Now what’s interesting to see here is that it’s been three years since Nagesh Kukunoor

Now what's interesting to see here is that it's been three years since Nagesh Kukunoor's Iqbal hit theaters, and it's only today that I realized there are more than one song on the album. Granted, I never bought the album, but this is a classic example of what I call the "Bollywood Hype" You go out there and take a usually mediocre song and push it as hard as you possibly can, ignoring all the other songs composed for the album. Eventually, people will forget that there ever were other songs and only focus on that one. Indians... I love us, don't get me wrong, but very few people will go searching beyond what they hear on Radio Mirchi or India FM. In effect, they usually end up missing half the good songs out there in favor of Mauja hi Mauja and Where's the Party Tonight.

Iqbal is the story of a young deaf- mute boy who dreams of playing cricket for the Indian National Team. Despite his father's skepticism and all the odds against him, he perseveres. A movie about overcoming the odds, Iqbal is centered around one track, in the words of my cousin "the only song in the movie," Aashayein.

Aashayein: Irfan Siddeque's lyrics of hope and perseverence are really the driving force of this song. The beautiful, inspiring poetry never fails to draw in listeners. KK's powerful voice helps further the power behind this song, and keep the pace at a comfortably peppy tempo. Although this piece may not be a crowd favorite the first time around, everyone I know has caught themselves humming along after hearing it a few times! What really hooked me was Irfan Siddeque's lyrics:

"Kuch paane ki ho aas aas, koi aarman ho jo khas khas, aashayein

har khoshish me ho vaar vaar, kare dariyan ko aar paar, aashayein

toofano ko chirke, manzilon ko cheen le,

aashayein khile dil ki, ummidein hase dil ki, ab mushkil nahin kuch bhi, nahin kuch bhi"

One line of this song has become almost like a personal motto for me - "Kuch aisa karke dikha, khud khush ho jaaye khuda"

Aankhon Me Sapna: This track is not present in the movie, but is one of the best on the album. This almost dreamy, soothing number is a pleasant change from much of composer Himesh Reshammiya's more current compositions such as Aashiq Banaya Aapne and Tera Suroor. Singer Ravindra Upadhyaya does justice to the song and proves himself to be a talented and nearly flawless singer.

Mutti Me Hain Aasman: This song's title does not fail to continue the trend of what in the US is known as "sappy inspirational music." The song, however, does not have the same inspirational air as the first two, and reminds me more of a marching song. This is easily something I could see being played at a school parade. A bit more contemporary and filmy in style versus the other two, it does not leave the same lasting impact as the other two tracks do, but is not a complete failure either.

Khelenge Khelenge: Khelenge Khelenge reminds me of Lagaan's Chale Chalo, with a contemporary twist. Used as the background music throughout much of the movie, this piece has the capability to get adrenaline and emotions running if used correctly. What interested me is that this track is not only sung by Sukhwinder Singh, but composed by him as well.

It's a short album, with no unnecessary remixes (YES!!!), but there is most definitely more than one song. Although Aashayein may continue to stick in people's minds as "the song" from Iqbal, the rest aren't too shabby either. I am going to pick up a copy of this album as soon as I get the chance [Indian CD's aren't too easy to come by here!!] and I suggest you do the same, if you don't already have it!

Mallika Sherawat is having a dream hut built for herself at Vizhinjam near Kovalam beach in Kerala. G. Shankar, the chief of Habitat Technology Group, is working on the hut and said that the hut would be ready to move in.

‘Mallika is expected to arrive here in the next few days and give the final approval to complete her home. This is a one hall and one bedroom hut and built with mud and overlooks the majestic Arabian Sea near Vizhinjam. I’m sorry I can’t reveal the exact location. The roof of the hut is yet to be decided and it would be finalised once she is here. Most probably it would be one with bamboo and tiles,’ said Shankar.

Reports indicate that the hut is coming up on a small hill top and one has to reach the place on foot. There is no road for cars. So, Mallika here hopes to find some time alone with herself on the hill top.

They are everywhere now - in the gossips columns, in the endorsements, at the parties, at the reality shows and rocking the concerts at various countries. The Saifeena couple gave such a successful show on August 21 at Sharjah for ‘Jashan 2008‘ in the Middle East that the Morani Brothers, the organizers are now keen on taking the duo to Europe for a series of shows.

Mohammed Morani said,

“The Sharjah show was extremely successful. We are now organizing a series of shows across Europe and the Middle East. Saif and Kareena have a huge fan following in these places. People throng to the stadium to watch them especially after the success of Race and Jab We Met. Also, Saif and Kareenamake a wonderful pair. They are both good looking and exude power that makes the audience go ‘wow’. Saif and Kareena gave solo performances and the results are evident with the success of ‘Jashan 2008′, so we can imagine the response when the duo performs together.”

Kareena said,

“The show had a crowd of 20,000 people and it was just amazing. Saif is in talks with the Morani Brothers for the shows across Europe and the Middle East.”

To be known here that for the Sharjah show, the two did not perform together. But the organizers are hoping to cash in on their popularity and get them to do certain items together. Now, this is a win-win situation for everybody. The organizers get their coffers filled, the couple gets a whopping payment with the bonus of some time out together for romance and the fans get to see their favorite stars in action!

