  • Authors: a person who writes content for the site.
  • Editors: a person who reviews written content and suggests or makes changes. An editor can approve or deny the content to be published.
  • Publishers: a person who sets the content to be published (posted) on the website.
  • Translators: this is a person who translates a piece of content into one or more different languages.

Then look at our users, they used to be consumers, now they are also contributors, enable channels for them to do this easily, with the minimum of effort. Encourage user profiles and accounts, thereby adding responsibility to their comments, as they become more accountable.

Finally think of the machines reading our content the power of RSS and all the readers and display surfaces that will show the syndicated content. Be wise in your metadata mark up when supplying this type of information and realise the pervasive importance of this area of the digital medium.

Tasks not workflow

A task based approach is a more fluid and agile way of maintaining the system and it is generic, independent of different market cultures and political elements. Rather than detail a workflow that may be specific to the culture that the users work in, try to propose tasks that will be highlighted and grouped and that can be tackled by a multitude of users.

Micro changes and Macro Effects

Its ok to experiment as long as you test and measure the effects of changes and that designs can be rolled back to previous iterations. The tenants of good design, have not changed but there is more flexibility in the new CMS to test small changes, often. There is a need to promote the idea that failure is acceptable as long as lessons are learnt and enhancements made as a direct result from experimentation.

The types of change and learning needed;

  • Changes in content – the different types of task need to be realised and ensure that the team is task based not workflow based.
  • Visual changes – team must know that moving elements on a page may have an effect on user engagement, page impressions or conversions.
  • Structural changes – Team need to realise the importance of information architecture for site structure, authority and the impact on SEO.
  • Changes to metadata – Team needs to know how changes to the content of metadata will have an effect on the SEO and also how information is packaged for syndicated content in RSS.

Tools and techniques for designing and testing content

Measuring and testing user behaviour
  • A/B and Multivariate testing – ideally all newly designed pages, or pages that have had major changes need to be tested.
  • Personas and user stories – User stories need to be created when a new page is designed to ensure that the personas of the site are catered for.
  • Analytics – conversion points will need to be agreed upon. The analytics need to be in place so that you can measure success of the page but also you need to be sure of what constitutes success. Is it more sign-ups, more subscriptions or more feed subscribers?

Defining design of page elements
  • Paper Prototyping – before changes are made, work out the layout on paper and communicate with other team members, it allows honest critique and rapid iteration. It also keeps the team from being married to one solution
  • Pattern library – use design patterns to help formulate ideas and use designs that have been utilised elsewhere in other markets
  • Taxonomy and site structure - taxonomy and controlled vocabulary needs to be referred to whenever site structures are changed and this need to be reflected in these two documents. Managing taxonomies is a core part of website management
  • Gauging Usability
  • Heuristic evaluation checklist – offers the ability to look at any page and define the areas that either pass or fail usability requirements
  • Ethnography or beta testing – either observe users in person and record their behaviour or create user groups who are in dialogue with the site manager and feedback their experiences in using designated test areas.
  • Usability capture software – observe and record users from another location using software that records and analyses the user behaviour
Ensuring Findability

SEM – Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a holistic term used to describe the practice of promoting websites by increasing their visibility within search engines. The term, SEM in recent years has been increasingly associated with only PPC and Paid Inclusion.

PPC – Pay Per Click is an advertising model used on many Search Engines to distribute contextually relevant advertising against a set of search results. The PPC advertising model is one of the most trackable forms of advertising available.

SEO – Search Engine Optimisation is the practice of promoting websites through organic search results. SEO looks to package website content in such a way as to make it easily accessible for users and search engines crawlers as possible.

Landing Pages – The creation of landing pages is an SEO technique used to target terms within the Keyword Footprint. Landing pages are used to aggregate or signpost links to themed content and are designed to act as alternative points-of-entry to a website.

A holistic approach

The individual elements make the job of managing the website become easier as these techniques give a full picture of the site users and also their resulting behaviour online. The different methods help follow the principles of being user centred without the teams being bound up with process.

What the techniques deliver should give the teams enough knowledge that allows them to design, test and publish content with confidence.

Gino Roncaglia ci ha parlato ieri da Boston attraverso un interessantissimo filmato sui contenuti didattici aperti: tra learning objects e open courseware, con un focus su questi ultimi.

