Deep Purple, en su mejor momento creativo, lanza en 1970 esta pieza de su más aclamado disco "In Rock" para sentar las bases de lo que puede hacerse en el rock progresivo. Soy fan de la de Kula Shaker. Han habido otros covers de esta canción pero estas dos son las mejores. Deep Purple la grabó primero en 1968 y veinte años despues la regrabó.

Y bueno, ahora que ya he cogido algo más de ánimos puedo hablar un poco sobre la decepción que supuso el frustrado Monsters of Rock/Metalway, ya que al final fueron suspendidos, en cuanto al primero decir que se desarrollaba con total normalidad (si excluimos el excesivo calor que hizo) hasta el concierto de Ted Nugent, al terminar este concierto ocurrió lo que se llevaba tiempo esperando: una tormenta, pero eso que muchos esperábamos se convirtió en algo mucho peor, toda una aventura que tristemente culminó en la suspensión de los conciertos restantes del Monsters of Rock, es decir Deep Purlple, Saxon y  Twisted Sister, que eran los principales grupos que la gente quería ver, y la completa suspensión al día siguiente del Metalway, este es mi relato de los hechos:

Tras el concierto de Ted nugent a lo lejos empezaban a hacer acto de presencia unas nubes de color oscuro y empezó a levantarse un fuerte viento, que poco a poco se fue conviertiendo en muy fuerte, con él se levantó una considerable polvareda que hacía díficil el poder estar en el exterior y que incluso llegó a entrar el interior de nuestra tienda de acampada; estos fuertes vientos se conviertieron en cuestión de minutos en casi huracanados (superaron los 70 Km/h), nuestra tienda rompió una de las varillas de sujección debido al brutal viento que había fuera, y comenzó a llover intensamente mientras dentro de la tienda nos dedicábamos a intentar contener el pánico algunos y a reír otros, y mientras tanto a sostener la tienda por el lado que se había roto, y la intensa lluvia caló en el interior de la tienda y dio paso a un fuerte granizo (del tamaño de cánicas) acompañado de una fuerte tormenta eléctrica. Todo esto duró alrededor de 25 minutos, y la que se montó fue muy sería a juzgar por el panorama que nos encontramos al salir de nuestra tienda, bastante desolador, muchas tiendas habían desaparecido literalmente y una mayoría estaban enterradas en barro y agua, otras muchas inservibles de los daños que habían recibido, a pesar de todo nuestra tienda aguantó muy bien, y solo tuvimos que reparar la dishosa varilla, al salir ya nos dimos cuenta de que aquello pudo convertirse en una gran tragedia, y podemos dar gracias de que solo hubiese un herido, nos acercamos a la zona de conciertos a la que pudimos acceder (pese a no tener pulsera para ese día) porque las vayas se habían venido abajo y contemplamos en primera persona los daños sobre el escenario y sobre la torre de sonido y barras de bar.

Nosotros esa noche pudimos arreglar la tienda perfectamente y dormimos la mar de bien -ya sin sobresaltos- en el interior de ella, cosa que no pudo hacer todo el mundo, asi pues en este aspecto nos consideramos unos afortunados, la jornada del sábado fue muy triste, ya se sabía o al menos era algo que intuíamos muchos que no se iba a celebrar el festival Metalway tampoco, ya sabemos y somos conscientes de que la que se montó en un momento fue muy gorda, y que era díficil de preveer tal magnitud de tormenta, pero la patética organización del evento (Rock ´n rock) no hizo absolutamente NADA durante toda la noche para tratar de solventar los problemas y prefirieron embolsarse el seguro que para estos casos tienen, jugando así con el dinero, las vacaciones y lo peor aún las ilusiones de los que allí nos desplazamos, encima no quisieron dar la cara como cobardes, y se hartaron de repetir hasta la saciedad por megafonía que iban a devolver el dinero de la entrada, ¿qué os esperábais qué no lo pidiesemos? eso es lo mínimo, ¿por qué la gasolina, los billetes de tren o autobus, los días de vaciones y demás gastos además de la ilusión no la vais a devolver verdad? una total incompetencia por parte de estos señores, a partir de ahora deberíamos de no hacer el tonto más y deberíamos pensarnos dos veces el volver a asistir a algún festival organizado por Rock ´n Rock.