Why this delay? You see, I am never over-enthusiastic about watching any film that stars Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan in it and I also go to great lengths to avoid a film if it is a historical. History was never one of my favourite or strongest subjects in school.

After watching this film, I only wish history was taught and told as beautifully as Jodhaa Akbar (JA) just did. Never on Indian screen have I seen such a beautiful blend of historical fact and fiction. Agreed that JA is only a version of history and perhaps even a distorted one at that, but what isn't distorted? History, like any other reality, has always had multiple versions. Anyway, I don't care a damn about the "fact or fiction" controversies and would not ever waste my energy on debating whether a movie is a historical fact or a fictionalised account, as long as the end result is good. When I need information about something, I read books or go to wikipedia and when I am in need of some entertainment, I go to a movie theatre. As simple as that.

Having watched Jodhaa Akbar, I feel really proud to have been born and brought up in a truly secular country (well for most part(s) it still is - pun intended) like India. I am so glad that this film has been made and one seldom gets to say this given the kind of films that are being out churned out lately. Really, what has Bollywood come to? This may sound a bit blasphemous but I shall say it anyway, I don't quite know how Singh became to be the King , give me a secular and intelligent Akbar any day instead:-) Thank you very much.

Synopsis: When the Mughals were hatching a war-plan against adjoining Rajput kingdoms during the 16th century, King Bharmal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) proposed reconciliation by way of a marriage between Akbar (Hrithik Roshan) and his daughter Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan). This marriage of alliance invited the wrath of other Rajputs and Mughals. However, in this environment a beautiful relationship gradually developed between the spirited Rajput Princess Jodhaa and Jalaluddin Akbar. To quote Raja Sen of rediffmail, this story of a Mughal warrior taking a rajput bride for strategic reasons and then falling helplessly in love with her unbridled spirit, in itself is a winner.

JA essentially is a love story set against the backdrop of Mughal dynasty. It is a story of how a marriage of alliance based on purely strategic and political decisions ultimately got converted into a marriage of love. Above everything, it is a story of a marriage between two religions and two cultures and of the relationship between this married couple which is based on mutual respect and tolerance for each other's cultures and identity. Things like Akbar letting Jodhaa have her own temple space in his palace, him declaring in his court that rajasthani food be served on every feast day may seem pretty juvenile and superficial even but these are precisely the things that form the backbone of their stable relationship and make Jodhaa fall head over heels in love with her husband. Trust me on this, I know every thing there is to know about a cross-cultural, inter-religious and even inter-racial relationship:-)

What about the long length? Majority of Indian films are thirty-to-forty five minutes too long and Jodhaa Akbar is no exception. I can provide you with a list of scenes and a few battle sequences that the movie could've completely done without. That said, I won't hold a grouse about it against this extremely well-made historical and of such epic proportions.

Special Moments: This film is full of special moments but the ones that will stay with me for long are:

Taming of the elephant.

Akbar reinstating his wife Jodhaa's lost pride and honour by eating her jhoota kiya hua khana.

Jodhaa learning Islamic calligraphy as a gesture of acceptance for Akbar's culture.

Akbar opening himself to Jodhaa and sharing something deeply personal with her i.e. about his lack of formal education.

Cast and Performances:

Punam Sinha - Looks very regal and majestic in her part as Shahenshah-E- Maa (Emperor Akbar's mother). Someone please get rid of that irritating Kirron Kher soon. We have found a better-looking and more talented replacement here.

Niketan Dheer - His physical appearance and characteristics help him a lot while playing the evil brother-in-law of Akbar, Sharifuddin. For starters, he looks very convincing especially in the battle field scene. He also does an okay job performance-wise which helps.

Sonu Sood as Sujamal Bhaisa - Is very likeable.

Illa Arun - Is aptly cast as the surrogate mother Maham Anga.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan - The best compliment to her would be that, I completely forgot it was Aishwarya Rai as Jodhaa. Kudos to Ashutosh Gowariker for achieving this. He kept her controlled, gave her bare minimum dialogues to pout...oops, mouth and most importantly, he made her wear artificial contact lenses shades darker than her natural emerald. This is the only role of hers where I haven't wished that a more powerful performer like a Madhuri or a Rani were playing it.

Hrithik Roshan - As the ruthless but conscientious warrior Jalaluddin Akbar. I won't like to make a sweeping statement like Hrithik has given his career's best in JA because I would like to think that his best is yet to come. But this definitely is his career's most restrained performance so far. I must say that he doesn't look very convincing as Jalaluddin. He looks like...well, just Hrithik - what with the coloured streaks in his hair and all. Wither perfectionism, eh? He does however more than make up for this by giving his all to Akbar's role.

Anyway, Jodhaa Akbar is not necessarily a performace-driven film. There are other aspects that give the film its magnificence. For example, Neeta Lulla's couture, which is very well researched. The use of bright Indian colours by her is just breath-taking to watch. Similarly, Nitin Chandrakant Desai's sets are jaw droppingly good and I must add, very detailed. Neeta and Ntin, together, position the film's cultural identity in its right context.

