YETI: The mighty Himalayan man, is a myth now. Tibet as a free nation and the existence of Tibetans as the rightful people of Tibet is being made into a myth by the Chinese government.

YETI is a symbol of hope for all Tibetans, praying to become the Mighty Himalayan Spiritual Nation once again. It’s the story of Tibetans born in India, living a dream of going back to their free country one day. YETI is a non-profit, collaborative film project that will be released online on 8th august 2008 when the Olympic Games start in Beijing. The objective of this film project is to reach student communities worldwide and to gather support for the peaceful struggle of the Tibetan people in the age of weapons and wars. It will also attempt to provide the viewer with an understanding of the Tibetan Uprising Movement at this critical point in Tibetan history.

Can Tibetans get their country back from Communist China by using flags and prayers against their modern weapons?

It’s about time somebody goes after these killers! How can the world community just sit aroun

It's about time somebody goes after these killers! How can the world community just sit around and watch the others continue their killing, torture, cultural genocide of people in the name of their so called progress. Progress isn't about killing and genocide. Progress is about respecting every one and every thing, but learning as you move on with every individual having freedom and doing no harm.

The International People need to press for the capture of more criminals like these.

On Monday, the International Criminal Court indicted Sudan's President Omar Al Bashir for genocide. He is charged with killing hundreds of thousands of people in Sudan and its Darfur region, and corralling the surviving women and girls into terrifying camps where they are being quietly and systematically raped until their peoples are destroyed.

In response, Al Bashir's regime is threatening more terror against Darfurians and the UN, and appealing to powerful international friends who buy oil from and sell weapons to Sudan to give him protection. Al Bashir knows that he will be caught only if other governments, especially Arab and African governments, agree to help the International Criminal Court (for example by arresting him when he travels abroad).

Targeting Al Bashir is our best hope to end the terror of Darfur's rape camps, and take a major step forward for international justice. Many of Sudan's neighbours are Muslim countries where rape is a scandalous crime – and Al Bashir's henchmen have killed and raped thousands of Muslim women. To raise awareness of this, Avaaz is launching a large regional ad campaign, urging leaders to help the ICC. Our ads will run in just a few days, and a full page ad in an Egyptian newspaper is just 3000Euros($5000), so we need just 50,000 Euros ($75,000) to get our message across. Click below to help:

Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics.

Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.

A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled.

Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries".

One is routinely asked, why are you heading off to yet another Free Tibet demo? A few protesters pitched against the mighty People's Republic of China, come on, get real, do something productive, like, upgrade your iPod. Aside from the fact that shouting China Out Of Tibet with your friends always reminds those passing by that Tibet is in chains, there are plenty of reasons to keep up the heat as the Summer Games approach.

The protests have already done the world a favor by exposing the CCP for what it is. The militarization that was summoned to "protect" the torch was met with resistance, and was thwarted. Not one demonstrator was critically harmed in the path of the Blood Torch, a testament to the power of a non-violent people's movement. Now we're approaching the main event, where China is going to test-run state-of-the-art surveillance and suppression techniques for the world's biggest sporting event. If the PSB soars, God help us all. If they sputter, raise your flag and have a drink.

But the most compelling purpose for heading towards the Chinese Consulate with a Tibetan flag is to speak for people who are in jails, torture cells and graves, who would join you if they could. Just ask Palden Gyatso.

Palden has come to New York City with a new documentary about his life, "Fire Under the Snow". It tells of his childhood in old Tibet, his monastic education, and how he was arrested by PLA soldiers in 1959, soon after Dalai Lama took flight to India. His crimes were only that he refused to denounce his Buddhist teacher or state that Tibet belonged to China. He was savagely beaten, he saw his friends die in torment, for decades he was given no more than two cold buns each day for his food. He had to pray in secret; if anyone was caught intoning prayers, they were severely punished. For two years his hands and legs were shackled with iron bars, in the years that followed he had electric cattle prods shoved into his mouth and stomach.

In 1992 Palden was released and escaped to India, smuggling a cache of electric cattle prods, knives and shackles used upon Tibetan prisoners. I met Palden in 1994, when he showed the torture instruments to the United States Congress. For decades many had struggled to bring information about conditions in Tibet under Chinese rule to the world when propaganda was accepted as fact. Palden came as a gift; a survivor of 33 years of enslavement, a living witness to Communist China's cruel and vast gulag, to speak for the dead.

