My brain rambles like a train collecting words along the way,
like passengers at inspirational stops throughout the day
the train clanks, rolling along the rails with its hum
sometimes creating nothing more than conundrum
but sooner or later the passengers disembark
and come together to great a spark:

their hustle and bustle settles into form
sometimes pleasing, sometimes a scorn
i try to gather them in an orderly fashion
and reign them in with well-written passion
the fervor intense, the message sincere
often misty with allegory and sometimes quite clear

they gather together along the blank platform
and settle gently and calmly before the storm
of editing and shifting that surely will come
until to the conductor's will they finally succumb
and this often is how my mind's poetry is created,
rolling like a train collecting passengers yet to be stated

One of the first things most of us remember hearing when learning to drive an automobile was “

One of the first things most of us remember hearing when learning to drive an automobile was "Keep your hands on the wheel."Then there were other precautions like, "Keep your eyes on the road, drive defensively, buckle up for safety, and watch the road signs!"
These basic precautions would keep us moving along safely, and help us arrive at our intended destinations on time. Remembering these simple golden rules of safe driving can also help with the achievement of other important objectives.
1. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel
Winners spend the majority of their time doing things that bring them closer to their goals. They stay on the intended path because their "hands are on the wheel." They make the most of each minute by staying engaged in actions of high priority. They accept help from others. However they take ultimate responsibility for guiding themselves to their destination.
2. Keep Your Eyes on the Road
Winners hold a clear view of what they want to achieve. By having a plan, and keeping the outcome clearly in mind, they are less likely to become sidetracked and lured into actions that waste precious time. They rest occasionally, enjoying the scenery and excitement of the journey. Yet when in motion, they keep their eyes on the path ahead, focusing on the outcome they want to achieve.
3. Drive Defensively
Winners never ignore problems. They are flexible, and know that they may have to apply the brakes, speed up, slow down, or take a detour now and then. They know that there will be obstacles at some point, "bumps and pot holes" to cross, and other moving vehicles to consider. They are prepared to act accordingly when unforeseen difficulties appear.
4. Buckle up for Safety
Even the safest drivers will occasionally have a fender bender, or may get side-swiped. However, they don't let occasional accidents or setbacks deter them from moving ahead. When difficulties appear, they focus on finding creative solutions. They consider setbacks to be learning experiences. They wear a mental "seat belt" by having plans for these circumstances. They also take adequate measures to insure and protect the things they've worked to build. They assure future security for themselves and their loved ones.
5. Watch the Road Signs
"Load limit, falling rocks, go, stop, yield, curve ahead, caution, speed limit," or similar signs are familiar to almost everyone. Road signs also tell how close we are to our destination, when we need to change lanes, or make a turn. They tell when other vehicles may be merging into our lane. Winners pay attention to similar signs as they work to fulfill projects and goals.
Winners are not simply "pipe dreamers." They stay in touch with the reality of current circumstances to stay flexible, and measure progress. By watching the signs, they can change course at the earliest possible moment if they have made a wrong turn. They use the signs along the road to achievement as tools for life-long learning and improvement.
Before ever leaving the driveway, we always know our intended destination, and reason for wanting to go there. However, trouble can occur in other areas when trying to move toward a vague notion of "success" without knowing exactly where that is. Defining a clear destination, and remembering these familiar driving precautions can help provide a safe and fulfilling journey to exciting new achievements.

About The Author

Steve Brunkhorst is a private counselor and coach, working in the fields of personal development, rehabilitation, and sales.
This painting, “In the Moonlight,” is my first ‘nocturne’. It’s quite

This painting, "In the Moonlight," is my first 'nocturne'. It's quite a challenge to create night scenes, but worth it for the dramatic effect.