Music: The enchanting hindu bhajan ‘Man Mohana' and the subliminal sufi ‘Khwaja Mere Khwaja', both, are composed by GOD (aka A.R. Rehman) himself as are the rest of the songs. There is just no room left for any more perfection. I must add, the picturisation of the sufi song provided me with an extraordinary spiritual experience of its kind.

Ashutosh Gowariker is a very good director because he is an excellent and sensitive story-teller. I would even say the only one of its kind that Indian Film Industry has today. And when I thought it wasn't possible after the academy award nominated Lagaan, he has done it again.

I am kicking myself now for leaving it so late that I had to watch this film on a 28 inch tele as opposed to a 70 mm screen. Jodhaa Akbar will no doubt be going down as a classic in Indian film history. For now though, I just want this kind of beautiful history to repeat itself! After all, everyone loves a good love story, don't we all?

Directed by Abhishek Kapoor

Every so often, a successful film emerges stealth like at the box office and becomes a sleeper hit. Earlier this year, we had Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na which took everyone by surprise and now Rock On can be added to this list. Ironically, it was when I went to see JTYJN that I came across the trailer for Rock On. To be honest, even though I am open minded when it comes to Hindi cinema, I did have my reservations about this film - rock is an out and out western genre of music, surely a Bollywood film would not be able to do it justice?

My main worry was that rock as a whole would be given the Bollywood makeover, which would make for good entertainment but not necessarily a great film (which we have had quite a lot of this summer!). So on a rainy Saturday evening, I was quite surprised to see the cinema almost half full (though it is a small local cinema) with families, groups of young adults and pleasingly a group of mature adults (who may have had a secret thing for rock - who knows?). Surely a good film should appeal to all generations?

Rock On is the story of a rock band called Magik who dream of making it big but fall out and lose touch with one another. Ten years on, Aditya Shroff (Farhan Akhtar) the lead singer is now an investment banker, unhappily married to Sakshi (Prachi Desai) and his work, Joe (Arjun Rampal) is a failed musician with a ten year old son and a wife Debbie (Shahana Goswami) who has to run the family business to keep a roof over their heads. Then there is KD (Purab Kohli) the drummer who works in his father's jewellery shop and Rob (Luke Kenny) the only person to have stuck to a music career but produces music he does not care about. The story moves forward as Sakshi tries to save her marriage, which results in the band being given a second chance to make it big. But will they take that chance?

Rock On is a technically accomplished film, boasting impressive cinematography and crisp editing which really raises it a notch above other films. In fact, don't be surprised if film inspires a genre of its own. The story is nothing new (and there is more than a whiff of Dil Chahta Hai which was directed by Farhan Akhtar) but this not necessarily a bad thing as the film has quite a novel concept with the backdrop of rock music, (an area which has largely been unexplored in Bollywood) and the story is character driven which is a rare treat in this age of entertainers. Furthermore, the music for the film is amazing, keeping rock in essence but also appealing to non-rock fans too. Shankar Ehsaan Loy who scored the music clearly relished the challenge of composing the music and this has to be amongst their best work. Similarly, kudos goes to Javed Akhtar for soulful lyrics and the OST blends in seamlessly with the film.

Also, mention must be made of the gorgeous interior design and uber cool styling in the film. In this era of the credit crunch, Aditya and Sakshi's house (which is the backdrop for a sizeable part of the film) is pure property porn and at some points, I won't lie, I was distracted by the water feature and corner unit sofa as well as the staircase which seemed to have no base. Yes, i should have been concentrating on the film but when a house looks that good, its just rude not to appreciate it! Similarly, the clothes styling is done very well, appearing effortless and coordinated at the same time. Each character's progression can be seen nicely through their wardrobe - note Aditya's change from lead singer to corporate man to laid back casual or Debbie's trendy vests to simple dresses or Rob's hippy garb turned city chic. Little details like this make all the difference and show how when a good concept is executed well, it can be seen in any part of the film.

In terms of the performances, all the cast do well. Perhaps the most recognisable face will be Arjun Rampal, who at first seems uncomfortable, especially in his younger incarnation but then turns in an intense and measured performance which really is amongst his best - certainly showing more of the depth that we first saw in Moksha. Farhan Akhtar (who is better known as director of Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya and Don, as well as a writer and son of lyricist Javed Akhtar) now adds actor and successful debutante to his list of accomplishments with a suitably cocky performance that really brings the character to life and his transformation from arrogance to mellow is well depicted.

Purab Kohli and Luke Kenny are excellent in their supporting roles, both garnering laughs and sympathy without overdoing it, Prachi Desai gives a subtle performance as the Aditya's wife and though at times she is a little wooden, this can be forgiven as by the end of the film, she too becomes one with her character. Shahana Goswami also turns in a strong performance as Debbie, the stylist who is forced to run her husband's family fish business. Goswami adds a real human touch to the character and makes the audience appreciate her predicament, helped by the script which prevents the character from becoming two dimensional.

A lovely aspect of this film is the audience really come to care for the characters and want to get to know them better which is what gives the film an edge and garners that all important repeat viewing factor. Indeed, this film certainly looks like it will survive the test of time. Furthermore, the film's resolution, though a tad predictable, really packs a punch and ties up the film nicely. Abhishek Kapoor, who wrote and directed the film, has certainly marked himself as a director to watch out for, as appealing to a wide audience on an unconventional subject is quite the risk but in this case, pays off handsomely.