As he sits in my Manhattan home, Palden paints exquisite calligraphy of ancient Tibetan scripts. He studies history books, with a keen interest in the Mao and the Communist victory in China. He explores the New York streets with grace and delight, everywhere he makes friends, incites conversations. He listens to Tibetan broadcasts for news of his homeland, as the radio transmits desperate voices describing arrests, beatings, terror and despair. At the daily vigil before the Chinese Consulate, Palden joins local activists praying not just for Tibet, but also for those who died in China and Burma, in the earthquake and cyclone. Last month Palden asked a friend to take him to Ground Zero, to pray for those who perished on 9/11, and those now dying in Iraq.

The Tibet movement has no army, no wealth, pitted against the colossal PRC, but in the Rangzen Spring of 2008, the Tibetans rose up against the People's Liberation Army and the people of the world stood with them. As the late great Abe Rosenthal wrote in his 1995 essay, "You are Palden Gyatso";

"So why do some members of Congress hold hearings, Americans around the country raise money for Tibetan freedom, and why is it so useful to listen to a monk with a bent, twisted back, scars on his body and startling clarity in his eyes? The reason is that those who do what is within their talent, influence and means for Tibet become part of a movement for the abolition of slavery. Sooner or later abolition movements triumph; it is written."

Last week's major stories were a K2 summit push and Vlado Plulík's disappearance on Broad Peak. Independence Day was all about Free Speech and Democracy.

K2 update After fixing the route to camp 3 and then some, Wilco van Rooijen’s team started a summit push on K2’s Cesen route - with no C4 established, and reportedly other teams in BC unwilling to lend a helping hand, citing bad weather. The Dutch, who have already spent about a month on K2, however wanted to grab the chance of a short weather break forecasted for this weekend. A gas accident pulled team 1 from the peak and by Friday only 5 climbers from team 2 remained high up on the slope (except for a brief visit by a Serbian climber). By Sunday, after placing a cache near C4, exhaustion forced also team two back to BC .

On Nanga Parbat the Iranian team split in two, climbing the peak alone, with the fixed ropes buried by deep snow. After reaching camp 3, the climbers retreated to BC Sunday, meeting there with Kazem's K2 mate from 2007; Chris Warner - now leading an American expedition on Nanga Parbat.

After summiting Nanga Parbat Italians Daniele Nardi and Mario Panzeri are attempting Broad Peak next.

Another Broad Peak summit seems to have been achieved by a French team this weekend. Check in Monday for details. Babanov's team returned to BC from 7100 meters on July 5, ready for the summit push next.

Dodo's climbing partner Vlado Plulík missing on Broad Peak Dodo and Vlado split up at around 8000 meters on Broad Peak; after which Vlado went missing - possibly in a fall. Last weekend, Russian Valery Babanov climbed in stormy weather all the way to 2 looking for the mountaineer, 4-5 more climbers were searching around C1 while Dodo reported that he looked below. Dodo summited Broad Peak on Thursday June 26, and noticed that Vlado was missing on Friday. According to Nick Rice, he attended a birthday party in K2's BC on Saturday and another dinner on Sunday after walking back to Broad Peak's BC to ask around about Vlado.

Vlado's accident reminded of Marek Hudak's fate; Dodo's climbing mate who vanished - possibly in a fall - on Shisha Pangma in 2007. That situation was descibed in ExplorersWeb "Best-of-2007"awards, granted to Kopold that year. ExplorersWeb has requested and interview with Dodo about the latest accident.

Philip Ling's tale: A Sherpa and a Gentleman Last year, Australian Philip Ling wrote a debrief from the day he almost reached Lhotse's summit without O2, and witnessed Sherpani Pemba Doma fall to her death. Philip also shared his memories from Pumori, the bitter-sweet daughter of Everest; another fatal climbing drama with a few lessons to learn. Last week Philip was back, with a third tale from his climbing life.

Gasherbrums: teams moving up Field Touring Alpine, Romanians Alex and Pawel, and Portuguese Daniela Teixeira were just some of the climbers heading up the Gasherbrums for acclimatization last week.

Nepalese trekking agencies reported that China will open for climbing, however no official confirmation has yet been issued. One letter from CTMA reportedly said that Chinese peaks will reopen for climbing this fall under certain conditions, such as screening of climbers and that outfitters guarantee their clients and staff will follow "the laws and regulations of the Peoples Republic of China."

