***Having an authentic ham and cheese crepe on the Champs Elysees at 1am with a handful of special people that just happened to be in Paris at the same time, then hanging out at an underground club acting silly.

***Seeing cool landmarks like The Eiffel Tower, The Louve, The Notre Dame Cathedral, The Siene River and The Arc de Triumph.

***Waking up in France, having lunch in Monaco, and going to sleep in Italy.

***Searching for the perfect thin crust pizza in Italy.

***Partying like a rock star in St. Tropez on the 4th of July and learning the difference between a Magnum(2 bottles), Double Magnum(4 bottles), and Jeroboam(6 bottles).

***Relaxing in the quiet little seaside town of Portofino at the hillside Splendido Hotel, where the view is amazing and the have the best spaghetti I have ever tasted.

***Walking/Hiking 8 miles through Cinque Terre (5 lands), a small group of 5 small fishing villages on the coastline in a National Park.

***Exploring all the nooks and crannies of Venice, Italy and wondering aimlessly through the cobble stone streets. Having drinks at The Gritti Palace, visiting one of the most famous squares in the world ( Piazza San Marco), and shopping in Rodeo-like shops of Chanel and Prada.

***Feeling like a Princess and taking advantage of all the amenities at The Principe Di Savoia in Milan, Italy. The hotel is one of the oldest and most recognized hotels in the city.

I have recently found and fell in love with the Arenberg Cinema in Brussels. Last week I had the opportunity to watch Calle Santa Fe, an excellent Chilean documentary about the MIR (movimiento de izquiera revolucionario) and how it managed to survive the dictatorship of Pinochet after Allende just to be pronounced as dead and dissolved a few time afterwards.

This week it was Darjeeling's Limited turn. This film continues the same line and style of the Royal Tenenbaums (they even share actors). The soundtrack of the film is excellent. I specially enjoyed the Hotel Chevalier short film in the beginning with the "Where do you go to" song which was continually repeated throught the Darjeeling film. The "Aux Champs Elysees" at the end of the film drew an enormous smile on my face, and I can assure you it is still there today. The story is simple and the scenery in India is presented with no prentetious purpose. The photography is excellent and thanks to its mix with music it delivers its message sharp and clear. The story line turns somewhat boring at the end but the movie is conveniently ended on time.

To recommend: the soundtrack, specially "Aux Champs Elysees" and "Where do you go to."

What I didn't like: the story ending. It turns out too slow and lost my interest.

Like the 4th, Quatorze Juillet is marked by a fireworks display near the Eiffel Tower. Not nearly as impressive as the parade, but then again, I've seen fireworks before. I can't say the same for military parades.

But what is truly impressive are the Bastille Day sales. And I scored big with a gorgeous Just Cavalli leather and fur jacket. Yes, fur is terribly un-PC, but I get very cold, very easily and fur is about the only thing that keeps me warm. This jacket blows all my vintage furs out of the water:

So I got the coat at this little "destockage" shop, which means that they have a lot of designer stuff, usually from a few seasons ago, at great prices. They're more likely to negotiate prices with you, too. I got the jacket at 40% off, though it's still one of the most expensive pieces of clothing I currently own--yikes! I figure, though, that I'll wear it all the time, so I'm justifying the price tag. It's so rock and roll. And 40% off! (I realize it's July... what better time to go fur-shopping?)

Anyway, the store is located online as well and run by two cool (and very nice) young Asians, a guy and a girl. He's Gerard, but I didn't catch her name. The site is called Fashion Tribu and they'll ship internationally for 20-some euros. So check it out.

Tomorrow, I'm going to post my new favorite recipe. A real Italian spaghetti sauce that a real Italian girl taught me. I made it over the weekend (albeit for Frenchies) and it was a big hit!

When you’re young, and even when you grow older, you love Bastille Day because it means that your parents don’t work and festivities are held all over France! The biggest celebration is the military parade on the Champs Elysees, the main and well-known avenue of Paris which stretches from l’Arc de Triomphe to la Place de la Concorde. The parade can be seen on every national TV channel.

There are also many festivities in small towns such as fireworks, balls and concerts. This day is very important because it demonstrates the French people’s dedication to their country and a renewed understanding of what their ancestors went through. Although Bastille Day is a French holiday, celebrations happen all over the world. In 2006, I was in the United States and I went to “Le Bal du 14 juillet” organized by the Committee of French Speaking Societies in New-York. It was a very French experience in a very American city. We drank good champagne and an orchestra was playing ‘La Vie en Rose’.

Wherever you are, whatever you do, Bastille Day should be celebrated as a symbol of freedom and revival.

