I love music. And of all music, I like rock and roll most. At the heart of all great rock is the guitar, and the guitar shines today in the top 5 greatest guitar solos. Included in the list are a few songs that had the juice to make honorable mention, but not enough to crack the list.

Honorable Mention:

Hotel California - The Eagles Easy sounds from this southern rock band gave it such a nice feel. I still haven't figured out what the song is about, though I have read things ranging from Satanism to music history (with references to Steely Dan and many other rock greats in the song). But the solo is just killer. Definitely one of the greatest rock solos ever.

Reelin' in the Years- Steely Dan This is the closest to pop of any songs on my list. It actually was the #1 pop tune of 1973. But the guitar solo is totally rock. Steely Dan is jazzy enough for your mom and dad to enjoy, rockin enough for me, and about the most sophisticated rock and roll created. The solo on this track is Jimmy Page's favorite solo of all time. It's not every day you can find a guitarist who can come close to replicating it.

Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin There are many who say Jimmy Page's hammering on Stairway was the best solo of all the Led Zep tunes, but this one had more emphasis with the breaks. I gotta whole lotta love for this song and this solo!

Long Time - Boston Off the self titled album, this was the best of Boston's killer guitar solos in my opinion, and there were plenty to choose from.

Europa - Santana This song was the closest of the honorable mention selections to making the top 5. If you think Black Magic Woman contained his best solo work, you are incorrect. You can feel the heat coming off those tubes in his Mesa Boogie. Wikipedia has the parameters for attaining the sound Santana had on Europa, supposedly. He really makes the guitar sing, scream, and then cry.

Do You Feel Like We Do - Peter Frampton This was the best video I could find of this. The sound quality isn't the best, but it still has the voice box and guitar solo. This tune is energetic, and the solo rocks in a big way that is worthy of mention on my list.

The "Top 5"

#5 Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd The smoothest work by a seriously smooth guitar player. Quite a few regard this as the best guitar solo ever laid to vinyl in the Rock and Roll genre. David Gilmour punctuates a song about an apparent injection of something that takes away pain. According to some of the information I found, there was nothing to the drug rumors other than that it was about a child that got sick and got shot up with some medicine to feel better. Of course, the term "acid rock" is actually a description of the effects of acid rain on a sheer mountain face. YEA RIGHT! Any way you slice it, the solo is one of the best ever.

#4 Eruption - Van Halen Eddie sets the fretboard on fire with some of the fastest hammering ever recorded. Actually, he was so fast many of the notes were supersonic and undetectable to the human ear. That's how amazing this solo was! The link is to a live version with a little more than the original recorded version.

#3 Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits Is it rock and roll? You better believe it! There's no trumpet playing in this song, and the solo(s) are just as effortlessly smooth and fast as the combination can be. One of my gun range instructors used to say "Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast!". I love the clean bends and flat picking Knopfler brings with his guitar here on this slightly altered live extended version.

#2 Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd It's technically not a guitar solo when played live since it's a duel between Allen Collins and Steve Gaines (Ed King originally), but the recorded version was double tracked and recorded by Allen Collins alone (still not exactly a solo). But since the 5 minute guitar piece at the end of the song is one of the most recognizable portions of rock and roll picking in rock's history, I have to include it. The haunting slide played in the beginning of the tune is by Gary Rossington. That makes it a three part solo. :)

#1Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughan This is the ultimate in Rock and Roll guitar solo, an extended version of Hendrix' Little wing with a portion of Third Stone from the Sun at the end. It's a buffet of all you can eat blues/rock! It has some serious rock foundation to it, but the soul of this jam session is pure blues. It's sad that such a talented guy (the greatest guitarist to live) didn't live longer. To quote Bill, how much music was lost when he died? He had years of creativity, writing, recording, and performing taken away when he died in a helicopter crash at the age of 45. When you watch him play, he makes it look so easy.

There you have another controversial edition of Saturday Top 5. If you think I am wrong, then you are wrong, obviously. I welcome anyone to challenge my list so I can prove to them why I am right.

, posti a sedere liberi ZERO!
E' andato tutto a meraviglia.