Rock On really is a must see film and reminds me of Chak De! India last year, which grew in popularity thanks to word of mouth (and ok, it had Shah Rukh Khan in the film but it was the fact that CDI was a good film that sustained it in the audience's hearts and at the box office). I didn't expect to really like the film much but the more I think about it, I really loved it and was totally immersed in the second half, always a good sign. I would also recommend this film to anyone who occasionally watches Bollywood or has never seen a Hindi film before - Rock On is one of the best films this year and has that rare ability to engage the heart and mind of the viewer at the same time. Not be missed, and definitely one to be enjoyed in cinema. Go see and rock on!

At the beginning of this movie, Purab’s character reminiscences that “At the age of 20, all of us think the world is going to dance to our tunes”. Something similar to Aamir Khan’s ‘DJ’ in Rang De Basanti. There is something about growing up; it is a sobering process and a reality check. On ourselves and the world around us. With additional responsibilities, come the compromises. The dreams and passions of youth fade away into oblivion, and so do the relationships. Unless you are Joe Mascerenhas, the lead guitarist in this film, who never stopped believing in his passion, while he watched the world speed by in front of his eyes.

Unlike what the promos and theme might suggest, Rock On is actually mature cinema. The prime hazard in making such a movie in Hindi cinema is that it eventually ends up being a wannabe. A case in point is the last film on rock, (Zindagi Rocks), where the lead protagonist did not even know how to hold the instrument properly. That’s where this film truly Rocks! Where the music is a way of life for the players, rather than an embellishment.

So we have a talented bunch of friends, Adi (Farhan), Joe (Arjun Rampal), Rob (Luke Kenny) and KD (Purab Kohli), who have a rock band called Magik. This foursome complements each other perfectly, and set the stage on fire in all their local performances. Obviously, they want the big break and therefore enter a competition where the winners get to cut a private album with a music video. Though they win this competition, the guys realize that all is not as rosy as it seems. The compromises start and the relationships go sour. 10 years later, each is carrying on with their own lives until Adi’s wife, Sakshi (Prachi) chances upon some old pictures of the group. Feeling that it might refresh his morose existence, she seeks to reunite the group. After a lot of hiccups, the band gets together to rekindle an old friendship with the same ‘Magik’.

This is Abhishek ‘Gattu’ Kapoor’s second round after the abysmal ‘Aryan’. I would not even go into a comparison between the two, as I am not sure how many saw his first movie, but his name would be heard a lot in times to come. The narrative is similar to DCH, involving plenty of flashbacks and fast forwards. The music had to be special for such a theme, and sure enough the songs lend lot of dimension to the screenplay. Teemed with the easygoing lyrics and Farhan’s coarse voice, it sounds like a typical college rock band. Farhan himself, gives a convincing performance, and looks the part as well. Purab and Luke lend plenty of support with heartwarming lines, as do the ladies who play a perfect foil to their husbands. But it is Arjun Rampal (yes, you read it correct!) in an understated but strong portrayal of the guitarist, who leaves behind an impression even after the movie.

‘Live your dream’ is what the tagline says. Many people do not have the courage, luck or drive to do that. Yet somewhere deep down, most of us are like Joe, wanting that chance to prove what we can really be…

Balaji Motion Pictures the producers of C Kkompany promise to entertain with the comedy featuring Tusshar Kapoor, Raima Sen, Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav and Mithun Chakraborty. Sanjay Dutt has a small role; Celina Jaitley has an item number. There are also a host of television actors in special appearances.

Akshay Kumar (Tusshar Kapoor) is a crime reporter, Ramakanth Joshi (Anupam Kher) is a retired accountant trying to deal with his ungrateful son and Lambodar (Rajpal Yadav) are friends. These three share their respective plight with one another and find solace in each other's company. On one occasion, they play a harmless prank to tackle their problems. One thing leads to another, and before they realize, the incident becomes news.

But things don't stop there. They put their new founded fame to good use, and this in turn triggers off a series of incidents, which propel them to such heights that the three become the talk of the nation. Things get beyond their control, and the three are left with no choice but to be mute spectators to their newly acquired fame, especially since no one knows their identity.

Was Ekta Kapoor trying to promote her television soaps through C Kkompany? Quite a few renowned television actors from her serials make an appearance. The movie takes several digs at her K serials and what's more Ekta Kapoor herself makes an appearance. We have an underworld don (Mithunda) who gets all emotional and sheds a bucket of tears while watching Ekta's tele-soaps.

There are spoofs on almost everything. Amitabh Bachchan and his Kaun Banega Crorepati, under world, Karan Johar, Talk shows... the list is endless. Unfortunately though, nothing is funny or entertaining. The dialogues are some of the worst I have heard in recent times. The lesser said about the music, the better.

The only positive about C Kkompany is the performances by a few actors and no prizes for guessing who. Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav and Mithuna stand out but you can't expect them to rise above the below average script. Tusshar Kapoor is poor, as expected. His mannerisms just don't work anymore. It's really high time he quits acting and gets into production.

Raima Sen is wasted. Although she looks beautiful and those super expressive eyes are enough to make you fall in love with her.

