How to Center Roller Skate Plates

Probably nothing can make learning to quad skate more difficult than having your plates not centered

Probably nothing can make learning to quad skate more difficult than having your plates not centered properly. I've seen pairs of skates with one plate pointing at the little toe and the mate pointing at the big toe. Imagine what fun you would have trying to skate in a straight line.

Many quad plates are mounted with the centerline of the plate following the "geometrical" centerline of the foot. This is the typical setup for ice and inline skates. While this may allow you to glide in a straight line on one foot on your quads you will notice when you look down that the front wheel on the inside of your foot sticks way out while the outside wheel hardly shows. For better balance and to transmit your leg power through the wheels more efficiently the centerline of the plate should point slightly to the outside edge of the skate boot. The amount of front wheel sticking out from either side of the boot will be closer to being equal. A good rule of thumb is to have the plate centerline pointing at the gap between the second toe (the long one next to the big toe) and the third toe (the one to the outside of the second toe).

You can determine this position by putting on the boot before mounting and marking the spot with a piece of chalk. Run the chalk mark around to the sole. Use a centerpunch to make a little dimple on the bottom of the boot at this point and make another centerpunch mark at the back of the heel. You now have your reference points for centering the plate. Refer to the article on plate location for determining where to mount the plate on the centerline.

What are some of the reasons for centering the plates in this fashion.

Your weight is more evenly distributed across your wheels.

Sharp turns are much easier to handle.

As you are skating your front gliding foot will curve gradually to the outside, allowing for a more efficient skating movement and transmitting of power from your legs. Watch a speed skating race sometime (ice, inline or quad). This is the technique they use.

It has been six months since we started Ben’s RDI program. (For those who don’t know

It has been six months since we started Ben's RDI program. (For those who don't know what I'm talking about, you can catch up here, here, and here.) We traveled to Jacksonville, FL for his bi-annual re-evaluation last month. We keep in touch with April, our RDI consultant, through bi-weekly phone conferences, email and video clips of our progress. We knew going in to the re-eval that there had been some remarkable progress, that Ben had experienced significant growth. And, of course, the 'numbers' backed that up. His developmental test scores all showed improvement. Now if you know me at all, you know that I don't believe in numbers. Meaning, data in measurable units has it's worth, but it's not very significant worth to me. I prefer to evaluate growth and change through more holistic means. For example, I try not to weigh myself very often, but I sure notice when my jeans feel too snug. RDI, in all it's wisdom, also does not rely on numbers. The tests are given (observation rating scales) and scored, but mostly for show. The truest gains in Ben's development have been so natural, so organic, that we barely noticed them as they occurred. Much of the week of re-eval, we spent remarking, "Oh yeah...he *used* to do that, didn't he?" It is amazing to me how much you can forget, and how easy we readjust our idea of "normal".

In addition to the RDI re-evaluation, we had April screen and develop a HANDLE program for Ben to address his sensory difficulties. HANDLE is the Holistic Approach to NeuroDevelopment and Learning Efficacy. We've been using a general program developed for children on the Autism Spectrum, but now we have a program tailor-made for Ben's specific needs. Like RDI, this is a family-based therapy and it focuses on the roots of Ben's sensory challenges by gently strengthening the neurological systems that support how his body works in the world. And again, the gains are so subtle and natural that we barely notice them until we look back.

Some examples of changes we've experienced in the last six months are:

Expanded language. THEN: I noted back in March that Ben's language seemed to have plateaued out at 2-3 word phrases with memorized scripts or 'sound bytes' that were repeated over and over in increasing volume until you replied with your scripted 'line'. NOW: Scripted language is an occasional to rare occurrence. Ben doesn't always use longer phrasing than before, but what he does say is much richer and more dynamic. Almost everything is novel--created for the moment. He comments, asks questions, answers questions, reflects on past events... It is truly amazing.