Azi,14 iulie,vorbim despre Ziua Frantei,o tara de care ne leaga multe si cu care avem relatii destul de bune.Se implinesc 219 ani de la caderea inchisorii Bastilia in cadrul Revolutiei Franceze.Abia astept sa vad traditionala parada de pe Champs-Elysees care se anunta si de data asta un spectacol.

Sa ne amintim deci ca "On parle Francais" si sa ne bucuram la ceas de sarbatoare de o prospatura a muzicii frantuzesti:Alizee.

Il y a dix jours, je vous faisais ce billet tout chaud des Etats Unis, sur leur fête nationale, qu'ils appellent "Independance day". Dix jours plus tard c'est notre tour, avec notre 14 juillet qu'ils appellent "Bastille day".

Je sais pas vous, mais moi, j'adore le défilé du 14 juillet ! Les couleurs, la musique, l'émotion collective et bon enfant. Je n'en rate pas un ! Et quand j'habitais dans le 12ème arrondissement, il y a quelques années, avec vue sur les voies de la gare de Lyon, j'avais plein cadre sur le défilé aérien, et surtout sur le lâcher de couleurs, le moment que je préfère.

Cette année, j'ai eu le bonheur de tester les réflexes de mon nouveau ... reflex numérique en direct sur les Champs Elysées, et franchement, il assure bien !

On a donc commencé avec la patrouille de France ! Net et sans bavure ...

Le fossoyeur Sarkozy ne recule devant aucune provocation. A l'occasion de la "fête nationale" du 14 juillet, il a demandé à ce que des troupes de l'Etat israélien défilent sur les Champs-Elysées. Des troupes de cet Etat, 65 fois condamné par l'ONU, raciste et colonial, qui sème la terreur au Proche-Orient depuis sa création. C'est naturellement une insulte intolérable vis à vis de tous les "patriotes" français, mais aussi de tous les résistants de la juste cause palestinienne.

Dans un cadre individuel, ou au sein de groupes de résistance organisés, tous les moyens doivent être mis en oeuvre pour manifester contre cette ignoble provocation. C'est une question de dignité mais aussi d'honneur pour ceux chez lesquels ces mots ont encore un sens.

Het ene grote sportevenement is nog maar nauwelijks afgelopen of het volgende dient zich al weer aan. Op het werk worden de pooltjes weer ingevuld voor drie weken wielrennen door Frankrijk. Aanstaande zaterdag zal de Tour de France van start gaan in het Franse Brest.

De Tour-editie van 2007 was er een die bol stond van de dopingperikelen. De ploegen Astana en Cofidis moesten de Tour verlaten na een positieve dopingtest van een renner in de Tour en ook de renners Michael Rasmussen en Patrik Sinkewitz moesten met dopingperikelen de Tour verlaten.

Het dopingverhaal stond in schril contrast met de opening van de Tour in Londen. De proloog voerde de renners langs bijna alle toeristische trekpleisters in de Britse hoofdstad en werd gewonnen door Fabian Cancellara. Spartacus versloeg thuisfavoriet Bradley Wiggins. Ook in de derde etappe wist Cancellara te winnen, in de gele trui. Hierdoor verzekerde de Zwitser zich van het leidende tricot tot de eerste bergetappe.

In de eerste massasprint zorgde Robbie McEwen voor een opvallende comeback. De Australier kwam ten val en sloot op negen kilometer van de streep pas weer aan bij het peloton. Dankzij uitstekend werk van de ploeg van McEwen wist hij zich in de slotkilometer weer in een goede positie te positioneren, waarna McEwen vakkundig afrondde. Ook de aankomst in Gent leverde een verrassende winnaar op. Gert Steegmans klopte zijn eigen kopman Tom Boonen. Verder wist Boonen nog een etappe te winnen en won Filippo Pozzato de vijfde etappe, over heuvelachtig terrein, naar Autun. In die vijfde etappe kwamen de Astana-kopmannen Alexandre Vinokourov en Andreas Kloden ten val. Voor Vinokourov zal de val in deze etappe hem de hele Tour parten blijven spelen.

