If you are one of the millions of users on the Internet, you would most likely come across a tiny (usually orange colored box) with the letters RSS written within the box. You may also see this orange square with white markings of a dot and two sloped lines of different lengths (indicating radio waves). The acronym RSS means Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. What does RSS mean to you?

RSS is a data system that delivers information to you upon your request. This delivery system provides you with information that constantly changes, keeping you up-to-date with current events of your choice. According to Wikipedia, "[a]n RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship". For example, blog postings, or news information-in audio or video format can be updated frequently in an RSS format. RSS comes to you in the form of what is referred to as an aggregator.

This aggregator contains all updates accessible in one location. RSS is like web surfing-only it is done automatically by your computer. All the information via RSS is provided to you as events occur-updated and ready for viewing or listening. "RSS feeds uses software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based or desktop-based" (Wikipedia).

The data format used to provide you with this frequent update of information is referred to as a news feed or web feed. Distributors syndicate a web feed, and by so doing, you can subscribe to the RSS.

A reader-you-with interest in my blog can subscribe and receive all new information on my pages, posts, and comments as they become available.

Summer is ending here and I couldn't be happier! Sometimes I wonder why I suffer through this brutal weather. It makes me pretty miserable. I can't cook without heating the house up unreasonably, and I don't like to go swimming. I do like to go sledding. I live in the wrong state.

I've been kinda grumpy all summer, but now that it's cooling off (it only gets into the upper 80s or low 90s lately), my temperament has been improving. I have more energy and things are starting to sound fun again! Fall's fun! Highlights of my fall calendar: Cat Power, my brother's wedding, Magnetic Fields, The Humpers reunion (!), Fun Fun Fun Fest, Charlie Parr, a one-night basic digital camera class, the Flair Symposium, a possible camping &/or hiking trip, and more. Also, the debates, the election, and either unbridled joy or the deepest pit of sorrow the morning after. And the cherry on top: two whole weeks off over the winter break during which time I'll either finally get my shit together or go totally insane. Yay!

Basicamente, existem dois tipos de leitores RSS: os offline, que devem ser instalados para rodar, ou os onlines, que podem ser acessados direto da rede. O primeiro caso é mais indicado para quem sempre vai ler os RSS em um mesmo computador. Já os offlines são preferidos por aqueles que usam diferentes PCs (no trabalho, em casa, na faculdade) e em vários locais diferentes, mas sempre com acesso à internet. As versões mais atuais de navegadores como Internet Explorer e Mozilla Firefox também contam um agregador rápido de notícias que podem ser visualizados na barra de ferramenta de cada um.

Braço da Web 2.0

O especialista em tecnologia da informação e internet Eduardo Favaretto explica que, depois do boom da ascensão da internet que aconteceu a partir do ano 2000, a rede passa agora por um novo momento (Web 2.0) e isso fez com que os produtores de conteúdos se multiplicassem pelo espaço virtual. “Antes a web era vista como uma via de mão única, onde a informação era passada de um site para o usuário. Agora o internauta também pode produzir conteúdos como áudios, blogs e vídeos e compartilhá-los com outras pessoas”, conta. Entusiasta da tecnologia, Favaretto explica que, assim como o Outlook serve para reunir os e-mails do usuário, o leitor de RSS atua como uma ferramentaà parte que serve para congregar as informações mais relevantes de cada pessoa numa espécie de programação exclusiva. “Eu leio diariamente cerca de 100 fontes de notícias e tenho certeza absoluta que só consigo fazer isso por ter um agregador de notícias no meu computador”, conta.

Para saber se a página que você visita com freqüência conta com esse tipo de serviço, basta procurar pelo ícone que identifica a existência do recurso em cada website: ele pode ser representado por um pequeno quadrado laranja com três riscos ou com a sigla do serviço. Desde a invenção do RSS apareceram outros formatos e maneiras de acessar o conteúdo de um site, como o RSS 2.0 e o Atom. No entanto, no que diz respeito ao usuário final, eles fazem basicamente a mesma coisa e praticamente todos aceitam mais de um formato. Além de distribuir textos, o RSS também entrega fotos, podcast, vídeos e até novos posts de blogs. O NetVibes, um dos mais populares sites que surgiram com a consolidação da chamada web 2.0, permite que o usuário crie uma página própria (tal qual um website), posicionando os canais de notícias de acordo com sua preferência ou mesmo adotando sistemas de abas para melhor navegação. O programa também permite sincronização com posts de blogs e até mesmo com o Flickr. Dá para acompanhar as variações das ações na bolsa de valores, as cotações de diferentes moedas, a previsão do clima em qualquer parte do planeta, entre outras diversas informações dos mais variados produtores de conteúdo. Outro ponto bem interessante do aplicativo é que ele conta com o Meebo, um serviço que reúne vários comunicadores instantâneos como MSN, Yahoo! Messenger, AIM, Google Talk e ICQ num só programa e permite que você os acesse de qualquer lugar, sem a necessidade de instalá-los. O serviço é uma tendência crescente no espaço virtual e grandes nomes relacionados ao mundo das comunicações como Reuters, The Washington Post, Economist, Japan Times, entre outros já aderiram ao sistema. Até o famoso canal de notícias norte-americano, CNN, alimenta de hora em hora um podcast com os principais fatos dos últimos 60 minutos.

