Yesterday afternoon I had beers with an individual who’s just as excited about the future of how w

Yesterday afternoon I had beers with an individual who’s just as excited about the future of how we will interact and the technology that will play a part in that as I am. It got me so excited in fact that I began to think about what that will actually look like and the neat thing about it too is I don’t think we are too far off. In the tech industry already buzz about virtualization and cloud computing and SaaS (the jargon that will someday make your lives much more easier and much more fun and much more connected) has exponentially grown month to month and action is already beginning to take place. Now, people a lot more brilliant than me with far greater vision can better describe the world right around the corner involving technology and our lives but I’ve decided to share what my vision is. Besides, if you’re reading my blog…most likely you’re not reading theirs! (That’s not a knock on you either, thank you for reading this, but those visionaries blogs tend to be too techy and the only other readers tend to be other techies)

So, my vision…it began with a comment that Online videos are the next big thing. I agree with this. They’ve already begun to push and consumers are buying into ‘em. But it’s not the same watching it on a 17” screen with headphones. Plus, laptops aren’t getting bigger…they’re getting smaller. So for online videos to really change the way we rent or buy movies they are going to have to translate on a bigger scale and be available a lot quicker. The vision that I have then centers on a lot bigger screen: our television. But it’ll be soon much more than that. Now, of course this isn’t at all groundbreaking and nothing I write here necessarily will be. Hopefully though, it pushes you to think about the change that’s on its why and where you’ll fit in because YOU are going to be playing a much bigger role; not simply standing behind the keyboard or remote.

Back to the television though…it’ll will be more of a portal than a television. Think of the Yellow Book commercial with the woman touching the screen looking for information regarding someone to erase a tattoo. It’ll be almost that. Everything from TV to the internet to movies to software/programs it will be there but not limited to the confines that your computer limits you. In fact, in a way the personal computer will go. Instead you will have this portal that connects to the virtualized center where all your info/tainment and all the info/tainment you want will be stored. Now, I know after reading that security concerns already are probably popping up in your head. “Does that mean my personal information will be stored on a web that can be hacked into by others?” That’s a question and concern that will certainly have to be answered as these technologies come about. It’s already a key discussion piece surrounding cloud computing (the power behind this technology = the data centers that will be home to this massive amount of information).

That’s the tech stuff though, which I find fascinating and of course look forward to what that will all look like. But it’s the interactive aspect that really fascinates me. It’s how you will play a role. You see, because of the interaction between us as consumers and the technology that’s going to open up this world, this new platform will be more social than ever. Social Media already has changed the way we interact in a lot of ways but it’ll go beyond community sites such as MySpace or Facebook or at least they’ll have to keep up and transform. But your whole life will (or I should say ‘can’ as you decide how much you see fit) be an interaction. The way you communicate, the way you shop, the way entertain…the way you share. Now why does this matter? Because on the other end, the companies and the brands are going to be only finger tips away. If you don’t like a product or a service you will be able to let them know and not only will they will be listening but the world will be listening. It’s already begun in the blogosphere and message boards. Companies are already putting their ears upon this new ground and listening to what’s being said. But this new world will put everyone on the map. Your interaction with that company will be much more instant. That’s not to even mention the prices of certain products too are going to be more competitive than ever. Again, you’ll only be fingertips away from finding better deals.

This all translates to the fact that your behavior will play a much bigger role in the decisions of companies product, movement, etc. That might seem scary, too much big brother, but really this is already happening. But it’s going be on a much larger level and we are going to have to accept it and, more so, embrace it. It used to be that evil marketers determined for us what to by using copyright as bait. But things have changed. Of course advertising is still there pushing us but you as consumers and how you consume is more important than ever and they are watching you. It’s not simply how do we get consumers to buy but how do we get connected with them. It’s not “follow me”, it’s “can I join you?” Let’s enjoy that aspect as consumers and play our roles! This is where social media will continue to evolve too! Companies such as me.dium are already building products based solely on interaction and that’s just a search engine! This is where I see this new virtualized technology taking us. Again, probably not groundbreaking but have you thought recently how you will play a role? If you’re a marketer have you thought about where you’ll fit in? The thinking needs to begin now to stay ahead. I see these advances happening sooner than later.

