Isn't it weird when a song (or a book or a movie) hits too close to home? I mean, I've had my fair share of movie moments (Josie Gellar while pining for the uber-hot teacher, Disturbia last September, etc.) and today's forgettable workday definetly added to one of those media-moments. I'm just going to describe my life lately through song.

Let me start off by saying that I'm far too lame to make this connection until I actually heard the song blasting through the loudspeakers while in layaway. The connection snapped while I was pricing kids backpacks....yeah.

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain

Not quite. Usually my life is anything BUT plain.

I like watching the puddles gather rain

...What? It's relaxing...

And all I can do is just boil some tea for two

I have been drinking more tea lately. To be fair, it could possibly be my recent obsession to the English lifestyle.

And speak my point of view

I do NOT talk to myself. Rather, I just write out my theories in a notebook and copy them onto my own blog

But it's not sane

Plenty of people blog...they can't ALL be insane!

I just want someone to say to me
"I'll always be there when you wake"

*sigh* Guilty. I can't defend myself much with that one.

You know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today

Thankfully, I haven't cried for about 4 weeks. But that doesn't mean that I don't fight it back everyday.

So stay with me and I'll have it made

:-) Please?

And I don't understand why I sleep all day

I sleep in as much as possible on my days off (not often).

And I start to complain that there's no rain

Hadn't I been staring out the front of the store at the sunny day upset that it was, in fact, not raining? How odd.

And all I can do is read a book to stay awake

My nose is always in a book. I can't be ripped away from Twilight, unless Edward Cullen appeared next to me.

And it rips my life away, but it's a great escape

Whilst in the breakroom last Wednesday (reading, of course) Neil asked why I was always reading. I had answered "It takes me away from reality. I escape."

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
You don't like my point of view

There's always some hater who calls me emo or a drama queen.

You think that I'm insane

Whatevs.

It's not sane, it's not sane

There's room for argument on the definition of "sane."

I happened to stumble across a few CNN videos last night where financial analysts were explaining to the general public in layman’s terms. It got me riled up enough to talk to Jack about the whole “imminent recession / apocalyptic depression” that has even gotten many of the Haas professors’ attentions. Now that maybe because their retirement funds are all tied to the Dow, but lets be serious - the financial crisis looks pretty damn grim. Its funny because Jack and I usually have the same type of mindset and this situation proved no different. The recession will likely kick into full gear within a couple years and have lasting effects for most of Obama or McCain’s term. Thats perfect for us. Graduating in the next couple years Jack described it to me as the story of Noah’s Ark - the flood is rising and the slate wiped clean. Its like Wall Street is hitting the reset button and we’re gonna have a clean chess board to play on in a few years. Wall Street is turning into the wild west.

Grow some balls America because we're hitting the reset button and I take no prisoners.

I’m pretty damn excited about the recession. Can you tell?

I just started listening to Rihanna - Disturbia today. My close friends all know that I love finding "good" songs while they're still "underground" but... Disturbia has been out for so long. Smooth played it today while I was in Trakmatik's program (I volunteer in a music production / business program in East Oakland) so that the kids could analyze the music's structure ... (Intro, Verse, Hook, Verse, Hook, Bridge, Hook) and now its totally growing on me. The song went from overplayed radio trash and background club beats to my itunes. Are my ears going out of tune?

September 28, 2008

Disturbia (2007) Directed by D.J. Caruso (3/5)

Shia LeBeouf plays Kale a young man who has been put on house arrest after assaulting his teacher in this psychological thriller. With little to do in his spare time, Kale begins spying on his neighbors and begins to suspect one of them is a serial killer. With the help of his friends he begins to investigate further, but soon Kale and his friends are in over their heads and Kale’s mom played by Carrie-Anne Moss just might be his neighbor’s next victim. Though the film was predictable and from what I understand a rip-off of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window (which I have yet to see) it was entertaining and it actually made me jump a couple of times.