Once every four years, the nations of the world gather together in one place in a showcase of sport

Once every four years, the nations of the world gather together in one place in a showcase of sportmanship and fair play (not to mention a competition for commercial endorsements and the coveted Wheaties Box) in the seminal international sporting event, The Olympic Games. In the ideal world, indeed in the mind of the founder modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the Olympics are a gathering of the world's people to showcase their talent and epitomizes human unity as countries set aside our differences to compete in sports. Of course, we all know this is a crock of shit since the games have been taken over by the corporations who have turned them into one big marketing event, the modern day equivalent of the Roman bread and circuses. While supposedly an International event, the games always take on the flavor of the host country. If you don't believe me, just watch some re-runs of the Salt Lake City Winter Games, when post-911 fever ran high and it was all about the USA, complete with the 911 battle flag and the famous singing cop. What was once a sporting event has been politicized and has increasingly become so. in 1972, members of the Palestinian Black September group took Israeli athletes hostages in the Olympic Village in Munich, and that ended in a fiasco when the hostages and some of their captors were killed in a botched attempt to rescue them at the airport. Several nations boycotted the Montreal games because a Rugby Team toured South Africa, then under the heavy thumb of Apartheid. A political incident on a smaller scale occurred at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Two American track-and-field athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, performed the Black Power salute on the victory stand of the 200-meter track and field race. Then there were the Berlin Games of 1936 which were used as a propaganda tool for Nazi Germany.

And now the games are being hosted this year by the People's Republic of China. While my country does not have a human rights record to write home about these days, China has consistently neglected the values of the Olympics and it would be an insult to host the games in a place that subjugates people to harsh marginalization and supports ethnic cleansing in other countries. The decades of marginalized oppression of ethnic Tibetans at the hands or ethnic Chinese, the refusal to grant Tibet sovereignty and end the occupation of a land that does not belong to them disqualifies China from being the host to anything that is symbolic of worldwide peace and unity. The Olympic Flame that will burn brightly this summer in Beijing will represent to many the hegemonic rule of China over the Tibetan people. Proponents of a free Tibet are calling for a full-scale boycott of the 2008 Olympics. They believe this will send a strong message to China and push them into legitimizing the in-exile Tibetan government and its leader, the Dalai Lama. After so many years of political subservience, the Tibetan people deserve global support in ensuring freedom from tyranny. These people suffer from severe restrictions, mass censorship and the exile of their beloved leader. China has basically imposed martial law in Lhase, Tibet's capital, and has imprisoned or detained more than 2,300 peaceful protesters with the excuse that they are protecting normalcy and stability. There's also the major concern of China's role in the Sudanese economy. China has strong ties to the Sudan government and for that it should also be recognized that it's helping to fund genocide in Darfur.
China is only looking out for its economic interests - not human rights.
China has consistently blocked efforts from the United Nations to class Sudan's actions as genocide and has even blocked sending peacekeeping forces. Sudan's only major export is oil, and China imports 80 percent of that oil, stimulating the Sudanese government with $2 billion each year.
There is also all the infrastructural investment China is making in Sudan in terms of pipelines, roads and airfields. China also supplies Sudan with military arms and technology. So China is not a blind supporter, but an accomplice in the Bashir regime's genocide in Darfur. Boycotting this sporting event is a way pressure China to release its vice grip on Tibet and stop its direct funding of a genocide of people in Darfur.
The Olympics are not only a series of sporting events but a symbol of multiculturalism and global unity. How can these things exist in a nation that is oppressing an entire people while it funds ethnic cleansing in another country? It can't and it shouldn't but it is. So there is only one option left. Boycott the Olympics. Senator Hillary Clinton has spoken out and urged President Bush to Boycott the opening ceremonies. I think we should go a step further and this will surely not be a popular opinion - Boycott the Olympic Games. Do not send our contigient over there. Keep the atheletes home. There is a historic precedent for this. When the Soviet military forces entered into Afghanistan in 1979, President Jimmy Carter called for a boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. We did not send a team to the 1980 Moscow games. The Soviet Union repaid the favor and did not attend the Los Angeles games of 1984. I doubt that George Bush will have the stones to do this, so the next best thing is to tune out. Don't watch NBC's coverage of the games. During those weeks, boycott McDonalds, Johnson & Johnson, GE, Coca Cola , major sponsors of those games. I'm sure you can stand a few weeks away from Bob Costas anyway. It's time to send a message that human rights trumps gold medals and the thrill of victory and agony of defeat. Any victories at the games will ring hollow when they are won on the soil of a nation that participates in human rights violations and directly funds genocide in Darfur. Perhaps this should also serve as a wake-up call to the International Olympic Committee that the time has come for a permanent, neutral host such as Switzerland be selected to host the games. It would take the politics away, the Olympics might actually become a sporting event again and the threats of boycotts would diminish. Until then, this writer along with many others is tuning out. And not buying products from companies who advertise during the Olympics. I'm not alone in this.
Many athletes would lose their opportunity to compete, but think of the people who don't even have the freedom to leave their homes or articulate their political views. Also, look at the Darfur conflict and tell me if anyone would think that was worth a gold medal in an event.

