<title><![CDATA[that john denver's full of shit.]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On Friday, totally spur-of-the-moment, Kelsey and I decided to go meet up with some friends in the mountains for the Fourth. I've never spent a Fourth of July in the mountains, but I figured it would be a pretty wonderful way to celebrate America's birthday. (Among the mountains that inspired "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_the_beautiful" target="_blank">America the Beautiful</a>," no less.) Picture this: two ridiculously happy girls wearing ridiculously large sunglasses, riding top-down in a convertible blasting Paul Simon, driving west toward the mountains. So cliche, and so amazing.</p>
<p>We went to watch the fireworks at this large field/sports complex in Fraser (which is near Winter Park, for those of you non-Coloradans), and got to enjoy a live band and delicious brats and Coors Lights before freezing our asses off for about two hours. (Your mom was right: bring a coat. The mountains are ever so slightly colder than the city, and sundresses do not keep you particularly warm.) The freezing-our-asses-off part was worth it, though, because the fireworks show was amazing. Somehow we picked the best spot on the lawn, and the fireworks ended up being directly over our heads. Fabulous. I love how fireworks amaze and awe people from three to 93. We were a bunch of 21- and 22-year-old boys and girls (by technical standards, adults), and we were ooh-ing and aah-ing and screaming "WOW!" like a group of toddlers who had no idea what those lights up in the sky were. I love that.</p>
<p>If you haven't noticed yet, I'm completely and totally obsessed with the state of Colorado. I'm not particularly outdoorsy, but I love that my state is, and I love living in a great city that's only two hours away from some of the most amazing mountains in the world. It doesn't get much better than that. You know that Baz Luhrmann song about sunscreen? Where he says "Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft"? To that, I'd add: Live in Colorado once. Period. You may never want to leave.</p>
<p>My camera drowned in a Blue Moon shower last weekend, so I didn't take any photos while I was up in Fraser, but the area basically looks like this:</p>

<p><span><strong>On her knees splaying out at a 45-degree angle during the interview</strong>: “The whole experience is so primal… Just look at how I’m sitting here with my legs apart. This is the way you have to sit when you’re pregnant.”</p>
<p><strong>On her country life</strong>: “I’ve been in Tennessee, just sitting. We have a farm there, and I have an organic vegetable garden. This is a path I’d not taken before. My mum’s always gardened. My sister gardens. And I’ve now conformed to the Kidman women’s hobby of gardening. And it is just a hobby. I’m not feeding the troops. (<em>laughs</em>) There’s a softness to the Tennessee landscape that I just love. It’s very beautiful out there. We have deer and wild turkeys.”</p>
<p><strong>On how carrying a child is something new and overwhelming</strong>: “When I first saw the baby on the ultrasound, I started crying. I didn’t think I’d get to experience that in my lifetime. I like the unpredictable nature of it. To feel life growing with you is something very, very special, and I’m going to embrace that completely. I don’t believe in flittering around the edges of things. You’re either going to walk through life and experience it fully or you’re going to be a voyeur. And I’m not a voyeur.”</p>
<p><strong>On her and husband Keith Ubran never being apart for more than five days at a time</strong>: “I’m so committed to this relationship, and so is he. I don’t have addiction problems, but love is a very powerful force in my life. It’s my fatal flaw and my virtue.”</p>

La película es una épica al estilo clásico de Hollywood, y me aventuro a decir que puede ser una gran competidora de cara a los Oscar del proximo año. Es típica peli carne de Oscar con solo ver el trailer. Tiene pinta de ser buenísima. Estreno en España, el 26 de Diciembre(si no hay cambios)</p>

