We sent one of our graduate students, Josh Marshall, to Indianapolis a couple of weeks ago to shoot with one of the new Sony EX1 cameras. This was an extension of a project that Corey and I started last fall with the Internet Video and HD Studio Production classes. The students in these classes pitched ideas for short-form internet video series; eight of these pitches were selected for pilot production. One of these, Viva Ducati, was not finished by semester's end, but was nevertheless promising, and we had developed a good relationship with the website VivaDucati.com. This year for the first time ever a MotoGP event was to be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Viva Ducati had a group of folks going to the event and offered room, board, a ticket and hospitality suite at the track if we could send a student to shoot video. Seemed like a good trade, so we scraped up some bucks for airfare and sent Josh Marshall.

We've just received the unit (safely intact) with no dead or stuck pixels. The TV immediately discovered my satellite and my PS3 (after using the first HDMI input). There is an "auto" HDMI port (Input 7) that didn't like the PS3, but I haven't read the manual to see what the auto label means. We tried both Hellboy and PotC: Dead Man's Chest and they look absolutely stunning.

The TV is immense! I'd suggest that you sit no closer than 8 feet or you will notice the pixels. The remote is easy to use and back-lit. The only negative that isn't really mentioned anywhere is that the TV uses HDMI 1.2a instead of the current 1.3x. However, nothing is available that takes advantage of the new HDMI standard and it will probably be many years before it will be widely used.

I've also read that it's not quite as "fast" even with its 120Hz/4 ms rating. Not being a serious audio/video person, I haven't noticed any difference between my old 42" Plasma and this LCD in terms of display speed, so I haven't seen any indication of this. I've also played a few PS3 games and didn't notice any refresh issues. By the way, if you think movies look incredible on this LCD, you really need to see a computer/console game. Amazing!

Overall, this is really an excellent deal and should not be missed. I was initially worried about purchasing such a large item over the Internet, but Amazon has always delivered without problems. If you were thinking about a large DLP to get that "movie experience", I'd really consider this LCD instead as it is brighter, clearer, easy to move, and takes up less room. So, buy it already!

Popcorn Hour Box - PLAYS Hulu and Netflix on your TV

A brief history first ... I dropped cable about 8 months ago. Since then I have been getting video from a number of sources using technology.

I have multiple pc's on a wired gigabit network with a Dlink draft n router. I connect to a windows home server where I have 2 terabytes of storage. On the home server I store my digital DVD and TV show collection, my 5000+ mp3's, and bout 12 GB of photos. I also do back ups of the pc's.

In addition to the home server I have several external usb drives with digital media, 4 replaytv's loaded with recorded shows, a roku box for Netflix Movies and TV shows, (its rumored Roku will add Hulu and others soon) and a Netgear Digital Entertainer HD eva8000.

With the Netgear eva8000 I can play all the media on my windows Home server and any external usb drive I attach to the eva8000 directly to my HDTV with hdmi cables. The replay attaches directly to the tv and I can play any stored shows and also transfer the shows to a PC If I want.

The Netgear eva8000 is great ... it cost about$300, but there is another really awesome box called the Popcorn Hour (see the video review). Its about $200 and can do all that the eva8000 can plus a whole lot more. I ordered the popcorn hour a110 about a week ago ... demand is extremely high so there a a several week wait ... next shipment date is October 15th.

Chris Pirillo started a new social site called Geeks (similar in ways to facebook). So while I was waiting to get my Popcorn Hour Box I joined Geeks and started a group there called Popcorn Hour. The purpose was to get some tips from current Popcorn users and get the most out of my box when it arrived.

Well I answered a lot of my own questions while researching links to start discussions in the group. So far I have started 13 dicussions which all include detailed information, how to's, faq's, forums ...

Rather than repeating them all here I have included a link to the Popcorn Hour Group on Geeks. If you have the Popcorn hour I encourage you to add comments on the discussion threads there. Once I receive my box I will try to do a post including the unboxing all the way through to integration with my other video devices.

If you're looking for an LCD TV comparison, you're probably already in love with the idea of hanging a flat screen TV on your wall. It's really amazing how technology has progressed to the point where you can hang a big screen TV on your wall, then sit back and enjoy a fantastic HDTV picture of your favorite TV shows or sporting events.

Even more amazing is that as pictures have improved by leaps and bounds, the TVs have gotten thinner, and prices have plummeted. You know that any TV you choose is bound to net you a superb picture and slim form factor.

That being said, you know all the LCD TVs out there can't be the same, can they? Surely there must be some differences, right? Well, yes there are. There are a few things that some TVs do better than others and when making an LCD TV comparison, you should know how to find the differences. Although LCD TV prices have declined substantially in recent years, you want to be sure you're getting the most TV for your money, and the best one for your particular application.

One of the first things to think about is the physical size of the set. If it wasn't so common it would be funny, but people will often make or buy a cabinet, then try to find a TV to fit in the space allocated. Many times they're thwarted form going up to the next larger sized TV because one of the cabinet dimensions is an inch or so too small.

