–Appoints New General Manager for its Japanese Subsidiary

Broadband video publishing solution

--Appoints New General Manager for its Japanese Subsidiary

Broadband video publishing solutions provider, Brightcove, has announced a number of new deals over the past few weeks, including three in the UK (a market which it has been targeting over the past few months and where its existing customers include BSkyB, Channel 4, Emap, Guardian News & Media, Hachette Filipacchi, IPC Media, ITV, Sony BMG, Telegraph Media Group and UKTV):

The company says that the UK Prime Minister's Office (colloquially known as "10 Downing Street") has selected its platform to make more video available through the official government Web site, Number10.gov.uk. As part of this initiative, 10 Downing Street has launched a new broadband video channel, Number10TV (www.number10.gov.uk/number-10-tv), which features exclusive video of the UK prime minister's speeches, press conferences and media appearances, as well as news archives. According to Brightcove, its on- demand platform will allow 10 Downing Street to publish video content for Number10.gov.uk and Number10TV, manage video distribution through search engines and social networks, and collect and publish user-generated video. The company also says that, over the coming months, 10 Downing Street plans to use its platform to launch additional broadband video services. "10 Downing Street has a reputation for embracing new technologies that increase the flow of information between the Prime Minister's Office and the British population," Brightcove founder, chairman and CEO, Jeremy Allaire, said in a prepared statement. "We are honored that Brightcove has been chosen as the online video platform for 10 Downing Street and to help support communication that is essential to having an active and engaged citizenry."

The company has been tapped by UK terrestrial broadcaster, Five, to power advertising-supported broadband video across its various online properties. The first Five-owned Web sites to launch Brightcove-powered video as part of the deal include sites devoted to the shows, "Five News with Natasha Kaplinsky," "Football Italiano," and "Neighbors." The companies say that, under the terms of their deal, any Five Web site producer can easily take advantage of the Brightcove online video platform to program video content, create Flash-based video players for their sites, target advertising into the content, and access detailed analytics on viewing behavior. Five says it will use the platform to offer promotional clips and highlights, Web site exclusives, and user-generated videos for special news features. "Five is moving aggressively to provide greater online access to popular television programming and answer the demand from a fast-growing audience across our Web site properties," Paul Thornton-Jones, Five's digital controller, said in a prepared statement. "With Brightcove, Five has been able to rapidly bring to market an enormous volume of online video content, while spawning new revenue streams through online video advertising." According to Brightcove, Five plans to use its platform to launch a range of broadband video channels later this year.

Home-shopping channel, QVC UK, has tapped the company to power a broadband VOD service, dubbed QVC On Demand, that allows viewers to access video clips devoted to an individual product and organized by product category; to catch up with the last seven days of full-length QVC UK programs; and to view programs that have been custom-produced for the QVC UK Web site. QVC UK says that the service is fully integrated with its real-time business systems, and that, in order to buy products featured on the service, customers simply press a "Buy Now" button while watching a product video. Other features offered by the service include the ability to watch videos in full-screen mode, to email video links to a friend, and to access customer ratings and reviews of featured products. "With a wealth of video content available from our 17 hours of live television daily, QVC On Demand is a natural extension to our Web site, allowing customers to watch what they want when they want," Paul Murphy, head of media technology at QVC UK, said in a prepared statement. "Brightcove's online video delivery platform enables us to not only build on the success of the services already available but also reach new viewers."

The company has formed what it describes as a "wide-ranging partnership" with OMS, an online sales and marketing network for German regional newspapers, that will see it powering a broadband video network for OMS's member-publications. The network is slated to feature premium content from news agencies and other sources that has been licensed and is distributed by OMS, as well as local video published by the newspapers themselves; OMS will sell advertising against the combined video inventory, thereby providing a new revenue stream for its member papers, the companies say. At launch, seven regional newspapers across Germany will participate in the online video network (note: OMS says it plans to roll the network out to around 60 newspapers over the coming months): the companies say that their deal will provide Web producers from each of those papers with full access to Brightcove's platform for publishing OMS's national video and the papers' own local video. Brightcove says that its platform will allow the producers to fully customize the look-and-feel of its Flash-based video players, access rich analytics on viewing behavior, and collect and distribute video clips submitted by visitors to their papers' Web sites. "The deal announced today with Brightcove has given OMS the ability to rapidly launch an expansive video distribution network across multiple Web sites and manage a complex set of advertising programs," Kim Kriegers, who is heading up the OMS broadband video project, said in a prepared statement. Added Georg Hesse, OMS's managing director: "At the same time, OMS is giving member newspapers access to the most comprehensive and scalable platform in the world which they will be able to use to add premium video content to their Web sites from the network and publish regional news coverage produced by their local newsrooms. Our objectives are to collectively capitalize on the revenue growth in the online advertising categories of videos."

