Yes, I have heard that lots of people had a lot of problems with Media Temple's Grid hosting plan - downtime, slowness, the whole lot.  So why am I considering Media Temple's (gs) plan? One reason is that I really like their higher end dedicated virtual (dv) plans a lot and MT doesn't seem to have any problems with them. So, should the site become successful and draws significant traffic, I want to migrate from the (gs) plan to their much more reliable (dv) plan anyway. I think it's MUCH easier to migrate a site within a hosting company than between hosting companies.

Second reason - MT's site looks awesome. Yes I have heard the mantra, "Don't judge a book by its cover", but the awesomeness of MT's site seems to point to their passion and commitment to what they do. I can judge companies for their up-time, support, pricing, technology etc, but I believe that passion, above all, is what's most important. And MT shows it. So I'm pretty sure I'll be hosting with them.

The third reason - MT's worst problems with the Grid was back in 2006 and 2007. It appears the Grid has stabilized a lot more since.

The fourth reason - Notable companies such as Adobe and Starbucks have dealt with/are doing business with MT. This probably isn't a really good reason, but still it gives me some confidence :-)

The fifth reason - MT has a AA rating from the Better Business Bureau.

The sixth reason (and probably the biggest one) - Intuition!

Ya decía que la palabra cluster estará de moda y se escuchará bastante dentro de los discursos políticos o actuaciones encaminadas hacia la innovación.

Hace un par de días apareció el siguiente artículo en el País Digital que cuenta que puntos fuertes hay que seguir para el desarrollo de un Silicon Valley en Europa. En mi anterior post ya escribí algunos detalles pero seguro que aquí encuentras un razonamiento más explicito y detallado.

Estas son algunas de las ideas de la actual política europea en cuanto a clusteres:

1. Construir sobre los puntos fuertes ya existentes. Los clústeres no se pueden sembrar sobre terreno baldío, allí donde a un político le parezca oportuno. Sólo se pueden cultivar en lugares que ya están creciendo y podrían florecer.

2. Concentrar los recursos en hacer unas cuantas cosas realmente bien. No dispersar el dinero. Escoger sólo algunas de las regiones y sectores más prometedores a la hora de prestarles apoyo.

3. Ser abiertos. Alentar a las personas con talento, se hallen en la región del mundo en la que se hallen, a que trabajen en los clústeres de Europa. Promover la abierta competencia entre universidades, empresas y regiones en la consecución de financiación. Promover que las personas, las ideas, las disciplinas científicas y los sectores industriales crucen las fronteras.

4. Realizar estudios comparativos, supervisar y ser transparentes. Basar la financiación y la política regulatoria no en el choque de intereses políticos, sino en el análisis empírico de lo que funciona y lo que no. Acabar con todo apoyo que no impulse a un clúster a un nivel de competitividad que le sitúe entre los mejores del mundo.

En tiempos de palabrería vana, me ha sorprendido la eficacia quirúrgica del artículo. Resulta “estimulante”, ... como el bofetón de la Hayworth vestida de Gilda: sin preámbulos, … porque el contexto ya nos lo conocemos todos de memoria. Para no diluir su eficacia, os traslado un par de grandes ideas del artículo y os invito a que lo leáis.

El artículo plantea los “clusters” como elementos vitales de la nueva economía y como estrategia para replicar el modelo “Silicon Valey” en Europa. Pero la política de “clusters” europea se intuye amenazada por la arraigada querencia de la Unión de intentar contentar a todos los paises miembros (ni siquiera en igual medida, tendría que añadir yo), diluyendo con ello la intensidad del esfuerzo.

Los firmantes del artículo reclaman que se comience con prácticas de cultivo intensivo de “clusters”:No muchos, pequeños, mediocres y dispersos. Pocos, grandes, selectos y focalizados.

Aber leider geraten gerade bei dieser Lösung die für eine wirkliche HA Umgebung so wichtigen Rahmenbedingungen aus Kostengründen oder Unwissen oft in Vergessenheit.

Auch Microsoft definiert im Technet oftmals nur kurz und relativ ungenau wichtige Rahmenparameter zum Betrieb eines Clusters!

