In today’s society, you will find a tremendous amount of stress cast upon your shoulders.

In today's society, you will find a tremendous amount of stress cast upon your shoulders.

Often times, you may ask yourself, "How many burdens can one person carry?" With the stresses of work, or lack thereof, and family, this question is quite justified. I know from personal experience, the trials and tribulations that life hurls at you. For instance, as many are aware, I am currently suffering through a forced holiday. I do not return to work until September.

[caption id="attachment_990" align="alignright" width="159" caption="Pammy's Favorite Drink !"][/caption]

My concern that I will not have sufficient beer money is troubling, at best. As it is, I have had to ration my beer to a ridiculous, four cans of Miller Light per evening, excluding Fridays and Saturdays, which on those days, I average approximately as many as I fucking feel like having.

Because I am a bossy, caring individual, I have decided to take it upon myself to tell you people who need help, how to manage your fucking lives. It's called "self-help," but as the late, great George Carlin said, "It's not self-help. It's help!"

Installment One of "Shut The Fuck Up And Stop Whining Before I Punch You In The Fucking Face™ explores the issue of time management.

Managing time is an important concept that eludes many. One should think that since the invention of calendars, a person would easily balance their schedules by noting the event, appointment, or what have you, inside the little fucking square designated to the day and number which represent a fucking date. It isn't fucking rocket science. Fuck Blackberries and electronic date organizers. Those little fuckers are designed to piss people off and make shit confusing. Go get your ass a damn pen or a pencil, even a crayon will do, and write the shit that is so fucking important to you down on the calendar. Fuck, you can prick your fucking finger and make a notation in blood for all I care.

Tardiness is absolutely unacceptable to me. I couldn't give a shit less about your excuses...unless of course, you are dying, or you are taking some fucking initiative and stopping at the fucking store to purchase beer. If I have plans to do something with you and you do not manage your time well, it ultimately affects me. Why is that so fucking hard to understand? The later you are, the more drunk I become, which really cuts the chances that I will be in a suitable state to mingle in public. It's a lose/lose situation, and it is all of your fucking fault.

To stand me up is highly dangerous. Whether you forget to write our date down on the fucking calendar or you are under the mistaken impression that standing me up to do something with someone else would be more fun, you are going to find a severed horse head tucked in nice and snug at the foot of your bed. I'm totally "Godfather" gangsta like that.

If you are not a fan of having dead animals laying in bed with you, and if you would like to avoid as many complications in your life as possible, all you need to do is put some good time management skills to use. If you do this, you can alleviate a large sum of the burdens that weigh on your weak, weak shoulders. And remember, if all else fails, take a deep, relaxing breath and shut the fuck up and stop whining because I will punch you in your fucking face.

Ed. Let me personally thank Pammy for her incredibly heroic stab at sobriety; more and more, we grow to love your rantz and understand that BEER RULES the [fucking] WORLD !!! Fuckin' A®!!

This post is really about all that funny knowledge you pick up when building bikes in London, trying

This post is really about all that funny knowledge you pick up when building bikes in London, trying to source the stuff that would really look cool, finding the more eccentric stuff that would make a difference. It's a jungle out there, but best of all, most of it can be safely accessed online so yes, you can get your hands dirty, but most of it is pretty manageable and not too scary, really.

So here goes a general list of places to find stuff (in no particular order)

Hub Jub

Hub Jub have got Nitto nailed and anything else Japanese, fixie related and cool. A great collection of bits like anodised handlebars and useful source of stupid things like 15mm Dura Ace track bolts for your wheels, which for some reason seem rarer than gold at the moment. And they really do have some very eccentric stuff too like MKS chaintugs and front brakes that mount on your undrilled track fork legs etc.. worth their weight in gold these guys..

Fresh Tripe bikes

Fresh Tripe have got a lot of cool accessories, from elk hide bar protectors to Yancopads (only UK importers of these cool fabric thingies for keeping your frame looking nice), hats, brake levers, grips and whatever your fixie fetish desires. Friendly bunch too.

London Fixie Bike

These guys are your swiss army knife to fixie building - they do things like CNC machined spacers to perfect your chainline, if your hub thread is knackered and that cog won't stay put - not to worry, these guys have a solution for that problem too.. They even show you how to convert a Shimano M756 hub (normally for taking disc breaks) into a rear fixie hub.. So thinking about building your own fixie? - look here first!

Billy's BMX, skate and bike shop

They're your back-up source of fixie bits, sometimes I struggle to find stuff on their website and have to google it to find it, but it's there and reasonably priced too and is delivered pretty sharpish as well.

Brick Lane Bikes

This is the veritable magpie's nest of fixie related goodies and hard-to-find items - anywhere where you can just turn up and buy a rare Japanese-made bell or MKS pedals is a find in these days of homogenised shop inventory - in fact the shop is where you should make an excursion, it is truly an experience and super inspiring to see all those gorgeous old frames hanging in the ceiling that Brick Lane cycles source from all over Europe.. vintage Colnagos, Pinarellos.. you name it!