In de eerste bergetappe stal Linus Gerdemann de show. De Duitse coureur van T-Mobile reed op de Col de la Colombiere zijn medevluchters uit het wiel en finishte met veertig seconden voorsprong op Inigo Landaluze en 3.38 voorsprong op het peloton, wat de gele trui opleverde voor Gerdemann. De tweede bergetappe kende de eerste aankomst bergop in Tignes. Michael Rasmussen sloeg hier voor het eerst toe met een grote ontsnapping. De Deense klimgeit kreeg onder anderen T-Mobile-kopman Michael Rogers met zich mee, maar die viel er letterlijk tussenuit. Einde Tour voor Rogers. Rasmussen won ondertussen de etappe met drie minuten voorsprong op de eerste achtervolgers en vijf minuten voorsprong op Gerdemann. Rasmussen mocht de gele en de bolletjestrui aantrekken. T-Mobile moest deze etappe nog een klap incasseren. Sinkewitz moest de Tour verlaten na een positieve dopingtest voor de Tour. Hierop besloten ook de Duitse zenders ARD en ZDF de uitzendingen te staken. De laatste etappe door de Alpen leverde een verrassende overwinning op voor Mauricio Soler. De andere favorieten keken vooral naar elkaar.

In de etappe naar Montpellier was Christophe Moreau de grote verliezer. Na een relatief goede eerste anderhalve week gereden te hebben, werd de Fransman het grote slachtoffer van waaierformatie in het peloton. Moreau verloor 3.20 en zakte naar de veertiende plaats in het klassement. Het zou in de Tour niet meer goedkomen met Moreau, die uiteindelijk als 37e eindigde. Robert Hunter werd de eerste Zuid-Afrikaanse ritwinnaar ooit in de Tour, door de etappe in Montpellier te winnen. Tom Boonen won vervolgens de sprintetappe naar Castres en daarna was het woord weer aan de klassementsrijders.

De tijdrit in Albi, over heuvelachtig terrein, stond geprogrammeerd. De tijdrit leverde diverse verrassingen op. Zo maakte Alexandre Vinokourov een wonderbaarlijke comeback – later zou duidelijk worden hoe dat kwam – en wist Michael Rasmussen in zijn tijdrit Alejandro Valverde in te halen. Rasmussen wist tot ieders verbazing de gele trui te behouden in de Pyreneeen, waar de Deen een magistraal gevecht uitvocht met Alberto Contador.

De etappe met aankomst bergop op Plateau de Beille was een drama voor Vinokourov. De Kazach verloor ruim een half uur en mocht de ambities op het geel weer opbergen. Tussen Rasmussen en Contador ontstond ondertussen een fantastisch gevecht, die op Plateau de Beille in het voordeel van de Spanjaard werd beslecht. Een dag later herstelde Vinokourov zich echter op miraculeuze wijze en won zijn tweede etappe. Na zijn overwinning stond het Tour-peloton echter op zijn kop. Vinokourov was op bloeddoping betrapt na de tijdrit in Albi. Vinokourov en de gehele Astana-ploeg moesten de Tour verlaten.

Een dag later was de aankomstlijn boven op de Col d’Aubisque getrokken. Halverwege de rit sijpelde het nieuws door, dat wederom een renner betrapt was tijdens de Tour. Na de aankomst werd duidelijk dat het ging om de Italiaan Cristian Moreni. Moreni en de gehele Cofidis-ploeg werden hierop uitgesloten van deelname aan de Tour. Rasmussen won ondertussen op de Aubisque, na wederom een fantastisch gevecht met Contador. De Deen zou de slottijdrit ingaan met een voorsprong van drie minuten op Contador, ware het niet dat 25 juli ook een avond kende..

Die avond bracht nieuws dat de Tour nog heviger op zijn grondvesten deed schudden. De gele trui-drager Rasmussen werd uit koers genomen en ontslagen door de Rabobank-ploeg. De Deen zou gelogen hebben over zijn verblijfplaats. Hierdoor mocht Contador daags nadien opstappen als leider in de Tour. Rabobank ging ook gewoon door, al had Denis Menchov daar weinig zin in. De eigenlijke kopman voor de Tour de France stapte af en won enkele maanden later de Vuelta.

Michael Boogerd probeerde de Tour voor Rabobank nog een beetje te redden. In de achttiende etappe was de Hagenaar in zijn laatste Tour mee met de beslissende ontsnapping van vier coureurs, waaronder ook Axel Merckx. Sandy Casar gunde Boogerd echter geen ritzege. De Fransman van Francaise des Jeux wist zijn rit in extremis nog mee te graaien.

Na het wegvallen van Rasmussen, kende de Tour nog een spannend slot in de tijdrit. Contador had 1.53 voorsprong op Cadel Evans en 2.49 voorsprong op Levi Leipheimer. De Australier en de Amerikaan wisten in de tijdrit nog een groot deel van de voorsprong van Contador af te snoepen, maar strandden respectievelijk op 23 en 31 seconden van het geel. Het traditionele slotcriterium in Parijs leverde geen verschuivingen meer op in het klassement. Daniele Bennati won de slotetappe op de Champs Elysees en Contador mocht de gele en de witte trui meenemen naar Madrid. Tom Boonen won het puntenklassement, terwijl Mauricio Soler de beste klimmer was en dus de bolletjestrui won.

