Greta rivela informazioni disturbanti sulla notte in cui Eddie è morto, e Johnny scopre che la madre di Eddie vive ancora nella zona, così decide di farle visita. Nel frattempo, Cliff fa di tutto per far si che la madre rompa col suo nuovo ragazzo approfittatore e Nikki si avvicina sempre di più a Cliff.

Hidden Palms,  ovvero l’erede mancata di The O.C per morte prematura. Così l’hanno soprannominata le campagne promozionali nostrane, ma a dir la verità non ha nulla a che vedere col patinato teen drama di culto (salvo la comune presenza del giovane Michael Cassidy, lo Zach di Orange County che ora ha i capelli corti e si chiama Cliff). Se Oc lasciava tutto in superficie, stemperando il dramma con l’ironia scacciapensieri dei Cohen, Hidden Palms rivendica la propria tendenza mystery alla Veronica Mars, condendola con un pizzico di intrigo alla Desperate Housewives.

E’ una soap per giovani e i suoi protagonisti si stagliano sulla scena con tutta la lora problematicità ma al contempo una buona dose di magnetismo. Raidue ha iniziato a programmarla da ieri, riservandole la collocazione del sabato pomeriggio alle 15.50. E ancora una volta - non per voler fare le pulci ai responsabili dei palinsesti - la programmazione è del tutto fuorviante. Giorgio Buscaglia, factotum della serialità di Raidue, si era già giustificato a tal proposito in occasione del Telefilm Festival, anticipando l’esigenza di una censura.

Hidden Palms, infatti, è tutto incentrato sul giovane Johnny Miller (Taylor Handley), che esce dalla riabilitazione dopo essere divenuto alcolista in seguito al suicidio del padre. Forse un unico particolare differenzia questa serie dai soliti psicodrammi adolescenziali: il genitore si spara un colpo in testa sull’uscio della stanza del figlio, che lo vede accasciarsi a terra inerme.

La visione del sangue, effettivamente, è un po’ forte per un pubblico pomeridiano, ma resta il fatto che il resto del pilot assume toni più spensierati e distesi. Così Raidue, come promesso da Buscaglia, ha ripulito l’unica scena forte che poteva generare polemiche, trasformando il resto del prodotto in qualcosa di adatto al pomeriggio. Se la foto a sinistra è un po’ l’emblema di come Raidue voglia spacciarcelo per tappabuchi estivo, ovvero una sorta di Falcon Beach senza pretese, dopo il salto pubblichiamo i fotogrammi censurati in Italia (se ne consiglia la visione ad un pubblico non impressionabile):

Zac, il taglio netto è stato compiuto e chi ha visto la prima scena in lingua originale si sarà posto subito una domanda: non sarà che, senza quell’esordio traumatico, a Hidden Palms è stata tolta la ragione di esistere, nonché la maledizione stessa del suo lapidario destino?

La storia dei teen drama ci ha abituato a vedere una come Marissa morire alla fine della terza stagione, dopo una vita scapestrata ma apparentemente ordinaria. Lo stesso Dawson’s Creek, replicato tra l’altro da qualche giorno su Fox, ha aspettato la quinta stagione per far vivere al suo eroe sognatore la terribile perdita del padre. Johnny, invece, ancor prima di essere un ragazzo come tutti gli altri, è uno che ha visto la morte del papà in faccia e solo un anno dopo può voltare le pagine sulle note di Rehab della Winehouse (furbissima strategia commerciale che lascia il tempo che trova).

Qual è il senso di tutto questo interrogarsi? Che Hidden Palms, su The CW, è arrivato appena all’ottava puntata per bassi ascolti, a causa di una collocazione penalizzante. Tutto questo nonostante la preziosa scrittura di Kevin Williamson, che ha portato a battesimo l’indimenticato Dawson’s Creek trasferendo in Hidden Palms lo stesso amore per il citazionismo e l’esistenzialismo.

Lo stesso attore, Taylor Handley, non è solo il belloccio della situazione, con la faccia d’angelo alla Di Caprio e il look stilizzato alla Zac Efron. Il suo volto, oltre a piacere, esprime un non so che di irrisolto proprio come questa serie. E’ come se Hidden Palms avesse grandi potenzialità, stroncate oltreoceano dalla sua morte prematura e in Italia da una confezione che ne ha completamente tradito il senso.

