After pulling out a Latin and Greek dictionary during a phone call to my professional writer sister,

After pulling out a Latin and Greek dictionary during a phone call to my professional writer sister, I came to realize that John Zachman served us a horrible brutalization of Greek for terminology. Had he only looked at the Greek language with some insight he would have saved me considerable difficulty in correlating definition with application.

Johnny 's been messin' wid our 'eads, man.

Correcting that usage will be on my to do list.

Here, I am abstracting the framework by incorporating the correct Greek, abstracting the focuses by using polygon icons and abstracting the perspectives by using de Bono's thinking color code:

There you have it, a completely new take on the Mix Thirty-six.

Hey, Aristotle, Six Unities! Hey, Plato, Six Polygons! Hey, de Bono, Six Hats!

Yes, after a day's head banging, I switched when and where.

In the next post, I will be definining each of these icons. Now we can talk about System Logics, System Organics, System Mechanics, System Physics, System Cosmics and System Chronics with a sense that our terminology will migrate across disciplines easily if our audience has any understanding of Greek roots.

Vaak voel ik me zwart.

Soms gevoelens die me doen imploderen, soms gevoelens die me activeren, soms woedend maken.

Maar ja, who am i ?

I remember when I started writing again how at sea I felt. On the waves of an emerging literary boom in South Africa, I decided to dip my toes into the water. For many years I just wrote, churned out stories week after week without any idea as to who my reader might be or where I would send the stories to for publication.

I read every writing manual I could lay my hands on and scanned the internet week after week for a course where I might meet other wannabe writers. But alas there were no courses available and it was just by coincidence that I learned of the MA in Writing programme at Wits. It was certainly the catalyst that yanked my writing out of its status of dabbling and catapulted it into my life's commitment.

There are obviously courses for horses and I would say the MA was a lucky bet for me; it provided exactly the didactic atmosphere that I enjoy. I learned a lot about craft - not everything, but a helluva lot. There are aspects of writing that I felt definitely were not given the attention they deserved, such as the ethics of writing and revision and editing.

Currently there are a lot of writing courses on offer and they are varied and seem tailor-made for the new writer who wants to try their hand. The range of topics is vast - romance writing, song-lyric writing, poetry, memoir, etc. Personally I find most courses geared towards the beginning writer who wants to specialise in a certain genre, yet there are other areas that could provide extremely interesting content for the more experienced writer, such as real travel writing, not tourist blurb; representation of the Other in contemporary literature; writing and meditation; how to use De Bono to generate stories. In fact, I think I will teach some of these classes ...

Hereunder is a list of some of the companies offering courses. Please note the list is not exhaustive and it is given as a guide only:

www.itsallwrite.net - The Write Company offer a variety of courses in Joburg and Cape Town. The irmonthly newsletter is informative and encourages interactivity. I haven't been on any of their courses because their course-prices are never listed on the site and it's a pain to always have to ask! However, replies to questions are always prompt and friendly. A big, big plus is that they have a large number of published graduates.

http://www.sawriterscollege.co.za/ - S A Writers College offers a range of online courses and a user-friendly website with lots of interesting info for writers. Their online short story course costs R2995.

http://www.cityvarsity.co.za/shortc/sc_journ/sc_fmj/shortc/sc_ctbdates/ - City Varsity in Cape Town offers a basic 5-week journalism course at a cost of R3500. It is held in the evenings, which makes it a viable proposition for people who work.

http://www.futureshock.co.za/nucourse.htm - South African Writers Network offer self-study modules at a cost of R350 per module.

http://www.intec.edu.za/live/content.php?Item_ID=103 - Intec offers self-study courses in Creative Writing and Journalism. Their price is R3760 to R4 178.

http://www.anneschuster.co.za/ - Anne Schuster offers the Women's Writing Workshop. Appears to offer courses that focus on introspective writing - a good place to start - not a good place to stay for either yourself or your writing.

http://www.unisa.ac.za/Default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&ContentID=7612 - UNISA (Pretoria) offer a correspondence BA in Creative Writing in both English and Afrikaans. Inquire at fees office for cost of this course or modules thereof.

http://www-za.iaj.org.za/index.htm?main_category=4 - Institute for the Advancement of Journalism(Parktown, Johannesburg) offers a range of courses during the year. User-friendly site, but again no costs advertised so you'll have to email at print@iaj.org.za

http://web.wits.ac.za/Academic/Humanities/GSH/GraduateProgammes/MACoursework.htm - University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg). Many published graduates from this programme. No details on their website about the Creative Writing MA, may be in abeyance. Phone them to find out on 011-717-4032 or email them at gradschool@gsh.wits.ac.za

http://www.commerce.uct.ac.za/organisations/creative_writing/application.asp - University of Cape Town. Full details available for the MA they offer in Creative Writing. Lots of published graduates from this programme.

http://www.writersbureaucourse.com/?gclid=CNrx0Kr00pQCFQ8gQgodyil1lg - The Writers Bureau is an international correspondence course based in the UK and they offer a guarantee on their courses. Exchange rate may be prohibitive for some of the overseas-based online courses.

Things that you might like to consider when deciding on where to take a course are: Who is teaching the course - what are their credentials? What type of interaction will I have with teachers or mentors to help solve problems that I may encounter? What exactly will I learn on the course. Ask for an outline so that you know what will be covered and the learning level at which the course is pitched?

