The new space is called Uptime and is run by one of our clients, Golden Capital Network. The Chico News & Review recently profiled the upcoming opening of the space, and guess who they included?

We all love dancing bananas and cartoon dogs dressed up like a dancing banana. This is just science.

We all love dancing bananas and cartoon dogs dressed up like a dancing banana. This is just science.

Another scientific truism that cannot be disputed is that we are all social animals, yes there is the occasional Ted Kaczynski, but even scientific truisms have their exceptions. Just as peanutbutter works better when collaborating with jelly, so too do people work better when collaborating.

Last Friday a small group of local entrepreneurs, many of whom are proud Net2NO members, set aside time from their busy schedules to take part in a social experiment. No, they did not join the cast of MTV's Real World, they met up at Annunciation Interactive for a unique co-working experience called Jelly. Like Net2NO, Jelly is a part of a larger movement, with offshoots popping up across the nation.

Jelly in their own words:

Jelly is casual coworking. We invite people to work from our home for the day. We provide chairs and sofas, wireless internet, and interesting people to talk to, collaborate with, and bounce ideas off of. You bring a laptop (or whatever you need to get work done) and a friendly disposition.

Watch this video about Jelly, or read about it in Wired,

Jelly started in NYC in February of 2006 when roommates Amit and Luke realized that they loved working from home, but they missed the creative brainstorming, sharing, and camaraderie of a traditional office. (Office politics, not so much.)

So they started inviting friends to come work from their home one day a week. They soon found that working in close proximity to new and interesting people every couple weeks resulted in new ideas and interesting conversations.Emboldened by their early success, they made it a more regular thing. Jelly was born.

Back in D.C., I was an independent consultant with a shared office space in a downtown highrise. Translation, I worked from home with my dog. While border collies are highly intelligent, I quickly found he wasn't much help with brainstorming. Enter Affinity Labs. Affinty Labs was the Jelly concept in D.C., and was the permanent home of the Net2D.C. Tuesday meetings.

Sometimes working in a huge office with hundreds of employees can be just as lonely and brainnumbing as working from home alone. The Jelly concept allows people, even from completely different industry's to share more than just an office space and wi-fi connection. For more info on the next place and time, or to sign up to kindly share your office space with the world, check out the New Orleans Jelly Wiki.

[caption id="attachment_54" align="alignleft" width="225" caption="Alex @ Indy Hall's opening"][/caption]

Congratulations to Alex Hillman, Geoff DiMasi, and Bart Mroz* on the 1st anniversary of Indy Hall!! (* - Yes, Bart has officially stepped down but he really stepped up in the formative days of Indy Hall)

I was fortunate to meet Alex Hillman back in September of 2006 at the 1st CreativeCamp. CC was organized by CMAccess to bring the success of the BarCamp to Philly. Kristin Motta, the co-founder of CMAccess who impressed me as an amazing brilliant confident individual, introduced Alex, an amazing brilliant confident individual with piercings, at the first CreativeCamp in Philly.

Kristin introduced Alex's talk with the most enthusiasm and expectation of the day - saying that what he was going to talk about was awesome. Co-working. Co-working in Philly. I don't remember what he said - it's been too long - but you could tell this kid was passionate. Co-working seemed brilliant, simple but not easy. I do remember Lauren Galanter demonstrating her wicked creative brilliance by coming up with the perfect name on the spot that combined co-working and the spirit of Philly.

After the talk, since Alex asked for help finding the right space, I emailed Alex about following up with a guy who did commercial real estate that I had met through triathlons. That follow-up went nowhere. I lost touch, as I usually do.

Then, about a year later, in late summer of 2007, I was stunned and happy to read in the Philadelphia Inquirer about the impending grand opening of Indy Hall, the very next day. Alex Hillman had gone and done it. So many people have a big idea - how many people make it so... I had underestimated Alex. In fact, even now, I'm not sure how to estimate Alex. I logged into LinkedIn the other day and one of the suggested contacts was this Alex Hillman guy (and I only have a handful of LinkedIn contacts!)

I went to the grand opening to congratulate Alex. And to tell him, in awe and astonishment, that he pulled it off. I was surprised that he remembered who I was. Tara Hunt and Chris Messina of Citizen Space were there to support Alex, as well. I didn't know how important they were to Indy Hall's opening until afterwards. Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine.TV, an extrovert's extrovert, was also there. Yet, he was a relative wallflower at the party much - it was Alex's day, he didn't take the spotlight, just wore his 'Local Celebrity' shirt.