No hubo gira especial de Iron Maiden para mí, tampoco hubo Avantasia (y me temo que ya nunca podrá ser) y toca resignación, el Sábado después de todo se comenzó a montar a eso de la una de la tarde otra tormenta muy sería y nos pusimos a recoger todo en un tiempo récord, antes de que la tormenta nos alcanzanse y desde aquí aprovecho para dar las gracias a unos simpáticos y amables catalanes que sin su ayuda no nos hubiera dado tiempo a desmontar todo el chiringuito antes de la granizada, y que se decidieron quedarse allí en esa especie de zona de guerra que nosotros dejamos atrás. Finalmente acabamos esta aventura no sé muy bien como en la Hospedería de La Dolores de Calatayud, en nuestra busqueda de  alojamiento para una noche dimos a parar a este acojedor lugar.

As a Rock music enthusiast, fan, musician, observer and critic, I've developed a deep interest in understanding the qualitative attributes of Rock music that make it such a powerful socio-cultural phenomenon. My experiences of Rock music have raised many thought provoking questions in my mind about how the  of the phenomenon of a Rock band mobilizes people in spaces and situations where they express shared beliefs, ideas, contradictions and attitudes.Rock and its evolutionary counterpart Heavy Metal have become a subject of interest to me because of the unique positions they occupy, as two distinct yet similar socio-cultural phenomena characterized by a variety of meaning making elements that make them powerful instruments of expression. These meaning making elements include musical instruments,language, lyrics, composition, external appearance, clothing styles, mannerisms, body language and performance styles, to name a few. The music that emerges is a synthesis of these elements in varying proportions. Thus it becomes interesting to look at Rock and heavy metal in the context of their socio-cultural fabric.

Rock and Metal are characterized by a large degree of heterogeneity in terms of musical style and creative expression. It is this heterogeneity that grants them different forms and identities in different regions to which they have traveled ( through various media) as cultural products. They have strong connections with various political events in history and reflect the characteristics of various social, political and cultural conditions in which individuals and groups co-exist.

I tried to understand Rock and Heavy Metal music within the context of subcultures and thus in 2007 I began my masters degree communication research project on Rock and Heavy Metal as Youth Subcultures. I set out to study these  genres of music as subcultural formations and the manner in which they grant identities to individuals and groups; and to also locate subcultural expressions produced in various 'sites' of production ( in live and computer mediated spaces) by people who are mobilized around the phenomenon of a Rock Band. I chose a few bands in Bangalore as objects of my study but some of the findings and key observations of my research could be applicable within larger geographical contexts.

Was it this song that made music change heavier? Or was it Helter Skelter? At least we know it was the Beatles and of this particular album that music changed. The Led Zeppelin's, The Black Sabbath's and The Deep Purple's, did they get off on this style? Did it inspire them when they were younger, all spotty and brash? Did the music come out of the speakers and smack them across the face? Who knows, but them i guess. The White Album is the mark by which all other music is judged upon and by God so fucking be it.

Each song on the sprawling double album The Beatles is an entity to itself, as the band touches on anything and everything it can. This makes for a frustratingly scattershot record or a singularly gripping musical experience, depending on your view, but what makes the so-called White Album interesting is its mess. Never before had a rock record been so self-reflective, or so ironic; the Beach Boys send-up "Back in the U.S.S.R." and the British blooze parody "Yer Blues" are delivered straight-faced, so it's never clear if these are affectionate tributes or wicked satires. Lennon turns in two of his best ballads with "Dear Prudence" and "Julia"; scours the Abbey Road vaults for the musique concrète collage "Revolution 9"; pours on the schmaltz for Ringo's closing number, "Good Night"; celebrates the Beatles cult with "Glass Onion"; and, with "Cry Baby Cry," rivals Syd Barrett. McCartney doesn't reach quite as far, yet his songs are stunning -- the music hall romp "Honey Pie," the mock country of "Rocky Raccoon," the ska-inflected "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," and the proto-metal roar of "Helter Skelter."
Clearly, the Beatles' two main songwriting forces were no longer on the same page, but neither were George and Ringo. Harrison still had just two songs per LP, but it's clear from "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," the canned soul of "Savoy Truffle," the haunting "Long, Long, Long," and even the silly "Piggies" that he had developed into a songwriter who deserved wider exposure. And Ringo turns in a delight with his first original, the lumbering country-carnival stomp "Don't Pass Me By." None of it sounds like it was meant to share album space together, but somehow The Beatles creates its own style and sound through its mess. ~ [Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide]

The first version of "Revolution" to be released (though the last to be recorded) was the B-side of the "Hey Jude" single, released in early September 1968.
A product of the recording sessions for The Beatles (aka The White Album), "Revolution" featured distorted guitars and an electric piano solo by session musician Nicky Hopkins. This track is said to be one of the loudest and most aggressive Beatles songs; it begins abruptly with a loud, overdriven electric guitar played by Lennon, a thundering, compressed drum beat from Ringo Starr and a monstrous scream from Lennon. (The scream was an overdub added when Lennon double tracked his vocal. McCartney performed the scream on the semi-live performance for the promotional film, because Lennon could not deliver the scream and catch his breath again in time to launch into the first verse.)

