This weekend at the Television Critics Association press tour, Friday Night Lights showrunner Jason Katims opened up about the show's upcoming third season, which will debut on DirecTV's subscription 101 Network on Oct. 1, before being rebroadcast on NBC in early February 2009.

It seems DirecTV plans to broadcast something called Friday Night Lights Live, a weekly "postgame" show that will follow new episodes of Friday Night Lights. The 30-minute show will allow fans to call in and talk live with cast members, executives, and producers from the series.

When the new, 13-episode season begins, eight months will have passed since the finale, and we'll be back at the start of a new school year. And just like in real life, people on FNL will graduate and move on: last year's seniors Smash Williams and Jason Street will be leaving after a four-episode arc tying up their characters. And according to Katims, Tim Riggins, Matt Saracen, Tyra Colette and Lyla Garity will all be starting their senior year at Dillon High this fall, and will also be staring down the barrel of their own impending graduations.

EW's Michael Ausiello has some pretty extensive spoilers for those who want to know exactly what's in store for the Dillon Panthers in the upcoming season.

We here at TV Bacon have some issues with the Emmy nominations. This is...not unusual. We remember with something less than glee 2002, when the Academy saw fit to honor Ray Romano for acting. Still, nominees tend to be bifurcated between glorious and ghastly--after all, 2002 was the same year they recognized John Spencer. Below we outline the most exciting moments and the most egregious omissions of the 2008 nominations.

The Horror! The Horror!

Maybe They Think Masturbation Means Chewing Your Food: The exclusion of Pushing Daisies from the Best Comedy Series lineup is nigh unforgivable. Granted, we're not convinced this show belongs among comedy company either, but voters had no trouble nominating it for 12 other awards as a comedy. So, having some of the best writing, directing, actors, music, costumes, production design, editing, and hair and makeup means you aren't as good as Entourage. Nice. Also, where is the cinematography nod?

Game's The Same--Just Got More Fierce: The Wire got as many nominations as According to Jim. One of the greatest achievements in American television history ends with two total Emmy nominations. Two. Total. Across five stellar seasons. So...convince us the Emmys mean anything.

Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton Get Sacked: Yes, only five people watch Friday Night Lights. Yes, even people who don't watch the show heard the bad buzz surrounding this season's ludicrous murder plot. Chandler and Britton still turned in some of the most subtle, detailed, wrenching performances on TV. Thank goodness Boston Legal was there to provide James Spader's fantasia courtroom grandstanding and Candice Bergen's ninth nomination instead.

Bear McCreary Must Be in A Galaxy Far, Far Away: We love Battlestar Galactica, but even we'll acknoweldge that the episodes that fell within the eligibility period were perhaps not the strongest the show has ever put out (we'd hold out more hope that they might be recognized next year as they sign off, but...The Wire). Maybe we should celebrate that a show on the Sci Fi Channel about spaceships gets any nominations at all, let alone six, let alone one in a major category (Drama Writing). Even though it's a travesty that Mary McDonnell goes unnominated while the likes of Mariska Hargitay get in again, episodes focusing on her character fell outside of the eligibiity period. But no matter how hard we try, we can't understand how Bear McCreary's epic, innovative work scoring this show can go unrecognized. We threatened previously to unleash Katherine Heigel if this happened, so batten down the hatches and bar the door against Katie.

Thank Goodness Things Have Changed Since the 60s: Three acting nominations for Mad Men, and they're all for men, in spite of the complex, beautifully acted female characters on the show. It's not like television is overflowing with outstanding roles for women, leaving no room for the likes of Elisabeth Moss, January Jones, and Christina Hendricks.

Evacuate the Children!: Classical Baby: The Poetry Show. Hannah Montana. High School Musical 2. Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: The Untouchable Kids of India. The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Even with a couple of classy entries, this might be the Emmy category with the lowest batting average. We weep for the future.

