Not sure how to solve this problem, except maybe with a big single picture that links to the gallery. Any thoughts?

Our new site goes live tomorrow.

So far today I have discovered that the search and archive don't work, we've got no control over our RSS feeds and we can't use any iframes wider than 320 pixels because of the mandatory content panels that run down the right of the page... which makes embedding dipity timelimes sort of a waste of time.

But we'll try it anyway...

I like the structure and options, but I will be careful with jugdement, I just started using Dipity. When you look at the design it reminds you of Plurk, yes, but...there are few alternative views avaialable (depending on content, I guess): timeline, flipbook (for visuals), list, map. You can zoom in and out on the timeline to see the trends. It's 'embedable' and 'share-able'. And most important, you can feed to Dipity from major social media sites:

This is how my profile looks like after adding few sources.

I will keep an eye on it. Looks like soon you will be able to send tweets from here too.

Once again thanks to AltSearchEngines and TechCrunch for their early reviews of Dipity.com and Dipity2.0 released on October 2nd. The redesign of Dipity2.0 brings a host of new features and increased social interaction

Dippity is about letting users follow updates from the people and topics they care about, and have fun doing it. (BK Gupta)

So what is Dipity - and what can you do with it? Dipity is a social feed aggregator; web and topic searching tool; topic/news updating service....and much more. Dipity allows the user to

Follow friends and friends feeds (start by importing your twitter contacts)

Search the web (Dipity will search the web for the most popular content - and keep you posted on new developments concerning the topic)

Follow RSS feeds (drop your favorite RSS feed into your lifestream)

Create and share your very own Dipity Channel

Dipity organizes updates from sites like YouTube, WordPress and Twitter as well as 7500 news sites into “channels” on an interactive timeline. Users create 'personal channels' (lifestreams) from popular social sites like Twitter, Pandora, or Flickr to broadcast updates to their friends, and can start a channel about anything from Aalborg to zygapophysis in just a few seconds.

Social interactivity has been transformed with the re-design. Simply sync your Twitter friends as Dipity friends to immediately start following feeds. Share the Dipity channel well as being able to follow friends, your dipity search channel has been made very easy to share. Twitter messaging is soon to be intergrated to enhance the medium of micro-blogging to the site.

View your followed topics and friends on a sliding timeline; as a Flipbook; in list format or on a world map - in full screen, browser view or as a widget.

Great stuff from the Dipity crew - enjoying my early interactions with the user interface and looking forward to twittering from the home page and really getting to grips with the enhanced features.

Early days in the review of this site - but I love it. Great interactivity, rapid and responsive timeline with great graphics and visual markers. The enhanced interface holds the user on course to explore their chosen topic, only to drift through pixelated threads to wash up on some far distant surfing shore…

Dipity 2.0: i servizi supportati

Are you using Dipity? One of my friend invited me to this social network. At a glance, there are some similarities with Plurk, especially its timeline concept but there are more features at Dipity.

You can use Dipity to create and share interactive timelines about any subject or topic. It allows students to embed You Tube videos, Twitter, RSS feeds, Blogger, flickr, Picasa, Last FM, and more right into their timelines.

Dipity makes timelines relevant and fun for students and best of all, you are creating timelines in “their language” of Digital Native. The timelines are cool, unlike traditional paper/pencil timeline!

Though I have yet to try it out, Dipity has the potential to be huge if enough people catch theh viral bug and start sharing interactive timelines about the people and things they care about.

At the moment, I am a bit overwhelmed. Plurk itself is a huge time drainer for me; when you chat, it can get addictive and there are important things like updating the blog which goes unattended.

Anybody has tried Dipity and can shed more insight here? Does this network has the potential to take off?

Last week I asked sixth graders to share what they like to do with their computers at home. Of course the typical answers came up: messaging (almost unanimously with AIM), social networking (MySpace, Facebook, and even one hi5), and believe it or not schoolwork was a popular answer. Specifically history. Every class that I worked with said the same thing: they like using their computers to study history. I love history too and the web is full of rich information on historical events. It's true, the history teacher has the most to celebrate with the most articles, videos, and tools to explore their topic. I found a new tool that makes me wish I was a history teacher: Dipity.

Dipity is a timeline tool that is web-based, free, and collaborative. Each point on the timeline can include text, images, and streamed video. It's easy to use and produces beautifully interactive timelines. I don't need to tout the merits of building timelines to help students have a chronological frame of reference for events because you know that already. But this web-based tool really takes it to the next level with interactive digital timelines that can have multiple contributors, images, videos, maps, and links to wikipedia articles (or any website for that matter) -- all wrapped up in an attractive easy to use interface.