The company's majority-owned Japanese subsidiary, Brightcove KK (which launched earlier this year with $4.9 million of backing from Dentsu, J-Stream, transcosmos and Cyber Communications--see [itvt] Issue 7.87 Part 1), has named Hisashige Hashimoto general manager. He will be tasked with leading Brightcove's operations in Japan and with targeting customer acquisition efforts at Japanese media companies and marketers. He was previously president and CEO of Paygent, a mobile auction escrow service that he launched in 2006 and that grew to 2,000 customers. Prior to that, he served in three senior management positions at Macromedia KK, helping lead its Education, Channel Marketing and Platform Product Marketing divisions; and, before that, he spent 14 years at Mitsui & Co. Brightcove KK was recently tapped by broadband video distribution company, PresentCast (note: the latter, which was founded in 2006, is a joint venture between various major Japanese broadcasters and advertising agencies), to power gorin.jp, a Beijing Olympics broadband video portal that is backed by all Japan's commercial broadcasters. The portal, which was available through September 23rd, offered around 200 ad-supported video segments.

–Taps End-Users to Improve Metadata for its Videos
–Teams with Universal on “Colla

--Taps End-Users to Improve Metadata for its Videos
--Teams with Universal on "Collaborative Remix" Promotion for "Heroes"
--Enables End-Users to Personalize its Videos

Broadband video site, Metacafe, is tapping its end-users to help improve the metadata associated with its video offerings. The company is inviting end-users to add and improve tags, titles, descriptions and more for any of the videos on its site, via a new feature called Wikicafe that the company says is designed to eliminate tag abuse and improve video search and recommendations. "A video with incomplete or inaccurate metadata is like a book without a cover--you don't know what it's about, which shelf it belongs on, or who's most likely to enjoy it," Eyal Hertzog, Metacafe's founder and chief creative officer, said in a prepared statement. "Simply put, we live by the mantra: "It's the metadata, stupid!'"

According to the company, Wikicafe is designed to allow people to share their knowledge of specific topics by adding details about the content of a video: thus a dog lover could tag a video with the correct name of the breed the video features, or a world traveler could add background about the location in which a video is set, the company says. Metacafe says that the application should enable it to assemble a rich database of video information that will make it easier for end-users to discover the videos that interest them. In addition, Wikicafe allows end-users to change misleading tags, correct spelling errors, and edit metadata in various other ways: to open the application, they simply click "Edit Video Details" on any Metacafe video page, and their updates are immediately reflected on the site. The app, which is built on the MediaWiki platform, supports six languages in addition to English: Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Italian and Spanish. According to Metacafe, it was in beta testing for four months before its launch last month.

In other Metacafe news:

The company recently teamed with Universal Studios Home Entertainment on a "collaborative remix" promotion that invited its end-users to create their own original "Heroes Moment" remix of the eponymous primetime drama series, using video and audio clips from the show, and also to further enhance remixes created by other end-users. The service was powered by a collaborative online video editor from Kaltura. The remixes it generated were located on a dedicated area of Metacafe's site: after watching a remix, end-users were invited to "Join the Heroes" by adding to the remix they had just watched or by creating their own from scratch. They could also rank other end-users' remixes, and email links to their own remixes to their friends. "Fans of 'Heroes' are avid entertainment enthusiasts who welcome the opportunity to stretch their own creative muscles by making a remix showcasing their favorite characters and moments from the second season," Metacafe CEO, Erick Hachenburg, said in a prepared statement. "By enabling this to be a truly collaborative endeavor, we're not only enriching the shared fan experience, we're helping Universal Studios Home Entertainment put the power of social media to work in enlisting consumers as brand ambassadors."

