There's a few reasons for moving to WordPress from blogspot, but the short of it is that I can now blog from my iPhone, and that I've already got another blog over here, so it makes it easier to manage them both.

God's been good to me, and I plan to do more updates soon.

“A universal trigger for anger is the sense of being endangered. Endangerment can be signaled not just by an outright physical threat but also, as is more often the case, by a symbolic threat to self-esteem or dignity: being treated unjustly or rudely, being insulted or demeaned, being frustrated in pursuing an important goal.” (Goleman, 1995)

Emotional intelligence is a relatively recent concept, which is related to the ability to understand one’s own feelings and behavior as well as the capacity to sense the feelings and needs of others and to utilize this information in a way that enhances interpersonal relationships. Emotional Intelligence is also the capacity to create positive outcomes in our relationships with others and ourselves. Positive outcomes include joy, optimism, and success in work, school, and life. Increasing emotional intelligence has been correlated with better results in leadership, professional and academic, performance, marriage, friendships, and overall health.

Recognizing as well as understanding our feelings and emotions and then, managing their impact on other people must be practiced to internalize the skills being taught. We believe that it is important to take an interest in people and learn to listen to their views, problems and concerns. As previously learned in The Practice of Control, listening is important in communication and is a skill that can be learned as well as improved upon.

Emotional intelligence (EI) encompasses four domains:

1. Self-Awareness.
2. Self-Control.
3. Social-Awareness.
4. Relationship Management.

Self-awareness facilitates both empathy and self-control. Empathy and self- control combine to provide effective relationship management.

Self Awareness is the Foundation. Without self-awareness, we cannot be aware of our emotions. We cannot manage emotions we are not aware of, so our emotions will tend to be out of control. Out of control emotions impair our ability to experience empathy and to connect with others. When our emotions are out of control, our relationships suffer – we do not have social awareness or the ability for social management.

Emotions Are Our Guidance System. Nature developed our emotions over millions of years of evolution. As a result, our emotions have the potential to serve us today as a guidance system. Our emotions let us know when any natural human need is not being met. For example, when we feel lonely, our need for connection with other people is unmet. When we feel afraid, our need for safety is unmet. When we feel rejected, it is our need for acceptance that is unmet.

Perception Is Everything. The way we appraise (see) our environment at any given time is important in determining how we respond emotionally. If we appraise a situation as a threat, put-down, or an insult, we are more likely to respond with anger and negativity.

Blogger v Wordpress - part III

So the decision has been taken. The future for my blog is on Wordpress. I just cannot fail to feel the powerful links through to the blogosphere via tags and the sheer exuberance of the search optimisation at every level. The reporting structure also drives me wild, know as I do now, that "blogger v wordpress", UK newspapers and Viewzi encourage traffic. Yesterday my blog had 74, what Wordpress calls, "views" - not bad for a 16 day operation. I could just tell that my blogspot blog was getting no traffic.

But....I will always miss the beauty of the blogspot blogs, musing with envy whenever I bump into one. And I cannot wait until Wordpress sorts out the ability to put Google ads on our blogs. Though news here, guys, I have just been told to watch this space by someone at Wordpress.

Two webinars and a virtual fair!

We've got two webinars kicking off at work in two days. One is for the call centre industry and the other for security professionals, both run by our suplier On24. They both have really strong editorial content, are to be chaired by editors, boast impressive line-ups of speakers and, most importantly, have attracted an extraordinary number of registrations - at the last count, one had over 700 registrations with many of them coming from abroad. We even make money on them through sponsorship. We have had another webinar confirmed this week and a very strong likelihood of another in the pipeline. It really feels like the beginning of a real webinar business, very much like a typical media company in the US.

Also this week, one of my sister companies ran a two day virtual fair on sustainability. I don't know how it went but the same part of the company ran a virtual international career fair last week and got over 900 visitors to 150 stands. The lowest number of visitors to any stand was over 100. The interface by inXpo is like a early version of Second Life with some real interactivity, as Chris Albrect also describes it in his NewTeeVee blog. During the opening hours, there is a real sense of people dropping by and interacting.

It is pretty cool stuff that both On24 and inXpo supply. What I have asked from both of them, however, is what their product will look like going forward. Take this blogging software that is so easy and downloadable from the web. I do not think it will be that long before you will be able to download webinar software from the web - sales people doing it on completing the sale, for example. What will suppliers who have developed their stuff five years ago do to meet this challenge?

Blogging Wars - Wordpress Vs Blogger

There's a war going on in the blogosphere, and it has nothing to do with bloggers dissing each other on their respective websites. The war is about control of the blogosphere by several great, many good, and tons of terrible blogging platforms. The average newbie now has "too many" options to choose from, and the battle for blogging supremacy is hotter than ever.

At my website and blogs, I'm always asked the question "Is Wordpress better than Blogger?". The answer, of course, is "Yes". But to really understand why, it's important to look at both blogging platforms side-by-side and see which one you really need.
Here's the comparison scale:

1) Ease of Set-up And Use

Yes, it’s much easier to set-up a blog with Blogspot.com and get your own Bloggger account. You can be done in 10 minutes flat. Once you're set-up you can start posting immediately. If you want to add a designer's touch to your blog, there are also tons of blogger templates available for free.
Installing Wordpress however can be a major headache if you don't know what you're doing. Since you're going to host it on your own account, you'll need to download the installation files, upload them to your server, set-up a database, and run the configuration script.

However, if you know which hosting account to get, you can choose one with Cpanel included. With Cpanel, you can do a one-click installation, upgrade and removal of your Wordpress platform.