Pearson Cycles

Pearson are far too underrated as a bike dealership and maker. They produce the fabulous Pearson Touché, whose frame is finished to such a great degree (no weld lines or marks anywhere) that you'd be forgiven for thinking the frame cost twice the price. Lovely geometry, dead comfy whether in its existing off the peg mile muncher set up or even if you pimp it like I've done with mine. If their other bikes are anything like the standard they've set on the cheapest frame they sell you are on to an absolute winner whatever your budget!

Planet X and On One warehouse

Planet X are another under-rated source of cool kit and some lovely frames. Their brand new Stealth Pro Carbon track and time trial frame is a certified head-turner and they have also recently added a track section to their site sporting a good selection of Nitto bars and other fixie paraphenalia. Planet X are the stealthy, racy big borther of On-one and also do some lovely race and TT bikes and their man Ian Cammish is the TT expert and a great source of advice, ideas and help.

On-One

Someone explain to me this - On-one and Planet X are two separate brands that maybe live in two different places in the UK, but they share the same webshop and site (check the tabs on the top)? Anyway - On-one is the home of the Pompino, a lovely fixie frame and super-keenly priced, yet excellent stuff like beautiful alloy track sprockets, recently they were even offering 12T ones for the true power-houses out there. They also do the lightest pair of alloy track wheels you can buy at under £150 (something like 1400g for the pair!)

Condor

Condor are like your posh fixie tailor - the shop is filled to the brim with kit, the staff friendly - problem is you invariably have to go there in person to get it. I like them and their bikes are gorgeous, granted - but sometimes I send a little prayer to them that they would get their weird and wonderful collection of stuff online so lazy sods like me could buy more of it without having to first travel to get it..

Ben's Cycle all the way from Milwaukee, yeehaa!

OK he is far away I grant you that, but when nobody on this side of the Atlantic is stocking Vittoria Zaffiro Pro tyres in all white which would look just the business on your new fixie, this is the man to call.. He also has a very nice collection of anodised parts, sugino crank sets, EAI Brass Knuckles and so on and so forth.. you can tell I'm trying actively not to go on the site too often!

NJS Export

This is beautiful in its simplicity - Gabriel gets his mitts on beautiful ex-Keirin track frames and sells them, straight from Japan. So the real deal, straight from Japan, over to you int he post. Mind you, the prices are not that bad since Keirin frames seem to cost a fortune wherever you look, I kinda like the fact that they have been used.. somehow makes them more 'real' than something straight out of the factory..

King Kog

King Kog are your anti-establishment rebel bike shop - the Ramones of fixed-gear cycling. Expect some super-cool T-shirts, select bits and pieces -

Wiggle

Ok all of us need basics and at a good price and most basic and even not so basic things, Wiggle will stock. OK more eccentric stuff? Look away now, but you can get many useful components here at not too a heartstopping price oh and things like energy bars and drinks too if you are seriously into your exercise. Always a good place to use as a benchmark. The best thing about Wiggle is their delivery - it is honed to surgical precision and predictability - order something that is in stock before 12 and you will have it next day, always and forever. Gotta love them for it!

Chainreaction Cycles

Great collection of bits, more eccentric stuff too and also a good collection of gubbins, shims and whatnot that can come in handy when you are trying to convert a beloved steed into a a fixie monster. It seems that Wiggle and Chainreaction are locked in a duel about prices, some things you will find are cheaper on Wiggle, some on Chain reaction so the jury is out, I use both.

Ribble Cycles

And then there is Ribble - Ribble are really mostly for the roadies out there and they even do their own custom bike builder. Another great collection of components and often not quite the same that you would find on Wiggle or Chainreaction and sometimes when those two have run out of stuff, who you gonna call? Ribble!

Pro Bike Kit

Almost forgot these guys - they have a great collection of really racy stuff, I use them mainly for clothing actually, but have bought odds and sods component-wise from them too as invariably they will have stuff that no one else has. My favourite of this summer: Descente windproof sleeveless baselayers! They rock! Means you can wear a T-shirt or jersey out on a ride and not freeze to death as soon as the sun goes into a cloud (which it does a lot in the UK at the moment!).

Parker International

Parker are in a league of their own really, again some brands that none of the others stock and more extensive stock on brands than many of the others - they also have an exhaustive collection of Assos gear - slightly slower on deliveries, but it is worth the wait.

Prendas Ciclismo

For all your retro desires - Prendas has you sorted - jerseys, caps anything of yesteryear and cool cycling related - you'll find it here and often at bargain prices too. Great place for pressies too!

So there we are - my run-down of useful places to find stuff. I reckon that between those you will be hard pushed not to find whatever it is you need, whether to make your bike work, perfect that chain line, make sure the wheel doesn't slip (check out Hub Jub's Chain tugs!) or simply make that frame look cool or what the hell, make yourself look cool in the process! It's all here and any more places you know of and think I should know of too - you know what the comments section is for!

