Have you received a fax advertising a "Florida Bahama's Cruise" for $398 pp? If so, read on.

Under federal law (Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991, 47 U.S. Code 227), it is illegal to send unsolicited commercial faxes. The definition, in my opinion, is broad enough to include junk email (AKA "spam"), but IANAL and that's beyond the scope of this post. The law makes it illegal

(b)(1)(C) to use any telephone facsimile machine, computer, or other device to send an unsolicited advertisement to a telephone facsimile machine

and it defines 'telephone facsimile machine' as equipment that "has the capacity"

(a)(2)(A) to transcribe text or images, or both, from paper into an electronic signal and to transmit that signal over a regular telephone line, or
(a)(2)(B) to transcribe text or images (or both) from an electronic signal received over a regular telephone line onto paper.

The law allows individuals to sue the sender for $500 per violation. I am considering filing my first small claims court action due to an unsolicited fax sent to my toll-free fax number, even though the violator is in Florida. Why? The egregious nature of the fax and the company's record of skirting the law.

The only identifying information on the fax is "SOTA License# ST-23944." Turns out "SOTA" stands for "Seller of Travel" (I think), and Florida License ST-23944 lead me to a BBB report on a company, SPECIAL T TRAVEL SERVICE INC:

The company "offers travel packages through telemarketing and their web site... This company has an unsatisfactory customer experience history with the Better Business Bureau.... This company is licensed by Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The license number is ST 23944. This company also does business as Travel Shopping Spree T."

From the Florida BBB Report:

Georgia: On August 1, 2002, the company signed an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance (AVC) with the state's Fair Business Practices Act Administrator. The respondents willingness to enter into an AVC shall not be considered an admission of violation. Specifically, the Administrator alleged that the Company: Solicited consumers in the state of Georgia by misrepresenting via an Internet advertisement that consumers have won discounted travel services. The Company entered into the AVC in order to resolve this matter without the necessity of formal legal action. Upon breach of any of the provisions of this AVC by the Company, the Administrator reserves the right to request initiation of formal legal actions against Company concerning the subject matter of this AVC.

Neither phone number associated with the fax -- 1-866-388-7739 to order, 1-866-670-5897 to be removed from our "opt-in list" -- turns up on a reverse phone number look-up.

The fax blaster firm labels itself as "Flip Flop Market."

If you received a fax, you can file a complaint with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. If enough of us file $500 claims, we could make them think twice before (a) fax blasting and (b) falsely promoting.

Why do I say falsely promoting? Because the website special -- three of the four trips promoted on the fax -- is being sold for $3896 per family.

Much has been said of Xerox' chances of becoming the then Microsoft by passing over Steve Jobs' idea of a computer working with Windows, Icons, a Mouse and Pop-up menus(make the acronym yourself). They were also the first company to commercialize the Fax machine or telecopier as they called it in the mid 60's.

With this in mind, let's fast forward to a call I made to the big X yesterday concerning a group pension question that I had. Since I am not with the company since 1998, I was told to contact the administrator of group plans Great West LIfe. There, I was told to contact Towers-Perrin since my file had been moved to them in June 2005. One more phone call and I am now with EDS, which is managing that part of the pension plan for Towers Perrin who took it over from GWL who was managing it for Xerox!!

In order for my request to be processed, the lady, who was very cordial on the phone, finally told me to put my request in writing and to fax them a copy at the specific phone number. I was so surprised, I couldn't offer anything else but - "excuse me? Fax? I haven't used a fax in years. Have you heard of email? I can email this very easily!" The response was that it needed to be sent via regular mail or by fax. I couldn't print it, sign it, scan it and email it. They are not "set" for this. Since the lady believed I hadn't heard of faxes, she told me that I could find a fax machine in a number of shops down the street such as Kinko's or copy centers!!! I know faxes - I used to sell them for 8,000$ 20 years ago. I am still under shock that Xerox, the then dinosaur that employed me for 10 years hasn't helped their own suppliers move past a technology that was already old 10 years ago. Or does Xerox still think that this is hot technology? All I know, is that the lady, as nice as she was, never got a fax from me; I was too busy ordering the new VIC 20 computer....imagine...5 K of RAM and 20 K of ROM...is this technology? I have to tell Xerox about this.

The most preferred and clear technology or technique to communicate is personal face to face communication. Personal face to face communication results in zero distortion and the message being communicated clearly. We also have an advantage when we communicate ‘face to face’; we can understand responses from the other person’s body language. Telephone substitutes the voice part of a personal face-to-face communication, obviously not as effective as the face-to-face communication, but much more effective than other technologies being used. E-Mail is rather replacing the telephone as a cost effective technique which can be precise and clearer. More can be communicated through mail than the telephone. Companies all over the world are switching to E-Mail because it serves the purpose of getting the message across in short time, clearly, & also proving to be cost effective. Older technologies like fax and telex are mainly used to send important documents, but have not been able to make the transition. EXAMPLES/EXPERIENCES: I have a friend of mine who uses a Blackberry and it gives him access to his e-mails almost instantly. Lots of people have been using Blackberry, especially those who are always on the move and want to check their mails regularly. This is a device which has revolutionized the potential of an e-mail, now anybody can send or receive e-mails from anywhere without worrying about the laptop being charged or not. Blackberry is probably one-tenth the size of a laptop and has more accessibility than a laptop.

In this post, i shall describe some free services using which you can send and receive your faxes over the Internet for Free. However, this post shall be of interest mostly to readers outside India and primarily from US / Canada.