October 3, 2008

Scanners (1981) Directed by David Cronenberg (3/5)

This film had an interesting premise, but the effects don’t hold up very well. In Scanners, a small percentage of the world’s population are scanners or telepaths who can read your thoughts and in the case of the more powerful ones control them. The powerful scanner Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside) is on a mission to start an army of scanners and rule the country if not the world by controlling the thoughts of others. However, there are scanners that disagree with his views who wish to stop him. Among them is Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack) who also has strong scanning powers and who with the help of Kim (Jennifer O’Neill) uncovers the mystery behind how scanners came to be. A great sci-fi film, which unfortunately is a bit dated, but still interesting nonetheless.

October 4, 2008

Re-Animator (1985) Directed by Stuart Gordon, Based on the story by H.P. Lovecraft (5/5)

I absolutely loved this movie! Like Evil Dead, it is campy horror at its best. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) and Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) are medical students intent on finding the secret to immortality, despite Dan’s fiancée Megan’s misgivings. Though they are successful in re-animating several subjects the results are usually disastrous and lead to the death of Megan’s father, who also happens to be the dean of the medical school. Of course, the two re-animate him which leads one of their professors, Dr. Carl Hill (David Gale), who has a strange fixation on Megan, to discover what they’re up to. Hill hatches a plot to steal the re-animation fluid, thus gaining all the glory, but his attempts are thwarted by West and soon all hell breaks loose.

October 5, 2008

Martin (1977) Written and directed by George A. Romero (3/5)

A strange and interesting film, Martin is the story of a bizarre young man named Martin who believes he is a vampire. However, he is not alone in this belief, his cousin Tada Cuda who he has recently moved in with also believes he is “nosferatu” and swears to save Martin’s soul before killing him. But if Martin feeds on anyone in town Tada Cuda makes it clear that he will kill Martin whether his soul has been saved or not. This film is interesting because it leaves room for doubt - is Martin really a vampire or is he crazy and is old Tada Cuda simply a superstitious old man? This is what his granddaughter Christina and the parish priest seem to think. This film is a bit dated and its nothing compared to Romero’s Dead movies, but I enjoyed it.

October 6, 2008

Wait until Dark (1967) Directed by Terence Young, based on the play by Frederick Knott (4/5)

Audrey Hepburn plays a blind woman tricked and tormented by criminals searching for a doll filled with drugs in this psychological thriller, which takes place in one room. The film also features stellar performances by Alan Arkin and Richard Crenna.

October 7, 2008

The Prophecy (1995) Written and directed by Gregory Widen (2/5)

This film was not what I expected at all. I thought it would be more like The Exorcist (1973) or The Seventh Sign (1988), but instead it was more like a supernatural, religious episode of Law & Order. More drama than horror, The Prophecy stars Christopher Walken as the angel Gabriel, Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen and Eric Stoltz as the angel Simon. Koteas plays a police officer who once intended to be a priest, but was unable to accept the rite due to his loss of faith. He is called in on the investigation of a strange murder involving an extraordinary victim. Soon he finds himself entangled in a war between angels over a dark soul trapped in a child’s body, which it has been prophesized will cast humans from heaven giving God’s grace back to the angels. As always, Walken was amazing and though the rest of the cast was good, this film left something to be desired.

I've just watched Eagle Eye. I have to tell you that it is most definitely worth it even if you're paying the most expensive movie ticket. Shia LaBeouf is all grown up now.

He was barely 21 when this guy made the jackpot in Hollywood. Now 4 consecutive successes in Hollywood. Disturbia, Transformers, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and now, Eagle Eye. But one still have to kept in mind that before he was the leading man, he was more of a side kick or he had smaller roles in other films.

Remember that butt-naked fella in Bobby or that wanna-be hero sidekick in Constantine. Even there was I, Robot and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle? And before that, there was that Disney Channel Movie, Holes and he was even in Dumb and Dumberer. Now, doesn't that young boy ring a bell in your head? Mind you, there were plenty more of films that he did and they were good.

But whenever I watch him in these movies, I could never forget the image of Louis Steven out of my head. No matter what kind of movie it was or whatever character he was portraying, there was still humour that I recognised and I could still picture Louis.

