I played frisbee this afternoon. No, not standing around in a circle throwing a plastic disc. Ultima

I played frisbee this afternoon. No, not standing around in a circle throwing a plastic disc. Ultimate frisbee. Basically the aim is to get the frisbee from one end of the field to the other. The person with the frisbee isn't allowed to move but has to look for a member of his team to pass to. Once the team have reached the other end of the field they need to catch the frisbee in the "end zone" to score a point. Obviously the other team aren't just standing around while all this is happening. Their job is to try and get the frisbee back so that they can have a go at trying to score aa point. It's a non-contact sport, so no taking the frisbee out of each other's hands allowed, but they can try to catch it, knock it to the ground and just generally get in the way of the person trying to get the frisbee. So really you spend 90% of the game trying desperately to get free of your marker and only 10% catching and throwing the frisbee (which under official rules is called a disc by the way). We played for about an hour and a half. That's a lot of running! Especially when you have a cold. I spent the first 15 minutes of the game barely able to breathe. Things got better later on though and I actually had fun. Despite the fact that I haven't played for at least half a year I did reasonably well. My throwing wasn't completely off, I managed a few good catches and unusually I was marking someone I could actually vaguely keep up with. Plus it gave me a chance to get some much needed exercise. I bet I'll be aching all over tomorrow though. A long hot shower shall be in order tonight methinks.

And now I need to go and collect me tea from the oven. I've made a yummy looking potato bake with lots of grated cheese on top. After all, what's the point of exercising if you're not going to treat yourself to something nice and fattening afterwards? ;-)

A young tosser enjoys the ultimate sporting experience, apparently

[caption id="attachment_26" align="alignleft" width="111" caption="A young tosser enjoys the ultimate sporting experience, apparently"][/caption]

So what’s the deal with “Ultimate Frisbee”? What’s so ultimate about it? For the uninitiated, this is a competitive team game based on the popular disc-throwing pastime often observed at the beach or in a park. In fact, it is commonly known simply as “Ultimate”, because Frisbee is a trademark of one of the major manufacturers of said plastic discs and, much in the same way that the Radio Times is not the only TV listings magazine available, there are other companies making plastic discs for the purposes of throwing.

It’s a sport that prides itself on fair play and sportsmanship – even serious competition matches are self-refereed by the players and foul play and gamesmanship are given short shrift. But “Ultimate”? Sounds like the inventor (Joel Silver, a native of our colonies across the Atlantic) may be related to the chap who named baseball’s World Series, a competition open to teams from the US of A and Canada but not the other 180-odd nations that actually make up our world.

Are we to believe that that these disc-flingers are more sportsmanlike than the average crown-green bowler, ping-pong player or curler. Or indeed many other sporty types? I suspect not. I propose they should urgently reconsider renaming their tossing activity to something a little less self-congratulatory - at least until they invent a plastic disc that solves the world’s current economic crisis, ends war and famine or bestows the thrower with immortality. Then they’d really have something that might deserve an “Ultimate” accolade.

After we made our usual pit stops @ the bank (ha ha ha sounds like i have a million bucks!!) and @ the petrol kiosk...we start our journey and all within the speed limit.

It was smooth and easy drive to Malacca...no traffic jam...and thank God, no accidents ;)

Arrived in Malacca just after ten in the morning and like good tourist we went to visit ...

...then our tummies started to rumble so off we went to have some lunch. When we reached the apartment, we felt it looked abit deserted ...ooooh spooky ( this is result of watching too many thrillers like 'Hitcher' 'Wrong Turn'!!) After checking into the apartment, we unpacked, plonked ourselves down in the living room. Three of us played Cranium the easier version for younger children..others talked...viewed photos...read the newspaper

My brother in-law decided to visit his mum...so he herded his family into the car while we the Yongs were left in the apartment to have a lovely afternoon nap! ZZZzzzzzzz.

Aaron, my nephew wanted to take some sunset photos and Sarah wanted to play...frisbee! So off we went...undeterred by the cloudly sky and slight drizzle that had just started.

Pharmaco test came & went. I have this uncanny ability to miss out on a chapter every test. And the evil chapter WILL come out. This hasn't fail me yet. There was the bloody ada during biochem. And tooth devt during oral biology. This time is no exception.

