The machine is washing my laundry. The online booking, as you will remember, does not work, and the the machine did not seem to remember my on-site booking from yesterday. But I remembered. It took ten minutes of cursing and smacking the side of the washing machine, but it finally gave in. And now it is doing my laundry.

Oslo is hot today, over 30 degrees Celsius(30:5=6, 6x9=54, 54+32=86 degrees Fahrenheit, how about that!) It is saturday and high summer, one-night stands will take place in Oslo tonight. But none of them will include me, I have to stay sober enough to drive a car at 5am tomorrow and go to work. Not that I normally get anywhere with Oslo's female population, or that I ever did, but it is a thought. Instead, I will attend a barbecue in my friend's backyard, it's like a big garden inside a block of flats from around WWI. Nice. My friend is a good cook. I will bring some meat. And potato-salad. My other friend also invited me to a barbecue tonight, too bad they both picked the same day. I accepted the first invitation. I don't get invited places that much anymore. Age thing, I guess. And probably a social status thing, too. My social status is rather low, my work includes a lot of manual labour. I'm not going to divulge what I do for a living. That is going to be my little secret.

Age, social status, and I guess I'm not very interesting anymore. Or nice, I really should try to be nice to people. I have lost a lot of friends by saying the wrong things. Like the following: So you're getting divorced? What's the point of getting married, if you're just gonna get divorced?

Why Partitioning is Good

If you don’t know what partitioning is, here’s an excerpt from a Wikipedia article about

If you don't know what partitioning is, here's an excerpt from a Wikipedia article about Disk partitioning:

Disk partitioning is the creation of separate divisions of a hard disk. Once a disk is divided into several partitions, directories and files of different categories may be stored in different partitions. More partitions provide more control but too many become cumbersome. The way space management, access permissions and directory searching are implemented depends upon the type of file system installed on a partition. Careful consideration of the size of the partition is necessary as the ability to change the size depends on the file system installed on the partition.

There are plenty of good reasons to partition your hard disk, based on the article in Wikipedia, but here's some of the benefit I see in it:

** it makes your system if not drastically, at least a little faster

** helps you become organized. You know, organization can be applied anywhere, most especially in our own computers at home. If you're a neat freak, and is more at ease when everything around you - including files on your computer - is organized and neat, then this is another step forward toward that

** separating the location of the OS from the actual files adds up to a speedier system start. Think about it, if only the OS files are in your boot drive, the system can boot faster because there aren't much files to check (provided that your program files are in another partition).

So, if you're a heavy multitasker who likes opening multiple windows because you have to get a lot of things done, incorporating this style on your next reformat can contribute to a more stable and faster system. Not only does it help in that, it can also help take a step forward toward organizing your files. You'll never know, maybe you can clean up your desktop next. :)

Edit: How can you partition your disk drive? You're gonna have to reformat your computer. Why? Because, the disk partitioning takes place when you install Windows. Please remember that the partition for the boot drive (or where your Windows installation is) should be big enough to hold a few log files and such. Give it at least, 10 or 15 percent of the whole disk space. You're free to do whatever you want with the remaining. If I may suggest, you should install programs in the other drive, not in the boot drive. This enables, like I said a couple of times, for the system to reboot faster.

Now, if you're such a neat freak, you can create three or more partitions, depending on if you're planning to install a different OS aside from Window (like, say, Linux), but this is just for hyper geeks who wants to try out open source OS. You can create three partitions - one for WIndows, one for Linux and the rest is for files, OR, you can create four partitions - one for Windows, one for Linux, one for programs and the rest is for files. But that's a little too much of a good thing I guess.

It is common knowledge amoung the drivers of some small bus companies that SPT are not just subsidising concessions for the elderly, but they are also, subsidising the profits of their employers.

I can reveal that drivers are being routinely instructed to hammer the concession button at every bus stop, effectively creating phantom passengers, and the bus company pockets the money, taking the Government and SPT for hundreds of thousands a year.

"Even if only one passenger gets on every hour on some routes, to SPT it looks as though its a busy service while the owners of the bus are just ripping them off!" said one former bus driver.

[caption id="attachment_158" align="alignleft" width="105" caption="The EU legislated on the maximum number of hours bus drivers can be at the wheel"][/caption]

SPT are being taken for hundreds of thousands of pounds by companies who abuse the concession system. Some companies are even given BUSES from SPT to run on certain routes. If it is a tendered route by SPT, SPT pay ALL RUNNING COSTS of the bus- leaving the company to take in maximum profit as well as revenue from concession fares. So not only are SPT providing the bus, they pay for the route as well, whilst bus drivers, are often underpaid and overworked.

