Homecoming was two weekends ago, and I decided at the last minute that I was going to be going home. It was a nice change of pace and a relaxing weekend.  Friday afternoon I went to the parade and then to the game later that day. The game was pretty intense, the game was stopped for 30 minutes because of lightning but the we ended up winning 21-20! It was nice seeing my family and some of my friends! Other than that my weekend was filled with homework and laying on the couch.

I left early on Monday morning and headed back to la crosse for classes. Classes seemed like they went on forever the next weekend was Applefest.  Finally thursday came and I left early so that I could meet my mom in superior and watch the Ashland High school boy soccer game. I got in to town and had dinner with amy and then we headed to the game.  The varsity won and the jv tied so they were pretty good games.  I was so tired that night I when to school as soon as we got home.

Friday! Derek and Sarah were coming from Minneapolis, Amy and her Superior were coming, jack from stout, and many other friends! During the day i worked on some homework and that night every come to my house and we all hung out and caught up with everyone.  

Saturday... Rissa came over that morning and Sarah, Rissa and I made pancakes for breakfast! After lazing around for a while we all decided to get ready for the day then go to the black cat for some tasty coffee! Sarah and I ended up taking a long time getting ready so by the time we went to the black cat it was lunch time. I was really excited for pizza and I had my pizza all ordered up and then they told me they were out of pizza crust... i was soooo disappointed because last time I was at the black cat they were out of pizza crust. So we ended up getting some nachos! In the afternoon Sarah and I took senior pictures for Ali, Rissa and Apyrl.  It was really exciting and I think that we got a few good pictures. That night we hot tubbed and then hung out until bedtime. 

Sunday.... We took senior pic of Gustav and Felix foreign exchanges students! Felix is living with my family.... he took over my room! and Gustav is the Kinney's but pretty much lives at my house! Those two are so funny! After that we headed to Applefest!!! I got my carmel apple! and watched the parade! We meet Amy and her friends there and walked around and got some mini donuts, sprial spud and cheese curds. We then decided we were all really hungry and wanted good food some we (derek, rissa, sarah, and I) to head back to ashland and eat at the pizza pub.  Pizza was tasty but then it was time to say goodbye... Amy and her friends headed back right after applefest and derek and sarah headed back after dinner.  It was an amazing weekend. 

I don't have class until 1 on mondays so i headed back to La Crosse early Monday morning.  Back to school :( I had a speech to give on wednesday that I was pretty nervous about but it ended up not being that bad. I did it on Applefest so it was a topic that I was interested in. Then thursday I had an economics test... which was a little harder but I think I did okay. -fingers crossed

Finally friday: no class Today is a day of relaxing and doing some homework.  I headed to Peaberry's for dinner and had a wonderful hawaiian pizza. This weekend I hope to take some pictures and have some time for myself.

Richard needs an attitude adjustment.  Just because the hospital slipped down to 12th, doesn't mean he gets to be a major asshole.  Speaking of assholes, what is wrong with Derek?  He thinks that since he is moving in with Mer that Alex and Izzie need to move out?  Where does he get off?  And this hospital flooding thing is so freaking stupid.  Is this what happens when they're working on Grey's and Private Practice?  I won't stop watching unless it gets to the point where I don't care about the characters, you know like ER.  I might watch that series finale just to say that i did, but i'm not sure that i even care.  So many people have come and gone from that show since the beginning that it makes my head spin.

Izzie wants to move in with Christina.  Those two would kill each other!  BTW where's LT hottie from the 1st epi?  Aussielo from EW says that he's signed on for  several episodes that season, and he is rarely wrong about these things.  He and Christina has such great chemistry, much better than her and Burke.  Does anyone remember the rummor floating around during the writer's strike that Joshua Jackson was going to come on as Christina's love interest?  I keep trying to picture them together, and I don't see it.  He is way too good looking for her.  Plus, he is really good on Fringe. He definitely has that snarky thing down.  I loved him on Dawson's Creek (when I was interested enough to watch--and even then I did it only because I loved Pacey and Joey).  I cheered so loudly when Pacey and Joey ended up together in the end.  Although the show was Dawson's Creek, I never really liked Dawson.  He was so fickle, never knowing if he wanted Joey or Jenn.  Honestly, Jenn was perfect for him.

Could this episode be any more boring?  Christina is not allowed to have an opinion?  Since when?  This so won't last very long.  She will crack if she doesn't tell Mer what to do.  "You're a terrible shrink." Best line of the whole episode.

