to understand. Hence, the reasons as to why we have so many popular cliché love songs. Everyone experiences love, romance, bad breakups, and broken hearts (hopefully not always in that order).

Next, comes the melody.

Writing a song that gets stuck in a listener’s head may seem like an easy task, however you want your melody to be unforgettable because it’s well structured, not because it’s extremely annoying.

I can count several instances in which I’ve had Britney Spears’(sorry to pick on her again, but it’s just so easy) songs stuck in my head on repeat, but it’s not as though it was an enjoyable experience. No one likes a broken record. Although Spears’ songwriters manage to write her material that is “catchy,” it’s not always catchy in a good way. There is a difference between good and bad catchy.

Good catchiness makes a listener want to sing along with the track after hearing only a few short moments, and without knowledge of the majority of the lyrics. Good catchiness also tends to stimulate movement; whether it be head bobbing, toe tapping, air guitaring, or drumming on the nearest object. These are the songs that you listen to loud and proud while cruising down the highway with all the windows open; songs such as ACDC’s “Back in Black” or Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” They are more than just an auditory experience.

And by melody, I’m not just referring to the vocal line. All of the instruments play a crucial part in writing a well-structured song. A great singer needs a strong band to back him/her, just as a talented musical act needs a charismatic vocalist to front them. Therefore, dynamics are of the utmost importance. A band needs to know when to go all out, and when to draw back depending upon what the lyrics suggest. Different dynamics constitute different emotional reactions. Thus, the instrumentation and the lyrics need to be in synch with each other in order to maximize the impact of your message.

Additionally, your songs need to be able to maintain the listener’s attention all the way through. Add solos, riffs, bridges, breakdowns, and highlight each of your instrumentalists’ individual talent. Keep switching it up so that the listener becomes entranced, dying to know what’s coming next. But, be careful not to go overboard with your verses, as above all, your chorus should be the section that sells the song.

When it comes to writing songs with mass appeal, writing a champion chorus is by far the greatest feat, and it definitely takes time to master. Eventually, songwriters are able to develop their own style, but not without years of practice and experimentation. Despite this, understanding the following general principle makes it easier to get a grip on chorus writing.

Using as few words as needed to get the main message across, and repetition of words and phrases will definitely assist in making your chorus a powerful tool. For that matter, some of the best choruses written in history revolve entirely around the repetition of a single phrase such as Alanis Morissette’s, “You Oughta Know.” It’s bold, in-your-face, and straight to the point.

Even if a listener only hears the chorus of this song, the main message Morissette is trying to make is still apparent. Nothing beyond those three simple words really needs to be said. With a single phrase, Morissette managed to write one of the most impactful songs of the 90s, especially for feminists, and one of the best “fuck-you” songs of all time.

The last rule of thumb that I will be discussing in regards to writing strong material doesn’t really come into play, until your group is ready to approach radio stations for airplay and/or record labels for roster consideration.

Few are aware of the fact that the first 30 seconds of a song is the determining factor in terms of whether or not a band gets radio play and/or a record deal. May I repeat, only the first 30 seconds of a given song! You’ll note that this is a very short period of time to grasp a listener’s attention. So, suffice it to say, you better make it good.

If you do manage to present something of interest within that time frame, both station managers and A&R reps will quickly flip through your other tracks to see if it was just a fluke, or if your band has genuine marketability. Therefore, your material must be consistently captivating.

When it comes to creating compositions that have the potential for mass appeal, keeping it simple in all respects predominantly seems to be the key to success. However, I will note that there are always exceptions to these general guidelines, and one can never be certain whether they’ve stumbled upon greatness or failure without testing their material amongst different audiences to gage opinion. By providing these songwriting principles I’m not trying to stifle your creativity, nor am I suggesting that the only songs that are any good are simple. Hell, I like my Deep Purple and The Doors every now and again. All I’m saying is that if you want your band to have commercial success, you'll need to buy into this formula to a certain extent.

Irrespective of this, the tendency these days is to release albums with only two to three strong singles. Therefore, if you’re a prog-rocker at heart, you may just be in luck. There’s definitely a market for what I like to refer to as “stoner rock,” but keep in mind, in order for songs of that nature to attain success, they usually need to break in through an underground movement first, which will obviously pose a greater challenge to your band. In addition, they will more than likely require a radio edit that will substantially cut down your 10-minute guitar solos. Though, I do wish you all the power in the world, if this is the route you choose to undertake.

Rather, if you are simply a musician who creates art for art sake, never let these guidelines constrict your passion. They are merely meant to be used as a tool for bands wishing to obtain commercial success, and with that comes financial remuneration. And…let me tell you, there’s nothing better than getting paid for something you really enjoy doing.

La nueva serie de Spiderman, editada este mismo mes por Panini y que lleva por título Un Nuevo Día, ha causado revuelo entre todos los fans de Peter Parker. Y, sinceramente, no sé si para bien o para mal.

Pero antes de nada, un breve resumen. Esto sería más fácil si tuvieseis un enchufe en la base posterior de vuestro cráneo y el mundo estuviese dominado por ordenadores superinteligentes, pero lo intentaré de todos modos: Durante la guerra civil entre superhéroes y por consejo de Iron Man, Peter Parker decidió revelar públicamente que él era Spiderman y firmar como superhéroe registrado. Pero, en el transcurso de la Civil War, Peter cambia de bando, enfrentándose directamente a Iron Man y convirtiéndose en un fugitivo perseguido por Shield.