Lest We Forget: So much for the greatest generation. Ken Burns' epic, moving, historic documentary on World War II received nominations for writing, directing, sound, and editing, but is nowhere to be found in nonfiction series or special. Inside the Actors Studio, which was nominated, interviewed Charlie Sheen last year. Well, he is an Emmy nominee. As is his personal hairstylist.

Even A Stopped Clock Is Right Twice A Day: Kudos and Huzzahs

And This Award You Just Got? It's A Cookie: 17.5 nominations (including one for Kenneth's the Page's webpage) for 30 Rock...and they probably deserved more. Where's the recognition for costume design for Will Arnett's super-short robe? Shine a spotlight on Tina Fey and turn a wind machine on her--she might be on stage a lot come Emmy night.

Better Award Winning through Chemistry: Bryan Cranston was robbed during his time on Malcolm in the Middle, never winning for his warm, rubbery Hal. Here's hoping that his performance as a terminally ill teacher who becomes an quietly angry meth dealer garners him the Emmy he so deserves. Don't mess with him, voters--he can melt you in a bathtub.

Perhaps This Will Make Him Feel Warm and Safe and Loved: With a loaded Lead Comedy Actor category, we worried that Lee Pace's mild, sad, lovestruck piemaker would be overlooked. Finding his name on the list was better than than a cup-pie with urban honey baked into the crust.

He Knew Which Palms to Grease: It wasn't for his role as The Wire's corrupt ex-mayor, but Glynn Turman's nomination for In Treatment is a huge--and most welcome--surprise in a category that often recognizes movie stars regardless of the size or quality of the role they play. Frankly, we thought he'd lose out to Robin Williams. Now we just want to see Turman beat him.

No More Kings--Just A Bunch of Emmy Nominees: John Adams was uneven as all get-out, but the wide range of supporting actors breathing life into the architects of a new country took our breath away. From the always-brilliant Tom Wilkinson as an earthy Ben Franklin to a surprising David Morse as George Washington to Laura Linney as the backbone helping to hold a country together, the characters surrounding Adams outstrip the second president.

Because We Know Patty: FX's bold, beautifully shot Damages seemed to suffer from all the things that usually keep shows from being recognized by the Emmys. First, it's really good. Second, it's on basic cable--HBO's award-grubbing budget is probably bigger than FX's total budget. The intricate mystery doesn't lend itself to the Emmy screening process. And yet, quality wins out for a change. Let's hope the same holds true for the final victors.

Up at Blogcritics:

It was with anticipation and dread that I scanned the Emmy nominee list yesterday morning. The top 10 finalists named earlier this month gave some hope: Would Kyle Chandler be nominated for his excellent work on Friday Night Lights? Would someone from Battlestar Galactica (in this case, Mary McDonnell for her alternately frustrating and sympathetic President Roslin) finally be nominated for an Emmy?

No, and no.

Still, some very welcome news accompanied the fist-shaking omissions and the head-scratching return of nominees who prompt critics to question whether people are nominated for merit or name recognition. My favorite happy surprises:

1. Pushing Daisies! Its first season was cut short thanks to the writers’ strike, but this series was a highlight of the TV year. It’s one of those shows that places one foot in comedy and one in drama, making it difficult to define. Perhaps that’s why it didn’t make the cut for Best Comedy (while Two and a Half Men did). One could call the voters insane, except that Lee Pace and Kristen Chenoweth received nominations for Lead Actor and Supporting Actress, on top of art, makeup, writing, directing, and other nods.

2. Zeljko Ivanek! As Ted Danson’s conflicted lawyer overwhelmed by personal and professional turmoil in Damages, Ivanek was my top pick in this category. I am thrilled to see he managed a Supporting Actor nomination alongside Danson, who was also great, and I hope he somehow manages a win. And speaking of Damages — bleak, dark, violent Damages — cheers to its Best Drama nod and to Glenn Close for Lead Actress.