To sum up, C Kkompany is poor in every department; except for decent performances by the veterans, NOTHING is worth a mention.

The biggest strength of this gritty espionage thriller is also its primary weakness. So real and ble

The biggest strength of this gritty espionage thriller is also its primary weakness. So real and bleak is the world of espionage created by writer-director Mani Shankar, that you wonder if the sheer sexiness of being a spy that we saw Dharmendra and Tom Cruise experience in "Aankhen" and "Mission Impossible" was a cinematic hoax created to hoodwink us into believing in the heroic hi-jinks of people who risk their lives for the sake of national security.

"Mukhbiir" creates a universe of continual searching and annihilation, where heroes are made and unmade with the passage of one bullet from gun to temple, and god help the temple.

The young protagonist Kailash (Sammir Dattani) is young, vulnerable and so brutally thrown from one ruthless organisation to another (legitimate or otherwise) that at the end of his anguished journey in search of a self-identity, we want him to be liberated of the pain that seems to be his only constant companion.

The characters come and go in episodic eruptions. Silence is Kailash's final ally.

What "Mukhbiir" does to the spy genre is to turn it inside out. We aren't looking at James Bond's stirred-and-sexy world of the spy who loved the good life.

"Mukhbiir" takes us into the murkiest depths of the espionage business where survival isn't a craving. It's a fugitive option offered to a few lucky ones.

Luckily, for the gripping and gritty script, the protagonist is a boy-man constantly thrown into situations of severe uncertainty and terror. The tension never slackens.

The reluctant young spy survives by sheer instinct and guts. The screen time is segregated into various episodes from Kailash's life as a government informer in action.

The shoot-outs, somewhat amateurish in their chaotic eruptions, do not define the protagonist's life as much the human contact.

Every encounter written for Sammir's character creates a new level of existential summit in his doomed life until we come to the finale where on Kailash's life (and death) hinges the survival of a city.

The director fills up the awkward ill-defined spaces in the narrative with pockets of humour and bridled drama all signifying the dynamics of an individual life's relationship with a troubled and violent society.

The final dialogue on Islam and violence between Rahul Dev lingers after the film.

Mani Shankar's storytelling is highly original. There're no false moments in the discursive yet clenched drama of dissociation where Kailash becomes so distanced from his original identity that he eventually forgets who he is.

The powerful script lets us know there is no mercy for the weak in this grim and unsettled world of espionage and extremism. The two fatally-compatible worlds meet in strange eerie places where Kailash's masquerade as a man removed from his natural roots is so complete you wonder if he can ever go back to a 'normal' life.

Immense warmth and empathy are created in Kailash's interactions with people like his mentor Om Puri who first tutors Kailash into being a mean machine and then lets the poor boy loose in a world where death is the only certainty.

Alok Nath, Suniel Shetty, Raj Zutshi and Sushant Singh play various other characters, who come in and out of Kailash's life, with wonderful warmth or wickedness.

There's also a bit of diverting romance in Kailash's life when the pretty Raima Sen shows up for a while and departs, leaving the desolate protagonist to his own devices.

But it's the mentor-turned-tormentor Om Puri's relationship with the boy-man-misinformed-informer that holds the plot together providing it with a sensitive centre.

The sequence where the Mukhbiir must watch his mentor being tortured and then kill him with his own hands without giving the game away is devastating in its intensity and impact.

Mani Shankar's narration provides the hero's journey from disembodied salvation to abject doom and near-damnation with an energetic reined-in adrenaline that flows across the narrative's veins in restrained motions.

What you go away with is the protagonist's pain heartbreak vulnerability and an untraceable reserve of inner strength that he uses to survive in a constantly treacherous world.

The doom and the doomed eventually merge into one in "Mukhbiir".

25 years ago Dharmendra started his own production house and named it Vijeta Films. And with the release of Chamku in 2008, the banner celebrates its Silver Jubilee. Chamku stars Bobby Deol and Priyanka Chopra. The supporting cast include Irrfan Khan, Danny Denzongpa , Ritesh Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav, Arya Babbar. The movie is directed by Kabeer Kaushik who last directed Sehar (Arshad Warsi, Mahima Chaudary) in 2005.

The movie is based on a true story of a Naxalite from the southern interiors of Bihar. It depicts the way the system abuses innocent human lives. Chamku son of a farmer is rescued by a group of Naxalities although his parents are killed by a evil Thakur. Chamku grows with the Naxalities, learns to kill and make a living in the deep forests of southern Bihar.

One fateful day the Naxal's are captured by the police, Chamku and his colleagues are captured. Chamku survives although his colleagues are killed in encounters. Kapoor (Irrfan Khan) hires him to kill criminals and terrorists. What follows is a series of assassinations staged by the state ministry.

But what is a Hindi movie without a love story? Shubhi (Priyanka Chopra) a schoolteacher enters Chamku's life. They fall in love with each other, although Shubhi doesn't know anything about him. What turn does Chamku's life take is what forms the rest of the movie titled 'Chamku'
The story gives you an idea that the movie is one of those 'out dated' storylines. Wherein the hero takes on the entire system and emerges as the winner. The movie starts off very intensely but soon fizzes out. Its gets very predictable and you tend to know just exactly what could happen in the next scene. It's one of those seen-a-hundred-times-before in the 90s movie.

