Sorry folks as for sometime now I had been through a very sadistic part of my life and was totally unable to blog and keep you all updated with the latest stuff or my personal reviews on various topics. Having bought the all New Black Nokia E90 for a staggering amount of Rs 40,000 (appx. $ 1000), it had not even been a month that my joy ride came to an abrupt stop. Having done a review here and giving a verdict of thumbs up, I now take my review back and give it a big thumbs down. It has been a very disappointing experience in all as now I am completely paralyzed and unable to use my E90. The build quality of the high end Nokia Phones has now been buried and all you can expect now from them is nothing less than a piece of garbage. (I know these words sound hard, but I guess this is what you would say when you see your hard earned $ 1000 burn to ashes in front of your very own eyes).

[caption id="attachment_494" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Here's looking at the back"][/caption]

The X1 has a number of key features that you will definitely find very useful and can become possible influencing factors in your buying decision, apart from the very elegant QWERTY keyboard (read here). In that secret meeting with X1, he showed me all the juicy features that I will share here. I also got a peek at the X1 Whitepaper that defines the technical features of this baby.

Notably the generous use of metal in a PDA Phone giving it a more expensive look and feel, and obviously the QWERTY keyboard defines the X1 in a different class from the Omnia, iPhone and even the Diamond. The soon to be launched Touch Pro is probably the one that will give the X1 a good run for the money. Interestingly, both the X1 and the Touch Pro are made by HTC. The X1 is believed to have been designed by Sony Ericsson but the Original Device Manufacturer (ODM) is HTC.

[caption id="attachment_495" align="alignright" width="300" caption="The X1's 3.2 Mega Pixel Camera; see the 3.5 inch audio jack protruding on the right edge"][/caption]

Wait! There's more of course. The X1 3.2 Mega Pixel camera is believed to be supplied by Sony Ericsson themselves. This is in keeping the tradition of the cameras of the other Sony Ericsson devices but it's not the top of the line Carl Zeiss lens in the Sony cameras. The Omnia clearly beats the X1 in this area giving us a 5 Mega Pixel camera. The Photo Light is a white LED providing adequate lighting in close proximity photography. I believe this will progress to a higher capacity LED in future models.

Although Sony Ericsson produces the main chipsets for their other devices, the X1 is powered by the Qualcomm's latest and most powerful processor at 528 MHz. This is the processor that HTC uses in all their higher end Windows Mobile devices. HTC had used the Samsung processor in lower end PDA phones which lagged in their performance. There is also a Hardware 3D graphics processor in the X1 which will enhance the graphics display performance definitely.

At the top of the X1, you will find a 3.5 mm Audio Jack that will fit your regular headphones. This gives a broad selection of headsets one can buy in the market, from the snuggly fitted stub headsets to the acoustic headphones. The X1 is aiming to keep the tradition of the Walkman in providing us with enviable audio pleasure.

[caption id="attachment_496" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="The non-standard 3.0 inch WVGA screen"][/caption]

The screen is 3.0 inches, totally non-standard in the Windows Mobile world. This is not surprising as the earlier P-series had a unique screen form factor too. The screen resolution at Wide VGA is probably the best in class. Wide because the standard is 2.8 inches found on the Diamond and also the Touch Pro. Wide because it gives an excellent 800x480 pixels verses the 640x480 VGA resolution. The X1 beats the Omnia in this respect given the Omnia's surprisingly larger screen size at 3.2 inches but at a shocking resolution of Wide QVGA (240x400). The X1 has close to 4 times the number of pixels over the Omnia. This means the details of a photo will look much better on the X1.

The X1 boasts the Xperia Panel Concept as an interface enhancement over the standard Windows Mobile interface. The TouchFlo is HTC's offering and the TouchWiz UI is the Samsung's offering in the Omnia. X1 is not to be left out and the Panel Concept are icon blocks organized in panels that launches specific applications. Since I didn't have a closer look at this, I shall not comment until I receive the production set.

[caption id="attachment_503" align="alignright" width="300" caption="X1's well loaded battery, top in its class"][/caption]

One last neat feature is the X1's well loaded lithium polimer battery rated at 1500 mAh. It's one of the biggest battery around. Depending on how the X1 optimizes in consuming power, this battery can take the X1 a long, long way through the day, perhaps even two.

