One of the first talk radio stations in India, Chennai Live 104.8 FM was launched yesterday with 'The Raghu Dixit Project' returning to the music scene after our (much needed?) break and it was an eventful show if nothing else!

We finished our sound check and much to our surprise, everyone in the band not just remembered the songs but also was quite tight with all of them! That made things much easier for us and calmed our nerves a bit which resulted in Nithin doing a "photoshoot" for the band :P .. See the results yourself to believe it! All credit for the photography and direction go ONLY to Nitin Joshi and Siva Prakash who seem to be finding an alternate career option opening up for them!

The show itself was quite an adventure with Siva tearing the snare drum skin on his very first hit!! Now none of the others realized this happened and we thought it was just that the mic was off and we were expecting it to come back on any moment and carried on with the song all the time looking back to see Siva's helpless face and looking with anger at Nitin who could do absolutely nothing about it either!! Siva managed quite well with only rim shots and the toms as we suddenly had to improvise into a very different version of "I still love you!"

There was a quick break when someone was sent to see if he could get a replacement snare and we carried on with the rest of the band adjusting along and Siva displaying the full range of his creativity as we tried to vary songs to not miss the snare drum that much but if you have heard any form of music, you will realize how important the snare is when keeping a beat and not having it was quite a challenge!

The rest of the show passed without any significant incident and we managed to get a few legs shaking in that very formal event and even managed to sell quite a few copies of the album! The snare skin was finally replaced in time for the last 2 songs of the show and from there we ripped the show ;)

Its been a good return and managing to do this after no practice for 2 months is a good sign for us :) .. there is quite a hectic show schedule lined up over the next couple of months, so expect a lot of activity here!

And also .. if any of you was at the show ... drop in and tell us what you thought!

And of course .. I have to leave you with the customary photo of Raghu singing his lungs out with his eyes wide shut!

Its been a long long silence and a very tough one to maintain if you know the kind of people that we are (who usually love making a big noise :P) but we are finally getting back on track after Raghu's accident.

Expect a lot of things to move at break-neck speed (no pun intended ;)!! ).. Okay okay! I will stop with these sidey puns.

This is to inform you chaps that the band is finally getting together after its long hiatus and we will be playing tomorrow in Chennai a the Taj Coromondel for a private event. If you guys are in Chennai and want to come by and say Hi! Get in touch!!

In the meanwhile, a couple of interesting videos have made their way to YouTube and if you guys haven't checked them yet, make sure you do NOW!!

The one shown here is a video of us playing in Itanagar - a day after the accident! This was a fully brilliant show!

There are a few more videos that require a lot of explaining which Raghu himself has promised to do! so watch this space :)

I had refrained from posting anything about the accident and was shocked to see a variety of version

I had refrained from posting anything about the accident and was shocked to see a variety of versions of what happened floating around and I thought it was time to clarify .. So pardon me for the late update ..

It was all going well and fine and we were rocking the shows at the Roots Music festival when on that fateful morning, the car carrying Raghu, Keith and Anung crashed off the road near a village called Gohpur on the way from Diphu to Itanagar.

All three of them were rushed to the nearest hospital which was of not much use anyway and then transferred to actual medical care in Itanagar's RK Mission Hospital.

Raghu dislocated his left shoulder and sustained a chip fracture on his left shoulder also and was treated the same day. He is completely out of danger and is on the way to a full recovery. He has been advised a lot of rest and is back in Bangalore to just chill for a while :)

Infact, we played the show in Itanagar with Raghu coming on stage with a crepe bandage tied all over his upper body and left hand in a sling and singing and dancing and jumping around like he always does to one of the best audiences we have ever seen! over 6000 people jumping along with us made it a moment that brought a slight tear to my eye :) .. Pics of that event will be up soon .. it is something we hope to do again very very soon once Raghu recovers fully.

Keith managed to escape without a lot of injuries and was just shaken up from the accident and sustained a few bodily bruises which have completely healed.

Anung sustained the most injuries from the accident and is being treated in Delhi. I will update you about her status soon. She is completely out of danger and the doctors are still holding off from any surgery because she is recovering amazingly herself.

Thanks all of you for showing your love and appreciation and concern and I am happy to let you know that all is well on the south side of the Vindhyas!