The musical form is a simple
rock and roll chord progression, but the highly processed elements and hyperbolic approach distinguished the track from nearly anything that had come before; the sound of "Revolution" is often cited as presaging heavy metal. "Revolution" later appeared on the 1970 Hey Jude compilation album created for the U.S. market and other compilations.
The Beatles performed the song semi-live (with live vocals performed over a pre-recorded instrumental track) in a specially produced promotional film shot by director Michael Lindsay-Hogg at the same time as the Hey Jude promotional film. The film received its world premiere in Britain on David Frost's ITV television programme, 4 September 1968. As the Beatles were singing the vocals live on the film, they elected to incorporate part of the vocal arrangement from the slower Revolution 1 version of the track. McCartney and Harrison added the "shoop-doo-wop" backing vocals unique to that version behind Lennon's lead vocal - thus making the vocals on the film performance a hybrid of the two versions of the song. What does Rolling Stone think about the Beatles

Beyond its stylish minimalism, the essentially blank cover of The Beatles, better known as the White Album, served a symbolic purpose. The band could find no honest way to visually represent itself as a coherent unit. Each of the three main songwriters was pursuing his own vision, with the other members, however reluctantly, serving as backup musicians. Once a whole far greater than the sum of its parts, the Beatles were now a tense alliance of daunting individual talents. The Beatles became a double album in part because John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison all insisted that their favorite songs be included. "I remember having three studios operating at the same time," Harrison said of the sessions. "Paul was doing some overdubs in one, John was in another and I was recording some horns or something in a third." Ringo Starr grew so frustrated that he quit the band for a time. The others festooned his drum set in flowers to celebrate his return. What didn't suffer in this atmosphere was the music. From the plangent yearning of Lennon's "Julia" to the exuberance of McCartney's "Back in the U.S.S.R." and the prayerfulness of Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (featuring a solo by Eric Clapton), the White Album is an exhilarating sprawl -- some of the Beatles' most daring and delicate work. When Roger Waters came to Bangalore, I had semester exams. When Rolling Stones performed here, I had my internal reviews at college. Just before Sting graced this city, I discovered Sixties garage rock and free downloads through Kazaa to give him a second thought.

Hard rock dinosaurs Deep Purple put on a concert at Cathedral Grounds in Bangalore sometime last year. Amidst brooding excitement we purchased tickets a week before the concert. As the week drudged along, we realized that we never did like Deep Purple. Adrenaline sometimes accompanied Highway Star. We liked Hush and we are certain that Space Truckin’ kicks ass. But we were either ignorant or wary of the other stuff Deep Purple has been putting out there over the years. So what the hell were we doing here? As soon as we entered the arena, answers to such questions exhausted themselves.

It was a cold night. The mind was far from sobriety. Far, far away. The opening band were as metrosexual as light pink shirts. But their brand of rock and roll was sort of entertaining. Chilli Peppers and AC/DC were covered with a bit of style. The crowd was bad. Awful even. Every one and their third cousin were waiting for the familiar riff that kickstarts Smoke on the Water. A couple of in-bred morons even started a “We want Metallica” chant. What we wanted was quiet appreciation. And what we really didn’t want was what we ended up with. A crowded spot near the speakers.

Two hours later, I was still unsatisfied. Headbanging seemed out of place. Moshing bordered along the lines of frivolity. I hadn’t felt so vacant at a rock concert since some silly band from Delhi covered Europe’s Final Countdown at IIT Sarang, 2001.

Ian Gillan and Steve Morse looked older than Walt Disney’s grandparents. They tried. They really did, but these dinosaurs could muster up all but energy.

Then the dam riff started. Ten ten ten…ten ten…ten ten…ten ten ten…ten ten. We grabbed our jackets

and ran towards the exit. If music be food fit for kings, then this kingdom just collapsed under the weight of its own eagerness to rinse and repeat.