After you install the application, you can add your feeds manually by entering in the feed URL, or you can have Apprise fetch the feed URL for you by entering in the website URL.  You can also import/export feeds in OPML format.  You can add your Twitter and AIM credentials so that you can share articles with friends with a couple of clicks.  If you want to share a story over Twitter, just click the Twitter icon, add a short tweet to go along with the link, and click on "submit".  To send an article to a friend via AIM, just click on the IM icon, select an available buddy from the list, or enter in a screen name.

Another feature that I really like is that you can sort through stories based on a specific author or topic.  This is really useful if a blog you read has multiple authors and posts on many different topics - Now you can just pick who and what you read about.  You can also do real time searches within all articles.  To learn more, watch the screencast below:

Se ancora non sapete cos'è un Feed, e cos'è un Feed Reader, vi siete persi l'articolo precedente che ne parlava!!! :D

Liferea si può installare da Synaptic, e presenta una schermata molto pratica e funzionale.

Sulla sinistra sono presenti i blog/siti a cui siete iscritti, possono essere divisi anche in cartelle, in alto a destra ci sono gli articoli di quel blog, in basso a destra l'articolo che avete selezionato.

Dopo il primo avvio saranno presenti dei Siti pre-impostati. Se non capite l'inglese potete cancellarli tutti :D . Per iscriversi ad un sito (come ho spiegato prima) basta cliccare su questo simbolo presente nel sito di interesse. A questo punto Firefox vi chiede con quale Feed Reader vi volete iscrivere, questa volta diremo Liferea. Ecco come: Quando appare questa schermata

Anziché scegliere "Segnalibri Live" scegliamo "Scegli un'applicazione...", quindi apparirà una cartella del nostro computer. Bisogna andare in File System -> usr -> bin . In questa cartella dobbiamo trovare e selezionare il file "liferea-add-feed". Questa operazioni va fatta solo la prima volta, le successive liferea apparirà già nel menu a tendina di Firefox. A questo punto bisogna cliccare su "Abbonati adesso" (ovviamente si intende solo di iscriversi a quel sito...non si paga mica niente!!! :D ).

Come nel post precedente, se vi si presenta una pagina che vi chiede quale “Feed Reader” usate:

Bisogna cliccare su “ View Feed XML“.

Una volta che ci siamo iscritti ad un sito, questo dovrebbe apparire nella colonna di sinistra e dovremmo ricevere le notizie arretrate... :D . Facendo tasto destro sul sito e poi proprietà otteniamo la seguente finestra:

col nome del notiziario, e con l'intervallo di aggiornamento.

Diamo un occhio alle Preferenze (tasto in alto a destra) di Liferea:

Nella scheda notiziari possiamo scegliere quanti elementi salvare per ogni notiziario (sito/blog), ogni quanto controllare gli aggiornamenti dei siti, e quali notiziari aggiornare.

Nella scheda Browser

Potete scegliere se visualizzare gli articoli in Liferea, oppure nel Browser (ad Esempio Firefox).

Nella scheda Interfaccia Grafica

Potete scegliere se volete che Liferea vi avvisi quando escono nuovi articoli, e come vi avvisi, se volete che si chiuda o resti aperta in attesa di nuovi articoli...

Bè...Penso che questo sia tutto...andate e iscrivetevi!!! :D

Once installed, the Snackr user interface is nothing more than a plus sign where you add feeds; an icon for options including manually adding and removing feeds and changing feed preferences such as the ticker speed and placement; an icon to expand or collapse your ticker, and an X to quit the app. Tiny, compact, virtually unobtrusive.

The great thing about this tool is that I am getting my RSS feeds in a way that feels much more consumable to me. I can dive in at any time and read up on the latest articles and posts to keep me on top of my game as a Web worker.

