Se pensate che a livello musicale la Nuova Zelanda possa regalarci solo la haka eseguita dalla squadra di rugby prima delle partite vi sbagliate. La smentita arriva da un promettente duo twee pop di Auckland, composto da Heather Mansfield e Jonathan Bree, che si è guadagnato la notorietà aprendo i live di altri gruppi, tra cui Architecture in Helsinki e The Shins (guarda qui).

Questo terzo album, in cui la voce maschile e quella femminile si alternano in perfetta armonia, è una struttura dal make-up raffinato e morbido: suoni sospesi tra sogno e realtà, sfumature elettroniche e psichedeliche, incursioni strumentali dal sapore quasi ancestrale.

L'intro di tastiera in Her Hairagami set si fonde con la voce di Heather che elenca vari stili di acconciatura, come il "claw clip", "french twist" e "scrunchie"."Doesn't she look a million with her hairagami set", sospira Jonathan, nostalgico ed evanescente. Il tintinnio di uno xilofono ci accompagna fino alla fine della canzone e ci proietta in uno spazio siderale.

I might be able to get to Whelans on Sunday for Dan Deacon though.  A local boy for me- he is from Baltimore but I wouldn't usually say that too loud since I never liked the place.   Just not sure if his music is just that bit too eclectic....coming from me that is saying a lot!

The Brunettes, à l’origine duo marital venu d’Auckland, ne pourra contredire cette affirmation: leur musique va droit au coeur. Ainsi, depuis 1998, Jonathan Bree et Heather Mansfield mêlent adroitement ambiances douces-amères, électro légère et pop juvénile. Le label Sub Pop ne s’y trompera pas: ce groupe à du génie, comme le montre “Structure and Cosmetics”, leur nouvel album à paraître en novembre 2007 grâce au label de Seattle. Voici, une occasion de découvrir l’univers fantasque de ces kiwis!