Yes, there is GPS in the X1. It's Quad Band Edge and Tri Band 3G. It has a QCIF camera for Video Phone sessions. It plays YouTube video but not DivX like the Omnia. Guess you can't have everything in the X1.

I can't wait for the production ready set to do an in-depth review. Enough of the teasers for now. Stay tuned for more when the time comes.

As we can recall, I have shared my opinion on E90 physical design. Well,it is not really in detail but at least we can figure out something from it;reliability, durability, toughness, design architecture. etc etc.. Further discussion shall focus on the Operating System (OS) used to run this giant 'candy bar'. Still as before, they are really confident with their in house OS, Symbian 9.2 3rd Edition. The different is that this E90 is using S60 platform or user interface, as compare with other older 9300 and 9500 communicator, which are using S80 platform.

S80 GUI

S60 3rd Edition GUI (internal display)

S60 3rd Edition GUI (external display)

Why need to migrate GUI platform?

The E90 is taking huge leap in the 10-year history of Nokia Communicators. It is no longer Series 80 based but instead it utilizes the S60 3.1 (3rd Edition Feature Pack 1) platform running on top of Symbian OS 9.2. Why is that?
Based on nokia, Symbian OS 9 and above introduce many fundamental changes including new kernel, new compiler, new optimized binary format, modified file system structure, new, much tighter security system and so on. This all means: no backward compatibility with pre-9 OS versions. So even if Nokia wanted too keep the Series 80 platform for the Communicator range, they would have to create a new edition of the platform based on Symbian OS 9.x which would involve a lot of work and funds but it would still mean no backward compatibility with old S80-based Communicator models and 3rd party software! The only way to retain compatibility would be to stay with old, pre-v9 Symbian OS version, which would make absolutely no sense as it would mean no access to the latest mobile technologies, or simply no space for any progress. So instead of heading for the blind alley, Nokia decided to switch to the S60 (formerly called Series 60) platform, installed in hundreds of millions of smartphones and supported by thousands of experienced developers.

easy to say - nokia does not want to waste energy and money to further develop the S80 GUI platform as the S60 platform could be extended easily to fit communicator smartphone. (malas le tuh)

How new S60 3rd offer excellent GUI?

If you are using N series smartphone, then this E90 is the same except it has wider screen and with clamshell. As described in the Hardware part, the E90 has two fully functional screens. Both provide access to all system applications and functions and switching between them is fully automatic as you open or close the cover. The external display shows the UI and system applications just as they look on any other S60 3rd Edition smartphone with a QVGA screen. The internal screen, thanks to its high resolution and wide proportions, provides an EXTENDED view in which many applications show additional information, more functions or simply more content at once.

Personalization

Just like any other S60 smartphone, the E90 is fully skinnable. What's more, it is also fully compatible with existing S60 themes (though some of them, not scalable and not prepared with the internal screen's resolution in mind, may look ugly). With themes, you can radically change the look of most of UI elements: title/status bars, window backgrounds, color palette, font and font color, ringtones, the look of battery/network indicators, the look of the digital and analog clock shown on the Active standby screen, etc. You can also customize screen wallpapers, screen saver (Flash animations are supported) and the way the main Menu works (grid or list).

As I already mentioned, this is where users of previous Communicator models will find the biggest changes. Being based on S60 3rd Edition, the E90 system software originates from small screen Series 60 smartphones, with all the consequences. The E90 product team did A LOT to to enhance standard S60 applications to make use of E90's unique features (huge screen, keyboard) and implement some functions Series 80 devices' users got used to (e.g. keyboard shortcuts), but with some of them, especially PIM software (Contacts, Calendar) and the Office suite, they didn't manage to achieve full functionality and ease of use known from older Communicators. Having said that, I also need to remind that the E90 works much faster than 9210 or 9500/9300 so even if some functionality is missing or available in a less intuitive way, the overall performance and the powerful hardware of the E90 in most cases makes working with the E90 easier and more convenient. So it's a mixture of some cons and pros and the overall impression will depend on your personal needs and preferences. Let's take a closer look at the most important applications.

