He drew up some rough sketches. It was a cute little thing; he wanted it to look like a barn, complete with a gambel roof. It seemed silly for this chicken house to be so fancy, but on paper at least, it was small and functional, so I approved, and off hubby went to the hardware store.

He returned several hours later laden with all manner of wood (plywood, 2x4s, even lattice), roofing shingles, styrofoam insulation, hardware (tiny hinges, bolts, and vents), and "hurricane paint" in red and white cans. The total bill was well above $300.

I had to clarify what, exactly, he hoped to build. He reassured me it was a hen house per the drawing I had approved. I then realized that I had not requested a detailed description of the exact size of this building. Big mistake.

And indeed, Byrd and his brother proceeded to slap together a barn-shaped structure that looked just like the sketch. The thing is easily the size of a dog house. I can (and did) sit inside it.

In fact Byrd and I discussed making and selling these as dog or hen houses for people in the Austin area. But I am not so sure that would be lucrative, especially in this economy.

We still have a few things to work on. It needs a front door, trim (which will be white), the air vents (there is a ridge vent in the roof but we are also going to have some circular vents running just under the roof line), and the inside accessories like linoleum on the floor (for easy cleaning), nest boxes, and perches.

Then we have to lift up the dog kennel and drag this monstrosity inside it. More pictures to come.

Peepers, meanwhile, didn't give a hoot about all the commotion. He was thoroughly enjoying his freedom outside for the entire time we were working on the hen house (about six hours). Peepers is not too fond of being stuck in the bathtub all the time. I wish there was some way to reassure him that it's not a permanent situation. We just have to finish the work on his kennel and his castle.

Why are women still called "girls" after we grow up?

Females are not supposed to mature. We are more valuable in this society (to men) if we stay young, and sexy/attractive. We are supposed to be a bit sillier, too. Not as intelligent as our husbands, and not as serious. We can (and should) spend a good amount of time making ourselves look “cute” and sexy (for the men). We wear clothes that make us look smaller, we sit “smaller” than men (legs together/crossed), and we generally try to make ourselves look slimmer/littler/petite. Like a girl. So we look good to guys. In contrast, boys are encouraged to “man-up” and become a man quickly, it is good for them to mature. They aren’t supposed to continue looking like boys, if they do they will be effeminate men, who are ‘less’ than real men.  

"Girls" is demeaning to women:

Calling us "girls" makes many women feel patronized, demeaned, belittled infantilized, talked down to and less respected.

Other belittling terms for women include “chick”, “babe”, “baby” (“babe”/”baby” may not always be belittling, but it can be belittling if a man uses it for his girlfriend but she does not use it for him).

The sex industry almost always calls it’s female workers “girls” (partly because this is considered ‘sexier’ than ‘woman’). The word “Ladies” is sexy too. Using the word “ladies” would show that the sex worker women are adults, and that they should be respected (not belittled). I think the sex industry likes the term ‘girls’ over ‘ladies’ because it implies a hierarchy where the johns are more important than the women who serve them, they are ‘Kings’ for a while, and their needs are more important than the needs of the women. The sex industry thrives off the need for these men to feel important/valuable. That it has to do this by demeaning/belittling women, however, is very disturbing.

Alternatives to the word “Girl”:

1.       The word “lady” used to be used for only upper class white women - and today is still used more for white, well-off women than for non-white or poor women, I think. So using the word “ladies” to refer to all women may be problematic.

2.       The word “woman” may be better. The only ‘problem’ with this word is that it is considered sexless, unsexy, boring, prudish, old, plain, and ugly.  The word “girl” is seen as sexy. It is creepy to me that “girl” is considered sexy when “woman” is not (a ‘woman’ is considered ‘too old’ to be sexy. This is part of the beauty myth). ‘Woman’ should be considered sexy, not ‘girl’. We need to help change this definition of ‘woman’ so that it can include attractive and sexy.

Here is a closeup of Peepers's head. You can't see the teeny puncture wounds he has, but you can definitely see the bruises. This is his better eye; he keeps the other one closed most of the time. The vet reassures me that there's no real damage to either eye, just swelling and pain because both eyes have puncture wounds very close to them.

On a lighter note, before all this happened I got a good video of Peepers jumping up high for mealworm treats. I'm going to try and cut out all the boring parts, clean it up a bit, and then I'll post it here.

Peeps was up and around this morning. I took him to a bird vet who had suitable antibiotics, and the vet also gave me a pain killer/steroid to reduce swelling and pain. Poor Peeps's little head was swollen around the scratch marks, forcing his eyes (mostly his left eye) closed. He was also reluctant to move his beak to peck for food, and when he did make a miserable effort, he pretty much missed the food.