Marco Caresia, coordinatore dei corsi sul Software Libero presso il Centro di Formazione Professionale CTS Einaudi di Bolzano, nonché  socio fondatore del progetto PLIO, con slide sui suoi lavori (e distribuzione in presenza di CD di FUSS - distro Linux apposita per le scuole di BZ - e Open Office). Il mio intervento conclude il pomeriggio, con dibattito degli educatori presenti sulla complessità e il multitasking per me particolarmente significativo, poiché quello della scuola è un ambiente che mi è (ormai) piuttosto estraneo. Qui un gentile resoconto di una collega presente.

Sono stati formati gruppi di lavoro, il mio sulla documentazione e le interfacce di ricerca in cui abbiamo riflettuto con tre colleghi formatori sugli archivi che raccolgono la documentazione - sia universitaria-scientifica (BOA) sia scolastico-didattica (Gold). Un abbozzo in divenire dei lavori.

Mario Rotta, Dicotomie come motore di pensiero: sulle contraddizioni del Web 2.0

Quali sono gli scenari dell'innovazione?

Complessità è un cosa all'interno del quale posso individuare dei percorsi, non procede semplicemente per accumulo; vanno capite le contraddizioni e gli scenari che ci costringono a riflettere per sopravvivere.

The magic number seven (Miller, 1954)

Sette dicotomie/contraddizioni, proposte non perché le si debba risolvere, ma perché se ne riconosca la ricchezza, poste in chiave fenomenologica:

1) immediatezza/ipermediazione (J. Bolter)

concetto di remediation = come i vari media entrano in conflitto tra loro e ciascuno mutua dall'altro parti di linguaggio costringendo l'altro medium a riposizionarsi, a ri-mediarsi. I media procedono verso la ricerca di una sempre maggiore immediatezza e verso un accumulo di linguaggi (-> ipermediazione); per Bolter la realtà virtuale è un esempio di questa dicotomia tra immediatezza e ipermediazione; saremo sempre più stretti tra il bisogno di essere trasparenti e la tendenza a una deriva ipermediata, all'accumulare linguaggi. Il web semantico sarà la soluzione del problema di Bolt

2) integrazione VS specializzazione

L'integrazione è intesa in genere come integrazione di strumenti (v. cellulari) però contemporaneamente questa integrazione ci mette davanti a un bisogno forte di specializzazione. A volte la deriva verso l'integrazione è critica e al contempo si scontra col bisogno di specializzazione. I blog o i wiki sono una risposta alla mancata risoluzione di questa dicotomia, sono un po' oggetti integrati e un po' oggetti specializzati.

3) personalizzazione/standardizzazione

I sistemi complessi si configurano in nome della personalizzazione ma basandoli sulla stadardizzazione

4) consistenza/vacuità

Yahoo! Answers è un'applicazione del concetto di consistenza ma con una tendenza di deriva alla vacuità

5) socializzazione/autoreferenzialità

Vedi dialettica nei blog e nei social network tra l'emergere dell'individualità, del twittering indistinto e la comunitarizzazione della conoscenza

6) ubiquità/contestualizzazione

La Rete in sé ha dei presupposti per l'ubiquità e contemporaneamente ci porta verso una contestualizzazione, una localizzazione iper-specifica. Il termine glocal vorrebbe esprimere questa dicotomia (in realtà va vista come una potenzialità doppia).

Google Earth e Maps sono killer apps con cui gli educatori dovranno fare i conti.

7) liquidità/solidità

La Rete oggi è sempre più liquida e sempre più solida contemporaneamente: i tag ne sono un simbolo: sono una modalità per rappresentare l'informazione allo stesso tempo liquida e solida.

La Rete tenderà sempre più ad essere liquida e tenderà a formare dei gorghi; qualcosa si solidificherà e noi praticheremo questa doppia attività: cercare di nuotare nella corrente continua e aggrapparci all'iceberg che stiamo cercando.

Partendo da questo scenario si può lavorare su ipotesi di articolazione degli ambienti di apprendimento che vadano oltre il dibattito sul c.d. Web 2.0: L3 (Life Long Learning). Mettere gli studenti al centro dell'ambiente di apprendimento e questo ambiente è arredato per risolvere i problemi e soddisfare i bisogni educativi degli utenti. Gli approcci che convivono sono: formale, informale, non formale. Andare oltre il concetto di piattaforma verso quello di mashup, di ambiente dinamico. Ambienti integrati di apprendimento personale. Però la rivoluzione copernicana deve puntare ed essere realizzata dalle persone, non dalla piattaforma (e dalla piattaforma della piattaforma etc.). Qualcuno che sappia fare una mediazione educativa efficace.

Concetto Fondamentale: abitare un territorio.