Tras la conmoción general, Kingpin, el Amo del Crimen y enemigo declarado del método Pilates, aprovecha la confusión para intentar asesinar al trepamuros. Sin embargo, su plan falla. Con tan mala suerte que la bala destinada a Spiderman acaba hiriendo a Tía May, dejándola en coma y con muy pocas posibilidades de salir con vida.  A partir de ahí empieza Back In Black, escrita también por Michael Strazin... Stranzin... Starczin... por el tipo que escribió Babylon 5 y en donde Parker recupera de nuevo su traje negro y busca al culpable de lo ocurrido mientras que los superhéroes registrados le siguen la pista.

La situación de Tía May no hace más que empeorar. Cuando todo parece perdido Mefisto aparece en escena y ofrece un pacto a Peter y a su esposa Mary Jane Parker: Salvar a la Tía May a cambio de... Erm, bueno, es un poco difícil de explicar, pero técnicamente es a cambio de alterar toda realidad conocida. Aunque los detalles más importantes son que Spiderman nunca reveló su verdadera identidad y que Tía May nunca fue disparada. Eso y que Harry Osborn está vivo de nuevo. La otra cara de la moneda es que Peter Parker y Mary Jane no llegaron a conocerse jamás.

Contado de esta manera puede que suene algo absurdo, pero toda esta historia está recogida en el tomo Un Día Más, editado el mes pasado por Panini, a un precio muy asequible y con entrevistas, bocetos y las portadas alternativas. Y dibujado por el mismísimo Joe Quesada.

Es el propio Quesada el que ha abierto la caja de Pandora. Las opiniones sobre Un Nuevo Día han sido muchas y variadas. La mayor parte de ellas negativas. Los fans critican directamente al editor por el nuevo rumbo del personaje, argumentando que el reseteo no responde a la continuidad narrativa. Aunque, de un tiempo a esta parte, la continuidad en Marvel brilla por su ausencia. Al mismo tiempo que se publica Un Nuevo Día se publica también Nuevos Vengadores, un grupo en el que figura Spiderman como personaje. Si ya era difícil antes, cuando el trepamuros tenía tres colecciones distintas, imaginaos ahora entre los Vengadores y toda la reestructuración llevada a cabo por Mefisto.

Lo más curioso es lo de las críticas negativas. A pesar de que se ha aporreado en todos los foros de cómics sobre el tema, las ventas de Un Nuevo Día en Estados Unidos pusieron a la araña en el número uno del top ventas. Al igual que ocurrió en España con Un Día Más. Pero, conforme avanzaba la serie regular, las ventas descendían. Aún así continúa consiguiendo buenos resultados.

Todo este reseteo me ha llevado a dos conclusiones. Bueno, la primera es más una duda que un conclusión. Es la duda que siempre ha habido sobre el futuro de un determinado personaje, es decir, ¿Debemos mantener a ese personaje siempre igual, manteniendo una serie de elementos comunes durante toda su carrera? O, por otro lado ¿Hay que hacerle avanzar de forma drástica, permitiendo la entrada de nuevos secundarios? Spiderman es el ejemplo más claro. Está claro que Spiderman es uno de los personajes más queridos de Marvel. Principalmente por su sencillez, porque nos es muy fácil identificarnos con un tipo que, en su vida normal, no puede pagar el alquiler, vive con su familia y le corren a collejas por pardillo allá donde va. ¿Es eso Spiderman? ¿O es el tipo que, de repente, se muda a la mansión de los Vengadores, como nuevo miembro, y posteriormente se convierte en fugitivo? ¿Es Un Día Más una evolución en el personaje o simplemente una manera fácil de volver a las raíces del personaje? Y si así fuere ¿Es positivo volver a sus raíces? Habrá que ver como sigue funcionando Un Nuevo Día aunque es muy posible que, si no funciona como es debido, presenciemos otro reseteo en la nueva Secret Invasión.

Mi segunda conclusión es que la Tía May es INDESTRUCTIBLE. Así, sin más. No hay nada que acabe con esta mujer. Ni el Doctor Octopus, ni el Duende Verde, ni Thor, ni nada. Es, como dirían Neil Gaiman y Terry Pratchett, inefable. Existe el oxígeno en la atmósfera, la gravedad, la Muerte y la Tía May. Es una constante del universo. Si la Tía May desaparece, el Ragnarok se desatará en la tierra. Mefisto lo sabía. Y Quesada también. No tendrían que haber enviado a Arnold Swchar...Schwtar... Schtwe... al tipo que hacía de Terminator al pasado, tendrían que haber enviado a Tía May. No se puede con ella, lo han intentado de cien maneras distintas. Pero siempre vuelve. Es May McCloud, del clan de los McCloud. Y es algo que me parece tremendamente injusto, no porque no me caiga bien la señora, no. Si no porque siempre que pasa algo así me acuerdo del Tío Ben y le veo, en el otro lado, todo emocionado, con lágrimas en los ojos esperando con impaciencia reunirse con su esposa. Pero siempre se queda con las ganas. Es como si le enseñasen un caramelo y luego le dijesen “Erm, hoy no, quizás mañana”.

Así que, al menos por ahora, parece que tendremos pasteles de manzana y tirones de mofletes para rato. O el mundo sufrirá las consecuencias.

Fisk actually means fish in swedish, so that's rather fun. But I don't think he smells as bad as me right now, he probably smells of some very fresh summer perfume or newly picked flowers..

Ac/Dc's Back in Black is a rather good song when you think about it, and if I'm not mistaken that very same album is the second most sold album in the entire world, EVER! And even after Bon Scott died! And Fisk from United Kingdom have made an awesome cover of Back in Black, I love the part where he samples Brian Johnson's YEAYEHEE, it sounds hilarious! Go show some Respect!