Maybe to some the rock band Dire Straits may not mean anything. Or their seminal recording from the 70's, "The Sultans of Swing", but this guy is the balm. What Les Paul and Mary Ford were to the electric guitar and fresh, crisp arrangements in the 1950's, Mark Knoffler has been for outstanding guitar work, arrangement and smooth vocals for the best part of three decades. We were privileged to attend a concert near our home last week and it was a blessing to this rocker-in-white because I only appreciated him from a distance when he was in his heyday with Dire Straits from the late 70's to the mid 90's.

We were accompanied by our dear friends Steve and Linda Phillips and our pastor and his wife and Linda's sister and husband. John Barach, our pastor, has been a music appreciation inspiration to us these last two plus years because he enjoys and knows a fair amount about many genre's. I don't think he's a day over 40, but he amazes me when he quotes from some of my favorite do-wop standards from the late 50's. Our liturgy at church has become an integral part of that education. We sing a lot of the Psalms and John and Moriah have taught us the melody and lyrics of a dozens these past two years. It's a rewarding experience for all, not to mention teaching the children scripture in the bargain.

We've still a pretty small congregation, but that's not all bad. How many Christian couples do you know who can attend a concert with two other couples from their church and be able to say half their church was at the Mark Knopfler concert? Okay, so you'd use minuscule! I believe we'll soon grow into a larger group. In the mean time it remains a mystery that our pastor, for all his preaching/teaching capability, among other pluses like our continuing music education, is a well kept secret in southern Oregon. People will start finding out about him one of these days and then maybe half the concert will be the church. In fact, I'll bet the knowledge of the Lord (what we're really learning) is gong to cover the earth one day, as the waters cover the sea. In the meantime, we're asking God to keep expanding our musical horizons.

Well, not exactly. Stan and I went to see Mark Knopfler in concert on Saturday night at the Greek Theatre. C'mon...you know...Mark Knopfler? Of Dire Straits? The one who wrote the score to Princess Bride? Anyway, it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. He is an incredible musician, as are all the guys who played with him.

So the crush...he had a great voice. I could listen to him talk for hours. I don't really have a crush on him...just his voice.

However, the album failed to meet expectations -- it only went platinum in America and it didn't crack the U.K. Top 40 -- and failed to generate a hit single. Similarly, the tour was a disappointment, with many tickets going unsold in both the U.S. and Europe. Singer, songwriter and ace guitarist Mark Knopfler is the impressive sum of several very appealing parts. His voice is a smoky mixture of Bob Dylan's acidic whine, Tom Waits' tubercular snore and JJ Cale's breathy, marbles-in-the-mouth whisper. He writes such songs as "Sultans of Swing" and "Once upon a Time in the West" with the cinematic flair of Bruce Springsteen, the hall-of-mirrors imagery of classic Dylan and the slashing thrusts of Neil Young's bayonetlike realism. Finally, Knopfler's guitar style is a shotgun wedding of jazzy chording and harmonic tangents descended from Django Reinhardt and Wes Montgomery, the no-nonsense electric blues of BB King, Jimi Hendrix' string-bending sensuality and James Burton's country-pop sheen.

Guitar freaks who genuflected over every riff on Dire Straits and Communiqué may be disappointed at what seems like a shortage of raveup Knopfler solos on Making Movies. There are a few (in "Tunnel of Love" and "Solid Rock"), but the beauty of the artist's current playing is that each note and phrase is woven into the fabric of the tales he tells. Unlike the other LPs, this one boasts songs, not solos.

More important, Making Movies is the record on which Mark Knopfler comes out from behind his influences and Dire Straits come out from behind Mark Knopfler. The combination of the star's lyrical script, his intense vocal performances and the band's cutting-edge rock & roll soundtrack is breathtaking–everything the first two albums should have been but weren't. If Making Movies really were a film, it might win a flock of Academy Awards. (RS 336)

Now here I am again in this mean old town,
And you're so far away from me.
Now where are you when the sun goes down,
You're so far away from me.

You're so far away from me,
So far I just can't see.
You're so far away from me,
You're so far away from me.
Alright.

I'm tired of being in love and being all alone,
When you're so far away from me.
I'm tired of making out on the telephone,
Cos you're so far away from me.

You're so far away from me,
So far I just can't see.
You're so far away from me,
You're so far away from me.
Alright.