3. Lost’s return. A hearty “yes!” to its Best Drama nomination for a strong season four, and to Michael Emerson for another good year as despicable, manipulative, occasionally sympathetic Benjamin Linus.

I can’t expect every Emmy nominee to reflect my personal opinions about who is most deserving in each category (particularly considering that I only watch so many TV shows, having never seen most that come from HBO and Showtime, or a full episode of some critic favorites like Mad Men). But I can appreciate the few times our opinions align, and root for those who do make it, whether or not they win.

And in my heart, Boston Legal is nominated in the comedy category (it seems funny to me in the occasional scene I catch). James Spader, William Shatner, and the show itself, if worthy, get the slots currently taken up by, say, Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, and Two and a Half Men. Spader’s Lead Actor in a Drama slot goes to Kyle Chandler, and Matthew Fox gets shoehorned into that group somehow too. The open Best Drama place goes to Battlestar Galactica, with the open Supporting Actor spot going to pretty much any Battlestar Galactica actor, even if they are leads (because, hey, it works for Jon Cryer in the comedy category). Perhaps Jamie Bamber, Michael Hogan, Edward James Olmos or James Callis? Just some starter suggestions; maybe Emmy will listen in time for next year.

And in the meantime, to which nominations do you give your hearty thumbs-up?

Buried in yesterday's Primetime Emmy nominations was the growing acknowledgment by oldteevee that maybe, just maybe, this TV-on-the-Internet thing's here to stay. Using the categorization "Special Class Program" (which lumps online video in with live opera broadcasts and awards shows), the shorts lucky enough to be recognized by the Academy are studio-produced tie-ins with network or cable series; still, it's some sort of progress. Here are the web-relevant categories -- and the nominees:

As a Television major, I care a lot about the Emmy's...probably a little too much. Every year I get my hopes up, thinking they'll actually recognize the best of the best of television. With so much good stuff on television, despite what most people say, there should be little room for crap. Shouldn't there?

Yet every year I am beyond disappointed. Yes, sometimes they get it right, awarding low-rated yet amazing shows like Arrested Development and 30 Rock, but most of the time, they just go with big names and past winners, without, it would appear, even WATCHING half of what's on television.

If they did watch, they would be EMBARRASSED by leaving off such names as Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton for their work on Friday Night Lights (which itself was left of the list to make room for Boston Legal!? Really, Emmy voters? Does David E. Kelley have naked pictures of all of you? Huge checks made out in your name?) If you watched just one episode of FNL and saw the movingly real and honest performances these two people gave, you would be ASHAMED! Ashamed I tell you!

Equally upsetting on the comedy front, of all the CBS comedies, including my personal favorite How I Met Your Mother (Neil Patrick Harris? Jason Segal? How could this NOT be funny!), and others which (I've been told) are consistenly funny, Big Bang Theory and New Adventures of Old Christine, you had to go with Two and a Half Men? REALLY Emmy Voters? Are sex and fart jokes that funny? Am I missing something? Is it just because you nominated them last year so to prove you were right then you have to do it again now? Sadly, it also beat out Weeds! WEEDS! I'm sorry, I didn't realize Charlie Sheen was more interesting than celebrated actress Mary Louise Parker. I must have been mistaken. And you didn't just give them a nod in the best comedy category, you also had to give them supporting nods as well? Bah! So no room for John Krasinski and Jenna Fisher? No room for Kevin Dillon? Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

I mean, yes, there are some positives. 30 Rock got a lot of deserved love (as well as every guest star of the season, apparently) as did Pushing Daisies, Dexter, Mad Men, and Lost, but it all just feels like more of the same. Every year the same list gets published and every year I'm disappointed. I won't even get into past disappointments. (No Lauren Graham? No Kristen Bell? WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE WATCHING!?!) I know it will never change no matter how many times they change the voting rules. There is too much to watch and too few people who care to really try. I know that. And I know I will still watch, because really, what else do I have to do. But that doesn't mean I won't be hurling things at the television while I do it. I mean, James Spader!? Really!?