Has anyone seen the British version of Life on Mars.  My aunt loved to watch it on BBC-America, and she's hoping that our version will be good.  Honestly, it looks rather ridiculous.  I like sci-fi, and I am a big fan of Quantum Leap reruns.  However, I don't think that this show will last very long.  Chances are that it will be another Coupling.

"That ceiling crash saved your life"?  Give me a break!  They just don't want to be sued!  And poor George!  He still hasn't taken his resident test.  Izzie is such an idiot.  She definitely led Christina to believe she was showing her that flier out of the goodness of her heart.

Does anyone think that Mark and Lexie would make a good couple?  There is a bit of chemistry there, more than she has with George, at least.

Well, I have to start logging off.  I've got class at 8:15 tomorrow morning, so I've got to get up at 5:30.

This is my friend Derek!!! He is literally one of my absolute FAVOURITE people to be in the presence of! He is an absolute delight & revels in using fun words just like I am (like the word electrophoresis, for example)... so i have a blast & a half talking to him. He has a huge heart & a killer smile to go along with it [this photo does not do his smile justice, but he's fierce too!], and his laugh is contagious. We got to hang out with Chapstique and the rest of the Family Force 5 guys again at the Jewish Mother, the tiniest venue EVER at the beach, last night. it was packed to the brim, the building was shaking, and we had the time of our lives. They are the definition of FUN and their new songs are PHENOMENAL live.

]]> <![CDATA[Sum 41 - Underclass Hero (album review)]]> http://northernlabs.wordpress.com/?p=316 Tue, 07 Oct 2008 19:07:05 +0000 MaSh http://northernlabs.it.wordpress.com/2008/10/07/sum-41-underclass-hero-album-review/ Sum 41 were signed by Island Records in 1999 on the wave of pop-punk inspired by Greenday and Blink 182, and were just as likeable and had similar sounds and even had the trademark pop-punk comical music videos, but for whatever reason, never had the same success as other bands that were around at the time. Perhaps this is to Greenday and Blink’s credit showing how good they were to all but eclipse Sum 41 from the spotlight. Since back then, Sum 41 have lost a member after releasing their previous album, 2004’s Chuck. Dave Baksh (guitar) left in May on good terms with the rest of the band, but was seeking to further his career with Brown Brigade, his more classical metal sounding band. Sum 41 drafted in a temporary guitarist for touring, although only the main trio will appear in videos, photo shoots etc. After I heard the single and titletrack of the new album, Underclass Hero, I remember thinking that this was going to be Sum 41’s crowning achievement. You see, to me at least, Sum 41 are a band who have always been on the edge of greatness, with loads of potential but never achieving it. 2001’s All Killer No Filler album was excellent and is the bands most successful album to date, but it hasn’t been equalled by other attempts since. After a few listens to their new album Underclass Hero, here’s what I think.

Like I said, after hearing the titletrack Underclass Hero, I was confident that the Sum 41 of old was back; I was looking forward to edgy, fast tracks with influences of metal, punk and rap in the mix. Anyone who remembers Fat Lip or Motivation will know what I mean. This is what Underclass Hero does well. Tracks such as Underclass Hero, Pull The Curtain, and King Of The Contradiction remind you why Sum 41 could have been legends rather than just a great band. On the downside, or perhaps upside depending on personal tastes, there is a distinct melodic feel to many of the songs which I wasn’t expecting. True, on previous albums there have been melodies which added some variety, but they dominate on the new album. Is married life to Avril Lavigne taking its toll on Derek? (guitar, vocals, piano/keyboard, writing & producing) because he seems a lot more soppy and emotional than ever before, most notably in The Long Goodbye, which sounds like a rip-off of Greenday’s mostly acoustic guitar sounding, Time Of Your Life. While I am confident some fans (mainly female ones) will love the new sounds, I have a feeling that others like me will miss the lack of metal on the album. It’s too early to judge how it has been received by other fans of course, but to me, my initial joy turned into slight disappointment.

The album seems to be very hit-and-miss with its confusing mix of melodies and rock tracks. The album isn’t even structured in a way to show changes. It leaps from high tempo 100mph tracks to turtle paced soothing ballads. Even the track order/listing seems a bit confusing as most bands put the best songs at the start, and apart from track 1 (Underclass Hero) the songs tend to get better towards the end. So while some songs are great, others are, frankly, a bit dull and seem more suited to Take That. Perhaps in the past it was always Dave who gave the band a firm metal edge? That said, there is enough to satisfy fans both old and new, and while Sum 41 haven’t achieved greatness just yet, I think it’s fair to say the album has been a success.