Using pronouns. THEN: Ben had a really really hard time with the you/me thing. For example, he'd say "Mama, hold you." when he wanted me to hold him, or "you want more" when *he* wanted more of something. We'd repeat the right way to say things, withhold wanted items until he repeated it correctly over and over, but he never caught on. April promised it would come naturally with RDI and encouraged us to let it go. NOW: With his new understanding of himself as a person, Ben uses correct pronouns almost 100% of the time WITH NO DIRECT TEACHING. Do you know how many children I taught with "pronoun goals" on their IEPs?? Amazing, again.

Eye contact. THEN: Ben would give eye contact, but only if he recognized you as 'safe'. It took three days before my mom got an engaged look from Ben once when they came to visit. He also didn't use eye contact for gathering information--facial referencing, it's called. NOW: Ben shows a great understanding of facial referencing and it's importance to connectedness. He even seeks out other children in small groups by trying to establish face to face contact!!

Social play. THEN: Ben seemed to like other children, but would keep a safe distance and just watch. He engaged mostly in solitary 'play' with objects. NOW: Ben LOVES playing with other children, seeks them out, and attempts to INITIATE interactions without any direct intervention of what to say, how to move, preparedness of 'what might happen'. He is not without quirks, and is not 'typical' yet, but he has gained more in six months in this area than I ever imagined. I rarely saw social gains occur this quickly in the classroom, and NEVER in a child on the Spectrum. School was every day. We have playgroup once, maybe twice, a week.

Bits and pieces. Ben has overall less anxiety. He can now run, jump, and blow bubbles--all things that were very difficult and did not seem to improve no matter how much we practiced before. He can dress himself, wash his hands, and draw a face--all without my 'teaching' him. He laughs at jokes, reminds me of things I forget (seatbelt, keys, where I put my phone), fights with his brother (No, Will! That's mine!), used pretend play, and wants to do everything HIMSELF.

This is just a snippet, of course. It doesn't really give you a good enough picture of the bright, clear-eyed, quick-to-respond, happy little boy that has emerged from our Ben. We can't wait to see what's coming next.

I do have to give a shout-out to Elaine Gottschall (RIP) who authored the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Healing Ben's gut and leveling out his digestive issues, including night pain that interfered with sleep, has been equally beneficial in treating Ben. So, huzzah for the trifecta--RDI, HANDLE, and SCD!

All MINI owers must had noticed that the door handle bar can be scratched easily. So over the weekend, up to a point that I could not stand the scratches any longer, I have decided to repaint it!

Removing the door Panel is easy, since there is aplenty of web site teaching people how, I am not going to describe it here. It is very easy and all you need is a T-30 Torx bit and some guts!

After taking the panel out, I brought it up to my office and had the air con on to make sure that the Hong Kong Humidity will not "wet" the paint too much. Cleaning it with detergent, slightly sanded it with some really fine sand paper, mask it and it is ready to be paint!

After some careful color picking, the painted that matches with the original mini cooper handle is the Tamiya TS-17 Aluminum Silver!

HK$25 and approx. 30mins of work, a Brand new looking door panel is back!

Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Church of England, said he was shocked

Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Church of England, said he was shocked at the furor that arose after he told an audience earlier this year that he thought it "seems unavoidable" that some accommodation for Islamic sharia law would be implemented in Britain. However, Williams' statements evidently were prophetic, as a report in the Sunday Times has revealed that the Islamic law is already operating in Britain, not only in domestic disputes, but also in criminal cases, reports Hilary White, LifeSiteNews.com.

The Times said this weekend that the government had officially accepted the existence of sharia law courts to officiate in Muslim civil cases. The rulings of a network of five sharia courts, in London, Birmingham, Bradford and Manchester with the network's headquarters in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, are now enforceable "with the full power of the judicial system, through the county courts or High Court."

Sheikh Faiz-ul-Aqtab Siddiqi, a barrister and head of the Muslim Action Committee, told the Times that the Arbitration Act 1996 allows rulings by his Muslim Arbitration Tribunal to be enforced by county and high courts.