If you want to see the whole list, check it out here. Maybe you can make sense of it all. Also check out my secret online boyfriend Michael Ausiello's take. See? I'm not alone, I tell you!

Well I was so excited for this day....but alas I am now sad. We got a whole big SNUB for my favorite Friday Night Lights. The one show who really needed the Emmy Nods. Sigh -- this will most likely be the end of FNL so enjoy it this season while it last. Otherwise YEAH for Kristin Chenoweth, Matt Dillion, and everyone in John Adams. BIG YEAH for American Idol & Ryan Seacrest (although secretly I think Jeff Probst should TOTALLY win for Survivior --- he is the BEST host in the biz...) I am also totally surprised Pushing Daises did not make the cut, I thought it would WIN jeeeze....

I don't watch a lot of television. The most I usually do, especially during the summer with my job and other activities, is look for a movie on TNT or USA to watch while I eat dinner. But about two months I ran into a show which grabbed me by the collar and did not let go. That show was NBC's Friday Night Lights.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="288" caption="null"][/caption]

It's the story of a high school football team in small town Texas, following their trials and triumphs as they fight for their town and their future every Friday night at the stadium. As a series it boasts impeccable production values: it creates a world you can immerse yourself in episode after episode. The houses, the high school, the stadium, all feel immensely authentic. The writers manage to give each and every line of dialogue a completely realistic tone and pace that is unmatched on contemporary drama shows. The characters are all very interesting and likeable (if rather implausibly good looking and OLD for high school students), especially Kyle Chandler's Coach Taylor, a good ol' fashioned role model father figure if ever there was one. I know next to nothing about American football and I never watch it on TV, but I found myself on the edge of my seat rooting for the Dillon Panthers in every one of their games. All that, combined with the compulsive, soap opera-inspired storylines and I was hooked for about a month and a half, wanting to watch nothing else. Fortunately all the episodes are available online at NBC or Hulu.com so I didn't have to wait a whole week for a new episode.

What really made a deep impression on me about this series, though, is its depiction of a certain way of living the 'American dream'. Of course the show is not meant to be documentary-style realistic so anything it portrays should be taken with a grain of salt. But I believe that as a whole the show's depiction of life in small town America rings true. And what a life it is: nearly everyone in town has at least one pick-up which they use to go just about everywhere. The more well-off families have one or more SUVs or mini-vans. Even the kids from working class families have their own cars and live in big suburban-style houses (bought on mortgage, of course). Nearly everyone gets take-out several nights a week. In the pilot episode star quarterback Jason Street explains to a reporter that he eats every day at Applebee's.

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="359" caption="Tim Riggins, livin' large in Texas"][/caption]

To paraphrase Patrick Henry's famous line, if this be working class life, these people sure are making the most of it! For a show that trains its spotlights on any number of controversial issues like religion in public life, alcohol abuse, steroids, disability, etc. there is never any comment on the biggest elephant in the room: the rampant consumerism of the characters' lifestyles. This is perhaps most acutely evident in the town's driving habits. Fullback Tim Riggins for example is a compulsive drinker, always drifting from one girlfriend to the next, without any kind of work, failing courses at school, and yet he always seems to have enough money to fill up his pick-up and drive off when things get too hard for him or he's in some kind of trouble. No matter what problems the characters face, they're always driving, and always going for take-out. And God forbid that anyone no matter how poor should be without cable TV, a cell phone and an I-pod.