The company recently launched a feature that allows its end-users to personalize their experience of its videos by adding dialog bubbles, photos, Webcam video, clip art, subtitles and more to online videos, and then to save their customized versions of those videos for viewing by other Metacafe users or for sending to their friends via email. The feature is enabled by a toolkit, called PLYfx, from a company called PLYmedia, which specializes in tools that enable interactive enhancement of Web video. "The power of online video centers on the ability for viewers to interact with content and control their own entertainment experiences," Metacafe's Hertzog said in a prepared statement. "This toolkit builds on these core principles and makes it easy for everyone to stretch their creative muscles and produce videos that reflect their original ideas, personal style and mood of the moment. This is yet another way we're breaking down the barriers to creative expression and infusing more fun into social media." In order to use the new service, which is currently in beta, registered Metacafe users first go to an area of the site where they click on an "Enable PLYfx" button. Then, when they are watching a video, they can click on a PLYfx button that appears in the upper left corner of the video player and that activates a drop-down menu which leads them through the process of personalization. In addition to allowing end-users to share their personalized videos by email, the application allows them to embed their creations directly in another Web site. Each new PLYfx-created video is assigned a unique URL, so that it can be promoted elsewhere. "Lots of people have ideas they'd love to bring to life in video, but the process of shooting, editing and uploading a video is still fairly time-consuming and labor-intensive," PLYmedia CEO, Ben Enosh, said in a prepared statement. "Our platform makes it quick and easy for people to bring their creative visions to life by building on existing videos. This creativity toolkit encourages more participation, cooperation and interaction among members of the Metacafe community--enhancing both the individual and shared entertainment experience."

Asal jangan minum tolak angin.. hahaha

Asalkan kita tahu kuncinya.. Mau tahu? Ini dia 3 point yang harus anda perhatikan dalam menjalankan google adsense:

Ternyata untuk bisa sukses di google adsense, dasarnya adalah keywords, content dan traffic.

Keyword = kata kunci

Content = isi

Traffic = jumlah pengunjung

How would I define success? For starters, I wouldn’t describe it in one definitive statement.
Muc

How would I define success? For starters, I wouldn’t describe it in one definitive statement.

Much like ‘love,’ each person has their own experiences, and therefore, has their own way of describing it.

For me, success is a feeling you’ve done well at something- whether it be large or small- no matter what, you still feel that sense of achievement. You want to just pat yourself on the back (when not in public)

You see, we live in a society where success is generally judged by status (job) or material wealth which then leads to discontent within ourselves when those things aren’t achieved. If you don’t have a great career, X amount of wealth, a house etc..you are not considered successful. People tend to dismiss their other achievements to instead keep up with “the Jonses” which is only competing with everyone else. Success is not pursued, it is attracted as ability may get you to the top, but your “character and attitude” will keep you there.

So what’s the solution?

A change in your way of thinking and attitude about your life and surroundings. Sounds simple doesn’t it? For some it may just be, but for others this process may take years depending on their habits, experiences, cultural backgrounds and childhood conditioning.

One step is to change you definition of success NOW. Try not to compare your achievement with those of others. Be grateful about for what you have achieved no matter how small. It may be the following:

- Keeping your household budget for the week

- Turning up to work early for a whole month instead of running late

- You were able to resist that takeaway coffee urge each day which has now saved you thousands each year or that packet of chips which you would have regretted anyways

- You made someone laugh or smile

You see, the more I feel I am continually achieving success, the more it is coming my way. Also, consider every failure as an opportunity to become a better person and to learn rather than letting it get the best of you. We all make mistakes, it’s how you overcome the adversity that determines your life.

Start with small steps until this becomes a habit.
Use HTML Links that Search Engine Bots can Follow
To help search engines find all of your website

Use HTML Links that Search Engine Bots can Follow

To help search engines find all of your website's webpages it is important that you provide their bots with a path to the webpages using HTML links. Search engine bots currently cannot read JavaScript links, Flash links or form drop-down menu links and by using these types of navigation you will prevent your webpages from being indexed. It is best to structure your navigation well and provide top level and sub-level HTML navigation links relevant to each section of your website.