10 things I can do in the cloud I couldn’t a year ago.

10 things I can do in the cloud I couldn't a year ago.

10. Everything on the go. iPhone. It has opened up mobile computing. Can do pretty much everything from the mobile phone now. Email. Document access. Review presentation on way to talk on train. Hopefully soon give cloud hosted slides from phone too. Can get normal work done from phone at airport without hauling out the computer. Impact about what is coming and what to expect.

9. Search all my mail. Google's move to cloud computing really started with GMail. Has 14 GB of mail. Can save everything. "Do you know Bob?" Search email and find old communication from years ago. (externalize nonessential memory?) But can still access the actual content in the traditional ways if desired through preferred clients. Important for enterprise clients who are attached to their desktop applications because they already know how to use them, even if they have complaints about the shortcomings of a given tool. Hit sync when boarding is called at airport, process it all in the air, sync upon land to send.

8. Chat with customers and partners in any language. Real time translation on chat. Collaboration can cross boundaries - not just within a company, but internationally. Invite a chat bot natively within GChat. Invite a foreign language speaker. Start chatting as normal and get live translation sent with your messages. Very useful for international chatting, can also teach the translator by sending feedback if the translation is not very good.

7. Collaborate simply and securely on projects with sites and documents. Shared document space creates single repository. Can then grant journalists and others access when launch documents are ready, they can track changes and revisions until time to announce. Makes a lot of version tracking obsolete.

6. Organize all business travel by email. Tripit.com

Accepts confirmation messages and it parses your itinerary components and aggregates them into a single itinerary. Adds them to you calendar too via iCal feed you can subscribe to. Has iphone optimized mobile interface as well. Makes confirmation numbers easier to find, when at a check in desk. Built on existing, widely adopted technology: email. Also allows sharing to track and notify others about where people are if on the road.

5. collect data in forms and dump to spreadsheet. (Google Spreadsheets - "Create new form" menu option) Drag and drop to reorder questions. gives embed code. Live tracking as results come in as well has spreadsheet copy for later use. Dynamically updates spreadsheet in the background.

4. Build any scalable business application on the cloud platform. Google app engine, force.com, AWS. Not just small applications. On demand large processing without major infrastructure costs.

3. Online templates for documents, spreadsheets, presentations.

2. Run fast, secure, stable web applications. Broswer is the gateway to the cloud. Chrome is a speed, usability leap forward. Geared for next generation web applications. Sergey asks the developers daily when the Mac version will be ready, so it will be okay for us Apple people soon. Run browser as application window that interacts with OS like desktop software. Can kill individual plugins and tabs without closing whole browser application. Order of magnitude faster javascript engine over IE.

1. Video sharing in Google apps. Mac, Phone and flip cam mean 3 videocameras being carried around all the time. Lots of opportunities for sharing and communicating. 3000 sign ups a day at Google, huge growth in usage and adoption.

The latest earth-shaking news from everybody’s favorite “don’t be evil” corp

The latest earth-shaking news from everybody's favorite "don't be evil" corporate giant, Google, is that they are currently beta-testing a new browser called Google Chrome. This may not seem like much at first glance, but they certainly seem to think that it will change the way end users access the internet for the better.

In one of the smartest moves I could have possibly imagined, they enlisted the aid of superstar comic creator Scott McCloud (author of the landmark educational book Understanding Comics, among many other works) to produce a graphic primer/explanation/instruction manual for Chrome. This works far better than any press release could have, going beyond the use of simple illustrations to genuinely create something that informs you seamlessly and equally with with both text and visual cues. Much of the back-end information would have been incomprehensible to me as an end user, but McCloud and the Google Team make it accessible.