2) Customization & Advanced Use

Blogger doesn’t allow categories. You can’t sort your articles into different focuses, unless you know how to hack the platform. With Wordpress, not only can you add categories, you can also display each category differently on your main page. In fact with the correct plugins you can even turn your Wordpress into a magazine-like portal.

Publishing with Blogger can be a pain in the ass. It can take forever to post articles, especially if you’re making changes to the entire website. With Wordpress, publishing is much faster, although if you load your system with all kinds of bells and whistles it can be just as frustrating. With a Blogger account, you can get additional features like "Shout Boxes" that improve interaction on your site. You can also get pretty themes and nifty little tools that you can add to the core template files. However, that's as far as you can go with Blogger.

With Wordpress however, the sky is the limit. As cliche as that may sound, not only can you get themes, additional "plugins" and advanced tools, you can also extend Wordpress to far beyond just a blogging platform.
The talk today is about using Wordpress as a complete, user-friendly Content Management System or CMS.

4) Copyrights and Ownership of Content

I started with Blogger and I won’t say that it’s bad. But after a while I started to get frustrated with Blogger, and here’s why: Google Owns Your Content
Google has the authority to shut down your account without warning if they don’t like what you’re blogging about. You don't have absolute control over your own blog. With Wordpress, you own the domain name and the blog is hosted on your own account. You have full control over your content.

With the self-hosted version of Wordpress (not Wordpress.com), you're free to write about anything you want, and use the software in any way you want. Yes, Blogger allows you to publish to your own domain, but they still own the database that holds your content! Don't forget that!

5) Search Engine Optimization and Traffic

There's this propaganda that since Google owns Blogger, they tend to favor Blogger accounts. I won't say that this is illogical, but from my experience, there's no such favoritism.

I've heard as many stories of getting indexed fast and ranking high in search engines from both Wordpress and Blogger users. As long as the content is good, the spiders will come.

When you post in Blogger, you can only “ping” a limited amount of sites, whereas with Wordpress on your own domain you can ping as many blog directories as you want, and start getting more traffic.
As a conclusion, I would say that Wordpress is only slightly ahead in terms of optimization for search engines, and building large amounts of traffic.

6) Money-Making Potential

There's no doubt that it's easier to get started with Google Adsense if you have a Blogger account. In fact you can now apply for Adsense from within a Blogger account. Not entirely surprising considering the fact that both are owned by the same company.

With Wordpress, it can get tricky. The default installation is not enough. You'll need a couple of plugins and even a better theme to really maximize the Adsense potential. However, this seems to be getting easier and there's even "Adsense revenue sharing" plugins around that allow you to share ad revenue with other contributors and writers for your blog.

When you start using Wordpress to build your Adsense websites, you’ll soon discover what I mean. It’s something you need to experience for yourself. I can tell you one thing though – when you go Wordpress, you don’t go back.

Non tutti seguono le indicazioni SEO, cioè tutta quella serie di regolette , che di per sè sono abbastanza semplici se si conosce un minimo di html, ma che, per chi tiene un blog giusto perchè "lo fanno tutti" è quasi impossibile stargli dietro in quanto occorre una gran passione, un vero interesse per quello che si fà. Di 'script' che aggiungono in fondo ai 'post' le etichette per votare salvare gli articoli nei Social Bookmarks ce ne sono parecchi, ma per la piattaforma Blogger.com non sono tanti, quelli che si occupano dei Social italiani sono pochi e quello che lo fanno in modo da essere SEO-Friendly o che, appunto, seguono le 'regole Seo' sono praticamente assenti. E' questo il bello del Web2.0: da l'opportunità di fare cose ancora inesplorate, anche se sicuramente utili come in questo caso. Ecco allora che, mettendo insieme alcune cose già presenti nel web e aggiungendone altre che seguno i dettami del 'buon Seo' ho fatto questo 'script' che serve ad aggiungere, in fondo ad ogni post di Blogger.com una decina di Social. 3 social stranieri, ma di uso comune anche da noi e (per ora, ma la pagina si aggiornerà man mano che nse ne troveranno in giro di nuovi ) 7 Social italiani tra i più usati , senza che questo appesantisca l'home page del nostro blog, sia a livello di kb che per quello di link in uscita, nè che "l'alleggerisca" di lettori, in quanto da un pò di tempo si nota sempre meno l'implementazione del tag target=_blank" o about=_blank" che di questi tempi sembra non andare più di moda ma che è naturalmente ripreso dallo script . per saperne di più potete andare a fare un 'giro' qua.

:) It was fun! Thought that I wouldn't have the chance to go, since the poeple I originally intended to go with pang se-ed me. :( Never mind...one day...

Only went on two rides though. Not enough money. :p And the entrance fee was courtesy of Mel, and Albert paid for one of the rides. :D Seeing Stef again was great! :D Thanks for the earrings! Too bad we couldn't win the cow or whatever it was. Hehe!

School is...well, school. It's great being back and meeting all my friends. But there're so many things to do. So many projects due and homework to pass up and things to study. And I don't really like where my class is right now, it's too far away. I feel isolated. :p

Ecology project's finally done! :D Goodbye to soil samples, quadrates, line transects and formulas that never work. :)

Hhmmm....I resolve to make the best of my Upper Six time by studying as much as I possibly can. NOT get distracted by senseless crushes. Collect more scrunchies! I only got about 10 15 new ones this entire year! Remember things. Read the Bible. NO compromises. Be nice and mean it. Save money.

I dunno what else lah. My resolutions usually end up in the rubbish bin. So anyway...