Which is not to say that the show doesn't manage to present this lifestyle in an almost alluring light. It's nice to imagine living in a bubble, insulated from the larger world's woes, able to enjoy the open spaces racing along the highway in a good ol'fashioned 4x4, stopping on the way home to get a burger from Applebee's. But it should be obvious that such a lifestyle is simply unsustainable in the long run. Already due to skyrocketing gas prices we see that rural areas are being hit particularly hard, exactly in the kind of territory where FNL takes place, and the changes are forcing families to drastically reduce their discretionary spending (it was very sad to read that one family is foregoing video rentals due to high prices, as movies can be a very good, affordable way to wind down and recharge one's psychological batteries). Interestingly, though, according to one story there are certain things which many Americans just won't do without, and that includes cable TV. Maybe the show is realistic after all in depicting the materialistic mindset of even working-class families.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="350" caption="OK, this one's mostly just an excuse to show gorgeous Adrianne Palicki...but it's also symbolic of the American attitude toward driving"][/caption]

If peak oil theorists are right about soon-coming oil shortages and the need to dramatically change our way of life, Friday Night Lights may be fondly remembered in the near future as a snapshot of a time before $140/barrel oil and $4.1 gas, when to be poor in a small American town still meant having a huge house to yourself and the capacity to take the open road and just go, go, go.

'Twenty one' was great. 'Cept the loonnnngg wait prior the show, too many commercials from GV. Tsktsk.

The plot's intriguing. Jim Sturgess is cute. Kate Bosworth is hawt. And Aaron Yoo is funny (so is Josh Gad, actually.) They make it bearable that the movie was a tad draggy.

Ying and I had an absolutely enjoyable two hours gawking and squealing at Jim Sturgess' leading role as Ben Campbell - geeky boring MIT Math genius turned multi-persona card-counting whiz (at where else but Vegas; BLACKJACK!!)

Tell me - Is he CUTE or not?!

I am going to start learning card-counting from now on; prep myself for some big winnings next CNY - Ban Luck!! Ban Ban!! Gor Leng!!

Meng, watch out! Peanut-structures will help you no more!
Behold the next BlackJack Queen! :D

Have you ever watched this? I'm always lagging behind, I know. Storyline revolves around a Chicago man (stars Kyle Chandler as Gary Hobson) who myseriously receives tomorrow's papers every morning, accompanied by the orange tabby cat above.

Basically, Gary and his two friends make use of the "future" info to try prevent tragedies from occuring. Co-starring Shanesia Davis-Williams (Gary's blind receptionist friend) and Fisher Stevens (his former fellow stockbroker cum best friend), Early Edition premiered on CBS nearly twelve years ago in 1996, and I only recently caught it on AXN.

Dig the idea behind the show, and my family's so captivated by it they literally stuck by the TV to watch it every weeknights!

Also... I heard Friday Night Lights (also starring Kyle Chandler) is another critically acclaimed show that first aired two years ago - I know, am still lagging behind time. Am going to try catching it on Star World, as it is, I already missed quite a few episodes!

I stumbled upon this (great) blog some time ago whilst researching for my presentation.

Beth is the writer, and mum of two really cute kids (who are barely twelve mths apart in age? I think.) She suffered a devastating loss of her other twin boys in her belly a few mths before expected delivery; and reading her grief-stricken entries about her longing and regrets she will have for the rest of her life makes me feel as if I do understand her pain, her loss, her grief.

Yet, I think I won't really know what's she going through, the extent of pain and loss she has to go through, etc. How can we ever, right?

Her writing touches and inspires me. I hope I can be strong too, if not stronger, in a way or another. Of course, there are also upbeat entries such as working from home, her online business, friendship/family, moving woes, beautiful pictures of her kids, her new home, etc. And she gets other writers/friends to guest post on her blog (when she's busy)! P.S The entry titled 'Expiration Date' made me bawled my eyes out for her. P.P.S No, I am not a stalker. I appreciate her writing, that's all!

Who wants to guest post on my wordpress, I think I'll be too busy to blog regularly soon!

If you’re a fan of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and/or “Frida

If you're a fan of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and/or "Friday Night Lights," I'd like to say - welcome to the minority. It's not a matter of either being bad rather than one basically being buried by NBC while the other is on The Nip/Tuck Channel aka FX.

Save for a few select shows, I usually don't get to watching a whole lot of TV now. Thankfully, with a little time off from not working, I try to squeeze in a few episodes of either show while winding down before bed.