The ticker, however, while placed "out of the way" is not so unobtrusive.

No matter where I place the Snackr ticker and no matter how slowly I set it, the darn thing just keeps going and going and going and going. For me, it becomes distracting as my eyes jump to the moving titles and images.

Maybe over time, I'll get used to it. But I find myself collapsing it after a minute because it is subliminally sending my brain into a frenzy. The ticker is probably much less pushy on a larger monitor. On my MacBook, the ticker is hugging the bottom of my browser window so it is hard to not notice.

Also, I'd really like a Pause button so I can have a dozen article and post titles across the bottom of my screen for a while that I can pick through at my leisure instead of feeling like I'm missing something.

Set up is easy (thank goodness).

Go to your feed reader and look for an export feature to make an OPML file. I use Google Reader so I clicked on "Settings," then "Import/Export," and finally "Export your subscriptions as an OPML file." The file was created very quickly.

Then Click on the tiny Options icon, click Import, and voila!

So how does Snackr compare to Newsfire, the OS X little feed reader app that Mike Gunderloy wrote about in March? Well, when I went to test out Newsfire, I couldn't figure out how to import the OPML file that I had exported from Google Reader. Whatever Google Reader spit out was not compatible with Newsfire, so I couldn't do a comparison.

I like my apps to work with minimal struggle on my part so despite the lack of a pause button on Snackr, I am actually enjoying it in little, tiny bites.

(P.S. Just got a tweet from the Snackr folks: "Planning to add some less-distracting animation options, like fading in new items instead of the continuous scroll.")

Simply put, RSS (Really Simple Syndication)  is a family of web feed formats used for publishing frequently updated content over the internet such as blog posts, news headlines etc. in a standardized format. RSS feed contains a summary of the content or the full text. Along with that RSS feeds can contain media files such as images, video and even ad banners embedded in them.

The main benefit of RSS is aggregation of content form many different sources in one place. RSS feeds can be read using RSS Readers. RSS readers can be web based or desktop based. A good example of web based RSS reader is Google Reader. Even though there are many web based ones, I liked Google Reader. You can try Snarfer (395.81K to Download) if you want a desktop based RSS reader.

So how do we put it to use? Say you came across an interesting website or a blog and you want to see all the new updates regularly. Earlier the only option was to check the website regularly for updates. Now you can conveniently subscribe to the RSS feeds of that website and the RSS reader takes care of informing you about the new updates. The reader regularly checks for the feeds and synchronizes with the content already present in it. Just search for the RSS icon and click on it. Your browser opens a new page; just copy the web address (URL) and add it in your RSS reader. In Snarfer you can add a new feed form the File menu. In google Reader you can add a new feed by clicking ‘Add subscription’ on the left side pan.

Once you have successfully added the feed, you start receiving all the updates directly to your RSS reader.  Don’t you think it’s far easier than keep checking different web sites….? So what’s stopping you….? Go harness the benefits of RSS feeds…

Alltop categorizes blogs and then lays them out in columns, showing the most recent five post titles. Hover over a title and you get a summary or a chunk of the actual post. You can browse the entire page without a single new page load, but if you want to see the actual blog, click on a title and the page opens in a new tab. Scanning horizontally, or vertically, or randomly is comfortable and relaxing. Savanna preference, perhaps?

I'll still keep my feed readers (Google Reader vs. Feed Demon, at the moment) for the blogs that Alltop doesn't cover. But I think this kind of presentation is a very big idea, and I won't be surprised to see better page layout options in the other feed readers soon. I'm not downplaying Alltop's selection skills, it's just that their information design is so good and so simple.

Snackr pulls random items from your RSS Feed and streams them along your desktop in a ticker-like fashion. You can import your feeds or add them manually and you can read stories easily by clicking on them. It's pretty much never ending so if you're easily distracted, you may find yourself staring at Snackr instead of actually getting any work done. You can edit the settings of the ticker to have it sit on any side of your screen and you can easily minimize it if it's getting in your way.

MuxMaster is an awesome compliment to Muxtapes, the service that allows you to make cool MP3 mixtapes to share with your friends. MuxMaster automatically provides you with 10 Muxtapes that you can browse through to discover new music. If you don't like those, then you can select another random 10. If you know the name of a Muxtape you can enter it in and MuxMaster will load that along with other relevant Muxtapes.

Fotobooth is a fun application that allows you to instantly take photos with your webcam and add effects to them. Even better, fotobooth works with Flickr so you can instantly upload all of the photos you take to your Flickr account. Every time you snap a photo, it's dropped onto the application and will stay there until you delete it.