A little more on the life of a Naxal like Chamku's childhood and his growing days would have been interesting rather than the quite predictable learns to use the gun stuff. We all know that someone who grows with the Naxal's is bound to end up learning how to fire and live in the forest, don't we?

The Bobby Deol - Priyanka Chopra love story too was unnecessary, but a Hindi movie needs a love angle plus it also attracts the audience to the theatre, doesn't it?
The music by Monty Sharma is decent, a few songs are melodious.

Bobby Deol with a stubble, bears no more than 4 expressions throughout. Although it is one of his better performances in recent times. Priyanka Chopra.. hmm what's she doing in the movie? No scope to perform, she looks good. Danny Denzongpa is great. Ritesh Deskmukh doesn't suit the role he portrays. Irrfan Khan is fantastic.

Overall, Chamku is watchable ones if you don't mind watching those typical Bollywood Stories that have been told a million times before. Nothing unique or different to look forward to. Watch it on DVD if you must.

I confess I am not a rock music aficionado. And I guess I am too young and with too little experience to completely identify with the theme of dreams and aspirations crushed by the cruelty of fate and life. I am perhaps still building my dreams, and maybe that's why I didn't respond as emotionally to Rock On as many others have.

For Rock On is really not so much about music, as it is about following your passion and living your dreams. It is about the regret, disappointment and frustration that inevitably haunt a life fueled by compromise, but as rocker-turned-investment-banker Aditya Shroff (Farhan Akhtar) says in the film- 'Compromise kaun nahi karta?'

The first half of Rock On is too glum for its own good, and having established Aditya and Co. as tortured, unhappy souls, one wishes that the screenplay writers Abhishek Kapoor and Pubali Choudhary spent more time and energy establishing the friendship and camaraderie among the band, and their past journey till when they fall apart. The fun, madness and humour are almost completely missing, and that's where Rock On fails to do a Dil Chahta Hai.

The male bonding just doesn't come across strongly enough, and the film turns soggy, even boring- I mean come on, the rock band in this movie is so unbelievably scrubbed clean, it is not funny- and in that context it is only perhaps fitting that they sing songs with embarrassingly nursery rhyme lyrics that go- 'Aasmaan hai neela kyon, Paani geela geela kyon, Gol kyon hai zameen' and have a name like Magik.

So while there are two instances of some cool great tongue-in-cheek humour- including that hilarious scene where the band is forced to do a dandiya gig to raise money, and another one that takes a dig at the corny and poisonous-sounding lyrics that feature in songs by young rock bands- the film struggles to find its feet and rhythm, uncomfortably shuttling between past and present.

That said, the second half, while equally predictable works way better than the first, and it's really a pity because provided a more solid foundation earlier, it could have worked wonders. The feeling of reminiscence and nostalgia doesn't quite reach our nostrils in the latter part of the film simply because the film doesn't give us enough to reminisce about in the former. Still, some clichés (and-spoiler alert- an unforgivably soppy and unnecessary brain tumour angle) apart, the nicely understated humour, emotional moments and most importantly, the performances keep you hooked on till the neatly drawn and fairly rousing end.

Farhan Akhtar may not exactly be a great singer (and while he doesn't sound awful, I do hope he restricts any future singing to the shower), he impresses with a confident and mature debut performance. Prachi Desai also scores in her big-screen debut, and she is delicate and vulnerable without turning into saccharine. Arjun Rampal (looking every inch a rock star) and Luke Kenny are nicely restrained, while Purab Kohli is his usual endearing and affable self, adding that dose of cheer when the film needs it the most. But the standout here is clearly Shahana Goswami, who despite having a brief role manages to more than make her presence felt, every glance of hers effectively portraying the pain and angst of a woman who sacrifices her own dreams for her family's sake, forced to be harshly pragmatic, take charge and wear the pants in the house as her husband (Rampal) struggles with his failed idealism.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music while decent could have been way better, and the love ballads work way better than the other tracks which lack that quality to lift us off our feet. What really deserves applause is Jason West's superb photography that is as stylish and textured as it is beautifully evocative.

Rock On is a lovely, almost fable-like story that uses music as a metaphor for life and all we hold dear in it, and would probably be loved by many viewers for various personal reasons- and I can completely understand why- because when a film's story touches that chord deep within, the heart takes over the head and the film transcends its cinematic artifice.

For someone like me, however- Rock On is, after all, another movie and there is no denying that the cinematic potential contained within the story is far from exploited to its fullest. Rock On takes way too long to take off, and when it finally does, the sheer adrenalin rush we deserved from this film is missing, and hence, while Abhishek Kapoor's second film is a laudable effort which often surprises you with its subtle layering, it does fall short, and that makes me feel sad- for this could truly have been Magik.

A fable like fragility runs through Santosh Sivan’s latest film. An exquisitely shot, wonderfu

A fable like fragility runs through Santosh Sivan's latest film. An exquisitely shot, wonderfully performed work of art set at a lyrical low-octave mellow pitch where you can actually smell the spices from a slow-burning chulha as they cook up an ambrosial aroma that permeates the greenest valley on this side of Frank Capra.