Learning and Teaching Scotland - the main organisation for the development of the curriculum - analysed the effect of a "brain training" game. It also found improvements in pupils' concentration and behaviour.

The study involved more than 600 pupils in 32 schools across Scotland using the Brain Training from Dr Kawashima game on the Nintendo DS every day. The project followed a pilot study in Dundee last year.

LTS worked with Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education and the University of Dundee to see if the pilot results were replicated on a wider scale.

 

Improved scores

 

A group of pupils played the game, which included reading tests, problem-solving exercises and memory puzzles, for 20 minutes at the start of their class for nine weeks. A control group continued their lessons in a more traditional manner. The pupils were tested at the beginning and then the end of the study. Researchers found that while all groups had improved their scores, the group using the game had improved by a further 50%. The time taken to complete the tests also dropped by five minutes, from 18.5 minutes to 13.5 minutes. The improvement in the games group was double that of the control group.

Less able children were found to be more likely to improve than the highest attainers and almost all pupils had an increased perception of their own ability. The study also found that it made no difference if the children had the game at home and noted no difference in ability between girls or boys.

It found improvements in absence and lateness in some classes. Derek Robertson, LTS's national adviser for emerging technologies and learning, said the results offered the first independent, academic evidence that this type of computer game could improve attainment when used in an educational context.

He said: "Computer games help flatten out the hierarchy that exists in schools - they are in the domain of the learner as opposed to the domain of the school. "This intervention encouraged all children to engage and get success in a different contextual framework; one in which they don't know their place."

Wednesday, Derek and I decided to try something different for dinner so we headed out to our favorite, way over-priced, grocery store called Fresh Market.  We picked up some fresh salmon, dill, cucumber and a few other things and headed back home to make one of the most delicious salmon dishes I've ever tasted.  I don't know what a good name for it yet is, so I will just call it A la Derok.  Derek whipped up some A la Derok for us and we moved our awesome dinning room table so that we could see the tv in the living room.  (we rented a movie)

Now normally we will plop down on the couch & use the coffee table as our dining surface, but we were feeling fancy!  So, we turned the table to see the TV, got out the fancy napkins, started "Lars and the Real Girl" in the x-box, and enjoyed our delicious A la Derok salmon.  I can't wait to have more nights like that with Derek.  We have so much fun together.

.....Oh yeah, I forgot the funniest part.  The entire time we were eating, you could see two little puppy dog noses poking up from the othere side of the table, furiously sniffing and taking in that great samon smell.

"Dream a Little Dream of Me"

I implore you, faithful readers: if you can find a single person who cares more about Meredith and Derek than they do about the newly arrived Kevin McKidd, or the three tragic couplings who populated this week's episode, I commend your sleuthing skills.

I'm not exactly what one would call a Grey's Anatomy superfan by any stretch of the imagination, but it's one of those shows I keep watching if only to see what Shonda Rhimes does to step it up from her past mistakes. She is a good showrunner, it seems, but one who has on too many occasions as of late hit on the wrong notes for her main characters. Whether it was stretch out Meredith and Derek for too long, the complete and utter mess that was George and Izzie, or even the continued fall-out from Isaiah Washington's departure, a show that was once a dramatic heavyweight needed three dying men, three adulterous, emotionally distraught, or brain damaged wives, and a suave new field surgeon love interest for Christina in order to make this season premiere feel anything like a premiere.

That she succeeded is in fact perhaps the most frustrating thing of all: it shows that she can write, just apparently not for the people we need to deal with every week.

With the considerable talent of Kathy Baker and Bernadette Peters anchoring the case, there was indeed something very emotionally powerful about the story of three husbands and three wives whose icy trip to the fancy gala was interrupted by their respective traumas. There's a lot of death in this episode, if we're counting two people as death - there's a lot of the episode that deals with "stark reality" and our need to be aware that not everything is going to end up like the fairy tale that we envision. It's not a new lesson for the show, but when it ends with Izzie and Denny's dream reunion in the face of Alex shuffling off with some hussy, it is something that the show sort of needs.

