Unfortunately that model which I described some weeks ago to put the input event delivery of the X s

Unfortunately that model which I described some weeks ago to put the input event delivery of the X server in a separate thread wouldn't be an advantage. I precipitated myself thinking that it could be feasible. Sorry :(

I started to implement all this but it showed a very boring task to grab all the globals variables which both threads touch and to lock it. So I decided to stop going in this way. It's hard to program thinking in parallel. It's even harder to debug a program with severals flows. More, the tools don't help you (if you have lucky, gdb will work).

But the main reason I can argue to stop with this model is that the "main" event flow of execution (i.e. basically all the functions in {Swapped,}ProcVector) and the input delivery flow (ProcessInputEvents()) are very very tied. Both deal a lot with clients and we'd need to lock several globals, thus spending a lot of time in the management of the threads. It's easy to see this acting: just put a breakpoint in TryClientEvents(). Every single request to deliver a given event to a given client involves this function. And both input and main event flow will call TryClientEvents(). So you will see a zillion of times this function being called. The contention of the eventual processing and main threads would be even greater if the client choose to receive MotionNotify event.

So yeah, it's far from be clear how to put processing of input events inside another thread.

== Next ==

In the next days I'll be traveling to CESol, Fortaleza here in Brazil. I was invited to talk about my work in X land. Latin America has a lot of promising countries concerning FOSS development however for some reason no one actively participate and contribute for the X development (why?). I'll try to motivate people there somehow :)

In the next week I'll put the generation thread in a shape good enough to eventually push this to upstream. Also I'll try to write a good sumary of all my work given that GSoC is in the end.

Some person has some work, called a project, that he wants to get done. Let us call him the project

Some person has some work, called a project, that he wants to get done. Let us call him the project provider.

The project provider tells his requirements to one or more persons he is in direct contact with or he has tele-contact with or even to strangers by sending email/ messages/ posts. It is the Advertising Phase.

There are websites specifically catering to this process. We will henceforth talk only about this process taking place on such websites.

Some of the persons who come to know about this project think that they can do it, so they - let us call them the project doers, contact the project provider and discuss with him to understand it further - what inputs will be provided by the project provider to the project doer, in what volume, in what format, by what method, at what time(s). They also discuss what outputs will be provided back by the project doer to the project provider, in what volume, by what method, at what time(s). It is the Work Clarification Phase.

They further discuss how much money is to be paid by the project provider to the project doer, by what method, at what time(s). It is the Negotiation Phase.

After all these issues get mutually agreed upon, the project doer puts that amount value and that work completion duration and any of his conditions on that website. It is the Bidding Phase.

The project provider now selects that bid of that project doer. It is the Project Award Phase.

The project doer whose bid has been selected now confirms that he is accepting the award of the project. It is the Project Award Confirmation Phase.

The project provider sends the inputs to the project doer. The project doer does the work and sends back the outputs to the project provider. If there are modifications required, The project provider asks the project doer to do that and the project doer does that. It is the Work In Progress Phase.

The project provider accepts the output and pays the money to the project doer. It is the Payment Phase.

The project doer receives the money. It is the Receiving the Payment Phase.

The project provider and the project doer bid farewell and part ways.

RETAIL PRICES of key construction materials in Metro Manila rose at a faster year-on-year ra

RETAIL PRICES of key construction materials in Metro Manila rose at a faster year-on-year rate of 7.1% in April, recent data from the National Statistics Office showed.

The continued uptick, which compares to 5.5% growth in May, came even as demand weakened: Construction activity slowed in the first quarter as indicated by a 3% dip in approved building permits to 22,787 from a year before.

All commodity groups in the retail price index posted higher annual growth rates. Goods classified under miscellaneous construction materials registered the largest price gain at 23.1%, followed by electrical materials at 7.5%.

Electrical wires and accessories retailer Electrical Equipment Sales Co., for example, admitted to rasing prices in the past months.

"Factory prices became more expensive. Raw materials like rubber and wiring cost more so we had to adjust," a company official said in the vernacular.

Likewise, masonry materials were 5.8% costlier in April than the same period last year. Prices of painting compounds (4.3%), carpentry materials (2.8%), plumbing materials (2.1%), and tinsmithery goods (1.3%) also crept up.

Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines operations manager Vincent B. Castillo attributed the price gains to the cost-push of more expensive inputs.

"Coal prices went up," he said.

Growth in retail prices is likely to be sustained in the following months in step with the record high inflation rates of 11.4% in June and 12.2% in July. Already, the price of 40 kilos of cement in Metro Manila was up 5% in July than in the previous month, Trade department data show.

GLOBAL CASH transfer firm Western Union Co. has begun collecting a stamp tax on money sent home

GLOBAL CASH transfer firm Western Union Co. has begun collecting a stamp tax on money sent home by Filipinos abroad, which it said will be remitted to the national government.

The move, implemented since May, was in accordance with a provision in the Tax Reform Act of 1997 that imposes a thirty-centavo documentary stamp tax (DST) on each P200 worth of transactions involving the transfer of money to the Philippines.

"Our legal counsels have been studying the ruling and we’ve decided to take the conservative side and implement it," Patricia Z. Riingen, regional vice-president for Western Union, told a briefing yesterday.

The DST on money transfers made by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) has been the subject of debate following the filing of a bill by Senator Manuel A. Roxas II, who sought the amendment of Section 181 of the Tax Code.

Critics, led by sectoral group Migrante International, have also scored the DST as another burden for Filipino workers who are already charged high remittance fees.

Ms. Riingen, however, pointed out that the DST does not form part of Westen Union’s remittance charges and fees but will be remitted to the national government.

"It’s not something we collect for Western Union but we pass it to the government," she said.

"They [OFWs] could go to their mayors and congressmen to lobby for them to be exempted from the DST," she added.

Western Union said it has slashed its remittance cost by 50% to $12 for every $800 worth of money transfer deals from the US to the Philippines. Fees for money transfers from the Middle East were similarly cut to 35 dirhams for every $500 worth of remittances.

The move was made amid stiffer competition and heeded a central bank call to bring down the cost of sending money home so that OFWs stop using riskier channels.

"We are constantly reviewing our pricing. It depends on the efficiencies of the market," Ms. Riingen said.

Remittances from some eight million Filipinos living and working abroad, expected to reach $15.7 billion this year, have been a major driver of the Philippine economy. The DST on remittances, which is also equivalent to 0.15% of the transacted amount, translates to $1.5 million additional revenues for the government for every billion dollars sent home by Filipino workers.

THE AGRICULTURE sector grew by 5.4% in the second quarter, beating economists’ expectations

THE AGRICULTURE sector grew by 5.4% in the second quarter, beating economists’ expectations that results would have been weighed down by higher input prices and weather disturbances.

The Bureau of Agricultural Statistics on Friday reported the second quarter results, which compares to the first quarter’s 4% and contributed to first semester growth of 4.7%.

Agricultural crops, which account for almost half of total farm output, recorded a 9.82% gain in the second quarter.

The poultry subsector also posted an output rise of 7.76%, but livestock production fell 3.19% "because of pests and diseases that affected the hog industry," the Agriculture department said.

Fisheries growth fell to 1.65%, and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources director Malcolm I. Sarmiento said this was due to "high fuel costs and the typhoons and natural calamities that occurred during the period".

Fuel prices account for 60-70% of fisheries’ operating costs. Meanwhile, nine typhoons have hit the country this year.

Agricultural economist Leonardo A. Gonzales of the Sikap-Strive Foundation told BusinessWorld that the full-year government projection of 4.5-5.5% growth would be challenged by more typhoons and the high cost of fertilizers.

Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap declined to provide forecasts for the coming months, saying "it is too early to make a call on the third quarter figures."

He added "that means we are keeping the [4.5-5.5% growth] target for now."

Mr. Sarmiento, however, said the growth target for fisheries would be lowered to 7-8% from 10%.

On Thursday, economists said second quarter growth would most likely be lower or the same as in the first quarter, citing more expensive fertilizers and a series of typhoons.

The official results, however, showed palay production had gone up by 10.51% to 3371.87 million metric tons (MMT) in the second quarter. The government is eyeing a full-year output of 17.34 MMT, equivalent to 6.67% growth.