Like Capra, Sivan believes in the inherent goodness of the soul in his characters. There are no bad guys in "Tahaan", not even the militants whose guns boom intermittently in the poetic tranquility of Sivan's Kashmir as little Tahaan (debutant Purav Bhandare) uses all his innocent skills to hold on to his best friend in the world - a donkey.

The strange, stirring and indelible bond between child and nature, and between the child of nature as well as the extraneous circumstances that define the human condition have always fascinated Sivan - both as a director and a cinematographer.

In his directorial debut "Terrorist", a young girl (Ayesha Dharker) journeyed from environmental incorruptibility to human-bomb status without forfeiting the fluency of her innate nature.

In "Tahaan", the delightfully natural boy comes close to being a human bomb. In a heartbreaking twist to the tale, little Tahaan makes friends with a callow militant(Ankush Dubey) who promises to bring back the child's darling donkey Birbal in exchange for unknowing acts of terrorism performed by the unsuspecting boy.

The militancy of Sivan's Kashmir is so gently portrayed, you wonder if such cinematic faith in human nature is a sign of wisdom or the prognosis for creative naivete. The army men smile and shower affections on our little hero, the militants introduce him to the bomb as though it was part of his playschool curriculum.

All is well in paradise as long as the poetry of the human heart flows in sharp rhythms. That is precisely what Sivan does. He captures the elegiac ethos of a civilisation that has seen its best in the past but nevertheless clings innocently to the hope of a better future.

This is the innocent, uncorrupted territory that Satyajit Ray travelled with little Apu 50 years ago and most recently Ishaan in "Taare Zameen Par". Tahaan's journey is far more metaphorical.

A limpid lyricism runs through the picaresque plot as Tahaan encounters various men - from his wise and wacky grandfather (Victor Bannerjee) and a good-hearted cranky sage (Anupam Kher) to a dimwitted womanizer (Rahul Bose) and a practical businessman (Rahul Khanna).

These people crowd our impressionable hero's consciousness, creating a kaleidoscope of quirky adventures.

In the way that Sivan handles the child actors - not just the delightful Purav but also Dheirya Sonecha who plays Kher's lonely grandchild - the director seems to have discovered Iranian cinema before Iran discovered it.

Tahaan's experiences convey the magic of poetic but basic revelations on life as layer after layer, the bitter-sweet nuances of the quirky experiences at the lowest level of existence comes flickering to life.

"Tahaan" functions at its own pace. There's no effort to hasten or motivate the narration to any pitch for effect. The plot moves at its own rhythm. The sights and sounds of the valley are captured with the casual grace of a poet who has spent too much time in the lap of beauty to be shaken by the disturbances that have suddenly cropped up in arcadia.

The best performance comes from Sivan's camera. It captures the essential incorruptibility of Kashmir without plunging the pilgrimage into the pristine into over-sentimentalisation. The performances flow out of the plot and not vice versa. The actors underwhelm the narration, nurturing the tender tale with their supple and subtle expressions of artless candour in a world of roses that guns have sneaked into.

It would be criminal to single one out of the many brilliant 'non-performances' (no one acts, they just react to the serene poetry of their surroundings). But Sarika's muted despair as she goes from abandoned wife to harried but indulgent mother remains with us long after the last flicker of this fragile but strong film peters off.

"Tahaan" is not your big, booming, terrorist entertainer like "A Wednesday". Nor is it your carefully crafted, sensitively pitched treatise on terrorism like "Mumbai Meri Jaan". Its appeal is far more profound and intangible. The fable is a playground for Sivan's tenderest thoughts on the nature and quality of the human touch.

Ad Film maker Kunal Shivdasani chose to make his directorial debut in a genre that is presently less

Ad Film maker Kunal Shivdasani chose to make his directorial debut in a genre that is presently less seen in the Bollywood movies with senseless comedy flicks taking over the stage. Hijack, an action thriller directed by Kunal stars Shiney Ahuja, Esha Deol and Kaveri Jha in the lead. So does this fully fledged action film succeed in appealing to the masses?

Before we go any further, here's the story in brief:
Hijack is an action thriller that revolves around Vikram Madan (Shiney Ahuja), a ground maintenance officer at the Chandigarh airport. His social life is limited to one friend, Rajeev, who is the Security Chief of the same airport. As luck would have it, the flight in which Vikram's daughter was traveling to Amritsar from Delhi, is hijacked in demand of the release of Maqsood (KK Raina) a terrorists.

Vikram sneaks into the aircraft with the help of the airhostess, Saira (Esha Deol), to save his daughter Priya and others. He starts plotting and killing the terrorists one by one and in this attempt innocent passengers too become victims of the gunshots by ruthless terrorists in the process. How Vikram and Saira manage to save the plane and the passengers forms the story.

Kunal Shivdasani has the talent and the skill but needs to be a little coherent in his subjective decisions. Although the choice of genre is rare for a debutant director, the flaw in the writing lets him down. One man cracks the entire hijack plan and the hijackers remain unaware of their men missing, is something very unlikely and hard to accept. But to keep the verity (fact or reality) essence of the movie alive, the movie from time to time shows the hero's efficient and planned approach to the entire situation. Also just another potboiler kind of ending kills the fervor.