Se alla censura ci aggiungiamo un doppiaggio troppo rassicurante e una collocazione vacanziera, qualsiasi velleità riflessiva va a farsi un bagno, senza che il riflesso delle onde della piscina rivelino il loro mistero più inquietante. Che è un po’ il destino di quelle Casalinghe Disperate mai capite da noi fino in fondo.

Il giovane Johnny esce dalla riabilitazione dopo essere divenuto alcolista a seguito del suicidio del padre e si trasferisce con la madre e il patrigno presso l’idilliaca Palm Springs per scoprire tutto questo nuovo mondo non è pacifico come sembra. Nell’apri, Johnny Miller familiarizza con i suoi vicini non convenzionali, Greta, una bellezza misteriosa, Cliff, uno studente affascinante della High School con un lato scuro spaventoso. Johnny inoltre scopre che il ragazzo che precedentemente ha vissuto nella sua stanza è morto tragicamente.

Apesar de ter sido cancelada após oito episódios, Hidden Palms conquistou-me.

Se eu vos disser que vi a série toda hoje, acreditam? Pois é melhor acreditarem mesmo, porque eu comecei a ver a série depois do almoço e terminei à pouco tempo de ver. São oito episódio repletos de suspense, romance, vida adolescente, bebidas, assassinatos... Em Palm Springs vê-se de tudo.

Quem gostou de The O.C. não pode perder essa série. Muitos actores da série teen mais aclamada dos últimos anos estão de volta em Hidden Palms.

A série conta a história de um rapaz, Johnny, que assiste ao suicídio do seu pai. Um ano depois, Johnny, a mãe e o padrasto mudam-se para Palm Springs, um cidade onde as festas e o golfe presidem.

Tudo corria bem até que Johnny descobre que dorme num quarto em que o ex-namorado da sua agora amada, Greta, suicidou-se lá. Pelo menos era o que se pensava no início...

Ao longo dos oito episódio, percebemos que Eddie, o suposto suicida, não se suicidou, mas sim foi assassinado. A grande pergunta era "Quem é o assassino?".

Muitas pistas vão-se desenvolvendo e criam um suspense agradável de se ver. Apesar do guião se perder um bocado do objectivo principal, esta série soube cativar (pelo menos a mim soube). A cena final de cada episódio deixava sempre alguma pergunta no ar... talvez inquietação.

As interpretações foram excelentes! Gostei da interpretação de Sharon Lawrence no papel de Tess Wiatt, uma mulher em que a sua preocupação com a sua imagem remete a um humor característico das mulheres da sua idade.

Na série aprendemos a desconfiar de todos, (eu particularmente desconfiei mais do Cliff, filho de Tess e namorado de Nikki, colega de Johnny). Ele estava em todo o lado, fosse em casa de Liza, Greta ou Johnny. Liza era uma rapariga comum que comunica a Johnny que Eddie foi assassinado.

O facto de Johnny ter visto o suicídio do pai, despertou-lhe o sentimento de que tinha de descobrir a verdade acerca da misteriosa morte de Eddie, e descobre...

No fim, (SPOILER - Sublinhe para ler) Johnny descobre que, depois de Maria (mãe de Eddie) se ter suicidado, foi o pai de Greta a matar Eddie, isto porque Eddie descobriu que a sua mãe e Skip (pai de Greta) andavam juntos...

Apesar da série ter um fim pouco completo, pois só Johnny sabe quem é o verdadeiro assassino e este não é preso, Hidden Palms entretém e eu recomendo a série para quem quiser tapar o buraco deixado pela perda de The O.C.. E só mais uma coisa: A banda sonora é fabulosa!

1. Across The Universe
Sad that I would consider this the best movie of the year, since it wasn't that great. The soundtrack was very, very good and the cast consisted of very talented people, but that's it.

2. My Blueberry Nights
I almost feel like I should've spent more time watching movies this year, but I kinda lost my faith in the movie industry. After the first few seconds of this movie, I knew it would end up on this list, considering what else is on here. Wong Kar Wai does what he does. Jude Law is not completely annoying. Norah Jones is a decent actress. Natalie Portman is very awesome (but you knew that). Storyline is the typical "we're fucked up, but that's beautiful"... but less pretentious.