Both were on recommendations from friends and both are excellent in their own ways.

"Friday Night Lights" has almost everything working against, which is why is not exactly a ratings blockbuster. It's based on a movie, albeit a good one, but that just recalls television nightmares of TV adaptations of "Clueless," "Dangerous Minds" and "Ferris Bueller." Also, it's a sports show, something that has never been able to find an audience. Third, it looks like one of those "pretty people doing pretty things" shows, like "The O.C." with helmet and pads. Well, it bucks all of the said trends.

Like the movie, the show isn't just some hot guy passing a ball to another hot guy followed gratuitous sex with the cheerleaders. It's about dealing with the pressures of being in high school football in Texas, where the world revolves around the pigskin. It also deals with a lot of typical family and personal problems (yes, a steroids storyline is thrown in along the way). But the show redeems itself by keeping it as realistic as pretty any show can get and an excellent ensemble. There's no real way I can describe it that would compel you to watch other than just saying it's not what you think and it's probably one of the best dramas on television. Plus, it uses music from Explosions in the Sky.

As for "It's Always Sunny"'s shortcomings. Well, that can only be blamed because it's on a basic cable network that is known for smug looks from Denis Leary and Michael Chiklis' big bald head. Also, the show is about as dirty as a sitcom will get on television. But it's also one of the funniest shows on TV and yes, I take "The Office" and "30 Rock" into account as well.

My friend described it as, and pardon my French, "Four people being really shitty." And that describes it to a T. "Seinfeld" was an appetizer in terms of being self-centered and rotten, this is the main course. Basically, every episode is four, or five if you include Danny Devito, trying to find a new way to exploit something for their gain. From smoking crack to get food stamps to painting a baby found in a dumpster to get it on commercials, it's just terrible.

But like "Seinfeld," it taps everyone's dark side and all you can do is laugh. Taking it seriously would probably leave you really, really offended.

"Friday Night Lights" is entering its third season this fall while "It's Always Sunny" is going into its fourth so there's time to catch up. I'm not saying missing these would be a huge tragedy, but they're both so good, it'd be sad to see never get the attention they deserve.

Primeiro, as séries da TV fechada: The Wire, Dexter, Mad Men, Damages e The Tudors.
Abrams.

Apostas: Damages (FX), Dexter (Showtime), Mad Men (AMC), House (FOX) e última vaga entre Grey's Anatomy, Lost e Boston Legal (ABC) nessa ordem.

A última vaga será, então, disputada por Ugly Betty, Weeds e Two And A Half Men.

Apostas: Pushing Daisies (ABC), The Office (NBC), 30 Rock (NBC), Entourage (HBO) e Two And A Half Men (CBS)

Melhor ator coadjuvante em série drama: O mundo enlouqueceu! Cadê o Terry O'Quin? E o Henry Ian Cusick?

Apostas: Michael Emerson (Lost-ABC), Naveen Andrews (Lost-ABC), Blair Underwood (In Treatmente-HBO), William Shatner (Boston Legal-ABC) e Ted Danson (Damages-FX)

Melhor atriz coadjuvante em série drama: Cadê a Elizabeth Mitchell? De novo deixaram a melhor de todas de fora? Francamente, Sr. Emmy...

Apostas: Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy-ABC), Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters-ABC), Diane Wiest (In Treatment-HBO), Rose Byrne (Damages) e Candice Bergen (Boston Legal-ABC)

************************************************

Since NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” new renewal for Season 3 coming later this yea

Since NBC's "Friday Night Lights" new renewal for Season 3 coming later this year, the film crew of the show revealed the breaking news that two important characters of the show won't be returning. They will only return for a few episodes to explain their leaving. Jason Street (pictured above in wheelchair) and Smash Williams (pictured under Jason), will not be returning full time. The actors for those two characters are welcome to renew their contracts but I guess they are moving on as well. They were forced to get out of contract because of the writer's strike last year when the show was cut off.