Accept that there is no single course that is going to provide solutions to all your writerly needs, but the benefits that accrue from learning your craft well and making contact with people who are literary minded are well worth it.

In the last post we looked at entity manipulations. Now let’s look at the next row in the Six

In the last post we looked at entity manipulations. Now let's look at the next row in the Six Hats Six Coats Framework:

Relationships are all about communication and are subject to the same manipulations as a communication link. We also established earlier that there are six relationship types:

So how do we manipulate these relationships?

The first relationship manipulation is the SELECT:

The SELECT manipulation "snoops" or "eavesdrops" on the relationship between two instances. The relationship is untouched.

The second manipulation is the INSERT:

The INSERT manipulation "throws" or "interjects" into the relationship between two instances. Extra data is added to the relationship, but the original is untouched.

Next is the UPDATE manipulation:

The UPDATE manipulation "spoofs" or "imitates" the relationship between two instances. The original data is changed in value.

Finally we have the DELETE manipulation:

The DELETE manipulation "crashes" or "denies service" between two instances. The original data is completely corrupted or the relationship broken.

And there you have relationship manipulation in a nutshell.

In many early posts in this blog I was looking for different fits of different conceptual groups. Tonight after wracking my brains into the wee hours some of the conceptual sets began to fit. And fit very well.

The first column represents the six entity relationships and my extended James Moffat Speaker Audience relationships. The second column represents the Zachman Framework Focuses. The third column represents the Zachman Framework Perspectives. The fourth column represents the Galilei/Newton/Einstein equation. The fifth column represent my extended James Moffatt Time Contexts. The sixth column represents my terms for Edward de Bono's Six Thinking Hats. The seventh column represents the Associative Structure of the six entity relationships.

The rows in the table represent the synonyms across the conceptual sets. I will leave you free to reflect on the implications.

In most developing countries, lack of easy access to fuel and mechanised solutions is a reality. Tha

In most developing countries, lack of easy access to fuel and mechanised solutions is a reality. That means that there is implicit 'green'ness in the way things are done today. Also, the fact that there is not enough to go around, means that thrift is in their DNA. These are important virtues to uphold in green living. Except, of course, that these nations are fast developing and in doing so eroding the little 'green'ness they possessed.Take the example of India.

... where shaving is still done with a mug of water and not the tap water running through

... where clothes are still dried out in the sun rather than in the electric dryer

... where recycled newspaper bags have been used for generations

Thrift and 'wastage is sacrilege' are common middle class values of my mother's generation. I have some of it but cousins half my age have very little of it. They even think this thrift and avoidance of wastage is 'old fashioned' and so out of date. If countries like India need to do their bit towards the environment they need to keep whats good today and try and find alternative 'green' ways to sustainable growth. While I am sure there are better brains thinking of the technology of sustainable development, I want to dwell upon the softer attitudinal bits that are fast eroding. There are to my mind two essential steps to take :

1) Inspire people to want green living2) Help them think green

Inspire people to want green living :Urbane and fashionable India is getting to be green conscious. But, middle class India still looks at tolerance to some wastage as a sign of growth. So I tried a 'what if' on this . "'What if' thrift and avoidance of wastage were fashionable."I see a campaign emerging : I visualise middle class mothers today gladly rebranding their thrift as 'being greener citizens'. And I can also visualise such behaviour being palatable to the info savvy, with it, cynical teens of today. Think of the new found 'citizens of today' badge all the guju ben's and the madu mem's can strut. It has the potential to be infectious. Already Celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan (Big B) and Smita Irani (Tulsi to many) are using their pop status to promote greener ways of living. So the stage is being set. Together with this, one smart housewife type campaign could make green living fashionable in the belly of India. Its only a matter of time, before this becomes a new mantra. Countries that at present are wary of using public policy and law to regulate and manage eco friendly behaviour will find their citizens demanding it off them. It is possible. In deed, it is going to happen.them think Green :Recently, on BBC, the donkey garbage collectors of a small town in Italy were news. Yes! DONKEY GARBAGE COLLECTORS.The proud Mayor explained to the camera's that Valentino (one of the donkeys) and her friends have replaced vans because they are more cost effective and because their carbon footprint is minimal. You see, Donkeys have been commonly used since Roman times. So when it came to coming up with ideas to take a step forward in green living, inspiration came from looking two steps back into history. While this may sound funny, I think there is a formula here that works. Some of the established techniques of creative thinking will approach it thus : define status quo, challenge it or imagine the absence of the issue. And see if that throws up new ideas. In this case, the greatest sinners of carbon emissions are modern day transportation fuels and mechanisation. If you had to do an idea generation session in green living, one way is to ask yourself "'What if' fuel went extinct today". Different consultancies would lead you from different starting points.... De Bono might called it Provocation technique or Po. What if?! will use similar terms as I have above. Synectics will use analogies. Anyways, the point is that, it is possible to look into history when absence of fuel was a reality and therefrom draw inspiration for ideas. When you look at it like this, its no surprise that the small Sicilian town came up with the DONKEY GARBAGE COLLECTORS. And there's a thought.... To take a step forward in green living, maybe we should ask the question "'What if' I had to do without this' and look two steps back into history. The answer, my friend, could be blowing in the wind.N.B. : The above is by no means a naive attempt at simplifying a highly complex and critical issue but a rough and ready insight into what inherent Indian attitudes, traits and habits are worth preserving for green living and further how we can challenge the emerging stigmas on them.