"The company I worked for, and I know of others, make bus drivers work without adequate breaks, well over European Law limits set for public transport workers...sometimes over 70 hours a week." say my sources,

A couple of small bus companies are making their drivers work 12- 14 hours shift, 6 days a week. If drivers refuse to work the full six days, for whatever reason, the full weekly hourly rate is reduced by £1.

"They take on a lot of 'casual' drivers who really have no other choice than to do the hours. This includes Polish and other Eastern European workers who get totally ripped off. Other drivers see it but what can they do?"

[caption id="attachment_159" align="alignright" width="140" caption="Desperate bus drivers can resort to extremes to keep up with their hours of work"][/caption]

Passengers can often be putting their lives in the hands of drivers who are, either not fully qualified or not even insured. Drivers can often be under the influence of drugs while ferrying passengers around on the SPT routes,

In most cases these drivers won't be insured- if your casual, your name wont be in the books so your not named on insurance. Some of these drivers are unfit to drive, I know of drivers who were mad on either Charlie, Speed, cannabis even alcohol. The small bus companies can't afford to drug test these drivers. Its a big part of why they are working for the smaller companies, they wouldn't get employment with big companies.

The small bus companies are under pressure because they are in such fierce competition with the bigger passenger companies that they need drivers to pick up as many passengers on the routes as possible.

[caption id="attachment_157" align="alignright" width="225" caption="Glasgow City Centre at peak times can be highly stressful for bus drivers"][/caption]

It is a war, and drivers are on the front line- the stress of meeting a daily amount of money can be huge, the company would be right on your case if you didn't. Some drivers even find themselves in physical fights with other bus drivers who are told to block off bus stops from other companies. If you look in towns at peak time, you'll see queues of buses, from the same company, sitting at one stop. When the front one fills with passengers and leaves, the second one is right there to take its place. Some drivers will even REVERSE to block in rival companies between their buses to stop them moving to another stop. I've been told if there is a rival bus behind you to ignore OAP's if you can see potential PAYING customers at the next stop. Its a joke.

The safety of these buses are also in question. " Some of these buses are heaps of sh**", says my source, " they have so many problems that its a miracle nobody has been killed yet, but no matter how unsafe the bus is, or how hard it is to drive it- if you take that bus off the road you are fired. The mechanics do their best, some of them, but they are working with tired out buses that really need replaced. They are deathtraps. I know I'd never let any of MY family go on them."

SPT are probably unaware that they are not only subsidising phantom passengers, but they are throwing money at companies to drive bus routes on severely substandard buses, on routes that nobody uses with drivers who are either on the brink of exhaustion, or simply unfit to carry passengers.

These past three days have been something out of the ordinary for me. It all started on 22nd July. I

These past three days have been something out of the ordinary for me. It all started on 22nd July. I woke up in the morning and went swimming. I could complete almost one length-wise trip, which I could not do for a long time. The cause for that is my very limited stamina. But I guess everything turned out well and I at last did it. Then after I came home I slept like a log until after 10:30 AM. I woke up and discovered that my parents had left to office. The previous night, my cousins had come to visit. They are from a village in Tamil Nadu if that matters. I spent the whole day teasing them and chatting very furiously with them.

After I was done "Catching up", I went to the park and just sat there in the fresh air for some time. Ahhh... That was very relaxing. Just then it started raining and I had to come home almost wet. The rest of the evening was retty uneventful. As I had done the previous 2 days, I went to Harsha's place to spend the night. It was like the "Grand Finale" to our NIGHT OUT trilogy. :D We had the most wonderful time watching "Road Trip" and "Old School" while sipping on a glass of Pepsi. Did I mention that we added a pinch of salt to it? Try it. It tastes very good. I was introduced to this taste by my very explorative elder brother.

I fell asleep at one point and slept peacefully till the morning. I was too tired to go swimming, so I went home and continued sleeping till 11 AM. I spent the rest of the day doing absolutely nothing and slept for the most part. The next day(i.e.yesterday) I did absolutely nothing constructive from the morning and in the evening me and my cousin went shopping. When we came back, I was quite surprised to learn that we were to go out for dinner. "We" in the sense, our WHOLE family of 15(cousins included). I was the one who was supposed to get there first and book the tables. I had the worst time waiting there for them to arrive. The waiter there seemed to think some pretty wierd things about me sitting there alone in a place meant for 15 people. I could tell he was thinking something wierd of me because he was looking at me with a funny stare. You know, the ones which you give to people who you think are insane.