"The act allows disputes to be resolved using alternatives like tribunals. This method is called alternative dispute resolution, which for Muslims is what the sharia courts are," he said.

Siddiqi said he expected the courts to handle a greater number of "smaller" criminal cases in coming years as more Muslim clients approach them. "All we are doing is regulating community affairs in these cases," said Siddiqi.

The Times said that these Muslim courts started operating in August 2007 and have dealt with more than 100 cases, ranging from Muslim divorce and inheritance cases as well as six cases of domestic violence, normally a criminal procedure under British law. The Times quoted Inayat Bunglawala, assistant secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, who said that since Jewish tribunals operate in Britain, parity should be given to Islamic courts.

Dominic Grieve, the opposition's shadow home secretary, told the Times that courts operating in criminal and family law cases outside the regular system would be "unlawful." "British law is absolute and must remain so," he said.

Melanie Philips, writing on her blog at the Spectator, wrote that "confusion abounds" over the report, because there is "nothing new here at all" and said that the story is "overheated and misleading." Decisions of sharia courts, she said, have always been enforceable under the Arbitration Act.

But, she said, this does not "dispel the serious concern about the spread of sharia law and the scope of these courts." Philips is the author of "Londonistan", a book that examines the incursions of violent Islamic extremists into British society with the assistance of British government and courts.

She said the comparison between Islamic courts and Jewish tribunals were misleading, since the latter operate completely within the framework of British law and do not seek to set up an alternate judicial system.

Moreover, she said, "given the inferior status of Muslim women under sharia, any sharia arbitration in respect of domestic violence can hardly be viewed with equanimity."

"The key point," she said, "is that sharia law is not compatible with English law or the principles of equality and human rights that it embodies. The result ... is that Britain is allowing the development of a de facto parallel legal system in Britain, thus destroying our society's cardinal principle of one law for all."

She added, "Indeed, if this continues Britain will break up as a unitary state governed by one law for all ... This is the way a society fractures - and then goes under."

Damian Thompson, the editor of the Catholic Herald, wrote on his blog at the Daily Telegraph website that he not only agreed with Dominic Grieve that the idea of a parallel Muslim system of law was "unlawful", but that it is an "outrage."

"There's something creepy about the way the police allow sharia 'courts' to persuade women to withdraw allegations against their husbands."

A BBC Radio 4 report found that the cases covered by these tribunals are not restricted to domestic disputes. Radio 4 quoted a Somalian youth worker who lives in London who said that in one case a group of Somali youths were arrested on suspicion of stabbing another Somali teenager. The victim's family told the police it would be settled out of court and the suspects were released on bail. The matter was considered settled when an unofficial "court" ordered the assailants to compensate the victim's family. Scotland Yard said they had no record of the incident.

In his book Islam in Britain, Patrick Sookhdeo, director of the Institute for the Study of Islam and Christianity, wrote, "Sharia courts now operate in most larger cities, with different sectarian and ethnic groups operating their own courts that cater to their specific needs according to their traditions."

Report from the Christian Telegraph

Or more elegantly put, what a door with two handle affords (An affordance is a quality of an object, or an environment, that allows an individual to perform an action - Wikipedia).

This has to do with an annoyance I have had for quite a while and that is, why are there doors with handles on both sides? Think to yourself, how many doors have push/pull signs? In my opinion much too many considering if a simple design change was implemented they could be done away with and there would never be any question which way a door goes

Currently those doors that have handles on either side afford for a user to either push or pull. If all doors were designed such that one side had a handle on one side did not, it would be very simple because it would be known that the handle is the pull side, and the other is the push side!

Because of this poor design I have actually created my own heuristics to avoid embarrassingly walking into a door (and yes I definitely have walked into one of these doors). If I am uncertain whether it is push or pull, I'll put my hand on the handle and push in slightly (it is only noticeable if you know what I am doing) and if the door does not budge, I proceed to pull it. I personally think it is a little ridiculous that I have had to come up with a best practice to open a door!