Site Map Alternative

If (for some obscure reason) it is not possible to use HTML links within your main website then you should provide users and search engines with a HTML site map alternative that provides a list of links to all the webpages within your website. Search engine bots automatically look for site maps when they visit a website so providing this service will only benefit the indexing of your webpages.

Cross-Link Pages to Help Pass Relevancy and Pagerank

Search engines give more weight (PageRank as Google names it) to pages that are nearer to the top level of your website than pages tucked away in some remote location. This weight can help increase your rankings for search terms related to that page. By cross linking pages with other pages in your website you will help evenly pass this weight around your website helping all pages rank well. An excellent example of this is Wikipedia. You will see that the text in a single Wikipedia page contains many links to other pages and sections of the Wikipedia website all with relevant anchor text.

Avoid Using Popup Windows and Frames

Do not add important information within a popup window link. To create the popup window the link is likely to use JavaScript which will block the search engine bots and then even if the popup window webpage is found and indexed it is likely that when a user visits that page they will have no navigation to take them through the rest of your website. The same problem happens when using HTML frames where you have your navigation in one frame and the content in another.

At the DEMOfall 08 conference in San Diego earlier this month, a company called beeTV unveiled a platform which it says allows viewers to choose the TV shows they want to watch by presenting them with a "personal content channel." According to the company, the platform can be used by IPTV, cable, satellite, and DTT operators and by mobile and broadband TV services to market and distribute their content in a "personal, push manner." When viewers launch their personal channel, it presents them with a personalized line-up of short clips of TV programs and movies (note: the clips can be presented as a video mosaic that offers various configurations or as a linear stream), from which they can then choose the content that interests them and that they want to watch in full. According to the channel, the content line-up of each viewer's personalized channel is determined in real time by a "proprietary contextual matching algorithm" that draws on data derived from previous viewing behavior (i.e. which programs they select or reject; the platform presents viewers with four choices: "Watch," "Not Now," "Never" and "Record"), a consumer profile, timing sensitivity analysis and the business logic and marketing requirements of the viewer's pay-TV operator. beeTV says that a personal content channel's programming line-up can be drawn from a variety of sources, including broadcast and premium TV, VOD, SVOD, pay-per-view and PVR, and that its platform is designed to work on traditional, broadband and mobile TV. "beeTV is like having a best friend who understands what you're all about, and who sits around all day scouring the TV universe for programming you would enjoy when you do find time to sit down and watch," beeTV co-founder and chairman, Rodolfo Hecht, said in a prepared statement. "Channel surfing was fine when there were a limited number of networks. As the choice grows exponentially, flipping through channels is no longer a sustainable option." According to beeTV, its platform is based on a server-side technology, called beeHIVE, which interfaces with an operator's existing systems and which includes all beeTV's proprietary components.

At the recent DEMOfall show in San Diego, a San Francisco-based start-up called iWidgets unveiled its new iWidgets Social Syndication Platform and announced that CBS Interactive has signed up as the platform's first customer. According to the company, the iWidgets Social Syndication Platform will allow CBS viewers to watch full episodes of CBS television shows directly within popular social networks and to interact with other viewers through such features as content-sharing, polls, ratings and contests. "Launching the iWidgets Social Syndication Platform with a major media company such as CBS Interactive is an exciting showcase of how social syndication can increase engagement of existing content," iWidgets CEO, Peter Yared, said in a prepared statement. "With social syndication, Web sites can now have their users share with their friends interesting information about themselves, such as their favorite television programming, their last run plotted by GPS, and their favorite recipes, which drives traffic and brand awareness." Added Anthony Soohoo, SVP and general manager of CBS Interactive: "We're always looking for new ways to let our fans engage with their favorite CBS TV shows. By socially syndicating CBS content with iWidgets, CBS fans can now customize their Facebook and MySpace pages with content from shows like 'CSI,' 'Survivor' and 'NCIS.' This allows them to share their favorite episodes with friends, as well as invite their friends to participate in interactive polls and contests."