Antihistamine came out. I only realised there was such a topic when justine told me over lunch. Like, 30 minutes before the test. But the panic attacks that was supposed to come didn't. Think I'm pass caring about the distinctions between A,B & C. The lines have fuzzed out and I just want to keep my head, and better yet, my neck above waters, above borderline.

Post-test, we made our way down to src for some frisbee tossing. Dang we were so shag in the first couple of minutes. And we weren't even marking people agressively to begin with. I declared half time to save my ailing lungs lest some helpful bystander hand me an inhaler. Or pin me to the floor and do a CPR on me. Depending on the face, i might just falter and feign death. Or spring up and wriggle my muscles.

Mister clouds decide to give us zero-stamina-slugging-shoulders a hand and so descend a generous downpour. We moved on to plan B at great wall and chat alot admist the oriental ching chang restaurant music. Numbers declined and clock ticked on. So the remainder few of us headed to holland v for dinner.

I say it was enjoyable. The company was great. We talked alot and i like my three amigo.

Team green. Who won mainly because qianli was shuttling back and forth the court at breakneck speed so he can throw the frisbee and catch it himself. The rest of us did our part by not blocking him.

Well - it's true our little movie adventure did not work out Saturday night but we did enjoy ourselves at the halloween festival at Traxx Farms. And there was the typical crazy outdoor fun. So much so that Krissy and I are still exhausted and sore!

Frisbee, baby!

So then Gwen found this stick...

so it took us awhile to convince her that it might be a bit better idea to put the stick down before any or all of us got hurt. The swings were a better idea.

Opening question, very important-- Ninjas or pirates and why?

Wow. i've never really thought this one through.... i've always gone with ninja's just because they're silent but deadly....and really cool. I think i'm now officially changing to a pirate though. Ninjas don't really give their opponents the chance to react, its just a swift attack that ends the battle. But a pirate must be brave and daring and take on their enemies head to head. i'll go with a pirate. it's more fair choice.

You've been described as a unique force on the frisbee football field. Your early play with the College Group had you challenging and even shutting down Brandon Russell. Can you describe your passion for the game & reveal how you manage your secret powers on & off the field?

I'm not sure i shut down Brandon. But i certainly did frustrate him enough to pull off a few wins against him. Ooph. Well i would almost consider my OBSESSION for the game back in the glory days (all four years of high school) a little bit pathetic and laughable. i'd say that it took over and hurt any friendships or other important things happening in my life during that time, but i didnt mind, and i still dont. it definitely puts me in the best of moods. any opportunity i have to impress someone with a frisbee, i'll do it.

This week, you sponsored the ipod mix of the week for our indoor soccer game. Talk about a few of the picks and why you included them, and please comment on the previous week's mix from Mike Simon that was pure Elton...

Hmmm.... well Mike Simon in any aspect of life is a hard act to follow, which is why i was ultra specific and careful to pick the greatest and most epic songs i could find without getting too obscure. Before i heard Mike's mix, i was considering bringing a whole lot of elton to play when my time came. Mike beat me to the punch though. Good thinkin Mike, well played. As for my mix, the best song on the mix in my opinion is probably gonna hafta be a David Bowie song. Another great one thatll be great with the intensity will be The Great Gig in the Sky - Pink Floyd. Best vocal performance of all time. Another great one: Silent Jealousy - X Japan.

Tell us about how you got connected to people at WBCC? We've heard something about an afro & a homecoming king, but we don't know the whole story. Tell us one way being connected to church has
challenged you or changed you...

Well the first time i came to youth group was in 8th grade for a laser tag thing. Way back in the day. Then i think it was either Tucker Zimmerman.... or Ali Nipert that invited me in high school.. And i've known Sammy Schutte since kindergarten so he's always great to be hanging with cause we've always been pals. We used to sing "My Girl" together in 6th great. good stuff. Then i realized that everyone at wbcc likes frisbee... that was a huge thing for me. Then i got to know everyone and went on some trips and thats when i started realizing its one of the better things to ever happen to me. Good people all over the place at any given time with plenty of people to look up to, you really can't go wrong. I was on the verge of slidin down a lonely and slippery slope before i found WBCC and i beleive that everyone and all their happiness lifted me away from that slope so its been really good for me i think.

What's something you can share about yourself that most of us don't know?