Mein Tip, setzt doch bei der Planung eines Clusters zuerst auf der Infrastruktur Ebene an, aus einer genauen Analyse ergibt sich dann meist recht schnell wie und ob es Sinn macht einzelne Services zu Clustern und welche folgekosten daraus entstehen.

Hier einige negativ Beispiele:

- Kunde X stellt nach der Inbetriebnahme fest das eine zusätzliche Lizenz für die Backuplösung zum Sichern eines Clusters erst ab 5.000€ zu haben ist...

- Kunde Y stellt während Wartungsarbeiten am Active Directory und dem DNS fest das zum Betrieb eines Clusters wohl eine saubere Implementation eines BDC sinvoll gewesen währe

- Kunde Z stellt während der Migration auf ein neues größeres SAN fest das auch der Cluster betroffen ist und hat vergessen die notwendigen Aufwände und Tasks mit zu planen

Now  i have never worked on any clustering software before now new much about it, turns out there are so many different types of clustering software available, the best in terms of popularity, ease, support, documentation  "seemed" to be openmosix, but as of March 2008 the project is dead, closed by its founder, Moshe Bar. Now reading about openmosix gave me little knowledge about SSI cluster's, meaning suppose i put up 4 machine's each with 4 processors and 4 gb ram and i set them up in a SSI cluster, what i get is something looking like one machine with 16 processors and 16gb ram, its true, i was able to do half the size of that cluster ( because that's how many machines i had in my hand to test ), now there might be many out there who have seen this before, but for me, after a really long time  I saw magic! . When i actually finally managed to get the cluster up and top command showed 8 cpus and 4gb ram, ( cluster of two pc's quadcore with 2gb ram each) , i just kept staring at it in awe, I swear it was so sexy i left it like that for one and a half day before i actually started testing dynamips on it.

The clustering software i finally ended up using was kerrighed, which  supports one of the newer kernels that is 2.6.20 the next in line would be openssi, which i think supports 2.6.9 or 2.6.12 im not sure right now. installing it took me 3 weeks that too after i gave up installing it on the quadcore machines and tried it on some p3 machines with realtek rtl8139 drivers. the next post will be an entire document on how to install kerrighed on the debian lenny system. The guys on the mailing list of Kerrighed as well as the developers of kerrighed are very helpful and were not irritated at all by my newbie questions, in fact i came out of it knowing a little more about linux, eg: i had never recompiled a kernel before. 

Well did dynamips work? NO! , that hurt, but then it's ok doing the entire exercise was fun, oh and the reason dynamips did'nt work was kerrighed does'nt support migration of multithreaded processes yet, i did check the migration with a program called cpuburn and it worked fine.  

Well hopefully  i might get some test machine's again and i could work out something , i also wanted to test cacti on it and see if that's a feasible option. hmm lets's see.

Come fare a capire se un'azienda produttrice di pupazzetti di peluche si è accordata con Radio Sbrandani Ovest per un cambio merci? Semplice: negli uffici di Radio Sbrandani Ovest gli impiegati passano ore a parlare con centinaia di simpatici amici immaginari, mentre in segreteria i clienti vengono accolti da un enorme orso bruno sistemato davanti alla reception. 

Gli spot devono durare rigorosamente 30 secondi. Non provate a chiedervi perchè. Pare che esistano diverse leggende metropolitane su misteriosi serial killer che girano di notte, per gli studi, a tagliare i secondi in eccesso dagli spot, perchè 30 secondi erano, 30 secondi sono, e 30 secondi saranno. 

Gli spot possono dire molto di una radio: ascoltateli attentamente e capirete come butta. Per una radio nazionale, trasmettere gli spot di centri commerciali della periferia di una singola città, o di piccole catene di negozi di una singola regione, non sarà come trasmettere gli spot di una grossa multinazionale. E ci siamo capiti. 

Gli spot locali, spesso, vengono realizzati seguendo una struttura comune. Due tizi si incontrano, uno ha un problema con un grado di complicazione che va dal semplice ("devo fare un regalo di compleanno") all'aberrante ("devo comprare mezzo bue muschiato per cena e non so proprio dove sbattere la testa"), e l'altro tizio, figurati, in due nanosecondi risolve il problema di una vita. 