They turned up after ONE HOUR. The wait was horrible. But after the dirty part of the waiting was over, we got down to some serious munching. I ate my fill and was a little drowsy. I even wondered how I would drive myself home. But as soon as I got onto my bike and jammed the throttle, I felt the adrenaline rush through me as the roads were very empty by the time we left the restaurant. It was 11:00 PM. Wonderful drive. Made it back home in 6 minutes. I covered a distance of 6 Km in that time. That is pretty good considering the quality of our Indian roads. At this point you may wonder why the hell have I given a title that doesn't relate to the post in any way. Well, read on.

Now we get to the most interesting part. After everyone slept, I made a point to set the alarm in my mobile phone to wake up at 6 in the morning so that I won't miss swimming. I then slept quite peacefully until my aunt woke me up in the middle of the night (I think it was 3:00 AM). She told me someone is ringing the calling bell. Our calling bell is one with a built-in melody. It has 7 monophonic(if that is the right word) melodies. But after I woke up, I couldn't find anyone at the door. At this point I got suspicious and took my cricket bat in my hand and thought of opening the door if it rang again. I waited with baited breath for 15 minutes. Nothing happened. I then came to my room to see that the alarm was going off.

At this point I got SERIOUSLY pissed and asked my aunt whether that was the "music" she heard. To my greatest frustraton, exasperation, horror, irritation and what not, she said yes. For a moment I pictured myself holding a cricket bat in one hand and a mobile phone in the other. MAN that was funny. Then I said to myself-"You are an idiot!". Of course, I won't blame her. It was completely my mistake to set the wrong time in the alarm(3 and 6 are pretty close by on the keypad) as I was VERY sleepy. She can't be expected to realise it all at once because she is basically from a village. The worst part of all this was the fact that I myself could not hear the alarm going off. :D :D :D After that incident was over, I managed to get my adrenaline levels to a low and drifted off to an uncomfortable sleep. Talk about "False Alarms". :D Well, I don't know why I even wrote this post. But I wanted to do SOMETHING and this seemed like a good idea. So please bear with me if this post sucks. :D

With fuel prices rising, road tax on the increase and the astronomical cost of living continually em

With fuel prices rising, road tax on the increase and the astronomical cost of living continually emptying the nation's transport funds - why aren't people using public transport more? Convenience, cost and efficiency are just three of the reasons that so many people opt to stay in their cars, when they should be the reasons to jump on the train or bus.

For the most convenient form of transport, most people will say that driving alone in your own car cannot be beaten. However, there will be times when this is not the case and public transport will be more suitable. Living in London means that the tube can often be the best way to get from A to B and in the quickest possible time.

For those living outside of the big cities and even larger towns the case is more often than not that public transport isn't frequent enough and costs too much. Depending entirely on where you live and where you need to go to, it can rarely be argued that public transport is the better option. A forty minute drive to work for me costs twice as much and takes three times as long on the train. So why would I ever consider not driving for this journey?

Convenience is regularly the first thing that commuters will look for when deciding which mode of transport to use. With this in mind, it would seem that there needs to be a major shake-up before people in more rural areas opt to jump on a bus or train rather than drive themselves to work and back.

The cost of petrol (and diesel), road tax and car maintenance continues to rise as the credit crunch is felt across the country. As the nation begins tightening its belts a little further, cost of commuting to work will play an even more important role in choice of transport method.

Driving into London can be expensive, with congestion charges and road tax added to the already hefty fuel costs and car insurance. Commuting to London by train seems to be the sensible option with the tube offering a pretty good service for getting around central London quickly and easily. But this cannot be said for so many other towns around the UK where bus and services are often infrequent and require multiple changes.

So, for those of us that don't work in London and will not consider car insurance as part of the cost of getting from A to B, is the cost of driving really as expensive as we are told? Fuel prices have shot up dramatically in the last year, rising by about 30 per cent all over the country. Even then, I am still saving a substantial amount of money every week by driving to work despite the protestations of the government who keep trying to persuade us to opt for public transport.

I drive alternate weeks with a work colleague and we halve our fuel consumption as well as sneaking forty winks when it's own turn to be the passenger. Car share schemes seem to be popular amongst drivers for these reasons, as they still offer convenience, value and for those green-thinkers among us is a little better for the environment.