Even though i am really shy and don't talk much or call anyone, i really do love you all. no lie. love ya very much even if you dont think i do.

We've also heard you are an aspiring news journalist giant. Others call you an underground uber-gifted artist & musician. What are you really passionate about doing and becoming?

Well college ruined my view of what i wanna become... i want to do a lot of things... but sometimes i think some goals cant be reached. Even so. i looove to draw, and i get better and better everyitme i pick up a pencil and draw instead of take notes in class. I dont think im good enough a guitar or piano playre to be considered a musician, but i like pokin around on em when i can. I think im joinin the peace corps after college. thats as far as i wanna think ahead so far.

As part of your job you were able to join in Obama-mania at Invesco on the last night of the DNC. Can you give us your non-biased, best journalist description of the scene. And if that's boring, please use all the bias you'd like to...

That whole week was amazing. So many happy people with the same hope and dreams. It was like nothing i've ever seen. i could have reached out and touched barack if i wanted to get tazed by a security guard. but i didnt. I've also never seen so many happy tears at one single event. it really was something special. Also, being unsure of my political standing, i think i had more fun just watching people. it was great.

Give us the best "would you rather" you've ever heard?

Would you rather have one giant tooth or millions of tiny teeth

Are you a reader? Any recent books you loved?
i'm not really a reader... i loved .Perks of being a wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. i also like stephen king books and The Giver by Lois Lowry

Best concert you've been to OR would want to go to?
I went to an Alice in Chains concert, a Primus Concert, and a Killers concert all at the same venue in a 5 day time period. it was epic to say the least. i had bruises on my hipbones for weeks cause i was gettin pushed at the hip-level barricades the whole time.

Favorite TV Show & Why?
mystery science theater 3000 cause its awesome. south park for the same reasons.

Favorite U.S. City & Why?
i like littleton just fine! and ocean city, maryland

Country you could move to and why?
madagascar. its tropical and has cool animals!

Will your hair be long or short in 09? why?

The cookout starts at 6. Bring burgers, brats, beer, or any combination of those things, if you like. Dress for frisbee. You never know what might happen.

Dan notes that he will not be there, so plan accordingly. I will leave that to you to figure out what that means :).

If you need directions, post a comment to that effect and use your real email address in your credentials.

You should leave some kind of comment anyway. Don't ask why, just DO it. DO it!

Odwiedziny w Parku Yoyogi to ciekawa wycieczka. W niedziele pelno tam roznego typu atrakcji. Przede wszystkim dlatego, ze Japonczycy mieszkajac w malych mieszkankach nie maja mozliwosci rozwijania swoich hobby. Wychodza wiec do parku by tam razem z innymi sie dobrze bawic.

[gallery]

Obok Elvisow jest kupa roznego rodzaju grup muzycznych. Rozkladaja w parku swoj sprzet grajacy i daja mini koncerty.

W Parku Yoyogi spotkalismy tez grupe Frisbee.

Stuff White People Like was really funny and relevant for about 9 seconds back in later winter/early spring '08. They had a good run including Marathons (No. 27) and Wrigley Field (No. 30) and may have reached their high water mark with Performance Sports Wear (No. 87).

However, they kinda jumped the shark after their book deal. The low point may be Facebook (No. 106), which also plugged the official Stuff White People Like Facebook application.

Now they're clearly running out of stuff that white people like, and it's becoming super-obvious. I'm waiting for Stuff White People Like No. 283: Breathing.

I didn't know they were still posting new topics until I was idly browsing my Google RSS reader (Stuff White People Like No. 236?). This one was pretty obvious: Ultimate Frisbee.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="347" caption="The Fightin' Whites"][/caption]

Tomorrow night our white 0-3 ultimate frisbee team will try to win our first game. Hopefully we can vanquish our white opponents. Maybe after that we'll drink coffee, campaign for Barack Obama and listen to public radio.

If you are reading the title of this post and thinking, "The ultimate what?" then you are in need of a serious education.

Ultimate frisbee is perhaps the ultimate sport, combining, as it does, the best of football, basketball and soccer with high-flying frisbee action. The only reason it has not shot to international prominence is that it is perpetually the sport of choice of the slacker, and enjoys a reputation as such. However, when played by experienced and athletic performers, the sport truly rises to levels of excitement that have potential far beyond the semi-underground place where the it resides today.