Il top del top sono gli spot nazionali di un prodotto disponibile da un rivenditore locale: la radio locale trasmette lo spot nazionale, l'ascoltatore non fa in tempo a pensare però, questi devono essere importanti, sono una radio locale e hanno gli spot della Sbrandani Automobili, che lo spot finisce con una comunicazione registrata dallo speaker della radio locale (ciao piccola, sali su che ti faccio vedere gli studi) che ci ricorda che la nuova Sbrandani Turbo è in vendita da Sauro il Meccano Car, in via Squarraus 11, a Sbiadite di Sotto. 

La pubblicità sociale. Gli spot sociali sono quegli spot che le radio trasmettono per sensibilizzare gli ascoltatori su tematiche importanti che riguardano la comunità.

[Si dice che gli spot sociali vengano utilizzati da qualche emittente anche per prendere tempo in situazioni di emergenza o per imbottire cluster pubblicitari troppo magri in periodi di bassa stagione. Ecco, l'alta e la bassa stagione. Quando è alta, non va bene perchè è alta ("eh, ma che palle, ma quanta pubblicità c'è?"). Quando è bassa, non va bene perchè è bassa ("eh, ma che palle, ma non c'è pubblicita?!") quando è media, non va bene perchè è media ("eh, ma che palle, sta tornando la pubblicità"). Chi pronuncia questi elevati concetti, di solito dimentica che è grazie a quella pubblicità, tanta o poca che sia, che riesce a mettere insieme il pranzo con la cena.

Using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to study the dimmest stars in the cluster, astronomers uncovered three different age groups. Two of the populations are burned-out stars called white dwarfs. One group of these low-wattage stellar remnants appears to be 6 billion years old, another appears to be 4 billion years old. The ages are out of sync with those of the cluster's normal stars, which are 8 billion years old.

"The age discrepancy is a problem because stars in an open cluster should be the same age. They form at the same time within a large cloud of interstellar dust and gas. So we were really puzzled about what was going on," explained astronomer Luigi Bedin, who works at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md.

Ivan King of the University of Washington and leader of the Hubble study said: "This finding means that there is something about white dwarf evolution that we don't understand."

After extensive analysis, members of the research team realized how the two groups of white dwarfs can look different and yet have the same age. It is possible that the younger-looking group consists of the same type of stars, but the stars are paired off in binary-star systems, where two stars orbit each other. Because of the cluster's great distance, astronomers see the paired stars as a brighter single star.

"It is their brightness that makes them look younger," said team member Maurizio Salaris of Liverpool John Moores University in the United Kingdom.

Binary systems are also a significant fraction of the normal stellar population in NGC 6791, and are also observed in many other clusters. This would be the first time they have been found in a white-dwarf population.

"Our demonstration that binaries are the cause of the anomaly is an elegant resolution of a seemingly inexplicable enigma," said team member Giampaolo Piotto the University of Padova in Italy.

Bedin and his colleagues are relieved that they now have only two ages to reconcile: an 8-billion-year age of the normal stellar population and a 6-billion-year age for the white dwarfs. All that is needed is a process that slows down white-dwarf evolution, the researchers said.

Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys analyzed the cooling rate of the entire population of white dwarfs in NGC 6791, from brightest to dimmest. Most star clusters are too far away and the white dwarfs are too faint to be seen by ground-based telescopes, but Hubble's powerful vision sees many of them.

White dwarfs are the smoldering embers of Sun-like stars that no longer generate nuclear energy and have burned out. Their hot remaining cores radiate heat for billions of years as they slowly fade into darkness. Astronomers have used white dwarfs as a reliable measure of the ages of star clusters, because they are the relics of the first cluster stars that exhausted their nuclear fuel.

White dwarfs have long been considered dependable because they cool down at a predictable rate-the older the dwarf, the cooler it is, making it a seemingly perfect clock that has been ticking for almost as long as the cluster has existed.

NGC 6791 is one of the oldest and largest open clusters known, about 10 times larger than most open clusters and containing roughly 10,000 stars. The cluster is located in the constellation Lyra.

The first results appeared in the May 10 issue of The Astrophysical Journal, and the clarification about binaries was in the May 20 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Other members of the research team are Santi Cassisi of the Collurania Astronomical Observatory in Italy, and Jay Anderson, of the Space Telescope Science Institute.