If Google Chrome is capable of delivering on its promises, then it will enable faster, more functional and more secure internet browsing while rivaling Apple for user-friendliness. Are you interested? Try out the beta and see for yourself!

If you haven’t used the Live Mesh service from Microsoft yet, it’s worth checking out. A

If you haven't used the Live Mesh service from Microsoft yet, it's worth checking out. As part of their whole cloud computing / SaaS initiative, the current features include a centralized "Live Desktop" with 5 GB of storage and the ability to add multiple remote devices. The remote devices currently supported are XP or Vista machines (though it does work on Server 2003), and will soon include Macs and Windows Mobile devices. One of the most useful features is synchronization between devices; so files & folders, media, and applications on one are accessible on another, or from the Live Desktop. Also supported, and my favorite feature, is the ability to remotely access a device through your web browser in what is basically an Active-X Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) plug-in. If you've used Remote Desktop Web Connection or TechNet Labs, the interface is pretty identical. The traffic is over HTTPS / port 443 and doesn't require any firewall holes to be opened.

It is still in a Tech Preview release, so there will be bugs. I came across one that can be seen when you connect to a remote device that is configured to display a logon message prompt. Upon connection, when you send the Ctrl-Alt-Del command to get the login box, the message prompt and login box both display for less than a second, and you are then taken right back to the Ctrl-Alt-Del prompt, never able to enter credentials. I tried several workarounds and key combos that didn't work, and submitted a bug report to the Mesh dev team. I eventually stumbled on a suitable workaround until this is resolved: simply connect to the remote device, close the RDC browser window and then immediately reconnect to the remote device. You'll then be able to click through the message prompt and enter your credentials. It's kludgy but it works. Of course you could also just disable the message prompt, but I've always preferred software to actually work like it's supposed to over making changes to appease it.

This is my new little home on the interwebs and at less than two months old I’m averaging 1500

This is my new little home on the interwebs and at less than two months old I'm averaging 1500 unique ISP's a week. One of two things has happened:

Y'all think I'm fabulous and can't wait to hear what I say next
Y'all think I'm an idjiot and don't want to miss a good train wreck

Like any good blogger I'm okay with it either way.

Here's what's really interesting, and you'll have to trust me on this because you can't see my back end stats. According to statcounter I'm getting a lot of Alaska action. When you look at my comments and people have talked about baby showers for baby Trig I've seen the ISP's. They match. Alaska loves me and I'm intrigued with what Alaskans have to say about Sarah Palin.

Some of you have sent me some very personal family photos that include newborn Baby Trig and various women holding him. I've not seen these photos anywhere else and I'm not publishing them here because it's unfair to the kids, all the kids. However, it makes be believe you when you say you know the family, that and the fact that your ISP is logged when you comment.

Oh, I've rambled.

The point is this.

Two people who have sent Palin pictures and info to me have had their computers hacked in the past 48 hours. It might be highly coincidental (I think it is) or it might not be (who doesn't love a conspiracy theory?).

Social media is not for the faint of heart. If you're putting yourself out there, you need to know that people will hate you for your views. This is not a moment in American history where politics is bringing people together. Talking politics right now could be alienating people and losing friends. It shouldn't mean that your personal data will be destroyed.

Today's email (the second of it's kind in just as many days) reads:

My computer, a new Apple was hacked last night and hard drive was destroyed, wiped clean. I lost everything, photos, info, work.

Please tell people to be careful. If you look on these sites, protect your computer with routers with firewalls or store all your personal data on external hard drives and nothing on the computer.

I learned the hard way that the Internet has eyes and they are out to destroy those trying to inform. I also decided, it's all true. No one is scared without truth to make them run.

No, I won't be telling you who sent it to me.

Yes, I have always been a fan of remote storage. My computer runs faster and I can feel free to waste my days playing Word Twist on Facebook do my own PR with Social Media online.