Contact operation

Calendar

What I don't like about calendar is that it has no color option for us to set appointment/task. So, it is quit rigid and not really user-friendly.

note : you would be surprised also when some of the third party software are unable to be installed on this device. invalid certificate lah..certificate expired lah...so, if you really wanna avoid this thing, just download a patch (cracker) to re-write the kernel to enable all application regardless cert. status.. what a funny expensive this "batu bata phone".but have to ignore security lah...trojan come in ,allow ...

System Application

this is where users of previous Communicator models will find the biggest changes. So, easy to say, there are pros and cons in migrating into new GUI platform.

Web browsing

The E90 has the standard S60's Safari-based Nokia browser which, compared to Series 80's Opera browser, scores really well. First of all, it is very fast and it renders correctly most of web sites, as long as they are not overloaded with Javascript and things like that or if the server doesn't force mobile version of the site instead of the normal one (this is because the browser identifies itself as "SymbianOS/9.2; U; Series60/3.1 NokiaE90...." and some websites automatically switch to the mobile version if the "SymbianOS" part is found). In my personal ranking of mobile browsers, the E90 browser takes third position right after the Opera browser of the Linux-based N800 Internet Tablet, which (on very similar hardware) works even faster, correctly renders virtually any websites (including Google Video and YouTube not supported by E90) and offers great fit-to-screen mode missing from the Nokia browser (Nokia's semitransparent MiniMap helps in navigation but it obviously doesn't reduce the need for scrolling wide pages horizontally), and also the Iphone safari, which has specific cache to hold web info for faster reloading. Probably the most annoying "feature" of the E90 browser is its inability to highlight and copy/paste any text (except for webforms and text fields where the usual Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V combination can be used). The browser supports multiple "windows" but new window opens only when a web page requests so, it can't be done manually. The most excellent feature of new S60 platform is on its fast web loading and rendering which really give a major different among ather smartphone.

note: E90 does not support opera mobile as this application does not recognize E90 stupid "mouse". so if you install opera mobile, you will see it with cursor but cannot move it. Also i am waiting for the firefox mobile...huhuhuhuh really fascinating.

Multimedia

Talking about camera functionality, this camera deliver very excellent quality in both picture and video. As I have tested with the camera sifu, Bro. Edi from ITD, the result is great and much more better than HTC Touch, Iphone or even O2 Exec. Besides, it equipped with a lot of feature to set the picture experience. But what I hate most is the button.really slumpy.

Pictures and videos can be viewed using the built-in Gallery application (in case of videos it launches the built-in RealOne Player). Nothing exceptional here, just a good working mutimedia browser with thumbnail and full screen view and various zoom levels. On the small screen it looks just like on an ordinary S60 3rd Edition phone, whereas on the large display it uses the extra screen space for quick preview.

Dr. Wajdi try to communicate with.....ehem....secret

wajah wajah yang poyo masa wireless launching

note: the sound system from this E90 is good..but cannot compare my cambridge 5.1 and altec lansing sub woofer la...

Conclusion

If you have experience in using nokia 9300 or 9500, you might probably disappointed with a lot of lacking features in the new E90 such no Fax, multiple SMS, and too simplified function. But for those who do not care all of these but looking for a faster device, secured OS, good support, you might look into it. For me, It is always has pros and cons. Beside candy bar, and people will look at you and they say ; eleh poyo sangat, berlagak macam kaya le tuh (just to show off) -hehhehe.If you notice at the Die hard 4.0 movie, the guy ( hacker) was using nokia 9300i to hack the power plant management system.

[caption id="attachment_404" align="alignright" width="128" caption="Arc Slider Design"][/caption]

The X1 comes with what Sony Ericsson calls an Arc Slider Design where by sliding out the screen reveals a really neat keyboard. The screen slides out and slightly up in an arc fashion, hence, the name. But it doesn't tilt upwards like the HTC TyTN II, just slightly up. It's somewhere between the TyTN and the TyTN II. What you will find in the brush metal body bracing the keyboard is a set of great QWERTY keys and those keys are probably one of the best I've used so far. We'll tackle the screen in another posting. More on the keyboard.