I bet this was the role that he got noticed for before he carried on to bigger with movies but with smaller roles. It took a lot of hard work with baby steps before he got to where he is today.

Anyway, even before 13-year-old Shia did the Even Steven Show on Disney Channel, I thought that I showed you guys something interesting while I was re-watching one of my favourite shows, Freaks and Geeks.

Part 1:

Part 2:

So young and he would never know what was coming for him.

Ok the concerts just keeps coming. Was flipping through the Life! section of The Straits Times when I sort of saw this piece of news that Rihanna would be holding a concert in Singapore in November! This is quite long due I think, since her Good Girl Gone Bad Tour ended on 5 April this year. Wonder what songs she will do for this performance, since she has re-released her album, and that Disturbia and Take A Bow have done so well on the charts?

Post from Sept. 24–yes, I know it’s Oct. now–but I wrote it and gosh darn it, it

Post from Sept. 24--yes, I know it's Oct. now--but I wrote it and gosh darn it, it's goin' up! Most everything has changed: I'm no longer sick, though I do still suck at both jobs, it seems. And that playlist pretty much just annoys the hell out of me at this point. But maybe you're as lame as I and still actually haven't heard of a few of these folk. xoxo!

"Production”—those three to four weeks of hellacious crunch time in which we put together a magazine—supposedly ended last, last Friday, but disaster struck in two of my stories that I supposedly fact-checked (though apparently failed to do so thoroughly enough). And being thorough-anal is kinda my sole talent.

Lately I’ve felt like I’m terrible at both of my jobs, and since all I do is work, that sort of implies that I suck at life in general. I even found a Ben & Jerry’s flavor I do not care for (Fossil Fuel—I’m pretty sure that’s Hershey’s in there.)

Tonight I made a bunch of carrots for dinner but finally admitted – I fucking hate carrots. There’s a big pot of ‘em here if you’re into that sort of thing.

While dying of overwork/migraines/sinus infections for the last two weeks, I had a lot of thoughts.

But then I didn’t write them down.

Guess those are gone.

One thing I’m constantly reminded of is that sometimes I feel like saying to people that if they don’t watch Mad Men, they can’t understand what I’m feeling. This happens on Monday mornings in particular, which is why I love this someecard. There is nothing so fun as absorbing oneself in a show that’s completely outside of one’s realm. Perhaps this is why I love Mad Men, hate The Biggest Loser, and have mixed feelings about Desperate Housewives (if you have to pick, at least go all the way and be Bree.)

I like things that are ironic. According to some/many/most/anyone who knows better, I use that word incorrectly. What I mean to say is things that are “just plain wrong!” Things that are funny because they’re such oxymorons. (You’re an oxymoron.)

Like that David Hasselhoff judges America’s Got Talent, or that Jerry Springer is the host. That Avril Lavine’s tour is called, “The Best Damn Tour Ever,” and to prove it you can see her live video from Toronto. That they save Lipstick Jungle and dropped Cashmere Mafia, a show that was actually enjoyable to watch.

The problem with blogging for me is that I have to fact check every damn little thing. It’s just ingrained in me these days. Like how to spell, “Hasselhoff.” It takes 20 extra minutes to write each damn sentence.

So let’s stick to the basics. If you want to know what I’m listening to, you really only need turn on the radio. As Trish would spit out in disgust, I have rather ridiculously mainstream taste in music. She’d cringe knowing I go to—gasp!—the homepage of the iTunes store to see what I’m missing out on.

