Shag, was the first thing i thought of day 1.

We both din catch a wink on previous night, and no, not because we were too excited.

Him rushing assignment, me in that flying container.

I'm probably one of the last people on Earth who hasn't seen "Cast Away" -- as evidenced by several office conversations I had about the film yesterday. Even though my dad tells me he likes it and never called it "boring," I could have sworn we had that conversation years ago -- and stayed away from the movie after that.

Despite my apprehension, I love Tom Hanks -- and couldn't change the channel once I'd started the film. The movie is awesome. It rattled me, for sure, but I guess in a good way. Late at night on my sofa with my junk food and dim lighting, I was totally sucked into this world where Chuck Noland -- a FedEx executive who winds up taking a seriously ill-fated flight and winds up on an incredibly remote Pacific island without any foreseeable hope of getting home -- manages to survive for four years by drinking coconut milk, figuring out how to catch wild fish and developing a unique, sustaining friendship with a volleyball. I didn't have any real intention of staying up to watch the entire thing, but once I started going on this terrifying journey with Chuck, I had to see it through to the end.

Would I survive after a plane crash sends me sailing out into the deep, wide, remote and dark Pacific Ocean? Considering I don't know how to swim, I'm going to say I would probably be in serious trouble. Also, I'm afraid to death of crawling things like snakes, spiders, etc., and would probably have a heart attack from the stress of the sounds such crawling things make at night, my overall abandonment and later seeing the bodies of my fellow travelers eventually wash up on shore.

Chuck doesn't let any of that break him, though. He has his pocket watch, a gift from his girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt), with her picture inside. And miraculously, tons of FedEx packages begin to wash up on shore, each of them holding random items like ice skates and video tapes that Chuck is able to use as some element of his survival. And when he's ultimately ready to try and make a break for it, leaving the relative "safety" of the island for the open water in the hope of being found, a piece of metal (a bathroom door?) finds its way up to the shore. He fashions it as a sail and leaves with Wilson, where he's finally found by a passing New Zealand ship.

All of these random items come together on his beach to help him, to guide him in his quest to get back home. Chuck never gave up hope, he says at the end of the film, because "who knows what the tide could bring?"

Pretty hopeful -- and pretty amazing. And despite everything, the movie ends on a high note. Loved it.

People justify evil in the afterlife through modern religion. What they fail to realize is that evil is nessicary to challenge good so that good may become better than it used to be. I dont believe in a global rapture so to speak, only a personal rapture for each individual soul as it leaves its flesh blood and bone for some higher contiusness.

Anyway, im getting off track. Gluttony produces nothing but lazyness. I have fallen pray to such things. I believe i have learned my peak form life on the street (at least within the luxuary of a car) and i am getting lazy. I need some motivation. I need the Berkley Library to clasp me in its beautiful stone hands, and keep me till I read all there is inside, and then kick me out to walk the streets of central California as a post modern hippie, absorbing all the knoladge there is in the vibrant streets filled with beggars, gutter punks, and a dying breed of the 60's selling tattered with love books waiting like new born puppies behind glass windows wagging their tails waiting for someone new to love them as thhey once were loved by their mothers. 

I need to cast myself away on a ship, with a pile of books, with no internet access, so that i may be forced to read real pages, rather than my updated status list on facebook. 

I need Ani DeFranco, and my friend Ellen in the same room as me to witness starstruck between a pupil and a master, and realize both can learn form each other. 

I need to stop filling my life with senseless romance, and walk the line of self preservation.

On May 24,1883, New Yorkers celebrated the completion of the suspension bridge. This engineering feat, however, was not accompolished without sacrifice. To lay the bridge's giant foundations in the water, huge watertight chambers called "caisssons" had to be used. Men would work in them for 8 hours while under tremendous air pressure.

Returning to normal atmospheric pressure resulted in terrible symptoms later know as caisson disease. It was discovered that a rapid decrease in air pressure releases tiny nitrogen bubbles in the bloood. This cuts off the oxygen supply, resulting in nausea, achy joints, paralysis, and even death. Today, scientists kno that the use of a decompression chamber allow a gradual reduction of pressure, which prevents the nitrogen bubbles from forming.

Similarly, we need a place to reduce the pressures of life. God has provided a way to "spiritually decompress." A personal devotional time can be a place where burdens are lifted (Mark 1:35-39). There we can cast all our care upon Him(1 Peter 5:7). By focusing on God's sufficiency we can experience His peace(Isa. 26:3F). Do you have a place of spiritual decompression??-Dennis Fisher.

Semana 31:

October sky (1999) (7.0) es una de esas películas que pasó en su momento por debajo del radar y debía y merecía haber encontrado una audiencia. Ejecuta uno de mis golpes favoritos: toma un material esencialmente lleno de clichés repetidos hasta la saciedad, y le inyecta vida, honestidad emocional y veracidad. Es tu clásica historia del sueño americano, y raramente se ha hecho tan bien en los últimos veinte años. Mérito para el director y los intérpretes. --- Volví a ver Doctor Zhivago (1965) (8.0). Como lo dije antes, es extrañamente invitadora. Una vez empiezas no puedes dejar de verla. Y que conste que quería. --- Eastern promises (2007) (7.0) es, dramáticamente, la película mejor ejecutada de su director, que adopta aquí un estilo más tradicional, sin abandonar su usual preocupación por el cuerpo humano y cómo éste se ve modificado/amputado por la tecnología y por las escogencias morales del hombre moderno (messier Cronenberg debe amar a McLuhan). Un arrebato de elocuencia y transparencia nos brinda aquí uno de los momentos más memorables de su filmografía, y también de la historia de las peleas cinematográficas a cuchillo: la gran pelea a muerte en el sauna. --- La circunspección, profundidad y simpleza de Ingmar Bergman como filósofo, y su limpieza como cineasta están en su mejor punto en Smultronstället ("Fresas salvajes", 1957) (8.5). Por la perfección de su puesta en escena -¿y he mecionado la simpleza?-, esta es una de esas películas que servirá para visiones compulsivas. Bergman es el mejor antídoto para quienes relacionan -confunden- lo complejo con lo complicado. O lo profundo con lo largo... --- El hecho de que Match point (2005) (6.5) sea la mejor película de su director en mucho tiempo, y sea al mismo tiempo un remake de una subtrama resuelta con mayor eficiencia y elocuencia en "Crimes and misdemeanors", nos habla del bajón artístico que experimenta la obra de Allen. Apreciable en todo caso que el buen material escrito por Allen es dirigido con adecuidad, y puntuales momentos de inspiración. Particularmente efectivo fue el material musical escogido para acompañar el drama. --- Tal parece que el director y los guionistas debieron haber esperado a resolver mejor todo lo que no tenía que ver con las escenas del naufragio en Cast away (2000) (6.0). Para nuestra suerte, los envueltos en la producción sabían lo que hacían cuando idearon hacer una película acerca de un hombre de negocios que queda varado en una isla inhabitada y debe sobrevivir por sus propios medios, sopesando la posibilidad de un escape a mar, confiando que tenían justamente al actor que podía llevar sobre sus hombros toda la empresa. Durante el naufragio, es ciertamente esta película distinguida y memorable, igual que lo es la interpretación de Tom Hanks. Alas, los realizadores sintieron la necesidad de justificar la afortunada resolución del asunto, y no supieron cómo hacerlo, así que rellenaron los últimos rollos de la película con zacarina y pretenciosidad. Con resultados dolorosos.