And I get so tired when I have to explain,
That you're so far away from me.
See you've been in the sun and I've been in the rain,
And you're so far away from me.

You're so far away from me,
So far I just can't see.
You're so far away from me,
You're so far away from me.
Take it down.

So far away.
You're so far away from me.
(You're so far.)
Alright.
(You're so far.)
Yes, you're so far away from me.

Dire straits

The group needs no introduction to music lovers around the world!

A prominently classic-rock oriented band featuring legendary guitarist Mark Knopfler.

What to look out for:

Terrific guitar riffs, good lyrics, great vocals, good arrangement and good sound overall.

Songs I recommend :

For newcomers:

1.Sultans of swing - This is the song that got me hooked to the band...

The track, one of the signature songs of the band and an all time cult classic, is a regular on my i-pod and believe me you, the song jells amazingly well anywhere in the tracklist.

The guitar riffs at the end are one of the best I've heard...

2.Private Investigations - An unbelievable blend of the guitar and piano, with some imaginative lyrics, the song is sure to be number one on your playlist.

The last two minutes of the song are what that take the song to the next level :)

3.Money for nothing - Arguably their most famous composition ever, the build-up to the guitar riff that follows at the start of the song is amazing. The first song to be played on MTV live in Britain.

Other great songs you shouldn't miss:

1.Brothers in arms ( great song about war, accompanied by a bleeding guitar )

2.Six blade knife ( fun song for the road, fantastic vocals n guitar )

3.Romeo and juliet ( The title is self explanatory i guess ;) , the arrangement of the song is what impresses me most and of course the lyrics, another very famous song )

4.Tunnel of love ( a long song this, but well worth it, considering the mind-blowing guitar playing in the end ) :)

5.Millionaire blues ( a highly underrated song, full of attitude and sheer fun to listen to! And outstanding vocals as always ;) )

6.So far away ( Nothing special, very easy on the ear, a good listen )

7.Your latest trick( The sax does the trick, a low-volume song ideal for a romantic evening in the restaurant)

8.Walk of life ( Another one for the masses, a very peppy commercial number, chartbuster)

9.On every street (The title song of the album, the guitar at the end again is the highlight, besides great vocals)

10.Heavy fuel ( Another great attitude song! You'll love it if you're a fan of classic rock...)

11.Portobello belle (I just love the way he sings "portobello belle" again n again!!) :)

12.Lady writer ( Again, catchy lyrics and fantastic guitar playing at the end )

Mark knopfler himsef was part of a few solo efforts and some of the songs are damn good!

Be sure to try these out :

1.What it is ( Mark at his best, I would say! )

2.Why aye man

3.Wanderlust

4.Rudiger

For more information on the group:

Me and my handsome Daddy.

Tomorrow is Father's Day, and to celebrate, I'm posting about my Daddy.

I have the best parents ever; not only have they been together over 30 years - "without either of us killing each other," as my mother likes to say - but they seem to get ever more fun the longer I know them.

Case in point - yesterday, my Daddy comes bringing me one of those old-fashioned looking little stereos that plays records, CDs, and tapes. "Now, this will play any kind of record," he told me, "78s even. Do you even have any 78s?" I think if I'd said no, he would have gone looking for those, too. How wonderful is that?

I don't even know all the ways to tell you how great my Daddy is. But here's a list of just some of the reasons he's the best:

When I was little, he used to take me to his coal mines with him, and actually let me go just inside. I rode in the coal trucks, on the dozers and the loaders, even on the man trip. That's an experience very few children have, I imagine. Plus he would always hide me a little snack in his "dinner bucket," then bring it back to me at night.

My Daddy loves old cars. We're always looking at cars, working on cars, or talking about cars. By the time I was five, I could rattle off the specs on his '73 Corvette (it's an LT1 with a 327, if you're interested), and tell you all the trim levels and available engines for Chevrolet trucks. He taught me all this. I was like a trained monkey - he'd take me to the service station, or the liquor store, and sit me up on a counter and let me run on as long as anybody would listen. Even now, he loves it when I can come with some car talk in front of his buddies.