Back in grade school I used to be a metal head.

Not to say that I had long hair or lots of bitchin concert shirts...I didn't, but that's all I listened to.

Def Leppard, Poison, ZZ Top, Pantera and Motley Crue...you get the picture. 

Well all these memories came flooding back the other day when I discovered an old mixtape I made back then, appropriately titled "The Mofo Party Mix."  I actually dumped all my old cassettes like three years ago because they were taking up space and I never listened to them...so that fact that I somehow missed this one was kind of a surprise, and a pleasant one at that. 

Once again I could tear through the streets blasting 'Slaughterhouse' at full blast while pumping my fist and screaming.  I did notice that one band was represented more than the others on the tape...and that band was ACDC.

Back in 1980, ACDC was at a crossroads.  After spending several years touring and becoming one of the biggest rock bands in the world, their lead singer Bon Scott had died at the age of 33 after drinking too much and choking on his own vomit.  At least that has become the popular myth, the official cause of death was acute alcohol poisoning.  It was a sad way to go, but also an incredibly rock and roll way to go.  The group began discussing the idea of disbanding, but decided that Bon would have wanted the band to go on,

How do you go on without your frontman? 

True, Angus Young is as much a frontman as a lead guitarist can get, but how many bands have lost their lead, replaced him and had success at it?

Not many.

Luckily Angus remembered Bon telling him a story about one of the best singers he ever saw.  Brian Johnson of the band , Geordie.  Apparently, Bon caught the show where Brian was sceaming at the top of his lungs in the middle of a song, then dropped to the floor writhing and screaming. Then to top it off, some guys came out and wheeled him off stage. 

It turned out Brian had severe appendicitis that night, but that's not the point.  The point was that Bon had felt this guy had the right stuff.  He was brought in to audition, and a few days later he had the gig.

Primary recording began in the Bahamas at Compass Point Studios, as the band and their new singer worked to complete the album they has started with Bon. I was watching the VH-1 Behind the Music special on the album, and Brian talked about how hard it was to really get into the writing and to take over for such an established singer...but he apparently had some sort of vision of Bon Scott and after that was off and running.

Whether that is pure bullshit or not remains to be seen. 

But when completed, "Back In Black" would become the band's greatest album and one of the top selling albums worldwide. With hits like 'Hells Bells,' 'Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution' and 'You Shook Me All Night Long' the album comes as solid as it gets.  This is an angry album for when you're feeling good.  This is black coffee on your cornflakes.  This is what they were thinking of when they invented the electric guitar.

And the black cover?  Meant as a sign of mourning for Scott's death, it ended up becoming one of the most iconic album covers of all time. 

How people get along without this album baffles me.  

ACDC - Back in Black

I found that the movie was good and I liked it so apparently the makers of commercials have to be (or should be) well rounded in culture, because I had definitely noticed and remembered that commercial. It also had good music, ACDC's Back in Black. 

The thing I noticed about that dance sequence was that Audrey Hepburn's dance and clothing (black pants and white socks) reminded me a bit of Michael Jackson. What do you think?

Eu acho que isso rolou no começo de 1997. Numa época em que não existia gravador de CD e MP3 ainda estava engatinhando, o negócio ainda era trocar fita cassete pelo correio. E a gente nem se conhecia, eu nem sonhava com qualquer possibilidade de namoro e morávamos a quase 700 km de distância. Mandei uma fita com algumas músicas de puro grado, sem querer nada em troca. Já ele, não sei quais suas intenções, porque mandou logo duas.

Perguntei se ele tinha, ou sabia de alguém que tivesse, o CD Back In Black do AC/DC, já que eu tinha perdido minha fita. Ele disse que ia ver, mas em vez de gravar, o que fez? Comprou logo o CD. Dois. Um para ele e outro para mim. E chegou no ICQ contando: Eu comprei um CD para um amigo que faz aniversário.

Tá certo... meu aniversário só seria dali a cinco meses, mas foi a única desculpa que ele conseguiu arrumar. Eu ainda não conhecia sua capacidade enorme de dar presentes para pessoas que nem conhece. E quando contei para um amigo meu, para quem eu tinha recentemente saído do armário, ele apenas disse: esse garoto está querendo coisa.

Enfim, o CD chegou e curti demais. Depois eu continuo.

Atentas y atentos porque vamos con un imprescindible en esto del Rock 'n' Roll, 100 % historia de la música: Back in Black. Los autores de esta joya fueron unos australianos que pusieron patas arriba el mundo del rock con sus puestas en escena y su inconfundible sonido, AC/DC.

Publicado en 1980, el séptimo trabajo de estudio de la banda fue el primero con Brian Johnson como vocalista tras tomar el relevo de Bon Scott. Al respecto hay que señalar que Back in Black fue de alguna manera un tributo al malogrado cantante, según las palabras de su compañero Angus Young, el mítico guitarrista de los australianos, quien afirmó que el negro de la portada era una señal de luto hacia Scott. Pero ya sabéis que cuando decimos que un disco es "un imprescindible", no nos referimos a ninguna cifra, sino a su contenido:Hells Bells, Back in Black, You Shook Me All Night Long, Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, etc. Según mi humilde opininión, estos serían los pesos pesados del listado, con Back in Black y You Shook Me All Night Long siempre como destacadas. Y tratando de ser lo más objetivo posible, por muy complicado que resulte para un seguidor del grupo, en ese "etc" habría principalmente dos canciones más: Shoot to Thrill y Have a Drink on Me.