Sugarcane output surged by 113.85% to 6864.86 MMT. Double digit output gains were recorded in corn (24.01%), bananas (20.99%), pineapples (14.29%), and tobacco (11.88%).

In the poultry subsector, chicken output went up 10.62% to 250.26 MMT but duck and duck egg production fell by 16.99% and 9.59%, respectively.

Carabao and dairy output in the livestock subsector increased by 5.05% and 5.25%, respectively, while hog industry production contracted by 4.47%.

Also.

[caption id="attachment_171" align="alignnone" width="122" caption="Panitia Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_172" align="alignnone" width="83" caption="Peta rengasdengklok"][/caption]

Belum!!!

[caption id="attachment_173" align="alignnone" width="110" caption="Agresi Militer Belanda melalui udara"][/caption]

John Edwards is a do-nothing, hypocritical scum bag who cheats on his cancer stricken wife while running for President of The United States of America. And lies about it. I've avoided talking about this for a while now, since it will only hurt the Edwards Family, but it's too late now.

I knew he was a phony from the beginning.

By the way, if this was a Republican, the mainstream media would be all over it the minute the National Enquirer broke it. Remember the "story" the Times ran about McCain? I do.

But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the media didn't run it to protect Elizabeth Edwards. Maybe they didn't run it because the story was broke by The Enquirer.

I could certainly be wrong, but being a Democrat certainly didn't hurt the muti-millionaire who exploited those in poverty for political gain.

Whether I am right or wrong, do me a favor. Leave a comment. Tell me what you think.

Instead of watching the opening ceremonies, I was learning my SHAPE. Well, part of my SHAPE at least. I get to learn the rest from 9-4 today. Woohoo. Actually, in all seriousness, I am excited because I do see value in understanding the gifts and ways God has made me and others. Last night I took the Strengthsfinder test and for those of you who are interested here are my results and the short little summary (Here's where you can view more short summaries or just look at a book):

1. Input: People who are especially talented in the Input theme have a craving to know more. Often they like to collect and archive all kinds of information.

2. Learner: People who are especially talented in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them.

3. Achiever: People who are especially talented in the Achiever theme have a great deal of stamina and work hard. They take great satisfaction from being busy and productive.

4. Connectedness: People who are especially talented in the Connectedness theme have faith in the links between all things. They believe there are few coincidences and that almost every event has a reason.

5. Restorative: People who are especially talented in the Restorative theme are adept at dealing with problems. They are good at figuring out what is wrong and resolving it.

p.s. Apparently, I'm an INFJ again so maybe I'm not as much as a T or I as I thought once :) Here are the numbers if that helps: 11 50 25 44

Input events routed through another thread/process can have bad effects on latency because we can

Input events routed through another thread/process can have bad effects on latency because we can't guarantee that it will get scheduled at the right moment. Although this is hard to see happening with the current X server threaded implementation, we must design something to avoid it. One way to improve the responsiveness is to give a high priority to the input thread and also adjust the CPU scheduling. (Note that this will not avoid problems related with page faults which usually happen in the X input flow.)

Linux uses 1:1 thread model and the scheduler handles every thread as a process. For now I don't care about others systems. Both input generation and processing threads was designed to sleep after a relatively short CPU run. So we can give a priority to processes that are trusted to not hog the CPU. And given they are special time-critical applications I have no doubt in what policy to use: I set both input threads to use the real-time FIFO policy and to get the maximum priority (sched_get_priority_max()).

---

I'm sure that someone will complain telling that this would decrease a bit the main thread when used together with both input threads. In GUI we're talking about better user experience. Latency variability must be avoided whenever possible in interactive situations. What the user see is what matters. For non-interactive processes (server scheduling workloads) the situation is totally different.

Xorg's philosophy is to be portable so we have to take care when setting this kind of parameters. It is a complex issue and different systems do it in wildly different ways. I was using my Linux box (2.6.24) to design it all.

[caption id="attachment_717" align="alignnone" width="400" caption="»Typo-Wegweiser« @ Nerdcore"][/caption]

In Melbourne I developed a way-finding-system for the Eureka Tower Carpark. The distor[t]ed letters on the wall can be read perfectly when standing at the right position.