This may be a rather trivial example, but these type of affordance problems can be seen anywhere, whether physical or in software/the web. A (contrived) web example could be a text box that you cannot type in that has a white background. A white background usually indicates that the text box can be typed in, and if the user attempts to type in it and they cannot they will be surprised. Despite the contrived nature of the above the example, it was meant to get you thinking about the software that you use and design affords. It is important in design to always be aware of what a given design affords, if there is any question about what it affords, I can guarantee you that someone is having trouble using it.

So go ahead look around at any physical or software design and think about what it affords, you may be surprised at what you discover.

Usual thing, things started off late, ten o'clock (10 am). There were a myriad of reasons why we started so late. A couple of retrainee machines were giving trouble, the instructor had to setup and was also experiencing some computer problems. The first hour was spent redrawing the Teacup for two reasons. The instructor didn't save and to go through the steps for someone who was absent for Skills Training 003. It was kinda good for the review but this took a full hour. I actually helped another student build a cup from scratch during this time.

We finally got around to creating the handle for the teacup and we subsequently created a plate/saucer for it. The plate was created by drawing a 2D curve and utilizing MAYA to rotate it to generate a complete object. NURBS.

A while back we put longer door knobs on our interior doors so mom could open them easier. Lately she's had a problem getting them to close because of problems getting the wheelchair to move well in our small hallway. I bought a small clip and tied it to the door handle but the stress caused the door handle to pretty much fall apart. To solve the problem (and not shell out a whole lot) we used the same setup but got a $1.50 hook to screw into the door. Problem solved. And it doesn't look too bad. With more time I'd tie it a little better for looks but that it works is what mattered.

dinokat. Tentativa tankar. "Jo. Jag vet att världen är grym. Tack."

deep.edition vill veta.

Way up there on my list of meaningless, useless advise is: God never gives you more than you can handle. Even if I believed that God actually "gives" anything to anybody, I would find this adage ridiculous. What's the alternative to handling it? Dropping out of society? Killing yourself? For most people, these are not even options, so what other choice is there but to just handle it?

However, there are many different definitions of "handling it."

You could take all that life throws at you, no matter how horrible, and try to glean some meaning from it all so you can learn and move on and all the while never hardening yourself to life or shying away from new experiences. This is the ideal situation and makes for a great movie of the week, but this is not realistic.

Often, a traumatic experience leaves a callous on the heart, a reminder and a warning. It may not always be noticeable, but the right word or gesture will irritate it enough to bring the painful memories and emotions to the surface. This is unfortunate, but it can also be considered handling it.

Sometimes, the worst thing imaginable happens. A callous would be welcome. Instead, there is a gaping hole in the heart that must be tiptoed around during every waking moment, knowing that one miss-step can mean plunging into the depths. A miserable existence, but it is a way of handling it.

I didn't mean this to be so depressing. It's just that I hear people say things when they think they should say something and usually what comes out is trite and meaningless. I try to resist the urge to give any advice, trite or otherwise.

There's more to a kitchen knife than a sharp edge. Look for these basics before you buy.

Handle
Is the handle a clunky piece of hardwood or a sleek piece of rosewood? Or do you prefer a synthetic handle, something a little more ergonomic? The choice can often be personal, and it's not simply a matter of price. Wood has a natural warmth, but actual shaping is limited by the process of mass production. Synthetic handles won't crack and often have the feel of custom-made cutlery. And you'll want to take the size of your hand into account: a small hand will quickly tire of a hefty handle.

Tang
The tang is the extension of the blade to which the handle is attached with rivets. If the tang doesn't pass through the entire handle, look for another knife--or start saving for an upgrade. The full tang is where you get the weight, balance, and stability of a high-quality knife. The best knife manufacturers use full tangs in all their knives, large and small.

Bolster
The thick piece of metal between the handle and the heel of the blade, particularly on French-style chef's knives, is also a shield between your fingers and the cutting edge. It's there for safety's sake, and it adds to the balance of the knife. A well-balanced, sharp knife is effortless to use. But not all styles of knives have--or demand--bolsters.