That’s right, right now on my playlist:

1. Kanye’s Love Lockdown – #1 on iTunes! Can you listen to this and not turn everything into a drum set? (p.s. I’m the best air drummer ever. Don’t know if you knew that.)
2. Plushgun’s Impolite: love, love, love, makes me happy.
3. I like these Blitzen Trapper folk.
4. Still not over Mika’s Grace Kelly, not going to lie.
5. MGMT’s Kids (frankly, anything by MGMT…)
6. I’m into the Audi commercial song, known as “Notes on Progress,” and available from their website
7. Disturbia – I have no idea what the fuck this song is talking about. Then again, am I supposed to? It’s like someone asked Rihanna to write a song for the soundtrack of a scary movie, and, well, she got all confuzled and kina took it literally?
8. Nope, not tired of Vampire Weekend, A-Punk yet.
9. The Story, Brandi Carlile http://www.myspace.com/brandicarlileband
10. Sigur Ros, Saeglopur (And their ultimate video: I can’t watch it myself because I cry every time, but you can enjoy it!)
11. Motion City Soundtrack, Fell In Love With You (kinda on my list—it usually makes me feel all Dawson’s Creek-y, which I’m not a fan of.)

Peter Webber (Hannibal Rising) will direct The Spider's House, a romantic drama following two ex-lovers who meet again in 1950s Morocco, on a backdrop of growing tensions between freedom fighters and French colonials. It is adapted by newcomer Laurie Cooke from a novel by Paul Bowles (The Sheltering Sky).

The 1987 classic supernatural thriller Angel Heart is getting the remake treatment. The original film was written and directed by Alan Parker (The Life Of David Gale), based on a book by William Hjortsberg (Legend), and stars Mickey Rourke (Stormbreaker), Robert De Niro (Righteous Kill) and Charlotte Rampling (The Duchess) among others. Watch the original's trailer below.

Jack Black (Tropic Thunder) will star in an untitled spoof of the Bourne films, from the screenwriters of Kung Fu Panda, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. Black will play an amnesiac who's convinced he must be a spy...FYI, this movie was already made last year into the very unfunny Code Name: The Cleaner.

Philip Seymour Hoffman (Charlie Wilson's War) will voice Max in Mary And Max, a claymation film about two penpals, an 8 year old Australian girl and a 44 year old Jewish New Yorker dude. In the meantime you'll be able to catch him in the incredible looking films Synecdoche, New York (see the trailer) and Doubt (see the trailer).

British actor Michael Sheen (Blood Diamond) just signed onto two films: the new Alice In Wonderland movie from director Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street) and the terrorism-themed thriller Unthinkable from Australian director Gregor Jordan (Ned Kelly), also starring Samuel L. Jackson (Lakeview Terrace) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Disturbia).

Director Martin Scorsese (The Departed) is set to reunite with regular star Robert De Niro more than 13 years after the mob flick Casino. The new film will be based on the non-fiction book I Heard You Paint Houses from author Charles Brandt, as adapted by multi-award winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian (American Gangster).

Passengers is a supernatural thriller directed by Rodrigo García (Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her) and written by Ronnie Christensen (10.5). It stars Anne Hathaway (Get Smart), Patrick Wilson (Lakeview Terrace), Clea DuVall (The Grudge), David Morse (Disturbia), Dianne Wiest (Dan In Real Life) and Andre Braugher (The Andromeda Strain) among others.

It tells the story of Claire, a young therapist who's assigned to a group of plane crash survivors, when weird stuff starts happening. I think it looks pretty cool, but the supernatural thriller genre has provided many disappointments, especially when the time comes to explain stuff. The film will come out in the US on October 24th but people in Greece and Spain can already go see it. If any of you already have, please share your thoughts in the comments.

So Fall is here. Finally. With Fall comes big movies. At the beginning of the year, I posted some of the movies I had been looking forward to seeing most this year. I've already reviewed a lot from the list, Cloverfield, Burn After Reading, The Dark Knight, The Happening, and Pineapple Express. And now, we can check one more off the list.. Eagle Eye.