Esta actuación fue la última que grabó Bon Scott antes de morir en su propio vómito en Londres, el 19 febrero de 1980. Y da la casualidad de que la actuación fue en España, en Televisión Española, en un programa que se llamaba Aplauso. Cuando menos es curioso.

El playback es malísimo, pero disculpémoselo por ser unos de los más geniales cantantes de la historia del rock.

La muerte del bueno de Bon dolió mucho e hizo tambalear su continuidad como grupo. El palo fue terrible. AC/DC estaban entonces en lo más alto, tenían mucho que perder. A punto de abandonar, sin mucha confianza, los hermanos Young cumplieron la última voluntad de Bon: contratar como su sustituto a Brian Johnson.

Y entonces sonaron las campanas, regresaron de negro y zas!!!... Se conviertieron en más grandes todavía. "Back in Black" daba carpetazo a los locos años 70. Empezaban los 80, la consolidación, el mito, los macroconciertos, la era Brian Johnson. Sólo el podría cantar una década después la definitiva "Thunderstruck".

Com tot fan del cap de xarxa sabrà, encara queda un últim arc argumental guionitzat per J.M. Straczynski, però tot l'enrenou que ha aixecat One more day -que Panini publicarà el proper juny en un sol volum- i el ball de declaracions creuades entre el guionista i l'inefable editor en cap de Marvel, Joe Quesada, han aconseguit deslluir la marxa del guionista i fer que els amants del còmics considerem aquesta saga l'última de l'autor.

Certament la trajectòria d'Straczynski al timó de la capçalera ha tingut els seus alts i baixos, però no em sembla exagerat afirmar que la feina feta durant els sis anys que n'ha estat el màxim responsable el col·loquen entre un dels millors autors del personatge, a l'altura de grans mestres com Roger Stern o el propi Lee. Cert és que ens quedarà el mal regust de boca de pífies com Sins past o històries imposades per l'editorial en pos de la comercialitat de la franquícia -The other-, però tot bon aficionat recordarà durant anys la saga totèmica, el ja mític número de l'11-S, aquella petita meravella que fou The conversation i, per descomptat, la saga que avui ens ocupa: Back in black.

Tot i que, a priori, la tornada al vestit negre podia semblar un ganxo publicitari per aprofitar el filó de la tercera pel·lícula del personatge, Straczynski ho aprofita sàviament com un altre recurs per expressar els sentiments d'en Peter després de les conseqüències narrades durant la guerra civil (Civil War i Amazing Spiderman).

Després que la tia May rebés un tret que hauria hagut de ser per al nostre heroi, Peter Parker comença una busca punyent i desesperada per trobar-ne el culpable. Durant aquests cinc números Straczynski ens presenta un Peter fosc, mancat del seu típic humor i que es mostra molt més que resolutiu en totes les seves accions.

Pel que fa a l'apartat gràfic, Garney realitza un treball excel·lent, no només pel que fa al traç, sinó sobretot en tot el que fa referència a la narració, principalment en el primer i el tercer número -increïble l'atmosfera de la presó!-. Garney ha treballat amb solvència, i des del meu humil punt de vista no té res a envejar al molt sovint sobrevalorat John Romita Jr.

L'únic punt feble de la saga és la seva excessiva durada. Segurament hagués sortit una història encara més rodona si s'hagués condensat en quatre mesos.

Tot i així, Back in black ha resultat una de les millors sagues dels últims cinc anys de continuïtat aràcnida.

Mentre un blog che non leggo quasi mai è www.soundsblog.it, forse un contro senso?

Tra le altre cose che amo, ci sono le hit parade, le classifiche, vuoi perché ti danno un senso di ordine, vuoi perché ti fanno subito diventare curioso, o più sottilmente, perché ogni lista altro non è che una scelta e come ogni scelta scarta a priori delle cose, degli oggetti, delle idee.

L'ultima lista che mi è capitato di vedere, proprio in soundsblog, è quella dei migliori 25 riff di chitarra, qui il post originale.

Il riff di chitarra è la struttura base di un brano che spesso viene ad essere il marchio di fabbrica del brano stesso potremmo dire che sono il "ritornello che esegue il chitarrista", come naturalmente tutti sapevate.

Mi sono quindi messo a leggere, con la mia solita avidità, la lista e mi son detto: perché non fare un post?

25. Money For Nothing - Dire Straits (1984)

(Nota personale: il video è stato il primo a passare su MTV Europa. E forse è per questo che alcuni credono sia il primo video musicale della storia. I Dire Strais si formarono nel 1977. Componenti Mark Knopfler (chitarra, voce e autore di tutti i brani), David Knopfler (chitarra), John Illsley (basso) e Pick Withers (batteria). Come tutte le band, partenza in sordina, ma già nel 1980 arrivano al successo e toccano l'apice con "Brothers in Arms" che conteneva la canzone che avete sentito. Si sciolsero nel 1995.)