[caption id="attachment_405" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Keyboard for two thumbs - my hand :-)"][/caption]

The first thing that impressed me is that the keys are larger than most other keyboards. Nice big keys make it easy for my thumbs. Although I've seen people use two index fingers on such keyboards, they are actually designed for the two thumbs while the device fits snuggly in two hands. Perhaps the production units that I hope to lay my hands on later will give me a better experience on the tactile feel of the keyboard.

Suffice to say that the keyboard is well designed and has a solid feel. Supported by the brush metal body, the keyboard can be used with full confidence with a very good feedback. That is very important in a good keyboard. Otherwise, one might as well go straight to the on-screen keypad.

The keyboard is a definitive characteristic of the X1. It separates this device from others which are fully touch screen PDA phones like the new Samsung Omnia as well as the Apple iPhone which provides only on-screen keypads.

[caption id="attachment_406" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Side View of X1 - Note the thickness and the metal body"][/caption]

The thickness of the X1 with the keyboard is 17mm, thinner than the HTC TyTN II which is 19mm. Don't look down on a 2mm thickness. Losing that 2mm makes the X1 much nicer to hold. The X1 is shorter than the TyTN II by 2mm and narrower by 6mm.

The X1 with the keyboard gives the feel of slim, thin and narrow as compared to the TyTN II being big, fat and thick. The X1 opened with the keyboard is actually easy to hold because it is lighter than the TyTN II by a whopping 45 grams. The combination gives the X1 the edge in overall feel and weight to hold, especially the cold steel.

The X1 is not for everybody. You must have an affinity to use a keyboard and the X1 keyboard is the best in its class too. I used to think that the ladies will shy away from a PDA with a QWERTY keyboard but I have been proven wrong. There are many ladies using the HTC TyTN II. The X1 will give them a good reason to upgrade when it is available.

I would classify the X1 in the same range as those with a keyboard like the TyTN II and the Nokia E90. Given what I've seen, the X1 has the best specification in its class. Certainly, if the X1 isn't, there would not be a market for it. Sony Ericsson must make the X1 better than all the the devices in its class that are already in the market. By the time the X1 is launched, I hope there aren't any other devices that will eclipse it. Oops, I didn't say when the X1 will be available yet. Maybe next time. ;-)

1. Tangentbordet...

[caption id="attachment_1183" align="alignnone" width="389" caption="THE E71 QWERTY v. THE E90 QWERTY v. T9 INPUT"][/caption]

One of the reasons the E71 was so hotly anticipated was because it brought QWERTY back into the Eseries after quite a while, the last Eseries in the same form factor being the E61i. But because of its size, it created doubts in the minds of a lot of people about its real world usability. I have been a Nseries man for a long time and since it still offers no QWERTY, I became really proficient with T9 and never really felt the need for QWERTY. A few months ago I bought my first Eseries device, the E90 and still found myself using T9 on it more than the internal keyboard. It was just too wide for me, however with the E71 that changed. This in my opinion is the best form factor for a QWERTY device and when coupled with predictive text and auto correct, it makes for a deadly combo.

This post pits the E90 and a T9 based device, against the E71 and we try and find out which is the best text entry solution.

In order to find out which was the fastest in the real world usage, where we will regularly need to input words, numbers, names and so on, I created the above sample sentence which takes care of most of these things. The sentence was written five times on each device and the corresponding seconds it took me to complete were recorded. This was done to try and get a better picture and guard against extreme results. Here is how each of the devices, namely the E90, E71 and the N95 performed.

(Note: I was going to do this test with the N78 as the T9 device but dropped it because it does not represent the regular T9 keypads we normally find).

THE N95 - I pride myself on my T9 speeds and the trusty N95 didn't let me down. It took me an average 81 seconds to key in the 40 words. (Note: The smiley and symbol have been counted as a word)

THE E71 - I have large thumbs and the smallish keypad was always going to be a problem, but with auto correct holding fort I was faster than I expected - averaging at 79.2 seconds for the sentence. For anyone who's thumbs are any smaller, expect this figure to be much lower.