Jerry Shaw (Shia LaBeouf) is a down on his luck guy in his twenties. After hearing about the death of his twin brother, Ethan, Jerry returns home where he's unwelcome. Refusing to accept money from his disappointed father, Jerry goes back to his life. However, his luck appears to be changing when he checks the ATM and finds his balance has risen to over $700,000. This brief moment of happiness is quickly turned to shock and confusion when Jerry goes to his apartment and finds it filled with barrels of chemicals, ammonia, grenades, assault rifles, etc. Opening a case, he finds a ringing cellphone and is told he has been "activated" and is advised to flee. Not understanding what the fuck is going on, he refuses and is ambushed by the FBI. Jump to: Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan). Rachel is a single mother who has just sent her 9 year-old son off to Washington on a band trip when she receives a call similar to Jerry's informing her that she too has been activated. Refusing at first, she follows the instructions provided to her over the phone when the life of her son is threatened. After being interrogated by Agent Thomas Morgan (Billy Bob Thorton), Jerry is allowed his one phone call. The call is interrupted by the mysterious voice who informed him he had been activated. The voice organizes his escape with the help of Rachel (remember her?). The two become wanted fugitives running away from the law, with the help of a mysterious voice, and towards answers. Kind of.

Wow. Longest synopsis ever? Maybe that's because the story of Eagle Eye gets deeper and more convoluted as the story goes on during its 118 minute runtime. It wasn't all bad, just 3/4 of it was. The movie started out very strong just like Disturbia did. However, DJ Caruso didn't seem to be able to handle this much bigger film. While Disturbia was entertaining and gripping throughout, Eagle Eye lost it's steam when the "bad guy" of the movie is revealed. SPOILER! (Highlight the text if you want to know who the voice on the phone is. It's a Hal-9000 from 2001. A "super computer" that the government built and has become so smart, that it's decided that America's leaders need to be killed. The car chase scenes, I think there were three of them, resembled scenes from Bad Boys II but less cool. While Bad Boys' chases were the shit, in Eagle Eye, they seem too over the top and unnecessary. We all love to see a car flip and roll; it's half the reason why so many people watch NASCAR, but come on.

The beginning of the movie is also great due to Shia LaBeouf's performance. Watching his reaction at his brother's funeral, walking up to view an exact image of himself in a coffin, was extremely touching and effective. But while I really like Shia, and have watched him since his days on Even Stevens, his performance alone couldn't save Eagle Eye.

As is apparent in my synopsis, the story of who Jerry Shaw is in Eagle Eye is clearly developed, but just who the hell Rachel Holloman is isn't. Like I said above, she's a single mom and that's it. Michelle Monaghan's performance is okay, but really anyone could have played her part. I'm actually surprised they didn't cast Megan Fox since guys seem to think shes hot as balls and she already has on screen chemistry with Shia. I could go on talking about more shit about all the things I found wrong with Eagle Eye, but I'm confident that if I do, I'll just come off as a douche. So I'll stop here.

Again, I really like Shia LaBeouf. I really enjoyed he and DJ Caruso as a team on Disturbia. I even look forward to them working together again on the upcoming Y The Last Man. But I hope that they learn from the mistakes that were made on Eagle Eye.

5 out of 10.

Shia LaBeouf and director D.J. Caruso reworked Hitchock's “Rear Window” for the teen set with adequate results in last year's “Disturbia.” With “Eagle Eye,” the two return in an attempt streamline Francis Ford Coppola's “The Conversation” for the text message set.

Call it “The CNVRS8SHN.”

On second thought, don't call it at all. “Eagle Eye,” a project long-shelved by LaBeouf's number-one cheerleader Steven Spielberg, has a kernel of an interesting idea rattling around in its hollow head, but it defaults back to the clamor and clatter of the worst of summer blockbusters.

With visuals that suggest the film was edited in a Jeep traveling at top speed on a cobblestone street, the film does not so much transition but spasms from one scene to the next.

The only reason I sat through the various chases is that I honestly did not know who was in what vehicle and was merely interested in who crawled out of the wreckages. That is very different from 'caring' who did.

LeBeouf (don't ask me to pronounce his name, as I have trouble just spelling it correctly) stars as Jerry Shaw, a copy-center jockey who's called home following the funeral of his twin brother killed while on duty in the military. If movies have taught us anything, it's that having a twin rarely has pleasant, uncomplicated outcomes.

After the funeral, Jerry returns to his hovel to find it redecorated with the Martha Stewart Terrorist Collection, featuring the latest in weapons, explosives and fertilizer. The discovery is quickly followed by a phone call telling him he's been “activated” and has mere seconds to elude an FBT arrest.