24. Eye Of The Tiger - Survivor (1982)

(Nota personale: canzone divenuta famosa per essere la colonna sonora del film Rocky IV. I Survivor sono una band americana formatasi nel 1977. Divennero famosi negli anni '80 grazie alle colonne sonore che composero. Tra di esse: "Eye of the tiger" (Rocky IV) e "The moment of Truth" (Karate kid - Per vincere domani). Sono ancora in attività anche se la band ha cambiato spesso componenti: 9 volte)

23. Voodoo Child - Jimi Hendrix (1967)

(Nota personale: Anche se non avete mai sentito nulla di Hendrix, lo conoscete. È un'icona della chitarra, e per un'icona non potevo che scegliere la sua esibizione a Woodstock. Hendrix nasce nel '42. Vita difficile: da piccolo affidato ad amici per problemi economici della famiglia che non passarono neanche quando il padre tornò dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Iniziò a suonare la chitarra avvicinandosi alla musica blues grazie ai dischi del padre. Il successo inizia con la registrazione del blues di Billy Roberts "Hey Joe", potete sentirlo qui, fatto in modo "cattivo" alla Hendrix. Il sound che Hendrix elaborerà negli anni sarà fatto da quelle distorsioni di chitarra elettrica che diventeranno il suo marchio di fabbrica. L'abuso di droghe e alcool lo portarono ad un declino progressivo. Morì nel 1970. Memorabilia: bruciò una chitarra, una Fender Stratocaster, alla fine di una esibizione)

22. Paranoid - Black Sabbath (1970)

(Nota personale: I Black Sabbath sono un gruppo heavy metal britannico, formatosi nel 1968. Formazione storica: Ozzy Osbourne (voce), Tony Iommi (chitarra), Geezer Butler (basso) e Bill Ward (batteria). Come gruppo hanno fatto la storia del genere heavy metal contribuendone alla definizione e crescita. Una delle caratteristiche derivanti da loro è il lato "demoniaco" delle canzoni, così come il gesto delle corna molto usato tra gli amanti del genere, anche se la paternità è oggetto di contendere tra più cantanti e gruppi. Nella loro lunga storia, dal 1968 sino al 2000, hanno attraversato mode e stili arrivando a vendere qualcosa come 100 milioni di dischi. Memorabilia: sembra che durante un concerto Ozzy Osbourne abbia staccato con un morso la testa ad un pipistrello che qualcuno tirò sul palco: lo credeva un giocattolo di plastica)

21. Give It Away - Red Hot Chili Peppers (1991)

(Nota personale: Gruppo statunitense nato nel 1983, hanno al loro attivo 16 album e hanno venduto più di 60 milioni di dischi. Il disco che li rese famosi è il quinto Blood Sugar Sex Magik che oltre a "Give it Away" conteneva anche "Under the Bridge". L'album di maggior successo è "Californication", 15 milioni di copie vendute grazie a pezzi come "Californication" e "Scar Tissue", qui. Memorabilia: Frusciante fa parte di questo gruppo.)

20. Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf (1968 )

(Nota personale: Fondato nel 1967 a Toronto, il gruppo divenne famoso proprio grazie a "Born To Be Wild", che faceva parte della colonna sonora del film-mito "Easy Rider". Il gruppo si sciolse nel 1971 per riunirsi nel 1974 e si sciolse nuovamente nel '76. Poco dopo vennero a crearsi due gruppi, gli "Steppenwolf" senza il vocalist e fondatore John Kay, che a sua volta creò un'altra band "John Kay and Steppenwolf" che si è sciolta nel 2007)

19. 7 Nation Army - The White Stripes (2003)

(Nota personale: grazie ai mondiali il pezzo è divenuto stra famoso; loro un po' meno. The White Stripes sono un gruppo statunitense di Detrit, formatosi nel 1997, costituito da Jack White ed ex moglie Meg White. Al loro attivo hanno 6 album. "Elephant", quarto album della band, che contiene "Seven Nation Army" è considerato il lavoro più rappresentativo e quello che ha venduto il maggior numero di copie. Il loro sesto, uscito nel 2007, album si intitola Icky Thump.)

18. My Generation - The Who (1965)

(Nota personale: Gruppo rock londinese formatosi nel 1964. La fama inizio con "My Generation" e continuò per gli anni seguenti. Punto fondamentale della loro storia è la pubblicazione dell'album "Tommy" (1969): in cui le canzoni non erano semplicemente accostate una dopo l'altra ma formavano un continuo, era la prima opera rock di successo, storicamente preceduto da altri due lavori uno dei Pretty Things e uno dei Kinks. Da molti sono considerati una band da vedere assolutamente dal vivo e il loro sound ha influenzato o permesso la formazione di band quali i Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, Blur, Oasis e altri. Memorabilia: erano usi distruggere gli strumenti a fine esibizione. Nel video scelto, se state attenti, ad un certo punto c'è una batteria che esplode!)

17. Highway to Hell - AC/DC (1979)

(Nota personale: Gli AC/DC sono un gruppo australiano nato nel 1973. Il loro stile punta molto sulla chitarra distorta e una voce stridente e aggressiva. Visivamente hanno una buona dose di ironia: visto il chitarrista-scolaretto? L'album che ci consegna un gruppo maturo con le sonorità che possiamo sentire ancora oggi è "Let There Be Rock" del 1977. Due anni dopo, 1979, esce l'album "Highway to Hell" che li conferma star mondiali. La canzone "Highway to hell" è compresa nella lista delle 500 canzoni che hanno formato il Rock'n'roll. La loro storia si può dividere in 2 momenti quando cantava Bon Scott (che avete visto nel video) e quella attuale con Brian Johnson. Brian prese la parte di Scott dopo la morte di quest'ultimo. Il suo primo lavoro con gli AC/DC è l'album "Back in Black": secondo come numero di copie vendute solo a Thriller di Micheal Jackson. Come tutti i gruppi longevi, la loro musica ha attraversato più di un stile anche se generalmente vengono etichettati come hard rock e precursori dello heavy metal.)