3. Hors De Prix
This came out last year in France, but only came out in theatres this year in Quebec... and this is how desperate I am to actually have decent movies on my list. I was kind of skeptical about Audrey Tautou, but Gad Elmaleh made this movie OMG-so-awesome-and-funny.

4. Good Luck Chuck
Yes, this movie is here... because I laughed like a fucking maniac during this movie. I fucking hate Dane Cook, but the fact that I wasn't bored and didn't fall asleep through this makes it worth the mention. Much, much funnier than Knocked Up.

5. 2 Days In Paris
Julie Delpy wrote and directed this. She's very talented that one, she even sings on the soundtrack. This movie is exactly what you'd expect. I wish we could've gotten a more concrete ending, though, but what else were you expecting?

6. In The Land Of Women
Adam Brody, I admit, is the reason why I watched this movie. I thought it would be an awesome movie to poke fun at for 90 minutes but, surprisingly, it was a lot deeper than I'd imagine. It fails at leaving an impression on you, but it's worth the watch.

7. Highway Star
My favorite Korean movie this year? I haven't seen very many as I mostly focused on drama this year, but most movies were those offbeat gangsta ones and I much prefer their romcoms or arty movies à la Kim Ki Duk... I never very much liked Cha Tae Hyun despite My Sassy Girl being one my favorite movies, but this movie completely sold me on him.

8. Because I Said So
I liked this movie a lot... who would've thought? I don't remember much about it, but my mind comes back to it sometimes...

9. Juno
I love Ellen Page and the soundtrack to this movie. And that's pretty much it.

10. Premonition
I lost faith in Sandra Bullock movies, but this wasn't terribly bad (à la Hope Floats and Speed 2) and it was paced well.

(yes, I have terrible taste in movies... I guess I haven't been pretentious enough this year)

1. Kelly Clarkson - AOL Session
I have absolutely loved this session, as it bring out everything that's worth listening to on her last album. Her voice is flawless.

2. The Bravery - The Sun and The Moon
This album took me entirely by surprise, as I never thought in a million years that I'd like The Bravery, but after I heard "Believe" on Gossip Girl, I was entirely sold on this band. My favorite kind of albums are the "long summer drive" ones like Boomkat's Boomkatalog.One and this is exactly what you get.

3. Emery - I'm Only A Man
I denied this album at first, but it's quite well-crafted and holds a lot of variety.

4. Across The Universe soundtrack (deluxe edition)
All the covers are quite exquisite, and what can I say, I have a huge weakness for Beatles cover.

5. Tegan and Sara - The Con
They get better with each album, and that's pretty much it. You get exactly what you expect and maybe a little more.

They reissued this album this year, and I listened to it after seeing them live at ConU... The first time I heard this song, it just started following me around everywhere.

2. Justin Timberlake - What Goes Around
Somehow I can't get enough of this song, no matter how much I listen to it. It was love at first note, and I'm not afraid to admit that I'm entirely in love with this song.

3. The Bravery - Believe
Love at first note again... what can I say. Sometimes you fall in love and you can't go back.

4. The All-American Rejetcs - It Ends Tonight
This used to play at Quiznos all the time. One day I heard it on the radio and remembered liking the song. So I took a closer listen and it was like electricity coursing through my head. Who would've thought I'd like this song? The video is an awesome companion.

5. Mega Bass - Blind
Hidden Palms was cancelled faster than you can say "who is Tyler Handley" but what I'll never forget is this the theme song... like a long summer drive.....

Essas cidades são mesmo parecidas: a Beverly Hills de Barrados no Baile, a Capeside de Dawson's Creek, a Orange County, de The O.C. e... a Palm Springs da recém-lançada Hidden Palms. Coisas dessa gente bonita que pedimos tanto pra se ter nas nossas baladas. Pois elas povoam as séries teens da TV americana.