In my search through the stored timelines, I found one about the conflict in Darfur. Check it out because it's a perfect example of how powerful timelines especially when they're rich in media like this one. With news videos, photos, and maps chronicling the events, the Darfur Conflict comes alive. In the classroom, the ability to assign this as a collaborative project lets them work at school and at home.

Check it out and while you're add it, notice that they're getting ready to launch Dipity 2.0 which tracks your Twitter, Facebook, Blog, Flickr, and other web streams for a timeline of your digital footprint. http://www.dipity.com

Finding a lot of uses for the web tool Dipity - and it seems plenty of others are too. If you haven't seen it yet, this a neat way to create interactive timelines.

I like it for the following reasons;

1. It's so easy to use. Both to create content and to interact with. I've found it very intuitive.

2. Versatile. Video, pictures and text is easily interchangeable by manually adding content or you can simply plug in a RSS feed and let the content automatically update.

2. Controllable. Can set it to be one editor (i.e. the creator) who controls it or for multiple authors.

3. Easy to share. It integrates well with other platforms. I've embedded it into our templated work pages and sent the links below automatically to this blog.

Just two imperfections I've encountered so far. 1. couldn't get the embed code to work on this blog. A twitter user recommends adding a word, any word, in between the tags to fix that. 2. Every page refresh, addition etc. adds up as a page view - good for the ego maybe but not reliable enough. Hoping these glitches will be sorted in the next promised release.

I've created three timelines, called topics in the Dipity world, which you can see here: http://www.dipity.com/user/sarahhartley

One is fed from my food blog, one is fed by the mutiple users of the MEN Flickr picture group and the other is a mix of newspaper, television and transport authority content to track the progression of Manchester's proposed Congestion Charge scheme.

So far so good and I'm sure there'll be plenty more journalistic uses for it in the coming months.

I see that journalists on other newspapers are already well on with the use of this too. Below are great examples from Liverpool and Birmingham.

20/08: Diary of a day in the life of Liverpool

Gun and knife crime in the Birmingham area

Posted using ShareThis

If you've been using this tool, please add to a link to your example below - we can build up a map of maps. A Dipity day.

Thanks to the lovely people at Dipity, which I used to knock up a map of knife and gun killings in the West Midlands recently. (here)

Originally, Dipity's inbuilt Google map thing used a custom icon as a marker - a cheery little fellow with a smile and a flag.

I mentioned on a feedback site that this made it rather hard to use for a professional-type service, particularly about something as sombre as murder.

Within a few hours, the Dipity team had got back to me, agreed, and changed the icon to its current generic form. With this barrier removed, the timeline/map could go straight up on www.birminghampost.net, where it's happily residing now.

You can't imagine this happening with the latest MS release.

Thanks Dipity!

Over the last few days a number of people have asked for information on Dipity or the link to Route to Zero timeline I use in presentations, or have set up timelines such as Paul on his EvolutionExtranet and for be2camp.

Dipity is incredibly easy to use and allows the aggregation of a number of sources ( news feeds, google searches, RSS feeds from blogs etc) into one timeline, as a flip book, a list or even as a google map. It provides a great and quick way to search through any topic, following the news or developments.

It also provide a futures timeline potential, either as a organisational planning tool, or a futures foresight approach. I am working with an organisation to visually map out their business plans, intentions, strategies or milestones, and in discussion with a construction project to record progress on site. This is an obvious use of timelines, as the Walter Mill Ateliers project demonstrates

By crikey, that took longer than I thought it would. Below is a timeline of every gig I think I've ever played throughout my not-exactly-enormous musical career with two bands. I'm planning on working my way through annotating it with memories from every show, and then adding every gig I've promoted on top of there too, but this is enough for one night. Perhaps if any members of bands I've played in are reading

and know of anything I've got wrong, they could let me know (Mark...?).

Observations:

1) I've played more gigs than I thought I had - around 120. I seem to have let my 100th gig go past unnoticed at the pub round the corner from my house, just before Christmas a couple of years ago. Officially a seasoned pro.

2) Bands come and go SO FREQUENTLY. Looking back at the names of bands who were tipped for 'the top' from four or five years ago is fascinating just to see how many lasted six months and died, only to reform with slightly different lineups. Admittedly, this might suggest that we should have GIVEN UP by now, but hey, why stop when you're enjoying it?