16. Wake Up - Rage Against The Machine (1992)

(Nota personale: gruppo rapcore statumotemse formatosi nel 1991 e scioltosi nel 2000. Si riformarono nel 2007. Le loro canzoni esprimono un impegno politico di sinistra e battaglie a favore delle minoranze. Lo dimostrano fin dai primi successi, o eccessi? Nel primo album che porta lo stesso nome della band era presente "Killing in the Name", qui, che ebbe notevole successo: una strofa della canzone era la frase "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me" ("Vaffanculo, non farò mai quello che mi chiedi"), ripetuta 16 volte. O ancora la loro esibizione di protesta contro il comitato USA per la censura delle canzoni: per 15 minuti si presentarono nudi sul palco e con la bocca tappata. O il concerto davanti alla borsa di Wall Street che fece chiudere il mercato per il troppo disagio creato! Al loro attivo ci sono solo 4 album: "Rage Against the Machine" nel 1992, "Evil Empire" nel 1996, "The Battle of Los Angeles" nel 1999 e "Renegades" nel 2000, quest'ultimo formato da sole cover.)

15. Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin (1970)

(Nota personale: gruppo britannico nato nel 1968. Sono considerati la più importante formazione hard rock di tutti i tempi e la più importante per la storia del rock. Formazione: Jimmy Page (chitarra), Robert Plant (voce e armonica), John Paul Jones (basso e tastiere) e John Bonham (batteria). L'album più importante nella storia della band è il quarto. Non ha titolo e nella copertina sono riportati quattro simboli, uno per ogni componente della band. Da alcuni viene chiamato "Runes Album" ("Album delle rune") o ZoSo (dal simbolo scelto da Page. Secondo alcuni i simboli della copertina sono legati alla magia nera e al satanismo. Nello stesso album è contenuta la celebre Stairway to Heaven, qui tratta dal film documentario "The song remains the same", che contiene un backmasking satanico, idea rafforzata dai contatti di Page con Aleister Crowley. Famosi per il loro eccessi, distruzioni di camere d'albergo e consumo di droga si sono sciolti nel 1980 dopo la morte del batterista.)

13. Johnny Be Good - Chuck Berry (1958 )

(Nota personale: Charles Edward Anderson Berry , meglio conosciuto come Chuck Berry soprannominato anche "il primo ministro del rock and roll", classe 1926, è cantante, chitarrista e compositore americano. Viene considerato da molti l'inventore del rock. Dopo alcuni anni di riformatorio per una rapina, iniziò a dedicarsi alla musica e nel 1955 la canzone "Maybellene" vende oltre un milione di copie. Negli anni '50 pubblica canzoni come "Johnny Be Good", colonna sonora dell'omonimo film in cui appariva anche Berry, "Sweet Little Sixteen", qui, che arrivano nelle prime posizioni delle classifiche americane. Gli anni '60-'70 non furono molto fortunati. Cause: alcuni problemi con la legge, negli anni '60 per quello che potremmo definire sfruttamento e negli anni '70 per evasione fiscale e il cambio della casa produttrice. Nel 1979 sì esibì alla Casa Bianca su richiesta del presidente Jimmy Carter. Per tutti gli anni '80 si dedicò a concerti dal vivo facendo da 70 a 100 serate l'hanno; caratteristica: girava da solo e la band di accompagnamento la trovava sul posto. Attualmente si esibisce un Mercoledì al mese in un ristorante il Blueberry Hill di St. Louis. Memorabilia: il brano "Johnny Be Good" è in viaggio sulla Voyager I, la sua canzone "You Never Can Tell", qui, fa parte del film Pulp Fiction.)

12. Walk - Pantera (1992)

(Nota personale: gruppo statunitense originario del Texas fu fondato dai fratelli Dimebag Darrell (chitarra) e Vinnie Paul Abbott (batteria). I primi 4 dischi furono "autoprodotti" utilizzando la casa discografica fondata con l'aiuto del padre l'etichetta Metal Magic Records, e ottennero un buon successo, l'ultimo Power Metal, presentava un nuovo cantante Philip Anselmo. Ma è il quinto album Cowboys from Hell, che segna un definitivo salto di qualità, dovuto in parte anche al cambiamento di etichetta, e l'arrivo del successo mondiale che li porterà a suonare anche con AC/DC e Metallica. L'album successivo, Vulgar Display Of Power, che presentava un sound ancora più estremo, vendette un numero esorbitante di copie e conteneva la canzone simbolo del gruppo, quella che avete appena ascoltato, "Walk". Negli anni successivi iniziarono dei problemi nella band: il cantante, oltre che dedicare sempre più tempo a progetti in proprio, si drogava e rischiò di morire per overdose subito dopo un concerto. Si sciolsero nel 2000, il tour che stavano portando avanti in quell'anno fu interrotto a causa dei fatti dell'11 settembre e non appena tornati negli States Anselmo tornò a dedicarsi ai propri progetti. I fratelli Abbott fondarono un nuovo gruppo i Damageplan, che ebbe da subito un buon successo. Durante un concerto l' 8 dicembre 2004, lo stesso giorno dell'omicidio di John Lennon, un "fan" riuscì a salire sul palco e uccise il chitarrista Dimebag Darrell, e altre tre persone, con alcuni colpi di pistola.)