Hidden Palms é a volta de Kevin Williamson a TV, após o fim de Dawson's Creek e com a variação de um mesmo tema. Johnny (Taylor Handley, meio James Van Der Beek, um rosto diferente dos caucasianos médios) vê o pai se matar, no primeiro take do drama. Salto para Palm Springs e a chegada de um forasteiro que vai conquistando a vizinhança, com duas opções de garotas para os roteristas brincarem por várias temporadas. Williamson ainda importa sub-tramas de suspense, algo mais ou menos novo em séries teens, mas que ele sabe desenvolver bem, como em seus sucessos de cinema (Pânico, Eu Sei o Que Vocês Fizeram no Verão Passado).

A série tem tudo para emplacar, se imaginarmos que esse tipo de drama não precisa de grandes sacadas de roteiro. A garotada quer é idealizar a vida de luxo e paqueras. Williamson só faz diferente, na medida que cede espaço aos losers. Não era assim, na precursora Barrados no Baile. Em Dawson's, a melhor dessas séries, brilhava o cara recolhido e com dilemas mais legítimos, o cara quase órfão de Joshua Jackson (daí, muito próximo do Luke Perry), o cara gay (que deu o primeiro beijo gay teen da TV), e a moreninha virando mulher (...do Tom Cruise).

Hidden Palms ainda tem a vantagem de correr sozinha, no verão norte-americana. Por Williamson, vale uma espiada.

NEW SERIES Take the creator of Dawson’s Creek, add a minor star of The OC, simmer gently in the LA sun, and you get this script-light, style-heavy teen drama with the improbably coiffed Taylor Handley as an angst-ridden young man reeling from his father’s suicide who becomes obsessed with the mysterious death of one of his peers.

9.00, The Sarah Silverman Programme, Paramount
NEW SERIES Dark humour with comedian Sarah starring as a deeply unpleasant fictionalised version of herself. Well at least that’s what she says...

9.00, Crime Invasion: Britain's New Underworld, Virgin 1
NEW SERIES The title’s a tad sensationalist, but sometime BBC foreign correspondent Rageh Omaar usually gives good value for money so this might actually have some useful insights.

The Life & Times of Vivienne Vyle, Thursday 9pm, BBC2

Jennifer Saunders (who I generally enjoy) stars as a talkshow host planning to retire after a series of mishaps but lured back by superb viewer ratings. Vivienne Vyle... Jeremy Kyle... hmm. Should be fun, especially with talkshow titles like; 'I want a vagina, but can't kick the crack...'.

Hidden Palms, Thursday 9pm, Sky One

Gah, it's The OC's crazy Oliver. And he's had highlights! A dark teen series that lasted 8 episodes in the US. Which could mean its good! Or could mean it really, really isnt'!

And Sam, what does he think about this television for the week?

The Riches, Monday 10pm, Virgin 1

He of the monkeys on tables and trees Eddie Izzard joins Minnie Driver for Virgin One's launch night in a comedy drama from US network FX. Izzard and Driver are a couple of grifters who decide to give up their travelling ways and live a normal life.

Heroes, Wednesday 9pm, BBC2

The entertaining if never truly great Heroes continues over here and Christopher Eccleston brings some need gravitas to proceedings as an invisible, surly gent who like pigeons.

But the question is, with both sterling heads put together, what do we insist you all watch this week?

Answer: Stephen Fry: HIV & Me, Tuesday 9pm, BBC2

If you saw Fry's documentary on manic depression not so long ago, you'll know why we're making this a must see. His approachability and charisma push these programmes into the social conscious, and that can only be a good thing when he's bringing attention to such important subjects. Stephen Fry is the gentle God of our times. All hail the Fry!!

If you'd also like a guilty weekend pleasure, then check out TMi on BBC2 at 9am on Saturday. Grab a cup of tea, a bagel or piece of toast, and check out the new Ant and Dec, Sam & Mark, being deeply silly. Even if you hate it, you'll feel better about the day.