At the 1st anniversary party, watching the IndyHall community mingle and party, I couldn't help but think that it *might* have been possible for maybe a few of the IndyHall members to have met in random, serendipitous real world circumstances... and with the founding of IndyHall - their connecting and meeting became *inevitable*

About once-a-month I go to Indy Hall to co-work (hopefully Dana's cupcake Thursdays!). I am intrigued by the people. As someone who is (for now) ensconced in the comfort of his day job, I find it inspiring to be able to hang out (for the day) and be in the company of creative/freelance/entrepreneurial types. Someday. Thank you to Indy Hall for letting me hang out in the club house, even though I keep myself only tangentially involved.

Yesterday, Peter Chee of thinkspace green office suites and co-working space, signed on as a client.

Yesterday, Peter Chee of thinkspace green office suites and co-working space, signed on as a client. I am very excited to be doing decorating for this amazing green space! He's got the bare bones complete there and is ready for some decorative accents, "warming" treatments and embellishments in the co-working, conference and upstairs waiting spaces. He said:

I'm looking forward to implementing some of your unoffice ideas into my own space inside thinkspace. I'm also looking forward to the creative ideas you are coming up with for thinkspace. You're a rockstar Amy!

A happy client is definitely a good thing!

Peter Chee is the brains behind thinkspace, the first green office suite rental and co-working space, located in the heart of Redmond. He remodeled the interiors of this lovely brick building to fit LEED certifications, including recycling materials that were removed during the remodel process.

Peter is as delightful to talk to as thinkspace is to be in. He is warm in spirit and his passion for green shows in the care and thought that was put into creating thinkspace.

Colors alternate between warm and earthy, and bright and vibrant. Each outer wall office has a large window for natural lighting, with a window panel in the hallway wall to bring the natural light through. Each inner wall office also has a window panel on the hall wall for natural lighting. It was always my personal pet peeve in the days of office work when I had no natural lighting or window. Peter has done well in caring for this matter.

One of my other fave features is the copier with eco ink and 100% post consumer recyled content copy paper from Staples! WOOHOO!

Of course they have a shower for bike commuters, awesome fair trade coffee, sensor operated lights and even sensor operated vending machines! Larger and smaller conference rooms are also available. Even the furniture is eco!

So, if you've been looking for that green office space to rent or for a green co-working space, thinkspace has got you covered, with no markup in cost, just because it's green. Peter understands that his costs will recoup over time with the cost savings that green remodels are known bring over time.

The EcoKind treatment will be done in time for thinkspace's first Biznik event on August 19th!

For more info: Visit the thinkspace website.

There are some things that are just trendy and really shouldn’t be questioned. Like ‘doing coffee’. Ever wondered why it’s called that when often it’s tea or perhaps a double thick chocolate milkshake with extra chocolate sprinkles that people order? And I’m certainly guilty of that. Me, someone who doesn’t even drink the stuff, still manages to ‘do’ coffee on the odd occasion.

--------------

And in this world of all things trendy where tea-drinkers ‘do’ coffee it’s time to make room for the coffee-shop lurkers. For they are the latest in all things trendy. And we’ve all spotted at least one of these lurkers. They are the people who sit alone and are not surreptitious about it, how can they be?

-----------------

A coffee-shop lurker will be found accompanied only by laptop or any other portable desk item and that one cup of coffee that seems to be on auto-top up. And this is what these coffee-shop lurking individuals call work? Sitting in coffee shops all day.

--------------------

For someone who ‘does coffee’, this was an opportunity not to be missed so I decided to try it out for myself. It was a Friday and I had some work, nothing too taxing, nothing I thought couldn’t be done while I sipped on some Lipton Lemon Ice tea. So off I went to Mad Hatters, one the local coffee shops, to claim my corner table.

----------

My lap-top has seen me through many assignments. But the truth is that it is a veteran with its own imposing black carry case that really could be carrying anything. Few would probably guess a laptop. But that’s step one on how to be a successful coffee-shop lurker: make a grand entry. Be noticed. No coffee-shop lurker wants to just fade into the background.

-------------

So, things were going well. I had the imposing, briefcase-like bag which caught people’s attention when I began unzipping it – it’s difficult to miss. Then there was the loud greeting sound my laptop makes when I turn it on. More attention for me. This was almost too simple.