He was walking rather briskly down the Champs-Elysées, towards the Champ de Mars and the Eiffel-tower. His dark box-frame glasses hid his eyes and disguised his facial features to such an extreme that not even his own mother would recognize Jason Gale where he hurried towards the phone booth and possibly the event that would be the turn of the Cold War. He almost walked straight into a young, brown-haired girl in a blue dress and her balloon as he turned to look over his shoulder. Sweat poured from his forehead. He tipped his hat and drew his thumb over the sweat brim to clear it. He put it on again as he suddenly turned sharp to the left and disappeared into a coffee shop. Who the hell was it that had managed to chase him all the way down here? Of course it could not be the Americans, they were busy calming down Castro and the whole American population who they, rather unnecessary, had stirred down to their foundations. The Russians were as unlike to spend so many resources on one man. He decided it had to be a couple of drunken Secret Service agents who wanted to show themselves one last time before Nixon gave them up to Brezhnev and the Gulag.
His beliefs were utterly confirmed when the two men he had spotted behind him stopped at the spot where he had vanished into the coffee shop. The silver Rolex watches of their left wrists gave them away quite easy where it stuck out of their suit arms. He waited inside the cafeteria for some thirty minutes until he was certain they were gone, before he let himself slide out of the glass door and continued down the broad and heavily trafficked street.
As he entered the empty phone booth at the far corner of the champ de Mars, he pulled out a small purple book, the kind that journalists today use, and found what he was looking for. On the cover of what would be the end of the book someone had written down a series of numbers, all adding up to 108. He typed the numbers into the machine, and waited for it to ring. He once again dried the sweat from the brim of his hat and answered the phone the second it rang. The voice of a lady was on the other end. Her voice was clear, slow and appealed to the man inside the booth in a way, as if it reminded him of a long lost teenage crush. He received his orders and then he hung up. He knelt down, facing the large tower, and with his left hand, he dug in under the metal plate he stood on and found a ring. The ring was made of a golden material and was fitted with a large blue stone. He put it on his right index finger and stepped out of the booth. He turned again so that he now stood, again facing the tower. He pulled something out of his pocket, took off his glasses and threw them into the road to the left of him. He put the object from his pocket between his hands as he folded them. He touched his forehead with the ring before started speaking, very lowly.

As he turned away from the smoking and crumbling remains of the ash pile that once had been one of the most beloved and monumental landmarks in France, and really the whole world, he started to bleed from his eyes. He now faced Arc de Triomphe. His right index finger started to burn with extreme intensity, and his fingernail fell off as the blue stone fell to the ground. He saw the sunlight becoming brighter and brighter over Paris before the screaming began. Jason Gale was struck with terror as he watched the faces of every man, woman and child around him stretch in agony and fear before they melted, only to poor like liquid to the paved roads around Champ de Mars. It had been too strong. He fucking knew it! He had told him time after time that it was not safe yet, and that certain things had been banned by Thule for good reasons. His left hand turned to dark grey ash, crumbled and fell to the ground as a large dark crow took to its wings from whatever he had pulled out of his pocket. He saw Arc de Triomphe fall apart and becoming dematerialized before his head and his whole body was turned into bright, pure light.

The crow shouted once. A long, sad shriek over a dead battlefield before it fell dead silent through the air and its feathers grew to black moths which flew all over the lost city and fell to the ground as pieces of ash.

Voilà donc le special very big blitz happening dont je parlais hier et auquel nous avons été convié grâce à deux sympathiques designers. Bon, faut dire qu'au début on était assez méfiants (les organisateurs précisaient qu'il fallait venir avec sa table de bridge pliante, ça pose tout de suite l'ambiance, or nous, voyez-vous, on n'est pas trop bridge...). N'empêche, après enquête, l'idée nous excitait pas mal. Et ben on n'a pas été déçus ! Un drôle de mélange entre le jeu de piste, le diner avec des bons potes, d'ailleurs on a rencontré un couple très sympathique ce soir, amis des designers en question et designers eux-mêmes, et un truc très bourgeois, genre dîner de mariage placé-guindé (hum, quelques réminiscences de mon éducation de province) ou le happening entre happy few parisiens.

Une très chouette soirée en fait. Et je pense que bon nombre de personnes auraient aimé être des nôtres. Mais voilà, ça marche par cooptation uniquement. Nous, on s'est dit, pourquoi pas un truc juste entre nous une fois par mois, une couleur différente à chaque fois, un lieu inconnu des autres... En tout cas, ça m'a donné envie de revoir le gens avec qui j'ai diné ce soir. Merci !