Izzie needed it, mainly: she gets to carry the episodes most tragic elements, as Alan Sepinwall runs down over at What's Alan Watching:

But every minute of [the season's contrived main storylines - ed.] was worth it for the moment when Izzie (and you know how much I hate Izzie) started counting to 30 after Mariette Hartley woke up from surgery, then realized that this woman would spend the rest of her life having to be told, over and over and over, that her husband was dead...

There's something about that final moment that isn't tinged with that usual sense that this loss has made people stronger: in fact, even after Izzie decides to change the bad news to good news, it's still tragic because now it's just a perpetuated lie. When we leave the episode, the images we leave with are of two couples coming to terms with their new realities (either a bankrupt and cheating husband or reconnecting with your husband after having been responsible for said cheating) all while their friends are either dead or stuck in this terrible endless loop.

And if we don't leave with that, we leave with Kevin McKidd's entrance (and a good one, at that) as a brawny army surgeon who shows up to assist in the procedures while making googly eyes with Christina. The show does go too far at making him out to be hardcore, but McKidd is game, and by the time he's staring into Christina's eyes while pulling out the icicle that so conveniently fell into her abdomen at the midway point in the premiere you want him to stick around. Rumour has it that the crew was so happy with the chemistry between him and the cast that they're doing their darndest to get him to stick around, and this is a good thing: his disruptive influence made Callie test out new waters, made the Chief start to put together that perhaps they need to be a bit more aggressive, and also got Christina to break out of her post-Burke funk.

The other major thread is that clear meta-commentary about the hospital falling in the rankings of teaching hospitals - of course, the show is really talking about how they have fallen from the top of the ratings heap to, well, below NCIS. It actually provided some of the episode's best moments, Hahn quizzing everyone on their teaching methods after feeling self-conscious after being called out for not teaching Christina well enough last season. Just as she was trying too hard, though, to prove that she was trying, the show felt like it was trying just all in the wrong places. You won't have strong guest stars every week: your cast needs to be able to carry the weight...or, more accurately, they need to be given the right weight to carry.

For example, I like where we're taking Lexie, primarily because I find Chyler Leigh to be the most engaging person left on this show. She's just got this innocence about her, so her adoration of George doesn't seem too reductionist to her character depth considering how they were leaning towards this at the end of last season. And I found, at the very least, that Izzie's idealistic image of Alex this week did serve to kind of give her that glimmer of hope before crushing it again, nicely tying into the episode's theme. Plus, Christina continues to stand out from the rest of the cast quite easily.

But everything else just isn't all that interesting, realistic or likeable. Sloane's nothing but a joke, Hahn and Callie's relationship is a contrived farce, and the entire Derek and Rose situation went from awkward to downright ridiculous this week with her fake pregnancy joke. The thing is, all three of these have some redeeming qualities: Hahn and Callie's revelation at episode's end was the culmination of a very subtle build all episode (While the "life lessons for doctors via patient care" lines were clear for most characters, Callie's was a slow reveal), Sloane is actually quite good at being comic relief, and Rose bowing out in the way she did was classy if not quite as classy as this perfectly innocent character deserved for being caught in the mess that is Derek and Meredith.

And that mess is our problem: she's a neurotic mess, he's bland and uninteresting, and the combination of the two of them just isn't making for entertaining television. I feel like we don't need their drama, anymore: I don't care if they move in together, and I (like Christina) would pay Shonda Rhimes to stop talking about them. Send them off on a shotgun wedding, and then a three-year honeymoon, and see how the people who get nominated for Emmys and get commended for strong supporting work step up to the plate and give this show some of its verve back.

In the meantime, you have a show that pulled out all of the stops to feel eventful: something tells me this won't hold week by week.

Cultural Observations

  • I was watching this with a group of people much closer to the Grey's Superfan level, and all of them seemed really underwhelmed by it - I don't know if it was that all of the "shocking" things kept getting pulled away like the moles in Whack-A-Mole, but it just didn't grab them in any kind of way. It makes me wonder if the premiere was designed too much to appeal to people with more of a critical eye, and maybe turned off some hardcore fans?
  • It's really weird seeing a drama series return from the summer and be in the middle of winter - the show's timeline has always been so screwy, and that was especially clear in this episode (not that it's not allowed to be screwy, but I'm not exactly living in constant fear of falling icicles at the moment is all).

(Gentlemen, put down your trenchers! Stop fixing the roof! Don’t even think about being nice by running the dishwasher or vacuuming.) We NEED to know what happens to Meredith and Derek. Will Izzy and Alex hook up for good? Does George pass his exam and finally become a resident? Forget current events or a quest for world peace. Tonight, all eyes will be turned to Seattle Grace and the sudsy drama inside.