The one thing I have learnt from this exercise is that predictive text is not always useful when you need to type fast and infact, sometimes becomes a problem. What is needed is auto correct and I'd like it if there was an option to turn off predictive text while keeping auto correct.

THE E90 - The Eseries Flagship with its large keys and dedicated number buttons should have enjoyed a distinct advantage here, but due to frequent spelling errors and the not so efficient spacebar, it 81 seconds on an average. This is inspite of the fact that after typing on the smaller E71, my speed on the E90 has increased.

The above test included all sorts of variables, but there are times when we only input text, for example while writing somebody an email. To give an accurate description of how these devices would perform when only text entry was an issue, I carried out another test with the same parameters as above.

THE N95 - It took me an average 42.8 seconds to fire in the 26 words. Since there were no numbers or names, T9 had no problems whatsoever.

THE E71 - The E71 too averaged exactly same as the N95 at 42.8 seconds.

THE E90 - Surprisingly the E90 took slightly longer at about 43 seconds. Since there were no numbers involved it didn't enjoy any particular benefits, moreover the lack of spelling/auto correct support also didn't help either.

I have used the N95 for almost 10 months, the E90 for 3 months and the E71 for about two weeks. So its safe to assume that I was pretty comfortable using their respective input mechanisms. Before I undertook this test, I thought the E90 would have an advantage because of the larger keys and the dedicated numerals. Its width was going to be a disadvantage. The E71 would be around the same level, but where numbers came in, it would take a severe beating. My trusty N95 would sail with text and suffer with custom words. All reasonable expectations.

What has come out of this test is almost a reiteration of what I thought. With a mixture of text and numbers, the E90 does 33 words a minute, while the E71 comes in at 30 with the N95 being a close third at 29. The N95 has surprised me a little with its performance and other T9 based keypad such as that on the N82 or N78 would never be able to match this performance. With pure text in play, all devices finished at a very good average of about 36 words per minute.

Keeping the figures aside for a moment, here are the conclusions I have come to:

- The E71 despite its smaller keyboard can still hold its own and with a little practise you should be able to get fair speeds on it. However concertration is a must and you possibly can't type without looking.

- The E90 needs the auto correct option from the E71, with that it will be a killer text behmoth. Although, it stills holds the crown of being the best option. Its much less taxing typing on its keyboard vis-a-vis the E71.

- If you are just looking for casual data entry, even good T9 phones such as the N95 and possibly the N96 will more than suffice.

- Will I buy the E71 just for the QWERTY? No. But there is so much to like in it that I am finding it very hard to resist.

Have I overlooked anything? Let me know and I'll be sure to update the post.

In this phone the company has declared E65 the best and a perfect executive phone. This phone has a Hi Fi connectivity that makes it a third generation phone (3G). To add the charm into the glory of this phone Nokia has made it a slider phone that enhances its looks. The phone works on a Symbian Operation Systems that is responsible to add or remove any required software in the phone.

Nokia E65 has several other useful features like outstanding messaging facility.
In order to make it a executive phone the company has given the addition email protocols like SMTP, POP, IMAP4 and IMAP. These protocols are responsible for the better management of the user’s personal as well as the professional emails. You can even send the attachments with your emails through the Nokia E65. Additionally, to make this phone more suitable for executive class, the company has also equipped a multifaceted organizer for small - small office needs. These needs include calculator, calendar, note pad, along with a phone book. Nokia has also put an alarm clock, timer and money converter to this master piece.

This is not all; Nokia E65 also has an option of conference calls with the hands free speakers. This is very helpful for an executive to talk with different people at the same point of time. This phone also has a powerful two mega pixel camera that gives you a complete freedom to capture the sight’s pictures. The camera also has an option of digital zoom. You can even record the videos. This camera also has an option of multi shot, this helps you recognizing the best captured shot and eliminating the bad ones. You can easily download these pictures to your computer with the help of the USB connectivity.

So, all the above mentioned features of Nokia E65 mobile phone prove that this phone is a complete executive phone.