To explain their leaving of the show, Jason and Smash both graduated from high school and their last 4 episodes they have left they will move on to a better life. Jason will move on to take care of his pregnant girlfriend and Smash will probably move on to college football.

Entertainment Weekly reports:

Aw man, this really blows that two of my favorite characters are leaving!

Ah well, I'm glad Season 3 is returning and at least Kyle Chandler and Taylor Kitsch aren't leaving.

I can't wait for the show to come back!

So as any Friday Night Lights fan knows, the show narrowly escaped cancellation when DirecTV teamed up with NBC in an unique arrangement (episodes will air first on DirecTV exclusively, then be rebroadcast on NBC months later) that saved it for at least one more season. And while that is still fantastic news, it turns out not everyone will be part of the deal.

Michael Ausiello, formerly of TVGuide.com and now of EW.com, is reporting that the actors who play Jason Street (Scott Porter) and Smash Williams (Gaius Charles) have been downgraded to recurring characters for the third season, and will be written out of the show with 4-episode arcs. I'm saddened that anyone from this great cast has to go, but if 2 had to get the boot, I'd probably pick the same two. I'd definitely pick Jason Street to wheel off into the sunset.

The problem with Jason is that he no longer has a purpose in the show. While critical for the first season -- his accident promoting Matt Saracen to QB1, and the amazing love triangle between Lyla Garrity, Jason, and Tim Riggins -- his role in the second season was rather insignificant. The majority of his storylines were apart from the rest of the core cast, so he rarely interacted with them. The love triangle was even dropped after Lyla moved on to her rodenty Christian youth leader boyfriend. Which is why it makes perfect sense to cut the character -- his absence will have little impact on the show. Odds are he, his waitress one-night-stand and the miracle baby will move to live close to her mom, or something similar. Best of luck, Street.

The downgrading and departure of Smash Williams is much more upsetting to me, although it is also understandable given that he graduated at the end of season 2. The character was so different from the rest of the Panthers -- cocky and arrogant over a core of fear, compared to Riggins' sullenness and Saracen's neediness and insecurity. As the only major black character, Smash also let the writers explore heated issues in a small Texas town, which is part of what makes this show so amazing. And I love his mom, who will surely follow him out the door. He fell victim to the curse of all dramas set in high school -- either let the characters graduate and lose them/move with them to an inferior new location (i.e. see Veronica Mars, season 3), or suspend all belief and manipulate the plot in some desperate attempt to justify their staying. FNL prides itself too much on its realistic writing and portrayal of characters, so there really was no choice but to let Smash go. He'll be missed.

Well enough doom and gloom. I can't wait for season 3! Ideally, I'd like to see Riggins seduce Julie Taylor to make Lyla jealous, while Coach Taylor tries to rip him apart and Saracen stands around muttering and listening to Landry's goading insults. It'd be awesome.

What do you think? Will you miss Jason and Smash? If you had to cut 2 characters, who would you pick? And what's your ideal plotline for season 3?

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that two Friday Night Lights' castmembers, Gaius Charles (Smash Williams) and Scott Porter (Jason Street), will only appear on a recurring basis when the show returns on DirecTV for its third season.

According to executive producer Jason Katims, "Both of their characters have now graduated and in the creative spirit of the show, we have decided to give them powerful four episode arcs that will observe their characters as they launch themselves into the next phase of their lives. We certainly will keep the door open for both actors to return in the future, depending on the actors' availabilities."

I'm a little sad to say goodbye to Smash, but it will frankly be a relief to see the end of Jason's miracle pregnancy storyline. And some of the problems with the show's scattershot season two seemed to derive from the difficulty of servicing such a large ensemble. Here's hoping a streamlined cast will make for a tighter season when the show returns.