PS : au menu, pour nous ce soir, c'était guacamole, salade de riz, écrevisses et ornithogales, comté, salade de fruits, accompagné d'une bouteille de viognier (même cépage que le Condrieu que j'aime tant) et au dernier, moment, une glace Ben&Jerry's qui passait par là. Ouaouh...

A l'heure de la rédaction de ce billet, tout le monde doit être en train de ranger les dernières affaires dans le panier à pique-nique ou sur le point de prendre le dernier métro.

Cette année, ils ont descendu cette célèbre artère. La boucle est bouclée.

En toute logique, si le Louvre, la Concorde, les Champs-Elysées et l'Etoile ont été investis, il ne reste plus qu'à continuer à suivre la voie triomphale... si vous voyez ce que je veux dire...

Edit (13/06): Le blog très sympathique d'un "friendly Parisian", Paris Daily Photo (dont je conseille fortement la lecture), en a fait un diaporama qui semble bien exprimer l'état d'esprit de ce dîner en blanc 2008.

Les cheveux dans le vent, en ce doux samedi, nous passons devant le magasin La Durée. Vous ne savez pas ce que c'est? Bande d'incultes, un peu de culture et de savoir-vivre français, s'il vous plaît!

Ladurée, c'est le magasin de macarons! La French Touch de la pâtisserie connue au niveau international! Qui aime les macarons connaît Ladurée! On vient du Japon, des States, de la Pologne et même du Kurdistan pour savourer les macarons Ladurée, à Paris of course! Ladurée concourt au rayonnement international de la France dans le monde ! (la redondance, c'est fait véritablement pour insister :p)

- Tu me fais une blague, tu ne connaissais pas?

- Non. Mais en même temps, je m'en fous, je n'aime pas les macarons.

- ...

(Vous avez dû deviner assez rapidement celui qui avait une culture française et celle qui ne l'avait pas).

The rather underwhelming Arc de Triomphe sits in the middle of the famous rotary Place Charles de Gaulle, better known as L'Étoile, the star, with a clear view on the Grande Arche at La Defense and on the famous tree lined stretch of the Champs Elysées where the shops vary from upscale designer brands to the more affordable stores you might find at any mall.

Four metro stops to the southeast lies the Place de la Concorde. It's not a short walk, but if the weather permits, it can certainly be a nice one. Intermittent views on the Eiffel tower, on the Grand and Petit Palais, and on half a dozen other palace like structures emphasize Paris' grandiose past. Grandiose and gory. The obelisk of Luxor marks the spot where once stood the guillotine.

The Louvre lies at the end of the Jardin des Tuileries. Entirely a matter of personal preference, I much preferred the more contemporary works of the Musée d'Orsay, though the Louvre admittedly houses an impressive collection of pre-1848 art from all corners of the globe, from Egyptian bas-reliefs, Islamic stucco panels, Persian friezes, Roman murals and Rococco chaises to the world renowned Venus de Milo and Mona Lisa.

We then continued on to Les Halles to see the beautiful Eglise Saint Eustache and then to the Centre Pompidou and the famous Igor Stravinsky fountain next door.  We were too beat by then to tour the largest collection of modern art in Europe. Tired, cold and hungry we scrambled instead for Le Potager du Marais, a cosy vegetarian restaurant on Rue Rambuteau where a radiant Greek waitress served us delicious, healthy food. I can certainly recommend this place if, like me, you'd rather pass up the heavy meats and cheeses of the traditional French cuisine.

Here’s something interesting that I read.

Apparently, there was this French architect, Charles Ribart, who added a sense of “fun” in his works, in an age of architectural grandeur.

It is said that he planned an addition to the Champs Elysées, in Paris, where the Arc de Triomphe stands now. It was s’posed to be building on 3 levels, in the shape of an elephant. (I would say that would be an amazing thing to build) It was to consist of a ballroom, with the entry through a spiral staircase from the elephant’s underbelly. The drainage was to be incorporated in the trunk and all the furniture were to be folded into the walls of the elephant when not in use.

But the French government wasn’t amused and called the entire thing off!

A avenida que é um símbolo de Paris viu suas tradicionais Brasseries, cinemas e lojas locais darem lugar a grandes conglomerados como a Disney store, Adidas e Gap desde os anos 80. Até a última agência de correios da Avenida não terá seu contrato reonovado, de acordo com François Label, o prefeitinho do 8th arrondissement.
