House of Wax - 2005

Direção: Jaume Collet-Serra

Roteiro: Chad Hayes, Carey Hayes

Elenco: Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, Paris Hilton, Brian Van Holt, Jared Padalecki

Got this blog idea from Moviefone yesterday. With the release of “The Incredible Hulk” c

Got this blog idea from Moviefone yesterday. With the release of "The Incredible Hulk" coming out, it has brought up the idea of the Worst Remakes Of All-Time! Moviefone lists their Top 20...but I'm gonna cut it down because, seriously...who really is gonna pay money to sit through a "Rollerball" or "The Fog" remake? Not me! So here are the 5 I've seen that should have stuck to the original and not been made at all!

5. The Stepford Wives - 2004
Yeah...I started watching this on HBO one time and didn't make it past 15 minutes. Why, Nicole Kidman? Why?

4. House Of Wax - 2005
I honestly was looking forward to this remake. The Vincent Price original was creepy fun, but I thought with today's effects it might have been even better! I was wrong (except for Elisha Cuthbert...who is just plain HOT!).

Just in case you don't know who she is...

3. Psycho - 1998
Just sorta silly really. Vince Vaughn was okay...but I don't know why you would ever want to remake a Hitchcock classic? It's like remaking "The Wizard Of Oz"...you just don't do it.

2. Godzilla - 1998
I don't know if this is truly considered a "remake", but it sucked...so I'm leaving it in here. That makes TWO Matthew Broderick movies in this list (he was also in "Stepford Wives"). Good thing he was in "Ferris Bueller" or he would be automatically eliminated from ever making a movie ever again!

1. Planet Of The Apes - 2001
Mark Walberg looked bored. The monkey suits looked dumb. What's the point? Hell...the original wasn't THAT good to begin with! And the ending of this film was just awful...

So here's hoping "The Incredible Hulk" is better than any of these duds...

I'm going to see my agent. This movie SUCKS!

Moving on to play Sam Winchester in Supernatural after a fun role in House of Wax with Paris Hilton, Jared Padalecki is not a man you can easily ignore. His witty banter and fantastic chemisty with Jensen Ackles makes these two a great pair to watch on the small screen.

PARIS HILTON

Paris Whitney Hilton (b. 17th Feb, 1981) Born in New York, an Heiress to the Hilton Hotel family, Socialite, model, actress, author, recording artist, fashion designer, but media sensation. Her celebrity began after the release of a supposedly stolen sex-tape on the internet, featuring Paris with her boyfriend. Much maligned by the showbiz gossips, but in actual fact her antics are little different to many of her contemporaries. A very striking looking blonde, with model looks and a spoilt rich girl act, that the Papps adore. All the silly sex-tape controversy and dumb-blonde act aside though, Paris is really rather attractive. Beautiful in fact.

This article is hardly apple related, but to keep this blog eclectic, I would like to commemorate today, April ninth as the day when three dimensional (3-D) films had their big debut. The movie is called "Man In The Dark" and although it isn't the first successful 3-D film, it is the birthplace of its popularity. The movie didn't get good reviews from anyone, but it did begin a cyclone of 3-D hits such as the movie immediately following, "House Of Wax" which was shown in theaters merely two days later. "House Of Wax," the Warner Bros film was given better reviews and similarly claimed bragging rights over first 3-D film produced by a large studio. One of their first tag lines read, "You've never been scared until you've been scared in 3-D!" So, now lets have a toast to 3-D, and its fine work.

I also draw! Here's one I did of André De Toth. I've made his head massively overlong, unlike any of his films. I think this looks like one of those pieces of fan art, pencil drawings of Marilyn or Elvis with their eyes too far apart. Not a problem one can have with André. Unlike most of the Hollywood eyepatch directors (Ford, Ray, Lang) who had two eyes, one impaired, De Toth was genuinely cyclopean, like Walsh.

Yes! I am writing something this week about each of the eyepatch directors. I take the view that old-time directors had much in common with pirates, and this accounts in part for the plethora of patchwork.

De Toth came to Edinburgh Film Festival for a retrospective of his work. He was greeted by a festival employee, herself wearing an eyepatch. She had to explain that she really needed it and was not just taking the piss.