--------------

But my trendiness lasted just under 2 hours. See, not only did I leave my laptop battery at home, a huge coffee-shop lurker faux pas, but I would look up every time someone walked into or out of or past the shop. To be honest, any movement distracted me.

----------------------

Maybe that was because I wasn’t doing it right. It seems those in the know, those who are ultra trendy, don’t bother with coffee shops. They simply rent space in other people’s living rooms. Sure it costs more than a coffee. But it beats renting an office and on top of it all you get to do your work while in the comfort of a stranger’s living room. And if you’re lucky you may even get a cup of coffee:

---------

They also sprout up as and when they are needed with various wikis which help organize co-working meet-ups. Then there are services like Jelly which describes itself as “a semi-weekly work-together” where people are encouraged to set up casual working sessions called Jellies. There are Jellies happening all over the world. There is also Cream Cheese which functions in a similar way to Jelly. Let’s hope these co-working sessions have more than food on their minds. Another interesting service is Cubes and Crayons which provides both co-working and child care space. Now you can work flexi hours and still find time to spend with your kids.

-------------

Co-working functions in a similar way to a sewing or knitting group. You come. You work on your own project. Perhaps you grab lunch, get some encouragement and a little nudge in the right direction from someone in the group who may have more specialized skills than you. And then you leave. No mess. No fuss. And no office politics.

a reminder that while we each pursue on own projects and engagements, that we are not on this journey alone. While we retain the freedom and flexibility of working solo, it is great to have others to bounce ideas off of, to celebrate wins, to commiserate about setbacks, to plot pitches. In short, to function as virtual coworkers without the inter-office politics.

Doesn’t this sound great? No more 9 to 5. No more air-conditioned offices. But I’m still not convinced. Okay, so my experience as a coffee shop lurker was bound to fail. Next time I will invite others to join me. I’ll be more social. Maybe even do coffee.

-------------

Or maybe I should just join Less Distracted, a co-working group. They have an open space and that might help keep my focused but still trendy. Perhaps you should be doing the same. For it’s likely that your working lifestyle will change over the next few years and that co-working is going to feature quite prominently as part of it.

The third placement was billed as the one which would through up interesting working arrangements

The third placement was billed as the one which would through up interesting working arrangements... for a start, I would be based with Stef in his apartment, with his 18 month old daughter and his partner Emily. The apartment is also a studio for baby shoots meaning that work has to fit around the multitude of other things happening. The first two placements were regular 9-5:30 roles, so its actually a breath of fresh air to have a irregular routine, it encourages a very productive way of working.

However, to keep things fresh, Stef and I have been doing a lot of Co-Working. This is basically a group of individuals who usually work alone coming together in a new place, sharing ideas over coffee, and generally 'mixing things up a little'. Its a growing trend across Europe and the states, and of late, the production team for Stef's new idea have been getting a lot of work done outside of the office.

There are obviously a few requirements for this to be effective... Free Wifi, a comfortable setting with ample supply of coffee and cakes, and somewhere where it it is quiet enough to take a phone call if needs be, or at least pop outside to be able to do so. I have found a few great places in Birmingham over the past few weeks, and as I've mentioned, breaking from routine has actually led to some very productive days.

The Central Library is quiet and you can pick up the McFreeWifi from downstairs if you sit on the right side of the first two floors (I used the iphone to search for the network before setting up). There is a great little place in Kings Heath, the Kitchen Garden Cafe, where you can also pick up some greenery to brighten your garden (or balcony in my case). We spent today working in the restaurant at Malmaison. This was a really nice space, but we only got 6 hours of internet access before the system kicked us out. I have also found that Cafe Bebo, at Paradise Forum. The also offer 15% student and OAP discount... Places like Starbucks and some of the bars in Brindleyplace also offer the hotspot facility, so these are other options.

I am sure that there are plenty of other places around the city, and with new free wifi being offered almost every day, I am sure that Co-Working will continue to be a popular way of breaking from the norm. I've found it great, it just breaks the day and even if you do work in a regular office, there is nothing better than a change of scenery when you need to focus. I know that the creative community of Birmingham are frequent Co-Workers, but perhaps it should be something that other sectors consider, it could provide positive benefits...

Memorial Day came and went. Sidenote: I still cannot believe that it is June! Here in the Northeast, and more specifically in the beachside communities of South County, we are readying ourselves for the onslaught of tourists and beach-goers. Most of our local businesses and restaurants are looking forward to it because even with the speculation that the ever rising price of gas will stagnate vacationers this summer, little Rhody always seems to escape that drought by remaining a quick, affordable, yet beautiful destination on the Northeast Corridor.