If you drive to work then this is a fantastic option for driving down fuel costs, while doing a little bit for the environment. Another choice for drivers is to avoid busy town centre traffic and the problems of parking by jumping on the park-and-ride service that is sometimes provided. By parking just outside of the town centre, you can pay a small fee and park for the whole day with only the small inconvenience of a short bus ride. A fantastic choice if a parking space is both costly and a rare commodity.

As a regular driver I find travelling by train or bus to be both inconvenient and a little too expensive to tempt me to hang up my keys. But with the cost of fuel rising every week I have been tempted to at least consider the possibility of not driving so often, as well as driving with more efficient fuel consumption in mind.

If fuel prices continue to rise as expected, public transport may become a more viable option as cost plays a bigger role than convenience or efficiency. So, if the nation decides to 'go public', will the public transport system be ready for the increase in popularity? Judging by the numbers of standing passengers commuting to London, it would appear to be very doubtful at best.

Well to top of a rather spectacular day, two things happened...

First, hubby and I went for a drive, taking the dogs along with us. Our destination was a local regional park located on a river. One of the dogs love car rides, the other is not so hot on the idea. We are kind of hoping that if car rides end in a walk, that the reluctant car rider might come to actually enjoy the rides. Upon arriving at the river, we leashed up the dogs and headed to the river bank. Neither dog has had much exposure to water, let alone a river, so I had to pick up both and plunk them in. Ha! What a sight. The reluctant car rider actually swam and tried to drink water at the same time. The other one, Mattie, happily enough paddled in the water, and once she extracted herself, proceeded to jump and play at the shore.

We decided to not let the dogs play in the silty mud on the riverbank, so we headed off down the road to give them their walk. The mosquitoes in full attack mode, we did not manage to give them much more than a half hour walk - just long enough for them to dry off a bit. We piled back into the Jeep, at first trying to convince the dogs that they wanted to be in the very back cargo area, but that did not last for more than a few minutes. Chewie decided that she was going to cry and whine and kick up such a commotion that hubby stopped the Jeep so I could go and retrieve her and place her in the back seat (Mattie, the smart one, had already jumped the into the backseat.) With a little encouragement, the dogs finally laid on the back seat and we finished our trip home.

Shortly after we got home, I informed hubby that I felt like going for a swim. This time I piled into the car, sans dogs, and headed out to my favorite closest lake. Last time I went there, I was not brave enough to head into the water, however this time ... feeling buoyed by a rather good day and spurred on by a warm day, I dove in to cool off. I did not swim for any great length of time - the swim cut short by the realization that I had forgotten to bring a towel and that the park gate would be locked shortly. Scooping up my blanket, hat, classes, and tiptoeing on tender toes back to the car, I headed back into town feeling happy, satisfied and just a bit pink from being kissed by the sun today.

Well tomorrow anyway.... planning to leave at 5am to beat the heat and some of the traffic. We have been living the last few days with an air mattress and folding chairs, but it's been fine. Our stuff and furniture left on Monday and arrived in LA today so it will be waiting for us when we get there.

Today we woke up to rain and storms on our last day in Tucson. It seemed appropriate because, although I hate the summer in Tucson, I do love the rains. The desert smells good, the hot sun gets hidden by clouds, there is awesome thunder and lightning and often rainbows.

It has been really sad saying good bye to people as well as the desert but I will be back at least once to defend my dissertation. The exact date at this point depends on when this manuscript gets out and comes back.

OK, signing off before I start to get weepy...next post will be from LA. We will get internet on Friday am so I can post pictures soon as we get settled.

I was driving along, minding my own business, when I noticed two men on the side of the road holding huge signs that said "FEAR GOD" and "TRUST JESUS."

It seemed kinda strange to me to have those two phrases together because they don't really seem to go together.

Are they saying that we should be afraid of God but that Jesus is OK?

Now, yeah, I know I grew up in the church so I get the entire word "fear" and it's meaning, and the historical context, but is it really going to make much sense to someone just walking by? And is it going to "save" anyone?

Driving south on Hwy 11 there isn’t too much to stop and see for several miles, so enjoy the panoramic views. Soon your Tour Guide will give you information about Ho’okena Beach and Milolii.

Ho’okena is a lovely gray sand beach about 5 miles off the main hwy. This is a nice beach for swimming, snorkeling and picnicking. There are some trails to hike and decent restrooms. Camping is also available by permit only. Your Tour Guide will give more information about trails to hike, camping, and where to get snorkel gear and camping permits.

