Atlas Sound's Maybe Logic (May Be Awesome)

Since the MediaFire debacle of 2008, Atlas Sound's remained relatively under the radar...until yesterday.

Maybe Logic, Atlas' latest virtual 7", was released to the masses yesterday on the Deerhunter Blog.

"Maybe Logic," the first of two tracks, is simply..trippy. "Maybe Logic" pays homage to 70s Beatles-esque psychedelia while still preserving Atlas' signature languidness.

"Airedales" is my favorite of the two. Light and playful, the tune is much more up beat that the typical Atlas song, making it pleasantly surprising.

Gimme Tinnitus showed me something that got me all excited yesterday... A collab (read: download link) to a split EP between Jay Reatard and Deerhunter. Jay covered Fluorescent Grey, and whilst I'm not too keen on the cover Jay did, it's still pretty sweet. It is my favourite Deerhunter song though, so it never had a chance, to be fair. 3ish weeks until hardcopies of Microcastle, kids!

St Jeromes is getting announced late September... oh wait. Dudes, what the fuck? Let me know if I'm going to have to spend my money on travelling to see somewhat amazing bands in a smelly lane.

I'm an increasingly big fan of Atlas Sound, Bradford Cox's (of Deerhunter) solo project. He's one of a few indie artists that I think are actually doing something kind of original. That said, this track reminds me quite a bit of Sung Tongs Animal Collective (but maybe I just like jumping to that conclusion). It took me a couple listens to get into it, but I like the track.

I so infrequently enjoy Ambient Punk at my leisure. It just doesn't really come up much.

"This just in... Ambient Punk is attacking the hearts of mind of youthful party goers across the country! We're in store for more Ambient Punk than we're going to know what to do with!"

The term ambient punk comes from Deerhunter's crazy lead singer Bradford Cox, seen here wearing a dress:

To me it doesn't sound ambient as much as punk music I can listen to without getting a headache.

Deerhunter - Microcastle

Als in de VS de wieken van de geruchtenmolen draaien, waait het stof tot over de oceaan. En over Deerhunter wordt er wel degelijk gesproken in de virtuele wandelgangen. ‘Microcastle’ is pas de eerste cd van de groep die in Europa (voor zover daar tegenwoordig nog sprake van is) op de markt wordt gebracht, maar de groep bestaat al van in 2001 en heeft al twee andere albums op zijn conto staan.

Bezig baasje, die Bradford Cox. Niet alleen ligt hij aan de basis van dit Deerhunter, als Atlas Sound maakt hij ook nog eens verkapte soloplaten. Ook Lockett Pundt, gitarist, toetsenist en occasioneel zanger (Agoraphobia en Neither Of Us, Uncertainly met name), houdt zich naast deze band ook nog eens bezig met Lotus Plaza. Om maar te zeggen dat dit gezelschap zijn creativiteit op meerdere manieren kwijt kan.

Ambient punk noemen ze het brouwsel waar ze bij uitgekomen zijn. En bij nader inzien is dat nog zo’n slechte omschrijving niet. Opener Cover Me is zo’n voorbeeld van een Sonic Youthachtig soundscape. Gitaren waaieren doorheen een bos van echo zonder dat enige stemmen de rust komen verstoren.

Merkwaardig is wel dat de titel van dat nummer en de nodige varianten daarop (“comfort me, come for me, …”) het refrein van het daaropvolgende Agoraphobia uitmaken. Dit en de volgende nummers zouden dan onder punk moeten vallen. Vanwege de pertinente weigering om doordeweekse nummers te maken, is dat ook te begrijpen. Klasseer ze echter eerder onder indierock, ook al heeft Cox een hartsgrondige hekel aan die omschrijving.

Het album kent een soort van golfbeweging. Na de soundscapes van de opener volgen enkele meer uptempo songs, die ongetwijfeld de goedkeuring zullen wegdragen van de liefhebber van eigenwijze en originele popmuziek. Met het titelnummer lijkt de weegschaal dan weer over te hellen naar de andere kant. Voorlopig is dat nog maar schijn want zowat halverwege gaat het gepietepeuter over in een rockend alter ego.

Calvary Scars (let op de snoeischaar op de achtergrond), Green Jacket en Activa laten de aandacht verslappen en lijken je in slaap te wiegen. Maar met Nothing Ever Happened en Saved By Old Times wordt er weer vaart achter gezet. Neither Of Us, Uncertainly en afsluiter Twilight At Carbon Lake zweven daar dan weer ergens tussenin, maar blijven bijzonder interessant vanwege het gebruik van vreemde gitaar- en andere effecten.

De golf lijkt dan weer over zijn hoogtepunt heen te zijn, al blijkt er uiteindelijk toch nog wat venijn in de staart te zitten. Opnieuw zijn er de overstuurde en van feedback doordrenkte gitaren die deze plaat van een gepast einde voorzien.

‘Microcastle’ is een interessante plaat, al is het maar door de vreemde wendingen die er genomen worden. Het houdt de cd boeiend en zelfs tijdens het geneuzel blijf je uitkijken naar wat nog volgen moet.

These tie together quite nicely, as Reatard covered the Deerhunter song on one of his recent limited edition 7 inches (which have, by the way, been neatly compiled for an October release on Matador).

In April last year I described the Deerhunter track as "a wonderful slow burning gem set to an urgent rhythm track and adorned with chiming guitars, breathy backing vocals and, towards the climax, a haze of buzzing guitars, nestled low in the mix." For some reason, I subsequently forgot to listen to it again, but thanks to Reatard I've rediscovered its simple pleasures.

Speaking of Jay Reatard, he's no slouch when it comes to songwriting either. In fact he's possibly the only man who's more prolific than Bradford Cox. The lead track from the upcoming Matador Singles '08 album, "See/Saw", is as a pretty much perfect three-minute garage-punk tune. Download it now, thank me later.
