The following page, Reviews, is a new venture but a familiar stage for me.   With a degree in Acting and extensive experience of the theatre industry in London and abroad, I offer up my opinion on new and established talent and productions.  My reviews will focus on theatre, but will include some screen work.  From classical to experimental, West End to fringe, indie to blockbusters - a whole range will be covered.  So watch this space!

Protecting the transgender and gender-variant from discrimination enjoys substantially more support among American voters nationwide than same-sex marriage does or probably ever will.

We saw that reality played out yet again this week in New York. The Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), the bill that would protect transgender and gender-variant New Yorkers from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accomodations statewide, was passed by the New York State Assembly yesterday by an overwhelming vote of 103-33. Same sex-marriage was passed by this same legislative body last year by a vote of 85-61.

And:

Yet, what we see and hear coming from HRC, Barney Frank, and so many others is the opposite of what has been conclusively proven over and over to be reality. It isn't true that rights for transgender and gender-variant Americans are somehow less palatable to the American public at large than the right of same-sex couples to be married.

I'm not trying to make value comparisons here. Both goals are supremely worthy; both deserve to become the law of the land as soon as humanly possible. My issue is with the hypocrisy of those like HRC (and especially Barney Frank) who continue pounding the drum for same-sex marriage while at the same time advocating for the exclusion of transgender and gender-variant Americans from basic civil rights legislation by claiming that there's not enough support for it to pass.

Some friends invited Moe and I over a few months ago to discuss the exclusion of the transgender community from ENDA.  Thanks to the magic of editing, much of the interesting discussion that occurred between all of us was removed, but  the interview with Marty Rouse of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) in the middle is revealing and as Moe called it - totally disgusting. 

Some friends of mine put together this short video on the importance of an inclusive ENDA.  Although it seems like the videographer cut out most of the dinner conversation on various attendees employment discrimination experiences (too bad!), it still does a great job of encapsulating the issue for audiences that aren't familiar with what's been happening.  I think I'm a little more comfortable not having my story about being introduced as the "office tranny" all over the internet in video form anyway.  Or the time I was turned down for an internal position because they wanted a "real/bio male" in the position... I'm so glad I left that organization.  An added plus in this vid - the interview with Marty Rouse of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) in the middle is really disgusting. 

(Consequently, if you're interested in following more of what happened with ENDA from a view inside the HRC's Board of Directors, take a stroll over to Donna Rose's ENDA blog.  Very, very interesting reading.)

Look, I'm down with those crazy Libertarians to a point, and i say that with all due reflection--crazy like Hunter Thompson. Just like them I believe that the government should always be viewed with skepticism and not blindly trusted to do good, and I damn sure don't want the government legislating what I do personally if it doesn't harm anyone else (and yes, I am mostly talking about weed, but also about morality legislation in general).

Where we part ways is in the idea that we can co-exist in a society without government. Watch the video for more on that.

As an addendum, I'd like to say that I now consider the Libertarian view to be the far left of the feasible political spectrum. George Bush and his cohorts in the GOP have branded the Republicans as the party of Big Government with the size of the budget, warrantless wiretapping, and total corruption of our Justice Department. That puts people like me back in the center, who want us to be free but understand the necessity and purpose of government.

So I'm while I'm glad to have this little experiment in NH, I'd like to see it replicated en masse by people simply taking back control of their local governments. We need to enact policies that demand all our politicians are constantly, openly, and directly confronted by their constituents. No more 'guessing' what the public sentiment is through polls that ask ridiculous questions by an out of touch media apparatus. We have the tools to repair our government, we only need the will.

Si presentava Current.tv, la televisione dei blogger, dell'era internet. Al Gore sarebbe venuto a Milano per aprire la sede italiana della sua televisione che usa i contenuti web fatti dai blogger.

Ieri finalmente è stato dato il via a questa esperienza, e devo dire che è affascinante, sapere che ci può essere un canale televisivo che trasmette su un canale Sky, i contenuti che dalla rete tutti possiamo inviare.

Si parla di televisione e democrazia in questi giorni, ma non vorrei che si abusasse di questi termini e valori, per proporre e diffondere un progetto come filantropico, quando invece è puramente commerciale.

Beninteso, la Current.Tv manderà circa il 30% del palinsesto con materiale e contenuto proveniente dal web.Ma resterà un targeting del suo fare business.