There is a LOT more stuff happening behind the scenes which will be unleashed very soon .. so don't you even think of going anywhere!

87.

The Dame;

Madhuri Dixit.

The Indian film industry is the largest in the world, it has the highest annual output of motion pictures of an industry around the globe (1200 in 2002, 877 in 2003) and the highest numbers in annual ticket sales. As such, its stars, many of whom turn out numerous productions every year, are iconic in status. Their popularity is so great, that many of the major names not only appear on film, they also perform songs from their films in concert. Madhuri Dixit is no different, acting on screen since 1984, a trained and highly accomplished dancer who first dreamed of being a micro-biologist before finding her calling. Though widely recognized for those abilities as a dancer and indeed as a singer, Dixit has a subtlety and control as an actress not widely found in Indian cinema, her heartbreakingly painful (and deservedly award winning) supporting turn in the 2002 production of Devdas, completely stole the show from the films two megastar leads. Following this success she retreated from the silver screen, finding her way to Denver, Colorado where she quietly enjoyed married life and the raising of her family. She did not return to the screen for 5 years till 2007's Aaja Nachle, a film that while generally not well recieved, garnered much acclaim for its leading lady, and the proclomation of the New York Times that "she's still got it".

The Dude;

Bill Murray.

Among the dryest of the dry, Bill Murray somehow managed to establish himself as one of the funniest performers in American cinema. After graduating from the small screen, where he made his name on Saturday Night Live, Murray quickly established himself as a promising up and coming funny man in films like Caddyshack, Stripes, Tootsie and Ghostbusters. Soon thereafter he attempted to build a reputation as a dramatic lead with a starring role in an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's The Razor's Edge, which he co-wrote, the film was a failure and hurt by its resception Murray walked away from the limelight, leaving movies behind to study Philosophy and History at the Sorbonne in Paris, nothing but a cameo appearance in The Little Shop of Horrors for 4 years, until he returned to doing what does best, comedy, over the next few years turning out Scrooged, Ghostbusters II, What About Bob, and coming to a head with the widely acclaimed Groundhog Day in 1993. Following his reestablishment as a star he retreated largely to supporting roles for the next decade before in 2003 taking the starring role in Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation, earning an Oscar nomination, numerous awards and critical acclaim in a film that while shot through with the comedic touch you cannot help but find in Bill Murray movies, was largely dramatic in tone, helping him to find that dramatic leading status he had sought some 20 year earlier, he followed this with further leading turns in quirky dramadies The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Broken Flowers further establishing himself in his new niche as a leading force in indie cinema.

The Director;

Carol Reed.

Carol Reed was one of six illegitimate children of the stage actor, drama teacher, and the impresario founder of the Royal School of Dramatic Arts, Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. As such, when as a teenager he sought to follow his father into acting, nobody could blame him, yet as time went by, it was as a director that Reed quickly established himself. In 1932 he began working at Ealing Studios, and the transition from stage to screen began, he made his directorial debut 3 years later with the adventure film Midshipman Easy. As the second world war began, Reed contributed to the war effort through doing what he knew best, his 1945 Ango-American documentary, The True Glory covering everything from the Normandy landings to the taking of Berlin, it won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and quickly established Reed was a name worth watching. A few years later he turned the crown jewel of his career, the iconic adaptation of Graham Greene's The Third Man, perfectly pitched between darkness and humour, the magnetic and mysterous presence of Orson Welles looming in the long shadows as around his aura Reed crafts a perfectly shot, gloriously scored and wonderfully written piece of work that still towers over most films made in its era, or ever since. Over the next few decades he continued working steadily, mainly on adaptations, his finest moment coming when in 1952, he became the first British director to be knighted, before in 1968 he struck big, bringing to the screen Lionel Bart's musical adaptation of Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist. Oliver! was a movie musical that while never lacking a lightness in touch, was never afraid to stray into the dark and savage places at it's stories heart, with now famous turns from Jack Wild and Ron Moody, it was really the directors nephew, Oliver Reed, whose monstrous Bill Sikes stole the show. The film brought Reed his first Oscar as Best Director after 3 nominations and established his legacy beyond all doubt.