A uno no le consideran rey del Heavy Metal así porque sí, un día cualquiera, de buenas a primeras. No. Uno se gana el título a base de álbumes intemporales y demostrándolo bajo los focos del escenario y ante el público soberano. Deep Purple hizo todo esto a la vez, con un disco grabado en directo que pasó por méritos propios a los anales de la historia. Made in Japan recoge actuaciones de la banda de Hertfordshire durante su gira japonesa en 1972. A lo largo de tres veladas en las ciudades de Osaka y Tokio —15, 16 y 17 de agosto— los ingleses repasaron los temas de tres de sus trabajos más laureados hasta el momento, Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball y Machine Head , aquéllos con los que se habían dado a conocer en todo el mundo. Made in Japan fue publicado a finales del 72 en Reino Unido en forma de vinilo, y aunque inicialmente no iba a ser lanzado al mercado en ningún otro lugar, finalmente llegó hasta Estados Unidos en mayo de 1973 y vendió más de un millón de copias. En cuanto a la grabación, cabe destacar que, al contrario que muchas otras, la banda británica no empleó arreglos en el proceso, y es que la calidad era de por sí tan elevada que resultó innecesario...

Así es, la calidad es la mejor presentación de este álbum. El directo no sólo no empeora el sonido de los temas, sino que lo mejora con creces, y los culpables no son otros que sus propios protagonistas. La voz de Ian Gillan, la guitarra de Ritchie Blackmore y el órgano de Jon Lord brillan con luz propia, obligando a sus seguidores a contener la respiración hasta la última nota de cada canción. Además, éstas se alargan de manera notable, unas más que otras, como en el caso de Space Truckin', que pasa de los cuatro minutos y medio del estudio a prácticamente veinte. Sin embargo, esto no resulta ningún problema, ya que lejos de aburrir, las vivas secciones instrumentales y los solos —como el de batería en The Mule o de guitarra en Smoke on the Water— logran que el ritmo nunca desfallezca.

The classic punk bands for example remain relevent. There is always someone who wants to stick it to whatever 'man' is in power, and for them, the music rings as true today as when influential bands like The Clash, Dead Kennedys, The Stooges and The Sex Pistols came to prominence.

Metal is metal is metal is metal. A kick ass riff or mind numbing ear bleedingly great guitar solo is always awesome - wether is was wailed out by Deep Purple or Motorhead back in the day or by Lamb of God or Killswitch Engage last week.

Funk, Soul, Motown and the great girl groups from the 60's and 70's are always idolised by those who perform under the Urban and R&B banners today. Idolised - and rarely matched. By the way, don't get me started on R&B (if its not BB King or Muddy Waters singing about how his girl and his dog up and left him for another man - it aint R&B)!!

Great music is always great. Their albums sell consistently. Pop music inflates like bubblegum, getting bigger and bigger before bursting with a 'pop,' never to be big again. Pop is interchangable and produces more one hit wonders than any other genre. No I will not provide evidence - the fact that I can barely remember the rubbish Im attempting to attack is evidence enough that pop is pretty forgettable.

All you have to do is go into your friendly neighbourhood record store and look for 25th anniversary or even 10th anniversary editions of classic albums. Not greatest hits mind you - any idiot can put out a greatest hits compilation after two albums. Anniversary editions of albums, to me, suggest that the music contained therein is as relevent and wonderful today as it was when it was released. 
Michael Jackson, Weezer, NWA, Jeff Buckley, Dead Kennedys, Meatloaf and many more. The music has endured. It may not be your exact cup of tea - but you gotta respect its longevity.

Autografi, due plettri personali di Roger Glover e una "cold beer" offerta direttamente da Ian Paice.

Incredibile... Ma ancora più incredibile è stato sentire Glover andare via RINGRAZIANDOCI DEL CD CHE GLI ABBIAMO REGALATO CONTENENTE SANGUE NERO E BELLA (SONO SOLO UN UOMO) DEGLI ONDADHURTO!!!

Esatto, ora i Deep Purple conoscono gli Ondadhurto ed hanno un nostro cd.

Questo è uno schizzo che ho fatto su un soggetto che mi è stato suggerito e che ho trovato suggestivo. Carboncino su carta comune (qualcuno mi ucciderà per questo, ma non voleva essere niente di serio), però non sono sicuro di esserne soddisfatto:

Lo scorso 23 giugno è scomparso all'improvviso Claudio Capone: una delle più grandi voci italiane del mondo del doppiaggio e, soprattutto, il grande accompagnatore vocale di migliaia di servizi e documentari di Quark e programmi similari. Con quelle trasmissioni, e con quei documentari, sono cresciuto ed ho sviluppato il mio amore per la natura e la scienza. E per me la sua voce era arte.

I documentari non saranno più gli stessi senza di te. Addio Claudio, e grazie di tutto. :(