Eye Candy

Grey’s provides as much eye candy as it does plot. The storylines and medical scenarios are a bit far fetched most of the time, but I watch to escape, not to be reminded of dreary reality. Part of the reason Grey’s Anatomy is easy on the eyes are the custom-made scrubs worn by the interns, residents, attending physicians and nurses. You can buy scrubs modeled after the Grey’s Anatomy workwear from various online retailers. Unfortunately, though, even the “Grey’s Anatomy Scrubs” offered on the official website won’t make you look like Ellen Pompeo or Patrick Dempsey. Sorry!

Scrubs that Actually Work

Rocco DiSpirito: We were glad to see that Karina Smirnoff was still able to wear a barely there dress despite all the pasta the celebrity chef appeared to be feeding her-mainly because this duo's going to need all the help they can get, considering DiSpirito couldn't land a toe-heel lead to save his life. All of which makes us wonder, did Smirnoff sprain her ankle on purpose? Judges Said: 14; "A fox-trot on the brink of chaos," per Bruno. Toni Braxton: It was a bit nerve-racking watching the 40-year-old singer after she revealed that she had recently been diagnosed with microvascular angina, which occurs when not enough oxygen is making it into the heart. But Braxton's body rivals the female pros and she cha-cha'd like a natural, curing our stage fright in one session.

This could finally be Alec Mazo's chance to reclaim that season-one glory. Judges Said: 22; "Everybody knows I like my divas-slinky, sultry, sexy-and you are all of that," Bruno growled. Maurice Green: The Olympic track star started off in the middle of the pack, ably dancing a fox-trot but not necessarily to the extent that we think Cheryl Burke will be winning another disco ball any time soon. But we know that Green's feet can really fly on a good day, so if he survives to dance a mambo tomorrow, it'll give us a better sense of what he's capable of.

Judges Said: 18; "I feel like I should call you Mo James Brown," Carrie Ann offered. : The 37-year-old mother of four (including a 6-month-old) has moves to spare and a tummy to envy. Suited up in skintight pants, Burke didn't suffer from the stiffness that has afflicted DWTS' past model contestants, such as Josie Maran and Paulina Porizkova. Instead, she gave Derek Hough his first-ever week one lead by trotting out a graceful, sexy cha-cha.

Judges Said: 23; best dance of the night. Ted McGinley: The 50-year-old Married With Children star could have been the of the bunch, but instead the handsome actor donned a tux and proved a dashing partner for DWTS newcomer Inna Brayer. Sure, there were mistakes and there was a bit of a sitcom dream-sequence element to it. But unlike Rocco, the man knows how to lead with his toes. Judges Said: 18; "At moments you had the elegance of Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief-and then you turned into in Get Smart," per Bruno. : First off, there was some butt-kicking choreography from former So You Think You Can Dance finalist Lacey Schwimmer, a welcome addition to the pro fold and Hough's main rival for resident hot young thang.

As for Bass…;Worst dancer in 'N Sync, our foot. The 29-year-old popster fulfilled all of his boy-band potential and more, instantly becoming a front-runner by acing a technically complicated, hot 'n' sexy cha-cha right off the bat. They should have received a 24, but Len Goodman is a fuddy-duddy. Judges Said: 22; "A cha-cha-cha for now!" Bruno declared. Cloris Leachman: Flashing some intense cleavage in a gorgeous blue gown, the Oscar-winning 82-year-old is the oldest contestant the show has ever had.

While Leachman could easily prove to be a fan favorite, especially for those who always enjoyed watching their grandparents cut a rug, there technically isn't much to watch, dancewise. But we recommend keeping her around, if for no other reason than we feel she's the contestant most likely to drop an F-bomb on live TV. Judges Said: 16; "I've always wanted to be a [boy-toy], and this could be my chance!" said Len. And there's no need for Carrie Ann to fret-Leachman and partner Corky Ballas (Mark's dad) have a combined age of 129.

Jeffrey Ross: Edyta Sliwinska needed more than her legwarmers-and-nothing-else ensemble to salvage this cha-cha. The curse began early this year, as the stand-up comedian and Friars Club roastmaster needed a trip to the emergency room earlier Monday after getting poked in the eye during rehearsal. So, we'll just blame his scratched cornea for his lack of coordination…yup.