<title><![CDATA[EW's New Classics List: Back to the Vault II]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://toddiedowns.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/moulin_rouge.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-159" style="margin:10px;" src="http://toddiedowns.wordpress.com/files/2008/07/moulin_rouge.jpg?w=196" alt="" width="196" height="300" /></a>I've looked over <a title="Entertainment Weekly website" href="http://www.ew.com" target="_blank">Entertainment Weekly</a>'s <a title="Movies" href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20207076_20207387_20207063,00.html" target="_blank">New Classics: Movies</a> list now several times, and something strikes me: I've seen probably 90% of the films listed, but there were only a handful when I read the title that I had a visceral reaction of a hand-pumping "Yes! I LOVE that movie!" I recall enjoying the vast majority of them, but very few of them were memorable enough that I consider them "repeater-worthy", i.e. would want to watch them again on several (or even one) repeat viewings.</p>
<p>My showcase film today is a notable exception. It's one where when I saw the title, I heaved a gigantic contented sigh, and said, "Oh, yes. They got that one right." (And before you ask, I do talk to myself - all the time, in fact). It is No. 10 on the New Classics movie list: <a title="IMdb - Moulin Rouge!" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203009/" target="_blank"><strong>Moulin Rouge</strong>!</a> (2001). This film, directed by <a title="Wikipedia Entry - Baz Luhrmann" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baz_Luhrmann" target="_blank">Baz Luhrmann</a> and written by Luhrmann and <a title="IMdb - Craig Pearce" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0668902/" target="_blank">Craig Pearce</a>, is pure melodrama injected with absinthe. It's definitely a love-it-or-hate-it kind of movie, and I can respectfully acknowledge those people who hated it with a deep and abiding passion.  But you can't be indifferent about it, and how many movies can you say <em>that</em> about?</p>
<p>The plot follows a classic romance formula: a naive writer, Christian (<a title="Wikipedia Entry - Ewan McGregor" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ewan_McGregor" target="_blank">Ewan McGregor</a>), gets drawn into the world of the Moulin Rouge and falls in love with its star, Satine (<a title="Wikipedia Entry - Nicole Kidman" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicole_Kidman" target="_blank">Nicole Kidman</a>). There's a villain and, of course, a secret deadly illness, and lots of singing and dancing. Despite the fine acting by Kidman and McGregor <em>[random digression: Ewan McGregor singing "Come What May" is perhaps the single most romantic scene in filmdom EVER. Is it warm in here? Pardon me while I fan myself a moment.]</em>, where the movie truly excels, and what lifts it into the realm of the "repeater-worthy" movie, is its use of style and tone. From the opening frames until the closing credits, Luhrmann maintains the frenetic, kinetic energy through the saturated colors, the camera angles and fast cuts, even the actors' pacing of the dialogue. It takes what could have been a bland, formulaic disaster of a musical and makes it utterly brilliant and new.</p>

<p>So last week I saw that flick <em>Mongol</em>, you know, the new epic about Ghengis Khan made by a Russian director (Sergei Bodrov), starring a Japanese dude (Tadonubo Asano), nominated for an Oscar, and inexplicably released stateside in the middle of the summer movie season.  It was a pretty good movie that held my interest for two hours by exposing me to a culture I know little about and featuring a well played out historical epic story arc complete with requisite kick-ass battle scenes.  Sitting there getting frosty in the air-conditioned theater while the heat and humidity raged outside, I couldn't help thinking this was a movie better suited for the prestigious autumnal season.  With the most gluttonous of film seasons in full swing (is <em>The Dark Knight</em> out yet?), I decided to take a look ahead at my favorite season in film and weather. </p>
<p>Here I present my list of most anticipated movies for Fall 2008:</p>