L'attore è stato ingaggiato dalla CW per il ruolo del redattore del Daily Planet, e probabilmente sarà l'interesse amoroso di Lois Lane. Dopo la chiusura di Hidden Palms, dovuta ai scarsi ascolti, il cast del telefilm sarà riposizionato in altri programmi targati CW...Vedremo cosa accadrà :P

Johnny shows up at Liza"s garagabatory, spinning his wheels about exactly how guilty Maria and Skip are. He seems to believe that, had Skip simply killed Eddie, Maria wouldn"t be blackmailing him, which means Maria must have done something. Meanwhile, it looks like Tess has spent the whole night staring at her sleeping son and letting the cigarettes burn down to her fingers. Cliff cannily "explains" his and Maria"s affair, making sure to couch Maria in the most predatory and betraying light possible, which totally gets Tess back on his side. Back at her place, Maria watches video on a laptop of Eddie tearfully telling his video diary that "my mom knows I know," followed by Maria walking in on him. They start to argue, but Maria shuts the laptop before we see anything illuminating.

Nikki"s waitressing at the Club now, because it is the number one and indeed only employer in Palm Springs, and she has to ward off Cliff"s attempts at an apology. And since Johnny currently suspects Maria of killing Eddie, he"s cool with Cliff again, and Cliff agrees to try and score Eddie"s laptop -- which Johnny believes holds incriminating video diaries -- in exchange for Johnny putting in a good word for him with Nikki. Greta voices her suspicions about Maria to Skip, who changes the subject by turning it into another round of Greta And Skip Sing "Papa Was A Rolling Stone."

Karen"s been stress baking due to her ongoing fight with Bob, and she and Johnny reverse roles, with Johnny now being the calm pro-Bob voice and Karen refusing to shut up about Johnny"s dad. Cliff tries for a grand gesture of roses, but Nikki cuts him down before he can get the charm levels above sixty. Though she can"t seem to stop staring at him as he walks away either. Turns out Cliff was walking over to Maria"s table on the patio. He half-heartedly tries to romance her, but they"re interrupted by Tess. That"s Palm Springs for you. Can"t even seduce your dead best friend"s mom without getting cock-blocked by your own mom. Maria defends herself to Tess with a line of "you don"t know what I"ve been though" bullshit about Eddie, even though Eddie was perfectly alive when the affair started. Tess says she pities Maria, and Maria tells her to shove it.

While Johnny and Greta are busy awkwardly making out so as to avoid talking about whether Skip and Maria were doing it (seriously), Cliff shows up at Maria"s house ready for some half-hearted and depressing nookie. While she"s fetching him a robe, Cliff snoops around for Eddie"s laptop, and rather than just hightailing it out of there with it, he opens it and starts fishing around on it like a total moron. He discovers Eddie"s creepy and sad comprehensive video library of his entire life, but before he can play any of the clips, Maria shuts him down and screams at him to get out. So now Cliff voices his suspicions to Johnny -- in a manic, overly-wordy diatribe that could only have been penned by Williamson -- that "Psycho Maria" really might have done something. Next thing we know, Johnny"s riding his bike to the Club when he runs into Dead-Eyed Maria, who wants to know why Johnny"s so obsessed about finding out about her kid. Johnny repeats the stuff about his dad"s suicide and also the Divine Right of Bedrooms stuff that always sounds so stupid. Dead-Eyed Maria looks like she left her last shreds of sanity in her other pants, by the way.

True to his word, Johnny tries to upsell Nikki on Cliff while she works at what appears to be the Club"s soda shop. That place is like the Mall of America, I swear. While Nikki continues to blunder about her new job, Johnny shares his latest suspicions to Liza, who is immediately very much in favor of retrieving Eddie"s laptop.

Skip shows up poolside at Maria"s house to menace her about her blackmailing him and sleeping with Cliff. Maria, falling apart more and more, cries that she and Skip are in this together -- that she sacrificed everything, including her son, to be with him. But Skip has nothing but contempt for Maria, and -- manhandling her and nearly choking her out -- he tells her to pack up her shit and leave Palm Springs. The next day, Skip sees Johnny by the docks on the outskirts of town...no wait, it"s at the country club. Sorry. Anyway, Skip tries to convince Johnny to drop the whole investigation into Eddie"s death on account of it not being good for Greta to dwell on such dark thoughts. This, along with the fact that Skip outs himself as Maria"s lawyer, makes Johnny even more suspicious, because he"s not that much of an idiot, right? No, in fact Johnny is that much of an idiot. He tells Liza that Skip being Maria"s lawyer makes him less likely to be guilty of something. The "why"s and "how come"s of that scenario will only make your head hurt so don"t bother.