iWidgets bills the iWidgets Social Syndication Platform as making it easy for Web sites to "socially syndicate" their content and user activity "deeply into" social networks and portals, such as Facebook, MySpace and iGoogle, in order to drive traffic and increase brand awareness. The company says that users of those social networks can now view a range of CBS programming within them, including the "CSI" family of shows, "Amazing Race," "NCSI" and "Numb3rs," and that, over the next few months, CBS plans to socially syndicate the majority of its programming through the platform. According to iWidgets, the new platform is based on its patent-pending WidgetWORA technology, which it claims provides the ability to publish to a range of social networks, portals, blog services and Web sites. The company says that--"unlike previous-generation widget solutions that place a square of identical, standalone Flash into destinations"--iWidgets are "deeply integrated" into the social graphs and viral channels of social networks.

–Comcast Announces Plans to Integrate Widget Channel with its EPG

Intel and Yahoo! last month

--Comcast Announces Plans to Integrate Widget Channel with its EPG

Intel and Yahoo! last month announced plans to launch the "Widget Channel," an application framework for TV and related consumer electronics devices that are based on the Intel Architecture. According to the companies, the Widget Channel will allow viewers to access Internet applications that have been designed for TV, while watching programming. It will be powered by the Yahoo! Widget Engine, a fifth-generation applications platform that will support a line-up of "TV Widgets"--small Internet applications that can be accessed by the remote control and that are intended to complement and enhance the TV viewing experience, by providing informational and entertainment content, and community features. The companies say that the Widget Channel will also allow developers to use Javascript, XML, HTML and Adobe Flash technology to create their own TV applications, thus "extending the power and compatibility of PC application developer programs" to TV and related CE devices. In addition to supporting the Yahoo! Widget Engine, Yahoo! says it will provide consumers with Yahoo!-branded TV Widgets that will be based on the various services it offers on the Internet.

Intel and Yahoo! say that the Widget Channel's mini-apps will, among other things, enable consumers to access Internet videos, track stocks or sports teams, interact with their friends, access news reports, find out additional information about the programs they are watching, and share content with friends and family. The companies say that they will be easily personalizable, because they will be based on Internet services such as Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Sports, Blockbuster and eBay that are designed to be customized by end-users. "TV will fundamentally change how we talk about, imagine and experience the Internet," Eric Kim, general manager of Intel's Digital Home Group, said in a prepared statement. "No longer just a passive experience unless the viewer wants it that way, Intel and Yahoo! are proposing a way where the TV and Internet are as interactive, and seamless, as possible. Our close work has produced an exciting application framework upon which the industry can collaborate, innovate and differentiate. This effort is one of what we believe will be many exciting new ways to bring the Internet to the TV, and it really shows the potential of what consumers can look forward to." Added Marco Boerries, EVP of Yahoo!'s Connected Life arm: "On the PC and mobile devices, Yahoo! is a leading starting point for millions of consumers around the world. Yahoo! aims to extend this leadership to the emerging world of Internet-connected TV, which we call the 'Cinematic Internet.' By partnering with leaders like Intel, we plan to combine the Internet benefits of open user choice, community, and personalization with the performance and scale embodied in the Intel Architecture to transform traditional TV into something bigger, better and more exciting than ever before. By using the popular Yahoo! Widget Engine to power the Widget Channel, we intend to provide an opportunity for all developers and publishers to create new experiences that can reach millions of TV viewers globally. Yahoo! plans to enable the Cinematic Internet ecosystem, which will benefit consumers, device makers, advertisers and publishers."

According to Intel and Yahoo!, the Widget Channel will be powered by a set of platform technologies that include, in addition to the Yahoo! Widget Engine, core libraries designed to exploit the capabilities of the Intel Architecture. The Widget Channel framework will use a number of established Internet technologies to significantly lower the barrier-to-entry for developing applications optimized for the TV, the companies say. In order to spur development of widgets for the Widget Channel, Intel and Yahoo! plan to make a development kit available to manufacturers of TV and other CE devices, as well as to advertisers and content providers. The Widget Channel will also include a Widget Gallery, the companies say, to which developers will be able to publish their TV Widgets across multiple TV and related CE devices, and through which consumers will be able to browse and choose the widgets they would like to use.

