Steve Jobs talvez não perca o sono por conta de celulares que imitam o iPhone, mas marcas chinesas legítimas como a Ningbo Bird estão incomodadas com os modelos falsos, no mundo de feroz competição entre os fabricantes de celulares de baixo preço.

A China é o maior mercado mundial de celulares, mas marcas domésticas como a Ningbo Bird e a Amoi vêm enfrentando dificuldades em meio à intensa concorrência de preços de rivais locais, entre os quais alguns que se especializam em modelos derivativos, depois de perder a posição dominante que detinham no mercado para fabricantes estrangeiros.

"Um usuário da Nokia não seria meu cliente, mas os compradores de aparelhos Ningbo Bird estão ansiosos para experimentar meus produtos", disse Fu Jiangang, proprietário de um site que vende celulares piratas e não registrados.

Fu agora está pensando em atualizar o seu Hiphone, uma imitação escancarada do popular iPhone, da Apple, mas vendida a uma fração do preço do original.

Em quatro pequenas linhas de montagem controladas por um sócio na cidade de Shenzhen, um pólo econômico chinês, Fu responde pela produção de centenas de aparelhos por mês, e seu público-alvo são os agricultores, os trabalhadores migrantes e outros usuários de baixa renda, para expandir sua rede de vendas.

"Não se pode esperar que um agricultor com renda de 10 mil iuans por ano compre um celular de cinco mil iuans", disse Fu. "Mas o agricultor quer um celular que pareça moderno e possa tirar fotos e tocar música."

Os produtos dele concorrem com os da Ningbo Bird e de diversos outros fabricantes chineses, tais como Konka e Lenovo, pela faixa de mais baixo preço no mercado.

A Ningbo Bird anunciou prejuízo de 34 milhões de iuans (4,94 milhões de dólares) no primeiro trimestre, mencionando a feroz concorrência no mercado local, que ela dominava até recentemente.

A Nokia hoje lidera o mercado chinês, e cinco fabricantes estrangeiros detém quase 70 por cento do mercado de celulares do país, de acordo com o grupo de pesquisa Analysis International.

Somente em Shenzhen, de acordo com dados oficiais, há mais de 600 fabricantes de celulares e 3.000 fornecedores de componentes.

"Nos últimos dois anos, testemunhamos o surgimento de nomes desconhecidos como K-touch e a queda de marcas tradicionais como Ningbo Bird", disse Jiang Lifeng, analista da consultoria chinesa CCID.

Pros:

Excellent phone, lots of fun to play around with. Certainly a great hobbyist gadget, but also a reliable cellphone+player within its GSM reception capacity.
Flashy and good wow factor for your friends (especially when you tell them how much it cost you). Set up your own animated gif and mp3 as a ringtone per contact (if you want), very easy to use.
Excellent ability to just turn of the phone and plug it into your xp, vista, or linux machine and be seen as a external HDD. The CECT P168 is equipped with features that work very well. I use the "to do list", calculator, alarm clock, mp3 player, and others on a daily basis.
Excellent playback on mp3 audio files and mp4 videos (if encoded correctly). Upgrade to 2gb memory easily with a TF flash card. Two batteries, with dual AC charger: charge the second battery and the phone at the same time.
Very good GSM 850/900/1800/1900 reception. Overall usage is easy (once setup), supports dual SIM cards (not both online same time, just both inside but easy switch). It's not locked, there is some really good iTunes alternative freeware out there, and it is certainly not APPLE.

There is an increasing nunmber of users with this phone that are pushing to add games, change the themes and basically modify the operating system and file system to give the phone extra functionality. One recent breakthrough was the discovery of some software that can convert a TXT file into the dzd ebook format that the P168 phone uses. I can see a huge number of mods and tweaks coming along, one of the main areas people are looking at is the ability of being able to upload more java games onto the phone. What a great hobbyist phone this is, and many people are interested in playing around with it. The head phones are just average, but you can remove the adapter. With a little soldering, you can mod them to work on high quality headphones for spectacular sound.

Cons:

Fixed system font. No manufacturer support - not clear where to get updates/patches/upgrades/additional soft.
Screen resolution - could be higher. Non standard earphone connection. No EU AC charger plug; European customers must use a flat to round plug adapter.
FTP Bluetooth profile does not work, and there is no A2DP Bluetooth profile supported with video player. Web browser non standard and both WAP GPRS settings are difficult to enter.
At this time, no JAVA, and the current OS is unknown, but not a standard OS such as Linux, WM6, Symbian or PalmOS. Email doesn't support SSL, so won't work with GMail and some others,
No WIFI and the phone is quad-band
The Bottom Line:

The P168 is a unique excellent value touchscreen multimedia GSM phone, but clearly not an iphone clone or a smartphone. It is a Dual-Sim quad-Band phone with GSM 850,900, 1800, 1900 band. Overall you get your money's worth with this phone, highly highly recomended.