As for the Alaskans who frequent my new little home here, I'd love to hear from you. Would you like to guest post? I'll give you a forum. The traffic is high here and increasing daily. Email me at OnlineAuthor at gmail dot com and I'll publish what you've got. You can remain anonymous or you can put your name on it. Not my decision.

OMG I'm like The Druge Report with really great hair! (couldn't help it, taking myself too seriously is obnoxious)

Google Docs? Now that works! and it's up in the cloud.

Sound off in the comments below. I like to know these things. I'm interested in what people use.

Thanks for everyone who made it to SDG last week! I got very good feedback about the event and I think everyone had a blast. The topic of the next SDG will be Google App Enginge. In May Jani Luostarinen talked about Amazon Web Services and specially about S3 and EC2. Now it is time to have a look what google has to offer in this space. Stefano J. Attardi is a CPO of Zipipop. He has been using Python for web-development since 2001 and has lot of experience about different frameworks. He started using Google App Engine shortly after it was published. Here is how he introduces us to the topic.

Google App Engine

App Engine looks like the dream platform for Python web developers. It makes deployment completely transparent. You press one button and the site goes live, and it scales indefinitely. No syncing and restarting servers, no load balancing, database replication, etc... And it's free! Too good to be true?

I will cover:

The Good Things: deployment, versioning, logs, data viewer, scalability, reliability, costs.

The Bad Things (and how to live with them): quotas, profiling, limits on files, subdomains, custom error pages, data viewer, ssl, lock-in.

Tips: data modeling, scheduled tasks, using versions, timezones, unit testing.

Conclusions: when to use it, when not to use it?

Back in July, we looked at how cloud computing may force appliance vendors to change the way they build products. Now rPath, which makes release management tools for virtual appliances, is announcing support for EC2 on its rBuilder portal, a web site that lets users turn software into virtual appliances and publish them to clouds and virtual environments with a few clicks. It's an impressive step in web-based release management for virtual environments, but rPath's road may be bumpy.

Virtual appliances are bundles of software and "just enough operating system," as rPath chief evangelist Marty Wesley puts it, to make them run. Software destined for an appliance comes in the form of distributions (such as Red Hat's RPM format) that contain the code and related libraries. rPath's tool first teases apart these distributions and identifies their components.

Armed with a list of what needs to go into the appliance, the tool then tailors it to the target cloud or virtual machine. "We grab the contents [of the distribution] and add them to a cart," said Wesley. For example, if the appliance is destined for VMware, rPath adds code specific to that environment; for EC2, it leaves out the kernel and requests EC2 credentials. Finally, the system publishes the results to a variety of environments.

The Raleigh, N.C.-based startup is filled with Red Hat alumni, including CTO Erik Troan, who authored the Red Hat software packaging system RPM. rPath is seeing modest growth from its enterprise offering, claiming 58 customers since its launch in 2006, many of whom are large enterprises or ISVs who want to ship VM-ready versions of their software. The company has taken in a total of $25 million in funding, with a $15 million round completed this April, and has 25 engineers. Both CohesiveFT and FastScale are competitors, although they don't support as many target environments; JumpBox, meanwhile, makes pre-built appliances for many popular applications.

But rPath is at a crossroads. If it wants to own the enterprise release management cycle, it needs more than just Linux RPM distributions. Here, Microsoft is just around the corner with its suite of virtualization, operating systems, and applications.

On the other hand, if rPath wants to focus on clouds with its catalog of appliances, it needs to move beyond individual machines and into scalable, multimachine application clusters. Wesley says the company is already pursuing this, but cloud management firms Elastra, 3Tera and Enomalism have a head start, offering management, scaling and licensing tools for virtual machines.

Whatever the bumps ahead, rPath's portal and new EC2 support is a reminder of just how easily and quickly companies can move applications into an on-demand environment and free software from its underlying platform.

