Two pieces of software facilitate that connection, the device's operating system and the browser that renders the web. Once you're on the web, Google is king, but, up to that point, Microsoft is the top dog. Firefox is making cracking headway - last count had Explorer as being down to about 75% of the browser market - but that's still a large handful of doomination in MS's favour. And, in the meantime, Windows still has about 90% of the desktop OS market.

Chrome, however, though it might be positioned against Explorer is a threat to Windows too. For, when you combine Chrome with Google's increasing raft of apps, you end up with a web-based operating system that starts to remove the need for the PC's in-built one.

There's a new wave of devices being put out there that merely offer access to the web - i.e. web books. All they offer is web access, but, if you're using web-based [Google] apps like word processing, spreadsheets, contacts lists and email - plus Google Talk - then web access is all you need.

All that gets even more interesting when you think about mobile, since, the market is not formed yet. Chrome has to battle Explorer, Windows, Mac OSX, Firefox and many others to get traction (which it will still of course do). On mobile, the market is still evolving its embedded systems. If we consider Google's Android mobile platform then the manufacturers can use Chrome to develop devices that skip entirely the need for troublesome operating systems, connecting instead direct to a web-based system that allows users to browse, use apps, email, text and talk to people. There's a long way to go in terms of the 'connecting' part thanks to the continued unreliability of 3G networks, but ultra-high speed mobile connections are coming and - anyway - Google Gears apparently allows you to work on Google apps stuff 'offline'.

At that point, you can imagine a true Google phone that allows us to get all we want out of it without ever having to deal with Microsoft. I use an HTC Touch Dual - I need its combination of Microsoft Outlook with web browsing and usability. But, once the iPhone sorts out its push email and contacts synchronisation stuff with certain reliability then I'm off to see them. Using Google's apps more frequently - as I'm now doing - might mean a G-Phone could bag me instead. Chrome starts to make that evermore likely.

I got an email from one of my readers who told me that HTC Touch has a promo.

First, HTC Touch Dual is powered by windows mobile 6. Its a 3.5G (HSDPA) phone with a 2 cameras with the main one having 2 mega pixels. 400MHz processor / 256MB ROM / 128MB SDRAM.

Is the HTC Touch dual a Dual Sim phone? Nope.

So why then is it called HTC Touch Dual? Well.. because you get a touch screen phone powered by the  TouchFLO technology of HTC - finger swipe navigation - and  a 16-key standard or 20-key QWERTY keyboard.

When you buy an HTC touch Dual, You can get as high as P5,000 discount if you'll trade-in a cellphone, of any brand, working or not.

According to the picture-poster attached, the promo is from Today, June 1 until June 15, 2008.

So why buy the HTC touch Dual? Well if you just want an iPhone like phone that's expensive and if you're a fan of HTC. =p

Dass DHL als Versanddienstleister alles dafür tut, diese Zusage ad absurdum zu führen, steht auf einem anderen Blatt. Das, was in der Hand vom amazon liegt, wird getan, und die Versandbestätigung ist in den allermeisten Fällen deutlich schneller als nach 24 Stunden im Posteingang. Apropos DHL: Ich kann jeden nur vor der Achse Berlin - Krefeld warnen. Pakete geraten dort regelmässig in ein Bermuda-Dreieck und verweilen ein bis zwei Tage im Frachtpostzentrischen Nirvana: Freitags geschickt, Dienstags zugestellt. Das kann nur noch Hermes toppen!)

Was mich aber wurmt sind Liefertermine, die wie die Möhre vor dem Esel (in Form des Kunden) hergezogen werden, gerade in Aktion beim O2 XDA Star (aka HTC Touch Dual). O2 vermarktet dieses Modell exklusiv, stellt aber natürlich auch Geräte den Händlern zur Verfügung. Und genau da hakt´s. Während O2 selbst nur lakonisch "Vorbestellbar" anmerkt, gibt es schon den einen oder anderen Händler, der es angeblich am Lager hat (was sich bei näherer Nachfrage eher in ein "Emm, jaaa, sollen heute oder morgen wahrscheinlich...." relativiert) oder aber einen Liefertermin angibt. Ich nenne keine Namen, weil ich den speziellen Händler wirklich sehr schätze, aber ich falle immer wieder darauf rein:

Bestellt am 3.11. mit dem Liefertermin 5.11., am 4.11. kontrolliert, Termin 6.11., dann 8.11., 9.11. und so weiter. Man kann ja eigentlich gar nicht meckern: Da pflegt jemand seine Artikel-Stammdaten.... aber als Kunden nützt es mir nur bedingt, wenn diese Aktualisierungen so belastbar sind wie eine Pappmache-Brücke... :-( Ganz ehrlich: Mit jedem Tag, den ich länger hinter der Möhre "Liefertermin" hertrotte, wächst der Drang, den Auftrag zu stornieren und einfach adhoc irgendwo zu kaufen, wenn ich es sehe oder jemand Verlässliches es auf Lager hat.

Jahaaaa.... mir ist doch klar, dass Ihr nicht ausliefern könnt, wenn Ihr nicht beliefert werdet! Aber dann setzt doch bitte die Termine so, dass man deren "unverlässlichkeit" oder "Vorläufigkeit" erkennen kann...

Und dabei wäre es taktisch so geschickt gewesen: Pünktlich zum Marktstart des iPhones haben die, die ein Business-Gerät wollen, mit dem XDA Star direkt die Alternative zur Hand und müssen so nicht erst gegen einen "Schwächeanfall" ankämpfen.... wie beispielsweise der Kollege Samaschke, der jetzt seit Wochen wahlweise lästert und weint... :-D