Nikki, meanwhile, can"t seem to serve ice water without grandly fucking it up, so distracted is she by thoughts of Cliff. This leads to Jessie Jo trying to help Nikki pull it together and getting the absolute line of the night, and probably of the series: "We can"t kill him, girl. He lives here." He does his usual twang-talkin" hoodoo that he does and convinces Nikki to keep on taking it one day at a time or whatever the twelve-steppers like to say.

Liza reads Johnny the riot act for essentially choosing Greta over the truth, and Johnny fires back that he knows Liza slept with Eddie the night he died. Johnny thinks they all need to forget about this and get on with their lives. In about fifteen minutes, kid. Liza vows to find the proof that Maria killed Eddie, with or without Johnny.

Karen and Bob...still cannot make anyone care about their storyline. Nikki, however, decides to give Cliff a second chance, because those sociopaths still do manage to be wildly appealing sometimes.

Liza breaks into Casa Nolan to try to retrieve Eddie"s laptop, but in the dark, she literally trips over Maria"s dead body. She has a gun in her hand, so it"s apparently a suicide, though is it ever really suicide in Palm Springs? Liza calls Johnny, who shows up after the police have arrived, and right before Greta. Liza thinks this proves that Maria was the one who killed Eddie, and she collapses, crying, onto Greta"s shoulder.

To the strains of Coldplay -- actual Coldplay this time, and not the knockoff Coldplay that"s usually heard at this stage of the episode -- all of Palm Springs, including Tess, Cliff, and Nikki, show up to gape at Maria"s crime scene. Nobody seems to notice Skip make off with Eddie"s laptop. Cliff actually expresses concern over another human being, asking Johnny if this helps him get closure on his dad"s death. Johnny"s too busy reminding himself to inhale and exhale to respond.

Later on, Greta expresses her gratitude for her newfound peace of mind about Eddie"s death to Johnny. She sees Johnny out and then has an insincere moment of closure with Skip, who"s as squirrelly as you please, placing a framed photo of Greta"s mom on the table. Johnny gets home and sees the email message he didn"t have time to read when Liza called. Coldplay helpfully shuts up so we can devote all our concentration to this last-second plot twist. The email is from Maria, right before she died, and it"s a video clip of Eddie confronting Maria and Skip. Eddie accuses them both of killing Greta"s mother and says he"s going to tell Greta. Skip has a gun, he and Eddie struggle, and Eddie gets shot. DUN! Over! We can only hope Skip decided to kill Greta as a way of tying up loose ends after the show ended. Farewell, Hidden Palms. You were kind of interesting for a second there.

Anyway, what a great (series) finale, right? We got the main question, who killed Eddie, answered, and I must say I have really enjoyed speculating about that one. I'm glad we got an answer. I really want a second season, because they ended things with the possibility that it might continue, and I really, really wish to see what happens to these characters. Take Liza, for example, she is an interesting character and I feel like her story would be cool to follow, and also explore her true relationship with Eddie. That scene where Liza learns how to put on make up from an Internet site was fun, and that's the kind of Liza I would have liked to get to know better. Another person I wish to get to know more is Cliff, I still wonder why he acted so psycho around Liza that night when he knew she had been snooping around. he must be guilty of something!

Skip killed Eddie, but it looked like it was an accident. Good thing Eddie recorded everything he did, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to see how the murder really happened. The question we was left with though, did Skip murder his first wife too, AND now Maria Nolan?? That is something we can only speculate about, but don't you agree that a second season is needed?

And you know what the first thing I thought was gonna happen to Johnny after we found out he had been in rehab and was now sober? That he was gonna start drinking again. I know that it would probably have happened if this show had continued for more seasons, but I kinda expected it to happen in this season. I'm glad it didn't though. We have enough celebrities who get out of rehab and immediately start drinking again, it's great to see at least one person actually being strong enough.

I wanna thank the CW for giving us this exciting series to watch during the summer, it has been a pleasure to watch each episode, but at the same time I hate the CW for cancelling so many good shows and for airing two episodes a night of this wonderful show. They killed the show. I doubt they'll renew it, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