Nokia Email

[caption id="attachment_407" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="Nokia Email"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_411" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="Nokia Email , parametros"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_412" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="Nokia Email ,as bandejas de correo"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_413" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="Nokia Email , mensaje"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_401" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Nokia E-Mail"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_402" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Nokia Push E-Mail configuración "][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_403" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Nokia Push E-Mail ejemplo"][/caption]

Short answer: My E61i has about 75% of the E90's features for about 50% of the price, and thus for me is a better fit.

What, you want more? Ok, fine...

Long answer: The E90 is absolutely for you if you're a comedy mogul and/or in need of an uncompromising business device. It's not quite a laptop replacement but the vastly-wide screen allows for some serious work on spreadsheets, email and the like.

That said, it's not without its flaws -- namely:

The QWERTY Keypad

The keys themselves are nice and big, and have a nice "click" to them. The dedicated number row also comes in extremely handy. And the dedicated row of shortcuts above that? Well now you're just spoiling me!

So what's to complain about? Well, in my opinion the keypad is just too wide to use comfortably -- and I've done a fair amount of research into QWERTY usability.

For the record I also tried the keypad with the E90 on a table, like a laptop. This didn't work for me either -- the keys are too small to touch-type with, which doesn't matter anyway because whichever digits you use to input data will end up blocking the screen from view, as it's very wide but not tall.

Oh, and the backlight is far too weak, and there doesn't seem to be any settings to adjust it.

[wp_caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Open Wide"][/wp_caption]

The Heft

The E90 is entirely usable if you're in a boardroom meeting or the executive lounge of an international airport, but on the move the horizontal clamshell becomes a bit too unwieldy for my tastes.

When closed it's great to take calls on and honestly doesn't even seem that big. But like my old hiptop, when opened up this monster makes for quite a challenge to hammer out a text with one hand -- especially with the soft menu buttons positioned up on the screen portion of the device.

And there's also the matter of that horrible camera button I previously wrote about...

[wp_caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Interior Screen"][/wp_caption]

If you can live with these shortcomings you'll be rewarded with a serious productivity tool, one with a proud lineage and a notable community of users including Agents Mulder & Sculley and The Saint.

You'll also be treated to the best mobile operating system on the planet, but I'm biased that way...

I had the opportunity this year to spend Canada's National Holiday in Ottawa, Ontario, our nation's capital city. And since I didn't want to burden myself with a heavy laptop I instead packed only my brand-new Nokia E90 -- graciously on loan from Nokia's WOM World -- for the two-day trip.

The night before my departure I transferred my PIM data over to the E90 via the appropriate iSync plug-in from Nokia. I've said this before and I'll say it again: Nokia has done everything right here for Mac users; in fact, because I can also sync up to-do lists along with my address book and calendar events I would go so far to say that S60 handsets are actually more compatible with the Mac than Apple's own mobile device!

Once on the road I had almost five hours to check email, text friends and surf the web with Opera Mini. The direct morning sun had absolutely no adverse effect on the E90's wide and perfectly readable interior screen. When closed the handset doesn't actually seem so big, but when open I found it quite a stretch to move my fingers over the wide keyboard with any kind of speed. Though the keys are generously large and have a nice feel, I think shaving half an inch or so off either end of the handset would go a long way towards making it more usable. Shall I go ahead and do this for you, WOM World?

Upon my arrival I quickly set up the E90 to access the available WiFi network where I was staying. My host also graciously offered a guest laptop as a tempting alternative, and I actually ended up using it for about half the time I was there. For basic web consumption the E90 with Opera Mini is perfectly fine, but I share a lot of links via Digg, Reddit and the like and could really use a mobile browser that supports bookmarklets.

On the morning of July 1st we made our way to Meech Lake for a scenic drive and hike. The E90 was safely ensconced in my sidebag and despite its heft, didn't weigh me down any more than my other camera I had packed with it. You can see a video sample of a babbling brook here -- note that YouTube has almost certainly upscaled it past it's original 320 x 240 pixel resolution.

Later that afternoon it was back to The Hill to join the crowds for the big show. It was here that another E90 issue became apparent: Though the built-in 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera soundly trumps the fixed-focus imager on my E61i, the software and/or camera button borders on unusable.