But the meds really seem to have helped Peepers perk back up. He is still moving very slow, and he sticks close to me and Dozer (the dog) when I take him outside for some sun. But he pecks valiantly, if vainly, at grass and dirt. He does a little better with the chicken feed. And my husband brought home a feast of crickets and mealworms that Peepers, with some help, gobbled enthusiastically; I had to beg hubby not to overfeed our poor chicken on the first day of recuperation.

Peepers will probably be spending the next few days inside, sleeping in the bathtub (now that I don't have to worry about him dying on me), until we can get some sort of defense up around the kennel. Hubby is pushing for an electric fence (?!?!) but I think a simple 2' plywood wall around the base of the kennel would be sufficient to deter any grab-and-go cats.

We will not disturb the sanctity and the original purpose behind the newsletter.

This is just for those occasional breaks in your otherwise 'hectic' workdays! So..Cheers.....Guys...! And yes...the new page is on the top right hand corner (in case you haven't noticed!).

It was a great relief when he lifted himself up and peeped as I called his name, but that relief was quite overshadowed by the blood all over his head.

Once inside the house, with some of the blood rinsed off, Peepers had trouble opening his eyes. He made peepy sounds when touched or moved, and kept his balance pretty well, but if left alone for a few minutes, he would sort of flop as if he had just fallen asleep.

Recognizing this as a sign of shock, and recalling the countless wild birds I'd collected from bad situations only to watch them go into shock and die within hours, I panicked and took Peepers to the after-hours emergency vet.

The vet cleaned out his wounds, which appear to be claw wounds (thank goodness, not bite wounds, as bite wounds from a cat, at least, are essentially fatal to birds), and gave him some fluids, and told me he needed antibiotics from a "chicken vet." Apparently the antibiotics they had at the emergency vet are not legal to give to birds that are going to be used for food purposes (eating the chicken or its eggs), and while Peepers is a pet that I would absolutely not think of eating, we had hoped to eat his (her) eggs if he turns out to be a girl. I thought about saying, well, then we won't eat Peepers's eggs--but then I realized that if we had two other hens laying eggs some day in the future as we planned, it might become difficult to sort out whose eggs are whose unless Peepers stays isolated from the other hens somehow.

The vet reassured me at that point that waiting on the antibiotics was not going to be the deciding factor for Peepers's survival. So tomorrow I'll be calling around for a vet that can administer antibiotics to food chickens.

Assuming Peepers survives the night. It's hard to say whether he's truly at death's door or just plain dead tired. It's now almost 10 PM, and Peepers's usual bedtime is about 7 PM (when it gets dim outside), so he's likely exhausted after the trauma of the attack, the ride to and from the vet, and the vet's treatment. He's got his little head tucked under his wing right now, trying to block out the bedroom light and the television sounds.

I am having a very hard time understanding how something managed to get its claws on Peepers. Peepers would have had to have been sound asleep in a corner of the kennel, and the animal (cat, most likely) would have crept up behind him and somehow squeezed its paw through the mesh, the holes of which are the size of a nickle, and then gotten its paw around Peepers's head. And then realized that the chicken can't be pulled through the mesh--at least, not in one piece.

He did bark at something this morning and run down the front yard, but Mom hollered out the door and reminded him the flags were down there. I'm not exactly sure what he was barking at, but I did see something about the size of a rabbit, only it wasn't a rabbit, run across the driveway. So I'm thinking maybe it was a cat?

The little stuffed animal in the picture is a little puppy dog that I gave him. He was so excited that I actually gave it to him! It's one of his favorite toys now!

My new comforter set for my bed came today! Mom had ordered me one since the old one I had was way too small for my bed (I think it was a twin size or something like that!) and it really looks wonderful! It's yellow and light blue to match my room, and Mom has matching border she wants to put in my room.. She likes border, she has some up in her room, but we have to re-paint my bedroom first, she says, since it only has one coat. The comforter is going to be nice and cozy, because it's really thick! I can't hardly wait for bedtime tonight. :)

The little guinea girl that hurt her leg flying off the chicken pen is slowly getting better. She was walking a bit better today, though still hopping somewhat. I've been keeping her penned up while I let the others out all day.

Puffy Buffy (who's actually not Puffy Buffy.. she was Puffy Buffy's sister!), Dove, Tiny, and The-Little-Hurt-Guinea-Girl (I need to find her a good name...) now occupy the Rooster Pen during the daytime. Yesterday I noticed Dovie getting attacked by one of the Princesses (spotted hens), so during the day she can stay with the rest of the invalids! I'm just going to have to start putting all of them in the turkey house brooder building, and call it the Nursing Home!

The picture on the right here is of the little guineas pecking my shoe. That's Sammy's big head unfocused right there. I never can seem to get him to stand still long enough to get a focused picture of him!! Jesse is in the top left corner.

I was looking through my folder of wallpapers that I've downloaded in the past, and saw this real nice looking fall one. I showed it to Mom and asked her what was the first Scripture verse that came to mind when she saw it.. and, well, here it is!