The companies say that a number of partners are planning to develop and deploy TV Widgets, including Blockbuster, CBS Interactive, CinemaNow, Cinequest, Comcast (see below), Disney-ABC Television Group, eBay, GE, Group M, Joost, MTV, Samsung Electronics, Schematic, Showtime, Toshiba and Twitter. In addition, the companies say they are working with "industry members" to promote the development of open standards that would help grow the TV Widget ecosystem: as part of these efforts, they are sharing an early version of a development kit for the Widget Channel with a "selected" group of developers.

The Widget Channel software framework is designed to run on Internet-connected TV's, cable set-top boxes, optical media players and other consumer electronics devices that are powered by a newly launched family of system-on-a-chip (SoC) media processors based on the Intel Architecture. The first of these Intel Architecture-based SoC's is the Intel Media Processor CE 3100, which is billed by the company as a highly integrated chip that includes a high-performance Intel Architecture core and other functional I/O blocks to enable HD video decode and viewing, home-theater-quality audio, 3D graphics and the fusion of the Internet and TV experiences. Intel says it plans to release an Intel Media Processor CE 3100-based hardware development system, called the "Innovation Platform," which will provide the initial development and validation environment for developers of widgets for the Widget Channel.

Comcast, the US's largest cable MSO, announced last month that it is working with Intel to bring IP-based applications to TV, using the new Widget Channel application framework. The companies say that they expect to begin integration testing of the Widget Channel framework in the first half of 2009 on Comcast's EPG, using tru2way/OCAP technology. "The Widget Channel enables interactive applications and tru2way technology has opened the door for these types of innovations to work in the cable industry," Comcast Cable CTO, Tony Werner, said in a prepared statement. "We're looking forward to working with Intel as we continue to bring our customers new features and services that further enhance their viewing experiences." Comcast is billing its plans to implement the Widget Channel on tru2way as an "important milestone in the evolution of the tru2way ecosystem," and says that the Widget Channel framework will complement tru2way technology and broaden the interactive TV developer community. (Note: for more on the Widget Channel, see article in this issue, and listen to [itvt]'s radio interview with Patrick Barry, VP of connected TV at Yahoo!'s Connected Life division, in Issue 7.99.)

Lately, I had the opportunity to examine the traffic source, content and keywords using Google Analytics for AltSearchEngines, a professional blog with heavy traffic and blog activities. Because this blog already has tons of traffic and few years of historical data I had enough depth of information to discover interesting blogging patterns. The specific blog structure is a single blog with multiple authors what that make using Google Analytics even more interesting. I'm not an expert in web analytics or SEO but I want to share some of my findings and I hope to hear and learn more from other web analytics users. In this post I also share some ideas for improving Google Analytics interface, those could make it even easier to detect some of the discussed patterns. Finally, I offer some ideas to act upon these patterns for improving future traffic.

Looking for patterns using Google Analytics

Right now I'm using the blog URL convention (date) to isolate Information for posts that were posted during the selected duration.E.g. looking at the traffic during September 08 contributed by posts that were only posted during that same month. Today Google Analytics shows traffic for all the posts on this blog for the selected duration and it requires some work to isolate the new posts from the old one in order to see how they contribute to the selected duration traffic. Why is this important? Pattern # 1 progress - does your content gets better? Maybe the traffic is all based on old success. The inverse - same as #1 but for old post s- i.e. show me the traffic for the past month excluding posts posted in the last month. It would be great if Google Analytics can do that for you.

I use spreadsheet to separate traffic for "generic" pages only- i.e. the home page, RSS button, page number etc... Why is this important? Each item on the blog other than blog posts has different importance and objective behind it so isolating these can help to fine tune each individually. It is also good to know if people are finding the root folder (i.e. your home page) maybe using bookmarks or blogrolls. Pattern #2 - are you building a great brand name? The inverse is interesting too - exclude "generic" pages from the report and allow focusing on blog's posts impact only. It would be great if Google Analytics can do that for you.

Support for blogs with multiple authorsor blog with many guest bloggers (not blog network). It will be a great help if you could see who is the blogger, in Google Analytics, next to the blog post traffic info. This could be automated (using a certain standardized way telling Google who wrote this post). Why is this important? Pattern #3 - finding the best bloggers on the team and learning from them.It could be the content, the style, the keywords, the community that these bloggers are building. I'm sure that this is useful in blog network too, yet over there it is easier to isolate bloggers traffic because each has his own domain name.