Take this souvenir photo of a famous Canadian guilty pleasure, for example. By the time I was able to snap this blurry pic the freshly deep-fried dough wasn't even hot anymore -- first I mistakenly captured a video instead of a still image, and then I stood there like an idiot in the middle of the street waiting with my E90 pointed squarely at my dessert, waiting for some sign of confirmation that the photo of this thing had actually been taken.

Part of the problem is the camera button itself. First off, pressing it does NOT open up the camera app like it does on Nokia's N95. and unlike the big alphanumeric keys on the inside of the handset that go clickety-click, this important part of the machine/human interface has a lot of give but zero tactile feedback! It's as if some Nokia engineer walked in gravel on his way into the E90 design lab, picked a piece of it off of the sole of his shoe and said: "Hey, this would make an all right camera button..."

Another annoyance occurs if the phone happens to ring while the handset is open. My instinct would be to close the clamshell so I could take the call like I would on a regular phone, but closing up the unit immediately terminates the connection, so you're forced to leave it open and make the caller suffer through a typically tinny speakerphone exchange.

But here's a testament to the E90's unabashed business prowess: Over the fifty-four or so hours I spent away from home I was able to secure a television interview with a local news station about Canada's GSM monopoly through a combination of phone calls, emails, texts and map searches -- all performed without so much as a shrug by this super-powered device!

I've used the black Nokia E90 communicator for over one week now. In this post I want to share my thoughts about this device with you.

The E90 was anounced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in early 2007 besides the E61i and the E65. Since the device is available there are quite a few problems like the internal keypad that is touching the screen. With the black E90 Nokia wanted to fix the problems - but have they successfully fixed all the problems? This post will find it out!

Advantages:

great Design

full QWERTY-keyboard

huge & sharp internal screen

keys on the front have a firm pressure-point

good camera with flash and autofocus

good loudspeakers

miniUSB

great build quality

Disadvantages:

small front-display

only 2.5mm headphone jack

bad camera-key

internal screen is a fingerprint-magnet

internal navigation key is too small

As you can see in the advantages/disadvantages lists above there are a some points I don't like about this device.

Positive aspects:

The E90 features a full QWERTY-keypad that I very like. The new, flatter keys of this improved E90-version are just great. The have some kind of "soft" pressure-point nevertheless you can press them very well. They have a very low lightning, but in the dark you can see all the keys properly. You have to turn on the lightning of the QWERTY-keypad manually with a special key.

The internal screen is just great. It has a resolution of 800 x 352 pixels, so it is very sharp. I haven't seen a sharper screen in a mobile phone before. The user-experience while surfing in the web is great. Because the screen is so wide you can see the websites almost as on your computer. The screen is also readable in bright conditions e.g. in the sun. The screen has no extra plastic-protection in front of the LCD - it is like the N95's display.

The camera of the E90 is great. It has 3.2 Megapixels with autofocus. The pictures are sharp and clear. They even look good on a big computer-screen. I think you definitely can compare this business-device with the K800i from Sony Ericsson. The video recording is in VGA-resolution at 30 frames per second - very impressive for a business-device. You can find great image-samples here.

This business-device is a great allrounder: It also features very impressive stereo speakers. The speakers are placed on the backside of the device. They aren't as good as the N95s' loudspeakers, but just bear in mind that the E90 is designed for business-users. The sound of the loudspeakers is loud and clear and they are placed well.

Negative aspects:

Let's start with the small front display. There are no doubts that the E90 is a big device. On the front there is so much free space Nokia could have used. I think that the display as well as the keys could be a little bit bigger, but especially the display.

The E90 features a 2.5 mm headphone jack. I like the idea of a "real" headphone jack, but I don't like that it is a 2.5 mm. I would prefer a 3.5 mm headphone jack, because almost all the MP3-Players, iPods and other gadgets have such a 3.5 mm headphone jack. If you own a phone with such a 3.5 mm jack you will not need to buy new headphones if you want to use them with it.