What this means to me, in addition to having to bring my A-Game and perm-a-grin to my part-time bartending position, is TRAFFIC and even MORE GAS to escape south to the more remote beaches to avoid these "welcomed" guests. (See Nick's May blog: New England Hospitality) I HEART my Jeep, but as a proud Prius owner boasted about getting more than 40 miles per gallon to me last night, I was left less than pleased at my 20-something miles per gallon (I admit this could be my driving) and I began thinking of ways to curb the expenditure and aggravation.

Working from home - Caster is extremely flexible, this however, is not an option.

Co-working - The fabulous new trend that has begun in San Francisco and Boston where like professionals meet at shared offices to facilitate the flow of ideas while equally sustaining motivation. Apparently we here in Rhody are a little behind the curve because in a desperate search to find such a solution, I investigated, but to no avail.

Public Transportation - Not in Rhode Island. No subway, no T. There is the bus. From experience however, I can assure you that travelling across the state from Providence to South County twice a day on the bus will not help my cause in terms of time nor aggravation. For blog-worthy stories, this may help.

Carpool - Great in theory, however Caster's ‘flex-hours' of operation make it virtually impossible to organize with the one other slacker co-worker who lives "North of the "Towers" and works the later shift.

And finally I arrive at BIKE. After much consideration and taking a cue from the cyclist I currently date, I thought, I can commute via bicycle. Get my daily cardio workout in, unwind from work, all while enjoying the sights and smells of the beautiful summer months...GENIUS! Unfortunately my initially seamless plan has since fallen apart due to a cycling mishap over Memorial Day weekend. On a gorgeous day with blue skies and 70 degree weather my date rides from Boston to Providence (over 50 miles) in 40 mph headwinds to arrive more than two hours late for a family picnic. Definitely NOT a stellar excuse for being late to work.

This my friends, is why we drive cars when we need to be on time. Back to square one.

Back when broadband Internet access was made available to homes in the late 1990’s, teleworkin

Back when broadband Internet access was made available to homes in the late 1990's, teleworking took off. In businesses, employees were allowed to work from home part time (in some cases, full time) and many home based businesses took off, allowing small time entrepreneurs to have a low-cost launching point for their great idea.

Then, reality set in. Working from your home can be isolating and can result in feeling cut off from the working world. Co-working is a new trend, as recently reported by CNN and others, which involves teleworkers gathering within the same physical space in order to have some social time while working on their tasks. There are businesses such as CubeSpace and Citizen Space that make co-working easy by offering space for co-workers to gather, however what is a web worker to do if they don't have this type of option close by?

Do It Yourself

Most teleworkers likely know someone who also works remotely from their office. If you feel comfortable doing this, offer to host a co-working session at your house or other meeting space. Much in the same way moms self-organize play dates, teleworkers will gain benefit by gathering to work together on an occasional basis. In exchange for offering up your Wi-Fi connection and a making a few pots of coffee, you'll be able to exchange ideas and make some potentially profitable business connections. For example, by gathering with other bloggers or programmers, I often gain story ideas and other opportunities I would otherwise not come across.

Break Out Of Your Shell

If you see the same people routinely at your Starbucks, engage with them in a conversation to see if they'd like to make it a regular meeting time. This might be a great way to meet teleworkers who don't necessarily work in your field. Additionally, by meeting at a Starbucks or your local pub, you can use the hosting business' Wi-Fi and avoid the effort of hosting a co-working session at your house.

Tools to Aid You

To organize a group of co-working professionals, you can either:

Start a website: build a web site to serve as the communication hub.

Initiate a Google Group: Drop dead easy way to centralize communications, however everyone will need a Google Account

Simply start an email mailing list

Check out the Co-Working wiki page as it has many valuable resources.

NOTE: This is a co-authored post with insights and thoughts from @ludwigvan968 and myself

After having read many blogs and tweets about shared work spaces and start up districts, we have to say we are invigorated by this movement. We are unique in our position as we are observers - not necessarily full-fledged participants. It has been with great interest that we have watched groups of individuals meet at Austin Jelly to discuss the formation of shared work spaces and a start up "district". For those new to the conversation, we encourage you to check out John-Erik's "What If Austin had a Start-up District..the story thus far?"