Take the time to choose your TV first, if you have the opportunity. This will also prevent you from designing or buying a cabinet for a particular TV, only to find it's been discontinued when it comes time to buy the TV.

The next thing is to look at some of the new LCD TVs with thin bezels. For example, this can allow you to fit a 40" TV where only a 37" set would fit before. Something to be aware of is that sometimes these extra thin bezel LCD TVs are deeper than their normal beveled cousins. If you're putting your new TV in a cabinet, this may not be a concern to you, but the extra 2" - 3" may make a big difference if you're hanging the set on a wall.

If the TV will fit where you'd like to put it, a check on picture quality is in order. After all your buying a new TV to watch it, and there are some ways you can compare the picture quality to determine which set has a better picture.

One problem with just looking at a set on the showroom floor is that rarely are all the TVs correctly adjusted for the best picture. Often they're shipped and set up in what the industry terms "torch mode". This is slang for having the settings adjusted to take advantage of most customer's preference for the brightest TV they see. If there are 10 TVs lined up, they'll gravitate toward the brightest one. In many cases the brightest TV is not the one with the best picture, especially if it has been adjusted to look artificially bright.

Most LCD TVs, especially 1080p sets, have more than enough brightness for any viewing situation, save putting the set in direct sunlight, but no brightness or contrast adjustment will save you there. The point is that looking at a TV in the showroom will often not provide you with an accurate representation of the set's available picture quality.

When shopping for an LCD TV, a 120Hz refresh rate is one feature that has gone a long way toward eliminating the motion artifact problems that used to be so prevalent in LCD televisions. It is common on most manufacturer's better LCD sets now and is known by many trade names.

Sharp has no trade name for their sets with the 120Hz feature, calling it just "120Hz frame rate conversion", Toshiba uses the moniker "ClearFrame™", Mitsubishi prefers "Smooth 120Hz™", and Sony's marketing department came up with "Motionflow™ 120Hz". It all means basically the same thing. Your LCD with this technology will look much better on fast moving images, like sports and scrolling text, than TVs without it.

If you're looking at one of the newest TVs, make sure they have plenty of inputs for connecting your BluRay player, cable box or satellite receiver, computer, or digital camcorder. In many instances, you will connect everything up to your surround sound receiver, then run a single cable to your TV.

For those not using a surround receiver, having plenty of inputs becomes vitally important. Make sure you have art least 3 HDMI inputs so you can get the best possible picture from HD digital video sources. A couple of component video inputs for older sources such as DVD players is a good idea as well.

Most new TVs have a digital tuner built in so you can connect an HDTV antenna and pick up signals broadcast over the air. Some TVs have what's called a QUAM tuner. This will allow you to get unencrypted digital cable programming. In many cases the cable company will broadcast local channels in full HDTV resolution "in the clear". That means they are not encrypted and you can watch them with no cable box, just the QUAM tuner built into your TV.

This will give some things to look for when comparing new LCD TVs. Whatever TV you decide to buy, you will get many years of enjoyment from your new set.

The Samsung A540 series takes the already stellar and highly praised A550 series lcd televisions and fixes a couple of reported problems with the units, most notably the matte screen which users were reporting much glare and reflection off of, and switching it up to the newer ‘Ultra Clear Panel’ released on some of Samsung’s newer and high end units. Most people would think that the number drop from 550 to 540 series would mean a downgrade to the latter, but actually the Samsung 540 series units are the same thing with a few upgrades, why they didn’t name it the A560 series is a mystery. The Samsung 540 series also boasts a 35,000:1 contrast ratio over the 30,000:1 contrast of the slightly older A550 units. But is the difference really worth the $200 premium is the question? Many users and people that have seen them side beside state that the 540 vs. the 550 really gives the A540 the upper hand, with the new panel and semi-matte really making a big difference combined with the 550. The contrast ratio, although when broken down into the math (15%+ better) shouldn’t really be such a big factor for the average person, although difference in favor of the 540 is noted although not very profound. So it basically comes down to a person-person basis; are you a power user that will be watching your television a lot? Gaming and the latest in High Definition? Go for the A540 and spend the extra bucks most would agree... but if its just a home television and your going to be watching SD cable programming with the occasional DVD movie – go with the cheaper and proven LNA550 option while pocketing a couple extra hundred dollars.

Differences between LNA540 and LNA550 LCDs:

A540 – 35,000 to 1 Contrast ratio… A550 – 30,000 to 1 contrast ratio
A540 – Ultra Clear panel = reduced glare and reflection, A550 – Glossy screen looks nicer but causes problems with lighting and viewing angles/reflections

ViewSonic shows off a 120Hz LCD computer display

NVIDIA's NVISION conference kicked off without too many announcements today, but ViewSonic was making some waves with a prototype 120Hz LCD display that it says brings HDTV-level motion and crispness to the desktop without sacrificing resolution. The 1680 x 1050 22-inch monitor will eventually hit as the VX2265wm, with dual-link DVI inputs, stereoscopic 3D support, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 3ms response time, and 4-watt speakers -- hopefully we'll get an official price and ship date soon.