Blade
The size and shape of the blade help determine function. Boning a chicken with a chef's knife is probably how chicken nuggets were discovered. Select the right blade for the task at hand.

Construction
There's a reason that stamped blades are less expensive than forged blades: they are punched out of sheets of steel with knife-blade-shaped dies. High-end knives often lay claim to being hand-forged. This doesn't mean an Old World master craftsman worked the blade at a forge and anvil with a big hammer. Picture a factory laborer with a pair of tongs holding on to a hot piece of steel for the several blows of a 100-ton drop forge. There are, however, many steps in the process of making a high-quality knife, and in a couple of them you can count on some human intervention.

Blade Material

High-carbon stainless steel
Some of the best blades are made of either high-carbon steel or high-carbon stainless steel. The difference between the two kinds of steel is in the alloy, which must be at least 13% chromium to be rust- and stainproof high-carbon stainless steel. Companies such as Wüsthof, Henckels, Forschner, and Tramontina use high-carbon stainless.

High-carbon steel
High-carbon steel blades, on the other hand, will tarnish over time. But they take a better edge, and it's easier to maintain. The blade is also more flexible. But it does demand a certain amount of upkeep--wiping it dry after use, for example. Or washing it after cutting acidic produce such as onions. Sabatier uses high-carbon steel in some of its knives.

Types of Blades

Chef's knife
This is the kitchen workhorse--the main piece of steel--in lengths of 6, 8, and 10 inches for the most part. If you have a big hand, a 6-inch chef's knife will be an annoyance, while a small hand may quickly tire of a 10-inch blade. The blade of a chef's knife is designed to rock on a cutting board for tasks from chopping on down to mincing. The weight and balance of the blade work to your advantage. You can spend $25 to $130 for a good, commercially manufactured chef's knife.

Boning and fillet knives
These knives come in 5-, 6-, and 7-inch lengths. If you work with a lot of meat, poultry, and fish, you will want one of each. The fillet knife is long and straight, thin and flexible. Boning knives tend to have a curve to the blade, but can be either flexible or rigid. You use the flexible blade to bone poultry, the rigid boning blade to work around bigger bones. These knives cost between $10 and $65.

Paring and peeling knives
These are little knives you will reach for almost as often as you do your chef's knife. The peeler often has a hooking curve to the blade and is great for cutting zest from citrus fruit. You'll use small knives for any number of peeling, paring, and shaping chores, not to mention cutting the string after you have tied up the chicken for roasting. These run from 2 to 4-1/2 inches and $15 to $50.

Specialty blades
Cleavers, carving knives, serrated knives, Asian-style vegetable knives: these all have their right place and right time. The long, thin-bladed nature of a carving knife allows for perfect slicing of roasts or fowl. Serrated knives and crusty bread were made for each other. In fact, if you use your good chef's knife to slice crusty bread, you will ruin its edge.

Sharp Advice

Buy the best knives you can afford, and plan on using them for the rest of your life. Knife design has evolved over hundreds of years. If there's a flashy new kid on the block, ask yourself if the new design will stand up over time. Will it be comfortable? Is it necessary?

Knife Care

· Clean your knives after you use them.
· Store your knives in a knife block. Do not throw sharp knives into a drawer.
· Keep your knives out of the dishwasher. This protects the handle and the edge, and it protects your fingers when you aren't paying attention.
· Maintain a good edge with a steel edge.
· Teach your family basic knife skills.

I wonder why all the restroom doors open inside... meaning there is a handle inside the bathroom. (Maybe I am not aware of the ones that open by pushing from inside, so let me know if anybody sees it!) You have to wash your hands and then you have to pull a handle to open the door. I hope everybody washes their hands, but especially at a public restroom where they don't look so clean, I hate to touch the handle. I wonder if there is any regulations about which side the door has to open, but I wonder if the sanitation and user experience was considered for designing doors of public restrooms.