Ever get the sense that the IT world is changing too quickly. Well hang on because this ice berg is going to flip. Virtualization and cloud computing are the latest buzz words in the IT world. Virtualization allows companies to consolidate equipment while maintaining service - essentially a cost saving exercise. Cloud computing, a reference to clouds drawn on IT diagrams, is a concept where the servers are not local to a company but are out-there somewhere on the net. Applied to desktops, virtualization and cloud computing may change the nature of computing and cause large shifts in the IT marketplace.

Cloud-computing based desktop virtualization is a disruptive technology. In the last thirty years, computing power has been distributed from a mainframe to the desktop. Desktop virtualization will recreate that mainframe experience but with much more flexibility. With cloud computing, computing power will become a commodity and the desktop computer, the one you use on a daily basis, will become more of a terminal. At the extreme, the desktop computer may be replaced by a simple internet device that has no software.

The benefits to organizations basically come down to a tremendous savings in the total cost of ownership. Most companies are not IT savvy and don't want to be: IT is not their core competency. They want to buy IT capabilities the same way they buy power or other utilities. Virtualization and cloud computing will provide this opportunity. Complex corporate IT infrastructure will become a thing of the past with many companies able to use networks about as sophisticated as the one in your home. Companies will not have to own, manage, upgrade, expand or deal with IT infrastructure.

Imagine your Internet service provider giving you and your co-workers each a simple computing device along with your corporate or home internet connection. You use this device to connect with a powerful server somewhere in the cloud. All your applications and data are there, protected in a data center with lots of bandwidth available to you. Sound far out? Well then, read about HP or Verizon's plans with Desktone. And Desktone is not alone: the number of new entrants in this market is growing quickly. Also read Reuven Cohen's blog "The Desktop Cloud".

The implications are huge:

Organizational change: The biggest reason most "office workers" go to the office is because that is where the IT infrastructure is. Desktop virtualization will change this. If you have access to your desktop from any internet connection and are well supported by collaborative tools, why do you need to go to the office every day? To attend meetings? What else? Could you have Meeting Monday's and stay home the rest of the time?

Restructuring in the IT sector: What will happen to all the IT staff at all the companies that no longer have any IT?

No more software to buy: Everything will become a subscription service with a pay-as-you-go approach. You will not have to buy, install, register or configure any software. Software licenses will have to change accordingly. As a commodity, this model will not support license fees. Open source software will have a tremendous advantage here.

Microsoft can only lose: As the leader, commodity pricing will reduce their revenue. They will be competing with to Sun, Google, Amazon, IBM and others that can provide the VDI service without any Microsoft software. Google is well on the way with its Google Apps and now Chrome. In addition, the Microsoft operating system and desktop designs do not lend themselves to the cloud computing / virtualized desktop space and require special management solutions. Again, I see an opportunity for open source solutions here such as Ulteo.

Internet service providers will win: They are in the best position to provide the service. The last quarter mile problem of getting high-bandwidth to the desktop will be reduced. Rural areas may be well served by high-speed dialup connections.

Data centers will win: All the cloud computing servers will have to be hosted somewhere.

Multi-media may suffer: Streaming applications that use lots of bandwidth may not work very well when going from source to server to client.

Value added services will win: Sales of software will be replaced by subscriptions to service providers and contracts to value-added integrators. IBM has already embraced this model with tremendous support for open source software projects but they make their money from contracting services.

More freedom: The controls over what you can access on the internet will be determined by where the server is located, not by where you are connected to the internet. People in China or Turkey will be able to benefit from servers in more liberal countries that have full access to the internet. (Then again, countries with restrictive Internet policies may ban these services as well.)

More danger: the possibilities for malicious use are higher. Like off-shore banking used to evade taxes, cloud computing can be used to hide all sorts of nefarious wrong doing.

The end of Moore's law for the desktop: The main computer sold will become a simple device with a browser, screen, mouse, keyboard and an internet connection. Or it will be your phone.

Let me know what you think.