<p>The Stars:  Derek Luke, John Leguizamo, James Gandolfini, Joseph Gordon Levitt, some cute Italian kid, Alexandra Maria Lara, and a boatload of other people and familiar faces</p>
<p>The Scoop:  Okay, so I will admit it right here, right now.  I love Spike Lee.  I even liked <em>She Hate Me</em>.  He's a cunning provocateur who's had numerous peaks and valleys in his career but just won't stop no matter what and always seems to get his name in the papers--witness Clint Eastwood telling him recently to "shut his face".  Spike is coming off the most commercially successful film of his long career with <em>Inside Man</em>.  With this adaptation of the novel by James McBride about a group of African-American soldiers trapped in Tuscany during WWII, he's giving us his first epic since <em>Malcom X</em>.    The trailer for this film is a smashing success that manages to sell the film as both a murder mystery and a searing <em>Saving Private Ryan</em> style WWII drama.  This latest Spike Lee Joint has so many great things going for it:  an auteur on the precipice of a personal artistic and commercial Renaissance (much like the one Scorsese recently went through with <em>The Aviator</em> and <em>The Departed</em>); a great storyline that has the potential to provoke discussions of history, race, religion and politics in a historic Presidential election year; and a multi-ethnic cast that includes a cute Italian kid, and as a special bonus for me, the devastatingly seductive Alexandra Maria Lara, whose beauty alone made Francis Ford Coppola's recent debacle <em>Youth Without Youth</em> worth watching.</p>

<p>2.  <em>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button</em>  (scheduled release date:  12/19)</p>

<p>The Stars:  Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Julia Ormond</p>
<p>The Scoop:  This is the fantastic case of a gimmick film (it tells the not so simple story of a man who ages backwards, folks) with a literary pedigree (adapted from a story by F. Scott Fitzgerald).  I first saw the trailer for this in front of the latest <em>Indiana Jones</em> flick, and the packed house was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.  Its epic scope appears to be a complete departure for director Fincher, and its unique story and images sweep over you in the masterfully crafted trailer-much kudos thus far to the marketing team.  This film has the potential to be monumentally huge or just another curiosity grabbing for Oscar gold at Christmastime.  Will Fincher (robbed of an Oscar nod for <em>Zodiac</em> last year) and uber-star Pitt (robbed last year for <em>The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford</em>) finally get their due?</p>

<p>The Stars:  Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Australia!</p>
<p>The Scoop:  Baz the Spazz changes gears completely with this big historical epic depicting heroism and romance against the backdrop of a Japanese attack on Australia during WWII.  The trailer sells the imagery and scope of the film very well, making it look <em>Gone with the Wind</em> <em>Down Under</em>, though the frame story of Kidman telling a fairy tale to the Aborigine girl seems a bit strained (and remarkably similar to Tarsem's <em>The Fall</em>.)  Luhrmann appears to have abandoned his hyper kinetic style for the dreadful sumptuousness that always seems to sell tickets during the big holidays at the end of the year.  Kidman and Jackman certainly look the parts, and lord knows they could both use a big hit.   Will critics be eager to embrace the new Luhrmann after a seven year hiatus?  More than any other film, I think critics have the chance to make or break this one.</p>

<p>The Scoop:  Brit Joe Wright atones for his period pieces by making this American set musical biopic.  Downey Jr. is back on the A-list, the director is taking on a genre held in high favor in recent years, and playing a schizophrenic musical genius seems right up Foxx's alley.  There are no trailers or official sites yet, but I can't wait to see what kind of tracking long shots Wright cooks up for this one--I'm picturing a shot the begins with an overhead dolly and travels down and through the crowd and orchestra at a grand concert hall.</p>

<p>The Scoop:  I have to admit, the plot of this one (from a novel by Richard Yates) sounds like a snore-fest:  a young couple in 1950's Connecticut deal with problems and such.  However, Mendes has yet to make a bad film, suburban dystopia is his bread and butter (<em>American Beauty</em>, anyone?), and the reunion of <em>Titanic</em> stars Leo and Kate in a Christmastime release give this film some palpable buzz.  No trailers or official site have appeared yet. </p>