Daily traffic - hourly - higher granularity. Currently if you want to see daily traffic you have to change the date to today. There is no way to see hourly traffic. I wish there was a separate page for daily traffic and the resolution is in hours. Why is this important? Pattern # 4 - timing the post - if you noticed that your recent post is just great, you may want to leave it a little longer on the top of the blog. You may find that one social media site like StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious, Twitter, FriendFeed and more works better during different hours. It could also help learning when not to post (hint: 5pm eastern time during the work week:)).

Pattern #5 - lost opportunities or finding hidden gems - Finding your best historical stuff (not traffic based) from the time that you were less known as a great blogger or with smaller supportive community around you - looking for pages with the highest Time on Page and the smallest Bounce Rate yet low traffic. Just be careful, not to judge too soon. If there was not a lot of traffic the Time On Page number may be high - Google average it, so too small of traffic may keep this number high. Once you find a post that match this pattern try stumbling it.

Page view per visit- Google provide this number and you can track it over time. It shows if users stay longer on your web site reading more blog posts or leave quickly to find other more interesting blogs out there. It is important to build links between relevant blog posts on your blog (not excessively though). For blogs with multiple authors this is a real challenge. How other bloggers can see what to link to? This is when categories helps. If the team has visibility to exiting blog posts in each category, then they can think about how their post should be categorized, and then look for relevant blog posts to link to. Google Analytics can help here too, if it has access to the categorization information then it could show the success of one category over the other. If not then it would be great to annotate blog posts row's with more info (having custom properties) . Pattern #6 - content type (category) success. It is also important showing blog's recent and best posts on the sidebar, so the users can easily find them. The blog performance is another factor! People will not hang around slow web-site.

Keywords- there is a ton of data out there about this subject so I may repeat other's finding. My first finding is that people love the word "list". People love list but they really like this word in the title more than "best" (I think that Google hate this word). I could not resist using the word "list" for this post title:) People like to see the benefit (value) from reading your blog post more than artistic titles, so "hot to" is a great start for a title. Speaking about titles it is important to think about them for the long run too.If you write about a company or product put the name in the title. Why? So, if someone will be looking for this company few month from now, using any search engine, there is a chance to find your blog. Simple, yet I do see the opposite happening even till this day. You'll see the difference using Google Analytics very quickly. Some SEO experts tells you to optimize titles for the short run and then to modify them for the long run (beware from changing the permalinks) and Google Analytics can help telling you when is the right time to modify the title but I'm not sure if it will truly helps. I don't think that Google come back to re-crawl this content. Pattern # 7 - keywords timing and tuning.By the way, blogs with multiple authors or blog networks that are providing training and guidelines can bring new bloggers up to speed quickly and avoid such simple mistakes.

US vs. the rest of the world - Google Analytics provides regional segmentation's. You can see where your audience is coming from and how fast that region grows. So you can use this information to keep them engaged. For instance European use Jaikumore than Twitter so post updates from your blog over there and build community on Jaiku if this is your target audience. This is true for other social networks too (e.g. Facebook is very weak in Japan). Write content about local products, news and companies relative to the regional success - pattern # 8.

The right traffic source allocation and effort.Google Analytics dissect traffic into three categories: Direct Traffic, Referring sites, and Search Engines. As a blogger most of your impact is in the Referring web sites category. Especially in the beginning. This is where your work, building readers community is the key to your success. Again, Google Analytics shows you where your traffic is coming from and where it lands (landing pages). For blog with multiple authors (or for blogs network) it would be great to see the contribution by author, to reward the ones that expend their readership in this way. pattern #9 - are bloggers on the team growing their community? The Traffic Source percentage allocation can also tell you where you should invest your effort. It is different from case to case though e.g. if your blog talk about products (and sell them or use advertise on your blog for selling them) then SEO using the right keywords is the most important activity and the traffic source allocation should reflect that. For most other cases you should divide your time something like 30% reading other blogs or experimenting with tools, product, services, projects, 30% writing content and devote 30% of your time for community building. I really like to hear some feedback about this suggested allocation.