He's led on what can only be described as a live-action RPG (role-playing game, for all you geezers out there), in which a faceless female voice directs his every move, while assisting him by manipulating everything from traffic lights to Circuit City Home Theater departments to aid his escape.

He accompanied by a yummy Mommy Rachel (played by Michelle Monaghan), who is equally befuddled as to her involvement in all this.

What “Eagle Eye” attempts is to create panic in a world in which our most prized possession – technology – is both our greatest friend and worst enemy. It delivers him the necessary information to elude the “bad guys,” but it also has compiled every instant message, spending habit, website visit and intersection crossing made in the course of our life.

But disembodied voices that inhabit closed-circuit McDonald's televisions and automated parking garage fee signs do not evoke immediate fear from audiences (though Hamburgler can be one scary dude), so we have been given two flesh-and-blood antagonists to occasionally point their guns at our reluctant heroes. Rosario Dawson and Billy Bob Thorton as two Feds in hot pursuit, with Thorton taking on the role of the befuddled, beleaguered agent a la Tommy Lee Jones in “The Fugitive.”

LeBeouf, meanwhile, does his LeBest, which is to say that he injects his usual fast-talking, everyguy style in the face of overwhelming (and downright improbable) odds. It's the same card he's pulled in his other big-budget starring roles in “Transformers” and this summer's “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” He's not without his charms, but it's hard to notice talent amidst a cacophony of crashing metal and special effects. Monaghan, meanwhile, is reduced to nail-biting and fretting, which is really all she has time for when the camera remains steady for a nanosecond.

The Big Brother paranoia is one rife with thriller possibilities, but “Eagle Eye” opts not to exploit it for all its personal intrusions, but rather replaces it with and Red-Bull-fueled action sequences that numb the senses. It leads to a hacker's fever dream conclusion that is staggeringly idiotic in both explanation and execution.

This year marked the 25th anniversary of the release of the kid-friendly paranoid technological thriller “War Games,” which, aside from its computer graphics, still manages to evoke some nerve-fraying fun. My guess is, in 2033, when “Eagle Eye” reaches the same age, it will hardly register a blip on the radar.

As expected, Eagle Eye, the new thriller from Disturbia director D.J. Caruso took the top spot at the US box-office this weekend, making more than 29 million bucks. The romantic comedy Nights In Rodanthe came in second while last week's big winner Lakeview Terrace dropped to third place. Finishing up the top 5 are the Christian-themed drama Fireproof, which did incredibly well consider its theater count, and Burn After Reading, which is holding quite well. Interestingly, Miracle At St. Anna, the World War II film from Inside Man director Spike Lee flopped big time, entering at number 9 with only three and a half million.

What's wrong with me?
Why do I feel like this?
I'm going crazy now

No more gas in the rig
Can't even get it started
Nothing heard, nothing said
Can't even speak about it
I'm a light on my head
Don't want to think about it
Feels like I'm going insane
Yeah

It's a thief in the night
To come and grab you
It can creep up inside you
And consume you
A disease of the mind
It can control you
It's too close for comfort

Put on your green lights
We're in the city of wonder
Ain't gonna play nice
Watch out, you might just go under
Better think twice
Your train of thought will be altered
So if you must faulter be wise
Your mind is in disturbia
It's like the darkness is the light
Disturbia
Am I scaring you tonight
Your mind is in disturbia
Ain't used to what you like
Disturbia
Disturbia

Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum

Faded pictures on the wall
It's like they talkin' to me
Disconnectin' phone calls
The phone don't even ring
I gotta get out
Or figure this shit out
It's too close for comfort

It's a thief in the night
To come and grab you
It can creep up inside you
And consume you
A disease of the mind
It can control you
I feel like a monster

Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum
Bum bum be-dum bum bum be-dum bum

Release me from this curse
I'm trying to remain tame
But I'm struggling
You can't go, go, go
I think I'm going to oh, oh, oh

Put on your green lights