Superficially, Kunal succeeds as a story teller with an equal mix of reality and fancifulness. The first half of the movie is slightly slow paced and meanders unnecessarily around the plot with scenes and songs that are not required. But the pace quickens in the second half suiting the air of the genre. Music by Justin-Uday is average and a romantic song in an action thriller seems completely out of proportion. But the background score is topnotch. Allan Amin's stunts are first class.

Shiney Ahuja fits into the skin of the character easily and put across a wonderful performance. He is the soul of the movie and manages to carry the movie. But his look is inconsistent and completely messed up throughout the movie.

Esha Deol's role is restricted and doesn't require any acting talent. Supporting actors are good in their respective roles.

Overall, Hijack has a slow take off but a swift landing. It takes you on a decent ride and even manages to entertain in parts. The movie definitely is not up to international standards but good enough to appeal to the Indian audience.

Music Director: Pritam

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil

After making his name in Dhoom, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Kya Love Story Hai, Aawarapan and Life... In a Metro, music director Pritam is back with a bang in Jab We Met. With hit songs like "Mauja hi Mauja" and "Nagada Nagada" this album secured itself a spot on the charts immediately following release. Perhaps what makes this album unique from all the others is it's variety- for those who enjoy foot- tapping beats and peppy numbers, Nagada Nagada, Yeh Ishq Hai, and Mauja Hi Mauja provide ample opportunity to hit the dance floor. Those who enjoy softer, more soothing music, can feast on the tunes Aaoge Jab Tum, Tum Se Hi, and Aao Milo Chalo. This is definitely an album to keep in your music collection!!!

Mauja Hi Mauja: From the first beat, this is a chartbuster number that will have everyone tapping along to the beat. With a balance between western and punjabi (bhangra) influences, this piece creates an atmosphere that is applicable at a dance party, or a wedding celebration. Mika's voice adds to the traditional flavor that keeps this piece from being overwhelming to the listener. The "Masala" version of this piece adds a little more of a punjabi flair to the track, and the remix keeps an air of excitement in the album from beginning to end. In all honesty, although this was the chart topper of the movie (and perhaps the tune that will make Mika's name), this was my least favorite track of the album. I felt like it was a little stale by the second or third time you heard it- it becomes repetitive very quickly. But no one can deny that it is a fun song to dance to!

Tum Se Hi: Possibly the most popular song of the album, Tum Se Hi is a beautiful piece sung by Mohit Chauhan. This is the first time in the album that Irshad Kamil has had to prove his skills at songwriting, and I think that he has succeeded. Mohit Chauhan's silken voice creates a "journey" feeling in this song- when you reach the end of the track you feel like you have arrived somewhere other than where you were at the beginning. The arrangement, vocalization, and instrumentation of this piece only accent the beautiful composition, making it a perfect piece for relaxation or a long car ride. If you liked Pritam's work in Life... In a Metro then this is one track not to miss! The remix version does not ruin the song, surprisingly, but adds a spark to it, leaving it up to the listener to decide which they prefer.

Yeh Ishq Haaye: This song has quickly become a favorite among young female singers out there! While watching a telecast of Zee TV's SaReGaMaPa 2008 USA auditions, I was rather amused to see that almost every second contender sang this song. The judge seemed rather tired of it by the end.... But for those of us who do not have to listen to this song 10 thousand times in a day, it is a pleasant, peppy number that preserves a level of simplicity while still engaging audiences. Shreya Ghoshal's melodious voice creates an atmosphere of fun with this peppy tune. The beat of this song leaves the listener remembering Pritam's own Mahiya from Aawarapan, this time with a folk twist to it.

Nagada Nagada: Next comes another number that just makes you want to get up and dance. Nagada doesn't have a second of empty space in it's entire 4 minutes. Sonu Nigam's powerful voice leaves the listener breathless as he tells the story the song is based on without taking a breath. [Random fact: the version of the song in the movie is sung primarily by Mika, with a bit of Sonu. The song in the album is sung by Sonu with a little bit of Mika]

Aao Milo Chalo: This song leaves the listener remembering In Dino from Life... In a Metro. The song is almost dripping with innocence, and Shaan's voice only intensifies that feeling. An ear- pleasing number, this is a good song for a long car ride, or to be played in the background. Ustad Sultan Khan pays a "surprise visit" with an unexpected alaap that adds a bit of an Indian flair to the piece.

Aaoge Jab Tum: Aahh... my personal favorite. Composed by guest composer Shandesh Shandiliya, who has given the industry songs such as Suraj Hua Madham from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum, and the tracks from Socha Na Tha, this is the most soothing number of the album. Sung by Ustad Rashid Khan, Aaoge Jab Tum preserves a sense of innocence and simplicity. His voice has a folkish touch that works well with the song. The powerful alaaps and the beautiful harkaats keep this piece feeling more traditional Indian classical than the rest. The way he ends his lines, almost as if he's too lazy to finish singing them, creates an atmosphere of longing reflected by Irshad Kamil's beautiful poetry.

On the whole, Jab we Met is a must have album that ties together east and west, classical and modern, to create a sound that is pleasing to almost all ears.