Abitiamo territori biodigitali (non solo i Millensials); siamo tutti persone biodigitali, siamo fatti di libri, di nuclei di conoscenze. La media education avrebbe dovuto partire negli anni '50 per educare alla televisione. Comprendere i giochi di codice. Come racconto questa cosa determina ciò che la cosa è. La tecnologia è rimasta ancella della cultura scientifica benché abbia avuto nella storia dell'umanità un'epistemologia ben precisa. Evoluzione dall'induzione all'abduzione nella scienza -> What if /If then nelle istruzioni informatiche. La tecnologia scommette sue due cose: agire concretamente nel futuro (cosa che le culture umanistica e scientifica non fanno) e manipolare l'ambiente – la qualcosa ci ha permesso di diventare uomini tecnologici: noi siamo scimmie aggiunte, cioè con protesi. Tutto ciò in cui viviamo è costruito (curato, tenuto in vita etc.) - neppure i boschi in cui siamo immersi sono naturali, ma vengono puliti e curati. Il prosciutto di San Daniele è un oggetto tecnologico. Tutto ciò che ci circonda è oggetto tecnologico. Il più grande oggetto tecnologico realizzato dall'uomo è il paesaggio: trasformazione e distribuzione applicate ai tre elementi: materia, energia e distribuzione. L'informazione è la ricetta.

Poche persone sono in grado di pensare in orizzontale (un po' la differenza tra Microsoft e Google). Pensare in termini di servizi e non prodotti; flussi, processi invece che oggetti.

Guardare ai computer come a oggetti connessi. Chi ha cominciato a fare informatica negli anni '80, con il codice, è rimasto imprigionato in questa visione del computer come oggetto non connesso.

Provare a guardare al proprio territorio come biodigitale, come a un nodo della rete.

Doppia abitanza, abitare in biodigitale; nel Web ognuno ha il suo stile di abitanza: residenziale o nomadico. L'importanza della lateralità del pensiero, in grado di risolvere i problemi più del pensiero ossessionato dalla sequenzialità accumulativa.

Leggere il territorio come testo, ipertesto, communiy, reti, flusso. E scrivere il territorio.

Quanti gradi di separazione vi sono tra il rubinetto di casa mia e l'ufficio del Rettore all'università?

Siamo prigionieri della visione del computer come iper-tecnologico. Il problema è spezzare il panico iniziale davanti all'oggetto, al cambiamento delle abitudini.

Sterling, La forma del futuro: fondamentale la riutilizzabilità dei processi di progettazione.

Dal benessere al ben-stare. Quando una collettività di un territorio è in grado di percepirlo come tecnologicamente fondato, si pone eticamente rispetto al proprio abitare, produce il senso del proprio essere se stessa raccontandolo nel territorio. Se arrivo a capire che l'ambiente è costruito ne sono responsabile.

Urbanistica per gli spazi sociali on-line.

Metafora delle folksonomy: in un cortile ventoso in autunno le foglie sanno bene dove radunarsi. Gli aggregati di conoscenze emergeranno, non progettabili scientemente ma emergeranno. La funzione thumbs up/down è importantissima perché rappresenta la nostra posizione etica di fronte a ciò che noi stessi costruiamo online.

Non esistono più città, ma borghi digitali, perché siamo connessi. Urbanistica degli spazi sociali online. Non bisogna progettare i contenuti sociali che andranno un domani sul territorio ma in contenitori dentro cui le cose che faremo assumeranno senso. Pordenone per prima in Italia sta facendo una e-Democracy seria con l'accesso al wi-fi gratuito. Garantire spazi di discussione pubblica. Quei luoghi della città connotati dall'essere connettivi diventano le interfacce della città per accedere ai contenuti, porte magiche verso l'informazione. Do rappresentatività visiva, figurativa ai luoghi della città, è un luogo in cui io abito molti altri luoghi, non territorialmente connotati. La cultura tecnologica subito diventa cultura tecno-territoriale perché parla del nostro abitare i territori. Google Earth è fondamentale per l'educazione.

Olistico vuol dire che il tutto è più della somma delle parti. In una scuola vanno garantite le condizioni concrete: tutte le classi devono essere cablate. Il 50% del Pil europeo dipende dalle reti telematiche: bisogna muovere le informazioni, non le persone! (certo, ci si incontra, l'informazione è sempre blended)

Nei suoi corsi Giorgio approccia gli insegnanti così dicendo: io non sto formando insegnanti, sto formando persone. Voi dovete comunque abitare la Rete, altrimenti non siete nel posto giusto per raccontare cose belle.
