In my continual quest for the perfect fish, I consult the masters. This little guy jumped out of Hokusai's pond. Or was it Hiroshige's (is there an art historian in the house?) -- well, out of the pond of one of those great old Japanese guys. The old master was playing some scales. Obviously he loved this fish's scales -- those beautiful scales rendered into refined patterns.

The Delicious, 4 guys from Indiana, bring us a song named after a 19th century japanese printmaker. Interesting.
Not too long, not too short "Hokusai" is fun, frantic pop with a hint of Hot Hot Heat.
On a side note, I adore them for adding 'of Montreal' as an influence on their MySpace profile... even though they capitalized that infamously lowercase 'O'...

Last friday, I left on a trip to New Jersey from school for Rider Cup, and along the way, we stopped at the Porter Exchange. The Porter Exchange is the ground level of a Lesley University building in Caimbridge. There are lots of japanese stores. I saw a Shiseido salon (!!! I love hair), a japanese bakery (I got a cream puff after watching too much Absolute Boyfriend), a japanese merchandise store (kimonos, t-shirts, tea sets, oriental papers, etc.), lots of ramen stores/noodle shops, and there were a few others that we didn't have the time to go look in. Best of all, was Kotobukiya - a Japanese mart. I got so many good things there:

Gatsby Moving Rubber Nuance Motion

Almond Crush Pocky

Chocolate Desert Pocky

Hazelnut Pocky (I think)

and the Original Choco Pocky!! then...

Mango, Grape, and Green Apple HiChew

Marukawa Chewing Gum 7 Pack

and (of course) Katsushika Hokusai chopsticks with "The Great Wave of Kanagawa" image on them. I got them in order to celebrate my completed recreation of the great wave print for a school project. (painting that thing was HARD)

I have no idea what the frog flavor is.

Yes!!!! I finally got Gatsby!!!! I was so happy - I've been looking for some Gatsby product for months now, and I finally found it! So excited to use it!! (I love hair, cutting hair, and styling hair. especially VK styles). Anyhoo, I'm so stereotypical with my selection of Pocky and HiChew. But, now I don't have to ask my asian friends for them, so it's all good. I saw tons of magazines in Kotobukiya, too - the King from Ikebukuro West Gate Park was an the cover of one - I was so proud of myself for recognising him!!! Ah! I should have looked for an AnAn issue. Or Shoxx. I also wanted to try the riceballs a Next time I go, we'll spend the day. (hopefully)

This post is for my buddy Binh, who a few weeks ago, noticed this print while we were eating sushi at Ichiban one night. (As always, you can click on the image for a closer look.)

Binh asked me if I knew who did it and I had no idea; I assumed it was anonymous. You see it everywhere, so it's not even something you think about.

It turns out, that this painting was done by the incredibly talented (and prolific) Japanese painter Hokusai, pronounced "Hawkseye." The name of the print is, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa."

The only reason I know any of this is because of Cartoon Brew, where they had a post about the short film, "Hokusai-An Animated Sketchbook" done by animator Tony White. White is a British Academy Award winner and the film is terrific; be sure to check it out.

And you know, I must have seen this image a thousand times and never noticed the boats before. And, just look at that sea spray. Do you see Mt. Fuji in the background? It took this Wikipedia article to point it out to me.

If you're half as geeky as I am, you can continue to delve even deeper into Hokusai, here.

I love the internet.

Adios.

From Mike Shinoda's exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum to the Hello Kitty exhibit in St. Louis to Gajin Fujita's graffiti exhibit in London, there has been a plethora of cool stuff happening around the globe. Well, there's more to come.

The Brooklyn Museum in New York is home to the latest art show that the Hawaii Herald wants to direct you to. The exhibit Japonisme in American Graphic Art, 1880–1920 "explores the myriad manifestations of Japonisme in a selection of rarely seen American works on paper from the Brooklyn Museum’s permanent collection. Concurrent with the so-called 'Japan craze' in America was a renewed interest in graphic arts: as watercolor, pastel, etching, and other graphic media came to be appreciated for their artistry and expressivity, they also reflected the impact of Japanese art."

As if that weren't enough, the Japonisme showcase, which runs from April 16 to October 12, will complement the current exhibit Utagawa: Masters of the Japanese Print, 1770–1900, a collection of woodblock prints, which runs until June 15.

For those of you not entirely sure what Japonisme is, click here. In short, the French word describes the influence Japanese artists, such as Hokusai and Utamoro, had on Western artists like Monet, van Gogh, Manet and Renoir.