We would often go to Tennessee to see friends of his, and Daddy would always stop at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate so I could see the Lincoln Museum. Once we went past when it was closed, and we still yet stopped to look at the huge statue of Lincoln and his dog. Just because I wanted to. I always loved history, and he'd go out of his way to show me something historically interesting, and would bring me books and things about history.

Sometimes Daddy would come get me and even friends of mine out of school just to take us to lunch, or to take us on some trip he was going on for work. He even did this after I was in college, and all my friends just loved it. In fact, he still does this.

Okay, I'm about to get all teary-eyed, so here's the songs, dedicated to my Daddy:

Kenny Rogers - Reuben James

There used to be a restaurant (or "resturnt," as we say around here) in town that Daddy and I would go to when I was really little. They had a big jukebox, and when we went in, Daddy would give me a handful of change so I could play it. I was so little that they had to push a chair up in front of it so that I could see the list and reach the buttons. This was one of the songs I liked best, and would sing it for Daddy and whomever else had the misfortune to be there at the time. Daddy was always tickled by how amazed people were that such a little girl could sing all the words to so many songs. He's still tickled when he thinks I've impressed anyone :)

My mother and Daddy both love Kenny Rogers. In fact, they took me to a Kenny Rogers concert when I wasn't even two years old - and they claim I loved it. Hmmm.

Jefferson Starship - Count on Me

We also listened to a lot of soft rock, when I was little. This is one of the songs I can remember hearing on the radio, maybe when we'd drive up to Marblehead, Ohio, to see some of Daddy's friends and so he could pretend to fish (he doesn't like to fish - he just likes boats), or when we'd go to Gatlinburg, Tennessee to go to the rod runs and the weird museums down there. My family has always been one to travel, but we're not big on amusement parks or anything like that - we instead like historical sites and museums and places where old cars congregate. We still all go on trips together, even though all the children are grown now. And we still have so much fun.

We can count on each other, too.

Dire Straits - Portobello Belle (live)

Most kids, once they are teenagers, kind of grow apart from their parents. I never got the opportunity - my parents wouldn't allow it. We were all still herded together all the time, whether we liked it or not.

When it came time for me to get my drivers' license, and hence a car, Daddy and I spent a lot of time driving around, looking for a car for me. We'd talk about cars, about the cars he'd had (and he's had a lot), and what would be good for me. We listened to Dire Straits a lot; they're the kind of low-key stuff he loves. When this song would come on, and he'd hear the line, "she thinks she's tough/she ain't no English rose," Daddy would always nudge me and say "sounds like somebody I know." And I thought I was tough, but we both knew better.

On a funny note, some people who lived a few miles up the road from me had an awesome 79 model Camaro Z28. It has sat there for over 20 years, just collecting dust. I wanted that car so bad I could taste it when I got my license, so Daddy went up to these people's door, and asked them if they would sell it. They of course said no. Instead of giving up graciously, he offered them way more than it was worth, which they still refused. He then told them that if it were him, he'd be ashamed to let that car sit there and rot when a little old girl wanted it so bad. To this day I laugh about that, because he had several classic cars of his own that I was forbidden to touch under any circumstances!

Waylon Jennings - Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line

Everyone I know thinks I have the coolest Daddy ever. So here's one more for the coolest Daddy ever.

Oh, and here's a picture of my baby, the classic truck I was finally able to buy my own self. My Daddy was probably never prouder of me than when I had him go look at this one with me. And that includes when I graduated from high school, college, and graduate school. So here it is, the truck me and my Daddy spend so much time on, my precious Lil' Doe:

Baby I see this world has made you sad
Some people can be bad
The things they do, the things they say
But baby I'll wipe away those bitter tears
I'll chase away those restless fears
That turn your blue skies into grey

Why worry, there should be laughter after pain
There should be sunshine after rain
These things have always been the same
So why worry now

Baby when I get down I turn to you
And you make sense of what I do
I know it isn't hard to say
But baby just when this world seems mean and cold
Our love comes shining red and gold
And the rest is by the way

Why worry, there should be laughter after pain
There should be sunshine after rain
These things have always been the same
So why worry now

wALL sTRAITS (Dire Straits tribute)

ed i

Blue Vanilla (Hard Rock '70-'80)

jooooder.... 10 minutos seguidos de directo crudo. Cómo mola tocar en banda de 4... :-)