Adding to his unique appearance, De Toth sometimes wore a neck brace, the result of his twice having broken his neck. In Fragments, his quirky autobio, De Toth reports that the second time he broke it was the lowest point of his life, somehow implying that the first time was a cakewalk.

As if that weren't enough, upon arriving at Edinburgh Filmhouse, the Great Man expressed admiration for the punky close-shaved haircut of the man operating the box office. "Who did it?" "I did it myself." Whereupon De Toth had the guy shave his own head. So now he was monocular, neck-braced and bullet-headed. And Hungarian. Fearsome.

Though in his late eighties, he had an incredibly vigorous, forceful manner. You assumed he was totally fit, but my friend Andy Gonzalez saw him attempting to descend the three steps to the Filmhouse bar, with the aid of a handrail, and reported, "It took him fookin' ages."

Somehow both severe and charming, De Toth made an impressive guest, and I was much taken with the few of his films I managed to see -- PLAY DIRTY is a very considerable war film, with the most extraordinary ending. There was always the hint that De Toth could be a tough egg, which was confirmed when I read here how he conspired to have Paul Picerni, his leading man in HOUSE OF WAX decapitated. I exaggerate, but only slightly.

'Andre says to Frank Lovejoy, "For the next shot, Frrrank, you come in with the other policemen. You see Buchinski! He's got Paul in the guillotine! [...] You lift up the block of wood, you pull out Paul and, zoooom!, down come the blade! That's the next shot! Light it!" I say, "Andre -- excuse me. You're gonna shoot this in separate cuts, aren't you?" He says, "No, no, no! We do it in one take, one cut! Frrrank pulls you out, zoooom!, down come the blade!" Now, bear in mind I'm a young actor under contract.

'I say, "Andre, I don't wanna intercede on your job as director, but how do you propose to do it in one take?" He indicates Red Turner, the prop man. [...] Andre says, "Red Turner will sit on top of the guillotine; he will hold the block of wood between his legs; when Frank pull you out, Red will release the blade. And we see it all in one take!" I say, "Andre -- supposing Red drops the blade prematurely?" He says, "Only hurt for a second. Now don't t'ink about it, it'll make you nervous." And he walks away!'

Read the whole interview at The Astounding B Monster, it's an eye-opener. As Wallace Beery said to Louise Brooks, when she asked why he never did his own stunts, "All directors want to kill actors."

10.- House of Wax

9.- The Hills Have Eyes.

100% recomendada

8.- Amityville Horror

Me pareció algo floja, aunque tiene buenos sustos.

7.- King Kong

6.- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

5.- Dawn of the Dead.

Una de mis favoritas. Zombies, moto sierras, bebes zombies, cabezas explotando y final desesperante. Otra que hay que ver.

4.- The Blob

3.- The Fly

2.- The Ring

Jared Padalecki getting waxed in House of Wax.

So this movie came out I believe on May 5, 2005. Don't quote me. Anyway - back then I was absolutely in love with the movie before it even came out for obvious reasons: Not only was Jared Padalecki in it, but so was Paris Hilton. Yes, I am a Paris fan. So having them in a horror movie was like a dream come true.

I still love the movie. Although it's a cheesy, teen slasher film, it was one of the few that actually made me feel sorry for the characters. (Little did I know how I would feel while watching The Hills Have Eyes.) Jared Padalecki's character gets screwed a little too early for my taste, but I think one of the best scenes with him actually happens after he's been taken captive: His friend sees Jared's wax figure and begin peeling the wax off of Jared's face. Not only does the wax come off, but Jared's face actually comes off with it. It was gross but sad all at the same time considering Jared has the ability to weep one single tear to represent how much pain he is in. Pure awesomeness.

I was never a Chad Michael Murray fan (this was BEFORE my One Tree Hill obsession), but I have to admit he was pretty darn s-e-x-y in the movie. Especially the scene where he beats up the bad guy, and particularly when he runs and jumps in order to shut the garage door. (Only the die-hard teenies will know what I meant by that.)