Like the ping-pong tables of our youth, frisbee has always been there, ever-present, under-respected.

I was introduced to ultimate in college, via the disorganized pickup game, and the slightly more organized intramural game. Later on in Tokyo I played pickup games in Yoyogi Park on weekends, but as the kids came my involvement gradually trailed off. Here in Honolulu I've gotten more involved than I ever have, joining the Hawaii Ultimate fall league. The folks in the league are pretty serious about the game, and I'm actually learning plays and formations for the first time in my life. The team I'm on, Polar Bears for Pipelines, is 3-1, but I've started to discover that there are differences between what I was able to do five years ago and now. It now takes me a whole week to recover from the hamstring strains and calf pulls that seem to slow me up in each and every game.

Also, not a/an eulogy. (I looked online and saw it both ways so...it was basically no help.)

My dear friend Emi came to hang out this past week. You know someone is a true friend when they act like it's no big deal that your house is a wreck and you make them sit on the floor and all you have to feed them is frozen pizza. (I have eaten frozen pizza four times this week, by the way, although I do typically cook it first.) Incidentally, Emi is in the process of moving too. She brought us French magnetic poetry, which is awesome. Emi has a lot of great qualities, and the fact that she gives very cool and useful gifts illustrates that.

I met Emi when we were in junior high, I think. She is really fun and does things that need doing, simply because they need to be done. "Somebody's got to do it," she would say. Somebody had to play keyboard for our youth choir, and she knew a wee bit of piano but since nobody more qualified stepped up she did it. And it was fine. When many of our peers (myself included) were feeling disconnected at church, somebody needed to do something, so she organized an informal Bible study that fit the bill perfectly. In high school we used to sit around during down time on mission trips or camp with another girl named Laurie and sing harmonies, although probably none of us would have claimed to have a great voice. Considering our non-vocal team status they always turned out surprisingly well. Emi and I were working at a weekend youth thing a year or two later when we found out Laurie had cancer, and that was the end of the harmonies.

Emi has phenomenal taste. I mean, she is in a league with Audrey Hepburn. Everything from clothes to makeup to friends to music to movies - if she recommends it, you know it is a solid choice. I asked her to help me pick out Jake's wedding present for this reason, and it was a hit. But beyond that, she is a really great person. I guess being half Japanese and half Irish doesn't hurt, because there is a lot of awesomeness in that combination. She has a lot of wisdom, lets you borrow her socks at frisbee if you forget yours (another sign of true friendship), lets you borrow her ipod to DJ your wedding reception if you are not cool enough to own one, lets you borrow her clothes that are so much more tasteful and stylish than your own, and drives you around when you don't have a car. Reading over that I sound like an Emi mooch, but the thing about Emi is she is so cheerful about giving or being helpful in any way. And she is not too proud to let people help her too, which is a rarity. Also she is very cute, has a lovely smile, and is a great athlete.

Once at Bible study she said something that has stuck with me: "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem." At the time she was talking about how the church (as in Christians, not a particular church) neglects their duty of caring for people and then complains about how the government does it, but this has since really shaped the way I think about and act in all sorts of areas. If there is something that is just not right, whether it's litter or people going hungry when others are throwing away tons of food, instead of waiting for someone else to do something or complaining about it, I should get up and do it myself. Somebody's got to.

Right then here's a preview of what's on tomorrow.

Sunday is going to be a big day for Preston, as they are having the annual 'Preston On The Move' day and this involves a 5km and 10km run in the morning, followed by a bike event in the afternoon.

Now it should be noted that although people from UCLan who are taking part will be meeting outside the SU tomorrow morning at 9am to take part in the run, the actual event is taking place in the city centre and some of the main roads will be shut, so if you do drive, plan your journey beforehand.

For those of you taking part in either event, good luck, I think you'll need it, but for those not taking part, why not pop down into the city centre and cheer everyone on?! I'm going to do my best to pop down for a bit and take some pictures for the blog and hopefully a couple of the Frequency Radio guys who are taking part in the run will be doing a little write up for the blog.

And that's it from me for week one of GIAG 08. Hope you've enjoyed reading it, have a great weekend whatever you're doing and I'll be back on Monday after sampling the Art Attack poject, Ultimate Frisbee, Photography workshop and the Stage Make-Up workshop.

Tata,