11. Run To The Hills - Iron Maiden (1982)

(Nota personale: Gruppo heavy metal britannico nato nel 1975, deve il proprio nome allo strumento di tortura conosciuto come verdine di Norimberga o vergine di ferro, chiamato in inglese iron maiden. Accusati di satanismo per il loro terzo album "The number of the Beast", qui il video preso sempre dal concerto Rock in Rio. La fama mondiale il gruppo la raggiunge con l'album "Poweslave" che li porterà in un tour di 11 mesi e 300 concerti. Le accuse di satanismo li accompagnarono anche in altri album come ad esempio "Seventh son of a Seventh son", di cui vi propongo "Can I play with Madness" qui, accuse rafforzate dal legame con il solito e sempre presente occultista Aleister Crowley. Gli album che seguirono non furono molto apprezzati dai fan a causa di un sound più intimista o comunque un po' meno aggressivo. Il rilancio iniziò nel 2000 con il ritorno ad un sound più vicino ai primi album grazie al rientro nella band di alcuni componenti. Attualmente sono impegnati in un tour. Memorabilia: Eddie the Head è un loro "simbolo" quel curioso zombie a cui fanno interpretare le copertine dei loro dischi e che riveste un ruolo importante nelle coreografie dei concerti. In "The number of the beast" il pezzo recitato all'inizio della canzone è letto da un imitatore di Vincent Price, e si tratta di un brano del libro dell' Apocalisse.)

10. Welcome To The Jungle - Guns N Roses (1987)

(Note personali: gruppo hard & heavy statunitense, formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1985. Il loro primo album, "Appetite for Destruction", vendette oltre 25 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo e contiene "Welcome To The Jungle", "Paradise City" e "Sweet Child O Mine". Gli album che seguiro "Use your illusion 1", "Use your illusion 2" furono rilasciati parallelamente allo "Use your illusion tour" e segnano un cambiamento nelle sonorità della band che le rendono più accessibili come ad esempio "Don't cry", qui. Il loro ultimo album è "The spaghetti incident?" e contiene solo cover si brani degli anni settanta e ottanta.)

(Nota personale: I Metallica sono un gruppo trash metal formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1981. Il loro primo album "Kill 'em All" (1983) vende di 5 milioni di copie ed è considerato rea i più importanti del genere thrash metal con canzoni come "Hit the Lights",qui, "The Four Horsemen", qui. Successo bissato dall'album successivo "Ride the Lightning", che presentando delle sonorità melodiche ed introspettive e dei testi con elementi più ricercati vendette 8 milioni di copie. Nel 1986 esce "Master of puppets", qui la titletrack, che vende 12 milioni di copie. È considerato da alcuni il miglior lavoro della band e per molti è un punto cardine del metal che ha influenzato molti altri gruppi. Dopo un periodo di pausa, dovuta alla tragica morte del loro bassista, i Metallica pubblicano nel 1988 il loro album più tecnico "...And justice for all" che vendette 14 milioni di copie. Nel 1991 uscì l'album di maggior successo commerciale denominato "Black Album" che vende 23 milioni di copie. Il cambiamento di stile iniziato con "...And justice for all" portò i Metallica a produrre album dalle sonorità più accessibili ma che furono criticati da molti: la motivazione delle critiche vedeva il gruppo come più attento a far soldi che a suonare heavy metal.)

7. Ace Of Spades - Motörhead (1980)

(Nota personale: formatosi nel 1975 è un gruppo hard e heavy metal britannico. I primi successi arrivarono nel 1979 con i dischi "Overkill", la cui titletrack, qui, è fondamentale per il genere heavy metal. e "Bomber". L'album "Ace of spades" lanciò la band in tutta Europa e grazie al successivo album live "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith" arrivò la fama a livello mondiale. Nonostante i successi avuti, solo nel 1990 una grande etichetta musicale si interessò al gruppo, il risultato fu il disco "1916", una riflessione sulla prima guerra mondiale e sui suoi massacri. Album che viene considerato uno dei migliori del gruppo ed ottenne anche la nomination ai Grammy Awards. Il matrimonio con questa etichetta durò poco e nel 1993 il gruppo pubblico in proprio il disco "Bastards": una definizione dell'ex casa produttrice. Nel 2004 esce "Inferno" disco che riportò la band al grande successo e che è uno dei più heavy metal della storia del gruppo. Memorabilia: da ricordare la "ö" nel nome della band che viene anche usata in alcuni titoli di loro canzoni.)

3. Walk This Way - Aerosmith (1975)

(Nota personale: il gruppo si forma nel 1970 a Boston e sono tra gli artisti che hanno influenzato la musica degli anni settanta nonché tra quelli di maggior successo: oltre 140 milioni di dischi venduti. Il successo arriva nel 1975 con l'album "Toys in the attic" che contiene canzoni come "Walk this way" e "Sweet emotion". Successo confermato con l'album successivo "Rocks" che è tra le fonti di ispirazione di vari artisti. Si dovrà attendere il 1987 per vedere ritornare gli Aerosmith ai massimi livelli, e lo fanno grazie a "Walk this way" questa volta cantata con il gruppo rap Run DMC. Negli anni '90 usciranno gli album "Get a grip" (1993) e "Nine Lives" (1997) entrambi ottimi lavori che portano la band verso nuove sonorità più pop. Mentre nel 1998 comporranno la colonna sonora del film Armageddon "I don't want to miss a thing", qui. Il loro ultimo studio album risale al 2004 "Honkin' on Bobo" e rappresenta un ritorno al blues rock dei primi tempi. Memorabilia: durante il tour del disco "Rock in a Hard place" Steven Tyler collassò sul palco.)

2. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (1991)

(Nota personale: gruppo statunitense formatosi nel 1987 appartenenti al genere grunge. Il successo mondiale arriva con l'album del 1991 "Nevermind" che contiene pezzi come "Smells like teen spirit", "Come as you are", qui, e "Lithium", qui. L'album succesivo, 1992, "Incesticide" non incontra un molto favore nel pubblico, colpa il sound troppo duro e diverso da quello di "Nevermind" e più vicino al loro album d'esordio "Bleach". "In utero" è il terzo album con sonorità ancora più vicine a quelle di "Bleach" con pezzi forti come la molto criticata "Rape me" ("Violentami"), qui, mentre l'ultimo album della band è "MTV Unplugged in New York" in cui si esibiscono in un concerto acustico. Da ricordare la cover della canzone di David Bowie "The man who sold the world", qui. La fine della band coincide con la morte di Cobain avvenuta nell'aprile del 1994: suicidio, ma per alcuni non andò così.)

1. Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple (1973)

(Nota personale: sono un gruppo britannico nato nel 1968 dalla fusione di due band per volere dei rispettivi manager. Il gruppo è considerato tra i più influenti degli anni 70, e pionieri con i Led Zeppelin e i Black Sabbath dell'hard rock e dell'heavy metal. La consacrazione come band mondiale avviene nel 1972 con l'album "Machine Head" di cui fa parte anche "Smoke on the water". A seguito della tournée in Giappone esce l'album "Made in Japan" annoverato tra le pietre miliari della storia dell'hard rock. Nel 1973 esce "Who do we think we are", che segnò la fine della band nella sua formazione originale. La definitiva separazione si ebbe nel 1975 durante una tournée il chitarrista Tommy Bolin, ebbe una semiparalisi al braccio sinistro a causa di una iniezione di eroina. Il tour continuò tra gravi difficoltà ed al concerto di Liverpool il cantante David Coverdale, abbandonò il palco furibondo. Bolin morì pochi mesi dopo. La band si riformò solo nel 1984 e pubblicarono l'album "Perfect Strangers" e fecero un tour mondiale. Attualmente ancora in attività il loro ultimo album risale al 2005 "Rapture of the deep". Su richiesta di Bob Geldof parteciparono alla giornata Live 8. Memorabilia: il pezzo "Smoke on the water" trae ispirazione dall'incendio che distrusse tutta l'attrezzatura di Frank Zappa, che con il suo gruppo si esibiva al casinò della città di Montreaux, dove erano presenti anche i Deep Pourple per la registrazione di "Machine Head". Durante il concerto al "Nassau Coliseum" di Long Island del 1976, il batterista dei Led Zeppelin si appropriò di un microfono salì sul palco e interruppe il concerto per annunciare l'uscita di un nuovo album dei Led Zeppelin. Concluse insultando il chitarrista Bolin.)

Die Geschichte der Platte steht unter einem schwarzen Ereigniss: Am 19. Februar 1980 erstickt Bon Scott, der keine Flasche an sich vorüber ziehen sehen konnte, am eigenen Erbrochenen im Auto seines Kumpels Alistair Kinnear. Die mittlerweile recht erkleckliche Fanschar rund um den Planeten ist geschockt. Die Frage, ob die Band weitermacht, oder sich trennt, ist schnell gelöst: Am 8. April 1980 wird Brian Johnson (* 5. Oktober 1947, Newcastle, Schottland), Ex-Frontmann der poppigen Hard-Rock-Formation Geordie (u.a. "All Because Of You"), als Nachfolger präsentiert und nur wenige Tage danach gehen die Aufnahmen des noch mit Bon Scott geplanten "Back In Black" im Studio auf den Bahamas weiter.

Hämische Kommentare in der Presse bei Veröffentlichung stehen kurze Zeit später die immensen weltweiten Verkaufszahlen gegenüber - Pole Position im Vereinigten Königreich, Position vier in den USA und ein nicht zu verachtender Rang drei in Deutschland. Allzu lange muss Brian Johnson also nicht kämpfen, um aus dem übergroßen Schatten seines verstorbenen Vorgängers heraus zu treten.

Back in Black ist das bis heute erfolgreichste AC/DC-Album und gehört mit ca. 42 Millionen verkauften Exemplaren zu den meistverkauften Platten überhaupt. Allein in den USA ging es über 21 Millionen mal über den Ladentisch.

And here we go. Back to the words. Thank goodness. Writing is my escape, my other lover, my joy, my offspring and my anti-depressant. That's a lot to ask from a single thing, I realize. But so far, it is all of those things and more.

Granted, I realize that's all publishing news. I've got writing news--what I'm working on, what's dragging, what's running full-bore and what's making me wish I could visit Italy again--but you'll have to wait for it. Sorry. My weekend has arrived (as of 6 pm on Saturday evening) and I'm off to make the most of it. Six Feet Under (conocida también como SFU) es una banda de Death Metal y Groove Metal procedente de Estados Unidos.

La banda comenzó como un proyecto paralelo de Chris Barnes, ex vocalista de Cannibal Corpse, pero con el tiempo tomó fuerza y se retiró de Cannibal Corpse para dedicarse en lleno a Six Feet Under. Uno de los fundadores fue Allen West (Obituary), pero salió de la banda en 1997 siendo reemplazado por Steve Swanson en 1998.

Las canciones contienen una fuerte crítica social, abarcando temas como la política, muertes, asesinatos, sin dejar de lado el gore de las canciones de Cannibal Corpse.

Además de sus discos, la banda ha grabado dos de covers. El primero, llamado Graveyard Classics, tiene covers de Venom, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Jimi Hendrix, entre otros. Graveyard Classics II es un completo cover al disco Back in Black de AC/DC.

Paul Booth es el encargado de hacer algunas portadas de los discos de Six Feet Under.