Tibetan exiles on Sunday celebrated the 73rd birthday of their revered leader His Holiness the 14th

Tibetan exiles on Sunday celebrated the 73rd birthday of their revered leader His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, but with no customary song and dance performances.

Hundreds of Tibetans and visiting tourists packed the Tsuglag-khang (Main Tibetan Temple) courtyard to join the official function, attended by top officials of the Tibetan government-in-Exile, including Kalon Tripa (Prime Minister) Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche, Chairman of the Tibetan Parliament Mr Karma Choephel and other senior officials of the Central Tibetan Administration.

The Dalai Lama’s birthday celebration, which is otherwise a joyous moment for Tibetans, was kept moderate this year due to sad and worsening situation inside Tibet since the March unrest. Tibetan people here honoured their leader’s birthday by offering prayers and planting trees for his long life and continued wellbeing.

Some 200 people from the Trans Himalayan region of India bordering Tibet, including Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Uttranchal, Utrakhand, Lahaul Spiti, Kinour, Kullu, Manali, and Ladhak, also joined the celebration this morning. The members were led by prominent social and political leaders of the communities. According to a press statement by the Trans Himalayan Parliamentary forum, the members on Saturday had a private audience with the Dalai Lama to wish him “long life and to express solidarity with Holiness’ peaceful struggle for the Tibetan cause”. They also organized a candle light peace march for Tibet later in the evening to convey their continued support for the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom.

TAIPEI, Taiwan: Tibetan and Taiwanese activists carried a "freedom torch" to the summit of Taiwan's tallest mountain Sunday as part of a five-month, 50-city relay calling for greater self-rule for China-controlled Tibet, sponsors said.

The 21-member team took the torch to the peak of 13,035-foot (3,950-meter) Mount Yu and planted a Tibetan flag there, they said.

"From the summit of Mount Yu, they looked homeward at the Himalayas, praying for the early termination of their exile so they could return home," said the Taiwan for Tibet Association, a local group backing the Tibetans.

Several of the torch carriers fled their Himalayan homeland and live in exile in other countries.

The Tibetan torch relay, which began in Greece in March, was designed to contrast with the torch relay for the Olympic Games, which open in Beijing on Aug. 8.

It is also meant to highlight Tibetans' will to strengthen their autonomy and denounce Beijing for its crackdown on demonstrations in Tibet in March, said Thupten Chophed, an official of the Taiwan-Tibet Interchange Association.

Sunday is the 73rd birthday of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, making the Taiwan leg of the relay more significant, he said.

The relay was launched in Greece on March 10 and is scheduled to finish Aug. 7 at Dharmsala, India, base of the Dalai Lama's government in exile.

China has governed Tibet since Communist troops marched into the Himalayan region in the 1950s. The Dalai Lama, who fled to India during a failed uprising in 1959, has said he wants some form of autonomy that would allow Tibetans to freely practice their culture, language and religion.

Taiwan has criticized Beijing for what it says was China's heavy-handed response to Tibetan demonstrations in March. China claims the self-ruled island of Taiwan is part of its territory, although the sides split in 1949 during a civil war.

As the Beijing Olympics and after seeing nationalistic protest I have notice just how stupid, danger

As the Beijing Olympics and after seeing nationalistic protest I have notice just how stupid, dangerous and evil Nationalism can become. When people get emotional (which what Nationalism is) people can do things that they normally wouldn't do like start riots, genocide, hatred, and other violent things. There is no problem with loving ones country for example: I love America and I love Texas but I will not be blinded by nationalism and I won't be spoon fed nonsense from the media.

In China and in other parts of the world (Including the US) people are very blinded and don't see their countries faults thats the problem. I will take for example in China many people there are believing what the Government media puts out. That way they never question, sure there are a few domestic issues people openly disagree with , but if the Government really let them know what is going on would the Chinese people stand for it? So now China is opening up which is opening up all new channels of information for the Chinese people so how does The government counter the information? Through nationalism and propaganda.

Lets take the United States for example the worlds Superpower. Do we remeber how people were blinded by nationalism and propaganda that led us in to this war(Iraq)? Also, its nationalism in this country that is messing us up. You have a lot of complacency and some people refusing to look at there country critically and its not just in the United States in many other parts of the world. It is nationalism that is keeping humans from progressing.

States are violent institution's and thats what people need to realize. Usually when people that are heavily nationalistic and are confronted with the facts you get out burst of hatred towards one another. Thats what nationalism does it shuts down all logical thought process and ruins decades if not centuries of progress.

Thats all for today.

Peace.

-Joshua.

E' neutrale.

Liberalizzo l'isola.

E ci piazzo qualche pagoda qua e là.

Devo diventare ricco. Ricchissimo.