Driving a few miles further, headed toward the volcano park, is the turn off for Milolii. Again about 5 miles off the main highway, Milolii is one of the last fishing villages in Hawaii. On the way down the views are spectacular, so keep your camera handy. Tour Guide will give you lots of history about this area, so make sure you listen to it on the way. If you are up for a short hike, park at the Miloli'i County Beach Park and hike the shoreline trail to beautiful, secluded, empty Honomalino Bay.

As with anywhere you travel, make sure to lock your vehicle when you leave it and don’t leave valuables in plain sight.

Tour Guide will show many other great places to explore as you continue driving south, including the famous, beautiful and wild South Point, southernmost point in the US. We’ll jump ahead at this point to the southernmost town in the United States, Na’alehu. This quaint plantation town is a throwback to when sugar cane was the main export. Na’alehu boasts being a favorite spot for Mark Twain to rest and enjoy the old Hawaii lifestyle. The Punalu’u Bakery has become famous throughout the state for their sumptuous sweet bread. These are just two great reasons to stop and take in some of the local flavor.

Driving about 10 miles further south, your Tour Guide will recommend the Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, one of the top 44 sites on the Big Island. This beach is not only famous for the jet black sand but also for the Hawaiian Green sea turtles and the Hawksbill sea turtles who reside nearby. Often you can see these magnificent creatures sunning on the black sand and, at certain times of the year, nesting and laying their eggs. All turtles in Hawaii are endangered species so touching them is forbidden and a $20,000 dollar fine is strictly enforced. Get up close for photos but please leave them alone. Tour Guide will give you some of the rich history of this area as well.

Driving south from Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, you will notice the highway begin to ascend toward the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Just after you see the Volcano Park sign, there will be a small parking lot, on the ocean side of the hwy, called the Ka'u Desert Trail Head. A one mile hike on this trail will bring you to the warrior footprints and a petroglyph field. Tour Guide gives the stories and history of this fascinating area.

Inside each woman there is a queen. She is the ruler of her world and in complete control of her kingdom. She is powerful in every aspect of that world; but some days, being the queen can be very hard work, especially when she has to make tough decisions in her life and work. A queen always tries to be ‘good’, but it unfortunately it doesn’t always turn out that way.

To each queen there are two sides. In Carolyn Myss’ works on archetypes, she describes this as a ‘light’ side and a ‘dark’ side. Debbie Ford called them simply ‘light’ and ‘shadow’, but the
concept is the same. For each archetype there must be ‘light’ and ‘dark’, but they are actually two sides of the same coin. We see this in our childhood fairy tales such as “The Wizard of Oz”, with characters like Glenda the Good Witch and The Wicked Witch of the West. The verdict reached by readers of these is usually put in the context of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ in our society.’

You might automatically say, “I’m Glenda!” because you choose to identify only with the ‘light’ side of this archetype. However, there are always two sides to the coin: you cannot have one without the other. And each side must coexist within each person. Some attributes are more pronounced than others, but still they absolutely must be part of the same person. This is why one person’s judgment of another can be such a harsh reflection back at times. The very thing you find despicable about another person is merely the shadow or ‘dark’ side of yourself that you try to hide or suppress.

In the case of the queen, her ‘light’ side is benevolent, kind, generous and patient. She wishes only that those in her kingdom be happy, peaceful and co-exist peacefully together, very much like Glenda and the land of the Munchkins. The ‘dark’ side of the queen is forceful, mean, angry, impatient and frankly isn’t very concerned about how her actions impact the people she leads.
Those flying monkeys looked pretty miserable and beaten down, didn’t they?

Even if you are the ‘Glenda’ type, inside every ‘light’ Queen resides also the ability to become quickly angered and to be forceful when she’s scared. She also knows that she can be very destructive at times. The same is true for every ‘dark’ queen -- she has the ability to be vulnerable and gentle, given the right circumstances.

Why is this important? Because it’s important to identity why you come to particular conclusions about others and what may be lurking behind the scenes. Recognizing this will help you more readily understand that which you fear the most about yourself. But there is an upside. And that is by embracing both the ‘dark’ and the ‘light’ side of your queen-ship, you begin to understand the benefits of those shadows. Sometimes a queen needs to be tough or fierce in negotiations. These tools can be useful when they are balanced within the individual. Learn to see all aspects of yourself as ‘good’ and valuable; not just what your mom told you.