Nitrotracker 0.4

It has been out now for a couple of days, and i'm telling ya,..

It rocks! The new envelope editor and loop function really make the homebrew DS application shine. Making music on the go has evolved from heavy laptop wielding to lightweight DS juggling. Nitrotracker has really grown from a great idea to well, a VERY great idea. Hats off to you, Tobias Weyand.

It was one of the most wished for features on the users wishlist, looping. The loops act like you would expect from a tracker application. The only nag i could find was; looped sounds won't react to the note-off trigger. My experience with trackers has been limited up untill now, so that could be the reason. (Edit: Just a one time bug, Note-off works fine) I fixed this by using the other new feature:

The Volume envelope editor. ADSR was one of my personal wishes for the next update of Nitrotracker. It's now included as of 0.4. And, you can also draw the envelope using the stylus.

Now i hope drawing samples will be included in 0.5. And maybe, just maybe, A Modulation source/envelope. Maybe i'm asking for to much.. :)

To celebrate the 0.4 release of this cool application, i made a samplepack as an addition to the packs allready available on http://nitrotracker.tobw.net/.

- A noise (drum) kit
- A synth Drum kit
- and a Saw-tooth. (C0 to C5)

Get it HERE. Enjoy!!

EDIT : Tobias Weyand just replied to my email. The sample pack is now also available through the official Nitrotracker website!

I probably should have looked ahead in my schedule and realized, before I started a regularly occurring section of this blog, that I wouldn't be near a computer five Fridays in a row.

Oh well. I guess having Friday's Bits on Thursday just goes with my wacky personality. You'll have to forgive the missing posts while I'm on vacation July 23–Aug. 1.

Linkages!

Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog has begun. And is awesome!

Stephenie Meyer is driving me mad with anticipation ... along with all the other (2 or 3?) Twilight fans out there. Today's quote is NOT FAIR, STEPHENIE. Not fair.

Blurbages!

Once again, words of wisdom from The Park Bench:

So yesterday, the husband and I went to see Hellboy II: The Golden Army which I’ve decided to retitle, Holy Cow, Hellboy’s Starring in 'Pan’s Labyrinth II: New and Improved with Kittens!' Sure, that title’s going to make the marketing a bit difficult what with squeezing so many words onto the poster and all, but I feel it’s a fairly accurate representation of the film.

I have yet to see the movie, but Pan's Labyrinth is all I can see when I watch the trailers. So much so that I was surprised to realize that Guillermo Del Toro wrote/produced/directed/whatevered the first Hellboy. I'm hoping that he doesn't bring too much of it over into the Hobbit movies too ...

Cooties explained (via Mental Floss):

As a part of science’s never-ending quest to apply fancy-sounding names to everyday phenomena, psychologists at the University of Pennsylvania have coined the word “touch transference.” It’s what happens—in our minds, at least—when a package of toilet paper touches your fillet mignon at the grocery store, and for the briefest moment, you think: “Eww.” We’re talking about cooties here: when something gross touches something otherwise benign, and “infects” it. Turns out, according to a new article in Time, that touch transference holds powerful sway over a lot of people; it certainly drives business in the cleaning products industry, and guides supermarket owners’ decisions on how to organize goods on their shelves. “In a series of studies, the researchers found not only that some products—trash bags, diapers, kitty litter, tampons—evoke a subconscious feeling of disgust even before they’re used for their ultimate messy purposes, but they can also transfer their general ickiness to anything they come in contact with. ‘We were pretty surprised at how strong the effect was,’ says Fitzsimons. ‘This is probably the most robust result in my career.’”

Also interesting was the notion that cooties may have been a very useful thing hundreds of years ago, before humans had any knowledge of germs and the damage they could do. Hence, we’ve always been revolted by things like rotting food. But everybody’s got their own personal set of gross-outs — anybody care to share?

Picturages!

Can I go here, please? And not just because it looks like the Cullens' driveway. ;)

Have you heard about this?
Apparently, Apple Computer Company has released so

Friday, July 11, 2008

Have you heard about this?

Apparently, Apple Computer Company has released some sort of handheld "smart phone" apparatus that they claim will revolutionize the industry.

Dubbed the "i-phone", they say it combines the features of a cordless phone, a miniaturized computing implement and a music player, all into one.

Far be it for me to scoff at such a claim, but let's just leave it at the old axiom of "seeing is believing."

Since I don't see it anywhere, I don't believe it.

I guess that Apple has decided the low-key approach is the best, from a marketing standpoint, as I have yet to find any mention of this in the media.

The most far-fetched part of this whole thing is that they think anybody would be willing to pay almost TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS for such a device!

Um, hello? For a phone???

Earth to cuckoo Apple people: prepare to fail BIG TIME.

Excuse me if I don't rush out to my local eBay re-seller with my StarTac in hand. Better yet, why don't I stay home, tape a calculator and a Walk Man to it and call it a day? There ya go, I just saved 200 bucks.