Friday Night Lights had one of the greatest first seasons in television. The show was awesome, every episode felt real and earned, and other than that every time the team won they did so in incredible fashion, it had nearly no flaws. The second season was a disappointment, with NBC execs meddling and trying to change the show into some Gossip Girl shlock that simply didn't fit with the show's vibe. Fortunately the show was saved, and will return for a 3rd season in the fall and until it proves it no longer is good, I am counting on you out there to watch it, so that I may continue watching it.

Alas, according to Entertainment Weekly, the show will be returning without two of it's stars and more compelling characters, Jason Street and Smash Williams. Street was the star quarterback who was paralyzed in the first episode and Smash was the star, cocky running back. Sure, Tim Riggins will return to drink and chase chicks, and for that I am thankful, but the loss of Jason Street, whose subplot was one of the most compelling on the show, and the large personality of Smash will be sorely missed. Both characters will apparently be given 4 episode arcs to close their stories which is nice, but means that the show better find some suitable replacements. I just hope they don't do some stupid casting and just remake the characters with new younger actors.

Season 3 will be on a short leash for me, if the show returns to it's beginnings and takes away the teeny-bopper crap, then it should be just as good as ever, after all, all the Taylors are returning...

Also fortunate, the show is retaining it's most important assets, the fine trio of Amy Teagarden, Minka Kelly and Adrian Palicki:

Associated press has confirmed the Hollywooddeadlinedaily report that that SNL’s Amy Poleher will be joining the cast of the OFFICE spin off show that will air on NBC next season. The 36-year-old comic actress, who just received an Emmy nomination for her work on SNL, co-starred in the moderate hit feature film Baby Mamma alongside Tina Fey this spring. Her star is obviously shining bright these days.

[caption id="attachment_218" align="alignleft" width="180" caption="ER"][/caption]

According to TV guide, actress Courtney Cox will do a 3 episode story arc on SCRUBS. The sitcom will air on the ABC network this fall, moving over from the NBC network. Cox’s show DIRT, which was canceled after two seasons on the FX cable channel, was a slimy piece of television that had some entertainment value but always seemed below Cox’s level of quality, particularly considering her claim to fame was the landmark sitcom “Friends.” Speaking of NBC, it will be interesting as to how they handle the last season of the long running ER. While the show is not as good as it was in its heyday it still is a quality drama that I continue to watch. Original cast member Noah Wyle will be back for 4 episodes, reprising his role of Dr. Carter. It will be interesting to see if George Clooney will return as Dr Ross for the show’s final episode. I still believe Clooney’s work on ER was as good as anything he’s ever done. An appearance by him would certainly acknowledge that fact!

[caption id="attachment_219" align="alignright" width="250" caption="Grey's Anatomy"][/caption]

There’s been a whole lot of rumbling lately about the status of Emmy winning actress, Katherine Hegel’s, future on the hit ABC show Grey’s Anatomy. Whether she wants to stay or whether producers want her to go, I think the show needs her as she’s a big part of its overall chemistry. Despite a strike-shortened season last year, Grey’s remained one of TV’s most entertaining dramas. Hegel certainly has a bright future in movies (She’s already scored big in Knocked Up) but Grey’s Anatomy is one heck of a day job and her staying put is a win-win for all involved, especially the fans of the show.

[caption id="attachment_220" align="alignleft" width="220" caption="Lost"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_222" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Friday Night Lights"][/caption]

Glad to see “Lost” and “Dexter” getting Emmy nominations for best Drama as I love both programs. Personally, I continue to feel that Lost is one of the greatest pieces of television ever produced. On the flip side, I was pretty disappointed to see that NBC’s Friday Night Lights was completely ignored. It’s hard to believe the voting members actually watch the show because it’s easily one of the 5 best dramas on the air! The creative team behind Lights has produced high quality episodes week in and week out for two straight seasons. The show certainly deserved some recognition. It was also great to see actor Michael Emerson, who plays the fascinating Benjamin Linus on “Lost,” get a best supporting actor nod. He is simply great in the role and he’s turned that character into something very special.