But, the concept is not new, as it has been heavily pursued in other "creative class" towns such as San Francisco and New York (RIP CitizenDesk), but the bringing of this movement to Austin is an attractive space for Austin cultured entrepreneurs, the "web 3.0 kids" as Joey likes to call them. Their idealism, ability to look past corporate culture and want to create an "open source" space where people come together and share ideas, resources, talent and physical space is inspiring (Joey- Especially being from San Antonio where spaces like Jelly do not exist, let alone plans for a workspace).

However, as has been noted by past initiatives and even current ones, this task is not without its difficulties and trials. For our fellow Austin Entrepreneurs, we know we must ask the tough questions. And here they are:

-What about intellectual property?

-How do we know where ideas and knowledge originate when working in such a group?

-How will having a physical space be beneficial for the participates (i.e. Austin Entrepreneurs) and the market in general?

These are just a few of the questions we would like to pose. Our rationalization for these questions come from many conversations and interactions we have had with people who have participated and/or created shared work spaces. One key example is the Intellectual Property issue. This is a classic situation where friends come together to work in a physical space through either academic, corporate or purely social reasons. The synergy that is created often leads everyone to be very excited and to look toward to the future. This period is referred to by many as the "honey moon" stage of start-ups, everyone is excited about the "idea" the sharing of knowledge and the lack of constraints and the endless possibilities.

However, this stage often comes to a close with many people's feet and hands stepped on; because in the end, when you take a a group of people from being a "community of makers" with little or no fiscal worth and then introduce a large amount fiscal potential, you begin to create a space where things like "amount of work", "amount of effort", "quality of work", "commitment" and other lingo begins to start flying around. No longer is it about "coming up with ideas" but a discussion of "how do we make money on this and who receives what percentages?". This next stage can also be referred to as the "closing of the box", this is normally where your community begins to become more and more closed, the people with their success share it amongst themselves and others begin to be left out.

And this is where we would like to cut this story short. This story can go in many directions from there, but the one we are hoping that our new found Shared Work spaces figure out is how they get said communities/companies to give back to the space and re-invest in the sustainability of the group. At a Jelly meeting we talked about this issue, however it was not clearly addressed. And while we already understand there are fiscal solutions to such issues, how do we deal with social and cultural problems that will arise from the success and un-successful ventures in such a community? How will such a group keep new talent coming in and successful ventures involved with helping such a community?

It is without doubt that building a community, like a start up district, is better than going at it alone. We cannot dismiss the benefits that other's have noted. (NYT: They're Working on their own, just side by side) Heck, we know two minds are better than one, right? - this collaborative post is a testament to that.

Office Nomads is a co-working space in Capital Hill at Harvard and Pine. Great space with old brick walls and a variety of conference room sizes and rooms to conduct business. You can rent space by the hour, day or month!

Co-founders Jacob Sayles and Susan Evans did a great job of putting the reuse concept to work, acquiring furniture from various sources for their second life with Office Nomads and thus helping sustain the resources of our planet.

I provided some minor re-design in the layout of their main space. Originally, the desks were arranged the way most of us would arrange things - straight across, linear and parallel to walls, etc. In reviewing the space, I noticed the diagonal lines of the lighting above and immediately, the following idea popped.

By arranging the desks diagonally, not only did it bring a more interesting look to the room arrangement, it played off the diagonal lines of the lighting, bringing a different sense of cohesion to the room design.

before: desks were parallel and perpendicular

after: desks on diagonal play off lighting diagonal

No, you're not imagining that there is more furniture in the After shot! Before images were taken prior to more placement of furniture. Still, you get the idea of parallel vs. diagonal, yes?

Remember, things don't always have to be parallel and perpendicular to walls! Try arranging things in curves and diagonals too. You might find a new look for your space in the process!

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Alex Hillman of Phildelphia coworking space, IndyHall,

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Alex Hillman of Phildelphia coworking space, IndyHall, about finding your niche as an owner of coworking space and than reaching that niche. Coworking spaces vary greatly in their audience. While coworking is about openness and community, each space has its own character and appeals to different groups. Alex wisely pointed out that each space has to build its community in order to be successful.

The face time is absolutely key to the success of any coworking community. There have been several posts recently on the google group about advertising, running events and building membership. To create the community that gets people in the door, you absolutely must put in the faceup. Alex tells a great tale about all the meetups he went to for a month or two before he even signed a lease. In his words, he was looking for "cool, interesting people who might also work from home." He spread the coworking idea, got interested members, and then signed the lease and got up and running. Of course, we all want successes like Alex.