<p><em>Changeling</em>:  10/31.  The latest from Clint Eastwood has some mixed buzz coming from its Cannes' premier.  This 1920's set psychological thriller about a mother who begins to doubt the identity of her young son who has been returned to her after going missing will have a hard line to tow while it tries to convince people it's not a remake of a horror film with the same name and is instead a prestigious Oscar bid for its uber-star Angelina Jolie.</p>
<p><em>Defiance</em>:  12/2.  Yet another WWII epic, this one is based on a true story and staring Daniel Craig.  Directed by Edward Zwick, the film of course reeks of quality, and the trailer has been getting some good buzz (at least amongst my friends and family), but it looks nobly cliched to me.  If that new Spike Lee Joint strikes a cord, this runs the risk of being overshadowed as the later release.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Der Welt größte <strong>Nicole Kidman</strong>-Anhängerin bin ich nicht gerade und auch<strong> Moulin Rouge</strong> habe ich noch nie bis zum Ende durchgehalten, doch der neueste Streich des australischen Regisseurs <span style="color:#993300;"><strong>Baz Luhrmann</strong></span> (Romeo + Julia, Moulin Rouge) wirkt entgegen aller Befürchtungen seiner typischen Stakkato-Schnitt-Torturen recht vielversprechend. Ein Epos im Gefolge David Leans, inklusive Krieg, Sonnenuntergängen im Outback und einen kantigen Viehtreiber. Ein Aussie muss man nicht sein, um diese Inhaltsstoffe interessant zu finden.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Neben Frau Kidman wird in <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong><a title="Australia" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455824/" target="_blank">Australia</a></strong></span> ihr Landsmann <strong>Hugh Jackman</strong>, der die ursprünglich für Russel Crowe vorgesehene Rolle des Leading Man übernommen hat, zu sehen sein. Der <strong>Trailer</strong> sieht zwar irgendwie nach Oscar und Flop zugleich aus. Doch ungeachtet aller Box Office-Ergebnisse und vergoldeten Statuetten - man kann bei Luhrmann davon ausgehen, dass sein erster Film seit sieben Jahren alles sein wird, nur nicht gewöhnlich.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Der Inhalt des Abenteuerepos' sieht laut <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong><a title="Australia Inhalt" href="http://www.filmstarts.de/kritiken/91895-Australia.html" target="_blank">Filmstarts.de</a></strong></span> wie folgt aus:</p>

Off the bat you might think this is a crazy idea, but when <em>Iron Man</em>, <em>Narnia</em>, <em>Inidana Jones</em> and <em>Wall-E</em> prove complete and utter dominance over the box office, we can see why family films are the "green" way to go. All I really want to see in this is the Fraggles eat some Doozer buildings, which causes the Doozers to begin a Che-like revolution against their furry, multi-colored oppressors. Now that's comedy. <p>5 - Jonah Hill has been on a wild ride these past few years. Stealing scenes and winning over comedy critics in many of Judd Apatow's recent hits, like <em>Knocked Up</em>, <em>Superbad</em> and <em>Forgetting Sarah Marshall</em>, but now he's making a step I could never have seen coming. He is reportedly heading up the project, and writing the script, for <a href="http://www.filmdrunk.com/post.phtml?pk=1745" target="_blank">a silver screen version of <em>21 Jump Street</em></a>. I'm not one to knock the show, it brought us Johnny Depp, Dustin Nguyen and Peter Deluise, not to mention a killer theme song by actress/star Holly Robinson Peete, but I don't know if this is something that translates well. Narc'ing in high schools and busting pot rings might not hold the weight. Yet, if there is a <em>Booker</em> cameo by Richard Grieco, or if he actually turns out to be the villain, now we're talking gold. Pero cuando un grupo de barones ingleses intentan apoderarse de sus tierras, decididamente une sus fuerzas con un joven (<strong>Hugh Jackman</strong>) para que le ayude a transportar su ganado a lo largo del más peligroso territorio australiano, llegando hasta Darwin, un sitio que está siendo atacado por las fuerzas japonesas.</p>