mmmmnm, do I have to come up with the tenth? ...OK, Pattern # 10 - what activities are helping you to find new readers?Google Analytics shows you two visitors types - new and returning. Look for what is it that you are doing bringing new users to the site. StumbleUpon is a great option. You can try tagging your blog using different tags. There are numerous places to tag these days: Wordpress, Technorati, StumbleUpon, Delicious to name a few. Check hashtags.orgfor most popular and recently added hashtags. You can Digg posts under different categories (business vs. technology). You can use TwitterPack and Twellow for finding people from different categories and sub-categories to follow, so they can follow you back, then build new relationships. You can comment on blogs from different categories (using Technorati and recently the revised Google Blog Search). You can use backtypeto see where bloggers leave comments and follow their actions. Keep checking Google Analytics to see what works and how the new visitors vs. returning, percentage changes.

There are more capabilities in Google Analytics than described in here; like finding broken links, specific browser and OS optimizations and exit pages to name a few. I have a lot more to learn but I think that what's in here are some of the more interesting patterns that you could discover using Google Analytics in the first few weeks using it.

Small disclosure: I work for a company that sells web analytics product but I don't work with that team and I know very little about it.

LONDON - Fans of Oasis can hear their new album 'Dig Out Your Soul' on Myspace for free, a week ahead of its commercial release, following in the footsteps of Coldplay who also used the social networking site to launch their latest album.

The new album is available in its entirety on the social networking site to listen to but not to buy, a week ahead of it's official release on October 6, when it will be available to purchase in stores and also through Myspace's new music portal Myspace Music.

Oasis has recently been vocal about other bands releasing their music for free, especially the landmark "honesty box" system used with Radiohead's latest 'In Rainbows'.

In typically straightforward terms Noel Gallagher told The Times: "I didn't spend a year in the most expensive studio in England, with the most expensive producer in America and the most expensive graphic designer in London, to then give it away. No chance".

A long overdue post on content. In class we discussed content in its various forms, as well as why

A long overdue post on content. In class we discussed content in its various forms, as well as why people will buy certain things but not others. And it's interesting to consider what actually has value, and why?

Depending on how much value we believe something has, we're willing to pay more in order to get it. I've even gone to the trouble of purchasing an entire CD for $10 on Itunes just so I could have the only $1 song that I wanted, simply because it was Album Only. But in that case, I did know exactly how valuable the song was. I knew it was a song I loved and wanted to listen to on my Ipod.

But what is interesting is when people pay for something with unknown value; for example, purchasing new novel. Of course there are always book reviews and advertisements to let you know exactly how valuable a book is, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the book will be valuable to you. I've actually gotten into the habit of taking books out from the library, and then purchasing them later if I know they are books I'll want to read again and again.

Now of course it is easier to pick and choose exactly what content you want to purchase, and what content you'd rather live without. You can buy single songs on Itunes, purchase only the parts of content that you are interested in, and not all of it.

I think the thing about content is that even if we assume that something is valuable based on what we've heard about it, we can never be completely sure. We are really taking a chance every time we buy something new. And now that we can personally select the content we want, this chance is becoming less and less of a risk, and more and more a nonexistent issue. It will be interesting to see where this takes us in the future.

Today was a better day for practicing, as I got some more circular figures done from Vilppu. Once I get a hold of both circular, box forms and gestures, I should start drawing more from life and other reference images. So far this is my third day in a row posting in anything so I'm pretty happy.

I should be working on an article at some point for everyone to take a look at. See you tomorrow with new content.

As said best by the folks at Textures R Us:

"Some people think that SL is just a game and its no big deal to copy things and use it as their own, perhaps as long as they make no big profit of it. But this practice is not just hurting the businesses and required source of income of hard working creators, its endangering the whole culture of SL and so its increasing the awareness of SL residents to that problem. Thats why aside from 'higher authorities', copyright violations are also being effectively dealt with inside SL. Groups of determined business owners will take measures to protect the intellectual property of their members. Mall and land owners concerned about not having illegal goods sold on their property will take down the shops of reported offenders or ban them.

Wouldnt you rather be proud of having created something original instead of stealing someone else's work?"