The Picture;

Last Days (Gus Van Sant, 2005)

With 2002's Gerry, Gus Van Sant abandoned bigger budget studio pictures to return to the lower free form style of directing pioneered by the likes of Bela Tarr, he delved into experimental cinema in a way no major director had ever done before after achieving the sort of mainstream success that he had achieved with films like To Die For and Good Will Hunting. Following Gerry and 2003's Palme D'Or winning Elephant, Van Sant turned in Last Days, the final part of what he has termed his 'Death trilogy' the physical isolation of Gerry, social isolation of Elephant came to a head with the mental isolation of Blake. Loosely based on the final days of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, Last Days chronicles the downfall of a man losing the will to live, that simply through stylistic directorial choices makes the audience feel something similar. As our lead character sees nothing but mundanity all around him, through the sterile, static, hushed way in which Van Sant brings each barren, desolate shot to the screen we are left with some sort of understanding of just what is going through his mind. Last Days is not an easy film to watch, indeed it can be an incredibly harsh viewing experience, but the sheer artistry at its heart cannot be denied. With Elephant, Van Sant was accused of not giving answers or offering any sort of explanations as to the actions of his high school slayers, here he is not posing questions, he simply crafts a dark portrait.

We have had a very interesting week so far .. after the jaunt at the Mirchi Studios, we headed to Calicut where we had the whole day to ourselves at the NIT Calicut guest house. We headed out to the beach which was a LONG LONG way from the guest house and then had some super Kerala food at one of Jithin's recommended joints ... After all, he is the Mallu boy and it was only fair to pay heed to his advice there ..

The show the next day was all over the place but Nitin and Navin worked brilliantly with the students of NIT who were sweet and accomodating and got some sort of order and the show could finally begin ... The show itself was okay .. it wasn't our best show and there were a 'few incidents' in the crowd which marred the first trip we took to Kerala ... But lets focus on the positives ...

Jithin's parents finally got to see their son play live on stage with the band and they were overjoyed! His entire family was there with a few friends and they loved the show! atleast thats what they told us ;)

Inspite of how it went, we garnered quite a few fans and I must thank at this point, Anand and his friends who came and hung out with us after the show .. we are very very touched by your support and love for us!

<strike>Anand - you still owe me the list of names which you haven't sent in!</strike>

Anand did read this post and send me the list of people who are featured in this photo above .. Thanks for that!

And I would like to really personally thank
Anand, Tushar, Naveen, Naidu, Harish, Prasad, Ajith, Deepak and Hussamuddin for a lovely evening!

We are determined to go back there soon and we're sure this time round, things will be a lot better!

But that is past .. and we have moved on ...

We are in Bombay now and are playing for the 'Miss Teen India' contest tomorrow which promises to be a blast! After that we head to Bangalore to play at RVCE on Sunday .. that will be a belter of a show! We haven't played a public show in Bangalore for so long its not funny!! More about that soon!

There are only 2 things a band on the road wants ... A good show and a clean room. There is the money, there is the adulation and everything else that comes with it, but at the core of things, we would be really happy with a great show! sometimes even with a good show ... and a nice place to go sleep at the end of the show!

A few shows happened recently which warmed our hearts and it would just be unfair for me to not mention it!

We went to Vasavi College very very very tired! It was over 10 hours of travel after shows that finished in the wee hours of the morning that we landed in Hyderabad. Raghu's voice was completely sore and he din't even make it for soundcheck eventually.

The minute we landed in the airport, there were a couple of students waiting for us and we even had a choice of cars for us to pick to take to the venue! That itself is quite something for us!

Nitin was at the venue and he had sorted the sound out, Siva worked on the drums and got that excuse of a drumkit to sound tight! Everything just worked like clockwork and it was a total pleasure working there and getting things into place. The tiredness and weariness just went out and things somehow just fell into place!

A large part of this turnaround was the way in which little things were taken care of for us which is really appreciated!

The other show we played recently was in Chennai where we played at the ArtSeek Music Festival which we really were blown away by the variety and the freshness of the music we saw! But that is a whole new topic which I will talk about soon!

For now .. thanks Vasavi College especially Kapil and the other boys who did everything there! You guys rock!