The worst aspect of the whole phone is definetely the camera-key. Come on Nokia, what the hell should this camera-key be? First of all it is too small. It is very hard to capture a photo with it. You will need to press it half way down to use the autofocus, okay no problem here. But if you want to capture the focussed image you need to press the key exactly on an extremely small pressure-point. The other bad aspect is that you can only press the key aslope. This should be definitely fixed in the next communicator.

The last negative point about this device is the navigation key on the QWERTY-keyboard. I don't like it very much because it is some kind of too small. I have small fingers although I can't use it properly. I would prefer if it would be a little bit bigger, because sometimes I press the middle of the navipad instead of some direction.

At last I want to say that I like the black E90 communicator very much. All in all it is a great device with a perfect build-quality. There are some disadvantages but they aren't that big - You can live with them. The only thing I really hate is definitely the camera-key.

Nokia Email is an application which automatically pushes your email from your IMAP or POP email account straight to your Nokia S60 device. According to the official website following devices are supported: the E51, E61, E61i, E65, E66, E71, E90, N73, N80, N81 8GB and the N95. However, yet I don't know whether the N82, N95 8GB and so on are also supported. Anyway, although it's just in beta phase you should give Nokia Email a chance, especially since it's for free. Jump over to sign up.

Route 66, one of the most famous navigation solution for the mobile handset, is available in versio

Route 66, one of the most famous navigation solution for the mobile handset, is available in version 8 now. The really kind Route66 Support provided me with a free version of Route66 Mobile 8 and the DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) maps. Let’s check how good it works:

Sales package:

The sales package includes:

A CD/DVD with the navigationsoftware, maps and manuals

Route 66 Mobile 8 – Quick Start Guide Manual

Route 66 Sync – Extra Services And Content For Your Navigation Manual

Installation:
The Route 66 Mobile 8 and the whole map content are already on the CD/DVD. Once you insert the CD/DVD into the PC the Route 66 Installer opens up and you can start transfer the maps and the sis file on your handset. It's really easy and everything is explained really well. Unfortunately, you have to delete all content from your memory card in order to get the sis file. Therefore I advice you to save everything on your computer before doing this. After the installation you’re ready to use Route 66. You can find the Route 66 Mobile 8 icon in its own folder called ‘’Route66’’. After the splash screen and some question appeared Route 66 tries to find your current GPS position and tries to zoom right to the place you’re currently located.

Navigation:

To start an new route just hit ‘’1’’ or hit the left softkey and than ‘’Search’’. You can choose between six different search modes:

Free text

Address

Nearby: eg. Attractions, Parking, Shopping and more…

History: your results until yet

My landmarks: Select your Homeaddress, Office or create other landmarks for even easily navigation

Contacts: Search addresses out of your contactbook

Once you’ve found the right address you can decide what you want to do with this address/place. So you can:

Show on map

Navigate to

Add to route

Save

Sent

Map display

After you set your destination and you have a connection with enough GPS satellites you can start the navigation. Of course you can save routes so that you can use them also afterwords. In the test using my Nokia N95 it worked pretty good and navigate me good to my destination, whether with the car or by feed. During the navigation you can choose between three different layouts. More over, you can choose between night colors or day colors, or choose between 2D and 3D perspective.

As you can see, you can get informed about your current speed, your current position, expected arrival and a bunch more.

If you turn into a wrong street or you miss a street the software recalculates the route immediately and gives you a new route or the best way to turn around.

GPS View:
By hitting ‘’5’’ you will find some GPS information with four subfolders. These GPS information are giving you information about your current position, speed, altitude, and some more.

Shortcuts:
To easily switch between different view modes, see the GPS status or listen to the latest announcement you just have to hit a special key. So, you don't need to make 5 clicks.

1 Search

2 Change layout

3. Change between Day- and Nightmode

4 Progress bar

5 GPS View

6 Switching between 2D and 3D

7 Search

8 Zooming to whole card

9 Volume on/off

0 Repeat of the recent driving instruction

* zooming in

+ zooming out

Verdict:

To put in a nutshell, Route 66 is a great navigation solution for your S60 device for a good price. The tested version costs about 60€ which is indeed a good price. Unfortunately, you can use just one device per license, which I can understand but otherwise some people change their devices every month. But all in all Route 66 is worth having on a device.