Over the internet we have many services which claim to provide free Fax service. However, they do bring with them a lot of strings. In this post, i am trying to categorize the service for a particular use : Sending Faxes and Receiving Faxes.

If you wish to Send Fax for Free, Faxzero.com is an interesting service. With FaxZero you can send 2 faxes daily. FaxZero only handles the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada at this time. The following are the terms for sending free faxes using FaxZero

• Free!
• Ad on the cover page
• Fax 1 document—maximum 3 pages
• Maximum 2 free faxes per day

In order to receive fax for free, visit efax.com. Using eFax , you can receive unlimited faxes and it shows up in your email as and when you receive the fax. With eFax, you'll get a local or toll-free fax number that's tied to your email.

Another interesting service you could consider for receiving faxes is FaxDigits. With FaxDigits, the faxes are sent to your email as a PDF. Also, like eFax, you can receive unlimited faxes.

But when you run out of places to visit, there's always the office to scrutinize. In boring moments, you notice how  the office could be weird and peculiar.

     For instance, we have a fax machine that can be oh so sexual. It gives out a peculiar sound. I swear I could even hear syllables being hummed and buzzed by the fax. The sound can be likened to some sort of disappointing copulation, a lover on the verge of euphoria but losing the mystical moment just as it was within reach. At first I thought it was just my very fertile mind that was bothered, or sometimes even aroused, by the darn machine; but then one day I discovered I was not alone in my fax machine opinion. I was entertaining a client,   a female teacher, when the telefax started to ring. On automatic mode, the machine gave out a fax tone after five rings. Then it began: the peculiar aah- aah-aah sound started to build in a crescendo. In each agonizing second, my face, and my client's face, flushed to an embarrassing, shiny red. 

     In my mind I started calling the damn thing the 'fucks machine.'

Quase tudo o que está relacionado com transmissões de dados passou por lá. Desde a primeira transmissão por fax (1925) até às primeiras experiências de DSL que dariam origem a um dos principais meios de transmissão de dados na Internet de hoje.
O transístor que revolucionou a electrónica, as células solares inicialmente usadas para alimentação eléctrica de pequenos aparelhos em locais remotos e que hoje se banalizam na habitação, a investigação das redes que permitiram o uso de telemóveis, a transmissão por satélite, o sistema operativo Unix e a linguagem de programação C, estes e muitos milhares de outros feitos, começaram ou passaram pelos Laboratórios Bell.
Propriedade do ex-monopólio das comunicações que foi a AT&T, os Laboratórios Bell podiam e deviam dedicar-se à investigação pura e dura, mesmo assim a lista de invenções práticas é impressionante.

Da Irlanda e Holanda até Índia e China, os laboratórios trabalham em 4 continentes, e tencionam alargar as parcerias. Daí a criação de uma cátedra em Portugal, e de um acordo para que estudantes universitários portugueses se aperfeiçoem em New Jersey. A parte académica é completada com acordos de cooperação com o Ministério das Obras Públicas e Telecomunicações. O governo e os Bell Labs vão colaborar em áreas como as redes sem fios e as redes de fibra óptica de nova geração algumas das grandes áreas de negócio da Alcatel Lucent.

Esta entrada era mas para comentar que hoy va a ser la ultima presentación de la banda en España, tocaran como ultima fecha en el Festival FAX en Ourense. Aqui va el cartel de la presentación.

All was proceding well, there was a bit of glen hansard and marketa irglova playing away, then there was the joyful bing of an e-mail to tell me that i had a fax at reception. I wondered whether to not reply, as this would have entailed them calling me about the e-mail about the fax, but decided that the exercise would be beneficial... I came back and on ITunes Mark Hollis was playing the track "Inside looking out"from his one and only album, Mark Hollis.

I am not a Mark Hollis expert, but here goes. He used to be in Talk Talk, his brother is the Eddie of Eddie and the hot rods! erm thats about as far as i go... Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden, Colour of Spring and Laughing Stock contain some of my favourite pieces of music. He released his solo album a couple of years after the demise of talk talk.  I bought it and immediately the sparse stretched melodies and instrumentation just caught something magical and unique.

I and iTunes shuffle had forgotten about this for some time and then this afternoon it came on... It is such a stunning vivid piece of work.. It shouldn't lift your spirits the way it does...Sadly i just checked up on Amazon and it is going new for £2.98!!! methinks an early christmas shop might need to be done, this album needs inflicting on others.

Anyway back to the Nokia manual ho hum.

This first tool comes from drop.io. It's a free service, so already it's incredible. What you do on drop.io is create "drops" and you can either make it public or private. There's no email required to register, just simply name your drop, upload a file, and voila - you have a drop! You have a 100MB which isn't bad, unless you want somewhere to sync huge files, in which case this isn't the place for you.

What's great is, if you make your drop public, you can have a central place for friends, family and coworkers send you files and share files at a simple, anonymous place. Not only can you upload from the site but you can send MMS from your mobile phone directly to the drop. Also, you can email photos, documents, or notes to the drop with a specialized email address - perfect for iPhone users.

The last feature, which I completely fell in love with, is Drop.io's fax service. You can send free faxes with documents from your drop to anyone in the world. Did I say it was free? Not only can you send faxes, but you can receive the as well. All you have to do is give the sender a special cover sheet to use and it automagically gets sent to your drop. The only drawback is that it takes up to 30 minutes for a fax to send so don't use this method if you need the fax immediately.

All-in-all this has served as an excellent tool for me for quick drops and note taking. Create your drop today!