Si aumentrà la possibilità di fare televisione per tutti, indistamente, ma non è ancora chiaro come effettivamente si garantirà la salvezza dalla censura e quali i criteri precisi per la selezione del materiale da mandare in onda.

Non voglio, ripeto, dirne male, anzi io sono favorevole, ma vorrei che si cercasse di mantere i piedi per terra.

C'era e c'è già una tv che manda in satellite i contenuti del web, questa si chiama Arcoiris.Tv.

Non vedo molte differenze se non che dietro al progetto di Al Gore c'è il marketing fatto professionalmente, ci sono risorse, e mediamaker che lavorano bene sui visual, sulla grafica, sulla piattaforma.

C'è chiaramente un nome ingombrante che stà cercando di diventare il Guru del terzo millennio.

Bè per come siamo messi ora in Italia, è davvero una buona possibilità, una buona soluzione.

Spero però vivamente che noi blogger sapremo tirar fuori davvero qualcosa dal basso, qualcosa dal niente, qualcosa di veramente condiviso, di veramente 2.0

Sono stato invitato a partecipare ad un evento nel quale "Al Gore incontrerebbe volentieri..
i blogger italiani!" così mi ha scritto Marco montemagno nella email di invito speditami il 18 Aprile.

L'email diceva anche: "...Per allargare però la partecipazione e evitare elite e
autoreferenzialità, in aggiunta si darebbe a ogni blogger una ventina di
inviti per i propri lettori (così che la domanda *live* a Gore, magari la
fa il blogger ma questa può essere la summa di quanto ognuno di noi sul
blog riceverà come commenti).

...

Non so come la vedi ma pensavo che potesse essere una buona idea che Al
Gore anzichè venire a fare solo la solita conferenza stampa incontrasse
i blogger italiani...

...E' la prima volta a memoria, che si fa una cosa del genere - senza un
intento troppo marchettaro, non essendoci di fatto un prodotto da
vendere ma con la voglia di aprire ai blogger...

Sulle domande che si potranno fare a Gore l'obiettivo che mi sembra di
capire ad oggi, è quello di consentire alla maggior parte dei blogger di

Dopo 12 giorni, il 30 Aprile ho ricevuto un'altra email da Marco che annunciava il ribaltamento completo di quanto originalmente annunciato. La conversazione in diretta era morta e si passava ad una richiesta di pre-sottomissione delle domande, registrazione obbligatoria per tutti a Current, e scelta per votazione "democratica". Così Al non ha sorprese spiacevoli.

Riporto testualmente: "Per quanto riguarda le domande.

Di fatto, con questi tempi e con la diretta in corso, quelle da porre dal vivo potranno essere al massimo una quindicina (facendo il calcolo dei minuti, tra domanda, risposta, traduzione).

Il meccanismo voluto da Current (e Sky) vuole però essere di massima apertura, trasparenza e trasversalità, utilizzando un sistema di votazione (= le domande più votate saranno quelle che verranno fatte l’8 maggio)."

Mia constatazione personale:

Se Gore-Current-Sky Vogliono Avere Una Conversazione Aperta con La Rete Italiana...

...bisogna che scendano dal piedistallo ed abbiano il coraggio di fare quello che avevano promesso: un incontro live, con delle domande dal vivo fra i partecipanti ed Al Gore.

Altrimenti, ma che ci vado a fare? A fare promozione al loro progetto quando non posso neanche dire la mia?

Io non mi presto a dare maggiore visibilità a questi signori, se loro non dimostrano un reale interesse ad avere una reale conversazione con me e con tutti gli altri che rappresentano la rete.

Per quel che ne ho capito io, e può darsi che mi sbagli, il web 2.0 è una conversazione aperta.

Se Al Gore è realmente disponibile a rispondere alle domande "non-filtrate" della rete, io, lo aspetto fuori (l'Ambra Iovinelli). E tu?

Sono appena tornato da Roma, dove ho assistito al lancio dell versione italiana di Current_TV, la prima non-inglese.
Sono stato invitato al Teatro Jovinelli insieme a circa quattrocento blogger, tecnologi, giornalisti, studenti e simili. E' stata un bella idea (grazie a Marco Montemagno (che è simpaticissimo e super-energico) e altri), e una grande occasione per incontrare alcuni blogger che leggo, ma che non avevo mai incontrato dal vivo (Paolo Valdemarin, Massimo Mantellini...).

Al Gore, il fondatore di Current_TV, era l'ospite principale.