3) I can remember so much about almost every gig, like when you catch a whiff of something you haven't smelt for years and it all comes back. I can practically smell the post-stripper baby oil from the dressing room at the White Horse, although thankfully not the vomit from chucking up in my bag post-gig one time.

4) I really should be better at playing my instruments than I am.

5) I've had A LOT of fun. I adore playing gigs, except for when they go wrong of course. More of which to come.

6) I really have far too much time on my hands if I've got time to do this...

Unfortunately Wordpress doesn't allow the use of iframe tags at the moment apparently, so you'll have to go over here to see the timeline.

5. Das Internet zeigt mir, was andere Wissen.

I couldn't get the timeline to embed here but if you click the image you'll get to see the real thing. For another (better) example take a look at Brian's original Dipity post.

My example is set so that only I can edit it but you can open it up to others for some collaborative timelining!

Dipity allows for users to collate together a variety of RSS feeds from services such Twitter, Flickr and SlideShare, and allow for their display on a visual, interactive timeline. I'm having a few issues with not being able to customise certain elements of the tool, but as with most Web 2.0 services at the moment, it's probably still in some kind of beta. As Andy has already suggested, one potential use of this tool might be an informal way for a University community to keep an eye on the activities of the e-Learning Team. This might also be an excellent way of collecting together contributions from people at conferences who have blogged or Twittered using a particular tag.

For the Innovation Competition at the IWMW 2007 event I created a timeline of IWMW events using MIT

For the Innovation Competition at the IWMW 2007 event I created a timeline of IWMW events using MIT's SImile software. This software is being used to drive a number of timeline displays, such as the example created by Frankie Roberto at the recent Mashed Museum 08 event.

The Simile software is not, however, all that easy for a non-developer to use. So I was pleased to recently come across the Web-based Dipity service for creating and visualising timelines. I used this to create a timeline of IWMW events, which can be accessed on the Dipity Web site. It has also been embedded on the UKOLN Web site. An image of the interface is shown below.

In addition to providing a timeline of the annual event from 1997-2008 I also included photos from Flickr which had been tagged with 'iwmw2008'. And as the service allows not only uploads from various popular Web 2.0 services (Flickr, YouTube, etc.) but also from any RSS feed I realised that I could also add the news feed for IWMW 2008 and details of the plenary talks, which is also available as an RSS file.

The timeline of the IWMW 2008 News provides a visual display of the public announcements such as when the Web site was set up, the call for speakers announced, the event opened for bookings, etc. The display of the timetable for the plenary talks can provide a similar overview - but in this case the times are not necessarily accurate, due to the complexities of time zones (I haven't yet established whether this is a limitation of the Dipity service or the data I use).

More importantly, though, is the danger of data lock-in when using a service such as this, together with the question of the sustainability of the Dipity company -especially as a Crunchbase article on Dipity fails to provide any evidence of investment in the company.

The approach I have taken is to steer clear of making significant use of the data entry form for the service - and initially I thought that it wasn't possible to export data added to the system, although I subsequently discovered an RSS feed for my timeline - although this does not appear to be documented. As a general principle, however, I would be concerned if my data is locked into an application, and lost if the service failed to be sustainable or if I wanted to migrate my data to an alternative service.

However as Dipity allows data to be imported from RSS feeds I am able to have my managed RSS feeds as the master source for my data, thus reducing the risks of data loss to any minor tweaks I may make to the data within the Dipity service.

So if you regard Dipity as a visualisation tool for data which is managed elsewhere, I would suggest that the service can provide a very useful way of displaying data.

As I was poking around the Google YouTube API researching a side project, I stumbled upon this cool timeline widget by Dipity. There seems to be an endless amount of these "widget companies" that are worth much more than the name of their space leads you to believe (Slide, RockYou, etc).

Dipity caught my attention only because they came up with a very cool use of the YouTube API. However, they also came up with a very interactive widget that, if done properly, could be as compelling as Slide's slide show widget. Basically, they allow you to create a timeline of anything and share them with the world. Here is a link to the Apple Timeline. Even cooler, they allow various views on the same timeline and allow multiple people edit the timeline.

Their biggest problem is going to be performance. I'm running Firefox 3 on a pretty beefy Ubuntu box and the rendering stinks. They'll need to figure this out.

Bottom line, a compelling startup can be as simple as a different way to visualize something. It will be interesting to see if they are able to gain traction.