What inpsired me to write about the flick? It's on FX right now. I think we need more movies with WB (excuse me, the CW) characters in them. Especially some Jensen Ackles. Why on earth hasn't this guy had any big screen jobs? (Maybe it's because of his movie DeVour? Alright, so that movie wasn't THAT bad. Ok. I'm lying. But he made it worth it.)

Alright. I'm done. Go watch it.

2005's House of Wax is a remake of the 1953 horror film of the same name and the 1933 film Mystery of the Wax Museum. The film probably gained most of its notoriety for the performance of one Paris Hilton. Her supporting role in the film gained a lot of press and attention, especially given the circumstances of her gory death in the film and the tongue-in-cheek satirical nature of her character and the use of some video cameras. Besides Paris Hilton's gory demise, there are a number of things that make House of Wax worth seeing, surprisingly.

The film casts Elisha Cuthbert as Carly and Jared Padalecki as her boyfriend, Wade. Carly and Wade have hit the road with their pals, including Carly's cast-perfectly-to-type friend Paige (Hilton), Carly's brother Nick (Chad Michael Murray), Nick's friend Dalton (Jon Abrahams) and Paige's boyfriend Blake (Robert Ri'chard). The army of teen heartthrobs eventually get lost and have some car trouble, leading to an encounter with a strange redneck. Needing to fix the car, Carly and Wade head to the nearby town and start looking for some car parts. The town is, of course, very strange and it isn't long before all hell breaks loose.

The town is a creation made entirely of wax and human bodies, designed by two freakish brothers who are trying to complete their masterpiece. Carly and her friends are suitable victims, of course, so the games begin. The killings in the film are gory and bloody, of course, with lots of use of wax, melting wax and wax covered people as creative plot devices. I'm sure that this film is no comparison to the original Vincent Price House of Wax, but I honestly couldn't have cared less. I was helplessly and vigorously entertained by this film, without a doubt.

The first thing to realize about House of Wax is that it is blissfully self-aware and gleefully smarter than it looks. It works on all of the horror film cliches with such panache that it becomes obvious that first-time director Jaume Collet-Sera just wants to have an awful lot of fun making a movie. The thing about House of Wax, and Paris Hilton for that matter, is that it is naturally entertaining. Whether in a good way or in a bad way, there is something ubiquitous about the energy cast off in this film that allows it to permeate in the greatest of ways through to our horror-film sensibilities. Whether legitimate thrills and chills are received through the film becomes secondary to how flat-out entertaining the film is and how well aware the filmmakers and the performers are of just what it is they're doing. Consider it Ocean's Eleven for the teen scream set.

Along with such bold and beautiful cast chemistry comes the notion that this is no average horror film. House of Wax could have used all of the devices at once and thrown out a balls-to-the-wall schlock piece, but instead the film utilized gratuitous timing and patience as we linger just a moment too long in an eerie wax museum and wait just a little too long in the dark for Paris Hilton to be impaled. Nothing in House of Wax works as it should, but rather it is all a slow sludge of horror that drips and oozes down the screen. The gore takes its cue from the rest of the timing. Instead of cutting too quickly from an impaling, for instance, Collet-Sera loiters like a teenager at a corner store and waits for the last disgusting ooze or disturbing crunch.

The film takes its time to develop characters that we are later going to see killed, giving us a good forty-five minutes of development and careful meandering before the blood starts to splatter and the wax starts to drip. As soon as the gore begins, though, it's almost like a cork has been pulled from a bottle. The last half of the film can only be described as "relentless" as it twists and turns its way through gooey melting messes of wax homes and wax characters. Some of the scenes are particularly gruesome and gleeful all at once, like Carly taking a baseball bat to a villain with such bravado and brutality that Collet-Sera lets you see a man's face get bashed in with no filter.

It is that type of "can't turn away" madness that makes House of Wax way better than it ever had any business being. Paris Hilton is self-aware and does her part to create entertainment, Elisha Cuthbert is good as the female in peril and the remainder of the cast is adequate as typical male stereotypes. The film's eye candy comes in multiple forms for multiple types of people, casting a wide net with its gore, sex appeal and comic moments. There’s also a terrific scene involving a cinema full of wax dummies watching Whatever Happened To Baby Jane. So really, who can argue with that?

6.5/10