Finding that niche that is the right audience for your group requires more than just connecting through blogs, online groups, and cyberspace, you need to talk to the people you think will use your space. And you may discover that you don't always know who will use your space. I was confident our primary members of Cubes&Crayons would be entrepreneurs. As of today, our membership, with the exception of myself, completely lacks entrepreneurs. We have freelance workers in all walks of life from medical translators to biotech researchers to recruiters to professors. It had been a pleasant surprise to find that the common thread comes from the atmosphere we have created more than their careers. We provide a professional and inspirational coworking space. We have new members come in because they are impressed with how much they get done and how much they enjoy working at Cubes & Crayons. And of course, one of my personal favorites is the praise for the free gourmet chocolates available in our kitchen.

In building our community, although word of mouth has been tremendous and we have had some good press (more to come...look for it this weekend), the best marketing has involved simply a conversation. Whether I am talking about coworking to fellow volunteers at a board meeting or hosting a meetup or event at Cubes & Crayons, or going out to meetups and organization's events, the best marketing is when I tell people about our site, my story, and/or our clients. People are interested in people. Forget that you are "selling" your service. It is about getting people connected to other people in a great community that somewhere has a common thread. We are hosting a blogging day on April 11th to encourage bloggers to come and blog in our space as well as share blogging stories and ideas with each other. I'll let you know how it goes.

Welcome to DyVERSE Creative Space! Our mission is create a physical office environment where creative people gather, work, think and dream together. We have created this blog as a way to keep everyone who is interested informed about the movement. The organizers of DyVERSE Creative Space (DyVERSE Marketing Group, Inc.) are currently seeking to obtain suitable office digs in downtown Orlando to house creative types including graphic artists, web designers/developers, copywriters, photographers, digital media artists, internet strategists, video producers, marketing/advertising professionals and anyone else that would be interested in joining the community. The coworking set-up will allow for individuals to access the shared space as much as they see fit. The space will make room for anchor tenants who will have reserved office and desk space, and there will also be options for those just looking to enjoy the creative environment on a part time or occasional basis. All partakers will also have access to shared amenities such as meeting/conference rooms, wifi access, and more. Please stay tuned for updates that will be coming soon! If you are interested in any information about DyVERSE Creative Space please contact John Todero at john@dyversemarketing.com.

I recently read a post about coworking being a generational thing for the millenials. True, maybe?

I recently read a post about coworking being a generational thing for the millenials. True, maybe? But for those of you hanging out in the coworking places, is everyone a millenial? Not even close. The founders of most of these coworking sites are smart entrepreneurs who are beyond the millenial age, at least chronologically. Just look at the photos from events at places such as IndyHall and Citizen Space and you notice that coworkers have embraced a common philosophy regardless of birth age. At Cubes&Crayons, we have coworkers, coworkers with young kids, and coworkers whose kids have long out grown our space.

What occurred to me is that coworking is generational if you change your definition. Coworking is about this "generation" of people altering the perception of "professional," "work environment," "colleague," etc. It is about hip people writing their own ticket for work. Coworkers are skilled individuals who are prepared to be part of the global community. They are interested in programs that are developing like PACTFund, where they can exchange their skills with other people's skills.

And businesses need to be aware of and adapt to this changing workforce. I have been researching this avenue quite a bit and as much as "coworking" is hip and trendy, it is smart and necessary in our changing economy. When software engineers end up doing business with colleagues halfway across the world, what's to motivate them to come into a traditional office? Isn't it more interesting for them to be in a coworking space where they can meet people in all walks of life? Businesses will be getting educated if they want to survive and stay competitive. It is just a matter of time before this "generation" of coworkers changes the way businesses do business.

I was recently reading Alex Hillman’s post on co-working as an extension of that great online community coworkers have created. I love his “full circle” concept. It really brought the feeling we are trying to create with the people together in my head.

In hindsight, we should have been building this online circle for Cubes&Crayons long before we signed our lease and opened our doors. But we didn’t. We worked hard on building a website and finding furnishings and creating a look and feel. We have it all off line, but opened almost empty. Ooops! But hindsight is a great if at times costly learning experience. After spending all this time reading blogs and being part of numerous online groups, I truly understand it. I feel immersed in it online and love the concept of bringing that online synergy to the real space. It is an incredible adventure. The synergy is the essence of co-working spaces and what makes them truly great. In some strange way, it reminds me of the ancient days. With all of this technology connecting us, we are able to work/live anywhere and need that in person contact even more.