[caption id="attachment_130" align="aligncenter" width="640" caption=""In the Moonlight" by Fatima Ronquillo, 2008 oil on panel, 8x10 inches, $2100 Wally Workman Gallery"][/caption]

My inspiration for this is a small copper painting by Adam Elsheimer, "The Flight into Egypt." Painted in 1609, it was the first painting of its kind which showed the biblical scene in a nocturnal forest, as described by Matthew (2:13). His contemporaries marveled at his rendering of the Milky Way, which has never been depicted before. I was struck by the lush quietness permeating this nocturnal scene. The moon in the picture reminded me of the many full moons which have taken my breath away. Few scenes elicit a mysterious mood as beautifully as a nocturne.

[caption id="attachment_201" align="aligncenter" width="720" caption=""The Flight into Egypt" by Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610), 1609. Oil on copper, 12 1/4 x 16 1/8 in.
Here is a preliminary sketch. When I have an idea for a painting, I quickly scribble in the composition. Sometimes I go straight to the panel in oils with only a cursory plan, as I did with "In the Moonlight."

Hawaii has become the first state to require solar water heaters in new homes,
pleasing environment

Hawaii has become the first state to require solar water heaters in new homes,

pleasing environmentalists but leading opponents to note the island chain's already high home prices.

Hawaiian Electric Co. estimates that about 85,000 households, or roughly 20% of all homes on the islands, already have solar water heating systems. They come standard in many new homes.

A traditionally powered water heater is the largest consumer of electricity inside a home, accounting for about 25% to 40% of the power used. A solar system costs about $6,000, compared with about $700 for an electric or natural gas water heater.

Environmentalists applauded the requirement: "At a time when the globe hungers for smart energy solutions, Hawaii is demonstrating how it can be done," said Jeff Mikulina, director of the Sierra Club of Hawaii.

But opponents contend that the law is unfair and will drive up home prices in Hawaii, where a modest home can start at $600,000.

State Sen. Gary Hooser, a Democrat who first introduced the measure five years ago, said home buyers would save money in the long run, with electricity bills at least $50 lower each month in a state with the highest electricity rates in the nation. "I'm hoping this will start a trend nationwide," said Hooser, who plans to meet with lawmakers in other sunny states such as California to push similar laws.

Hawaii relies on imported fossil fuels more than any other state, with about 90% of its energy coming from foreign countries, according to state data.

The new law prohibits issuing building permits for single-family homes that do not have solar water heaters. Some exceptions will be allowed, such as forested areas with little sunshine.

In January, Governor Lingle announced the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative partnership, which aims to have at least 70% of Hawaii's energy needs supplied by renewable sources by 2030

On weekends I like to mix up the format a bit. Enjoy!

Today I bring you a quote from the most recent novel by Rebecca Wells, which is titled Ya-Yas in Bloom. I am finding this book just as charming as the others. I love her writing style, and I feel cheered by her work, even though she deals with tough subjects like racism and child abuse.

I loved this quote, and the idea behind it: "Normally, Eddie and Washington didn't like to be seen out looking like this. They liked to look sharp. And their Aunt Willetta always fussed at them about this: ‘Don't you be going out looking nasty! Won't no girl ever kiss on you, if you all sweaty and smelly. Don't you be acting like a ten-cent self. You good handsome men. Act like it.' "

See you tomorrow!

If you have never watched or read his lecture, you should do so immediately. Randy reminded all of us to remember our childhood dreams, pursue them, help others pursue theirs and to be better and kinder to one another. He was a true inspiration and I have kept some of his lessons in the back of my head for the past few months. My favorite of his lessons, "Tell the truth. All the time." My second favorite, "Its very important to know when you're in a pissing match. And its very important to get out of it as quickly as possible." He will be missed and remembered.

Last year, Lakewood generated $76 million in revenue, which amounts to just over $1,600 for every member of its congregation. Its take includes $44 million donated directly by congregants, who are asked to give 10 percent of their gross income; $10 million in product sales and sermon tapes; and $13 million brought in through direct-mail solicitations, up from about $6 million two years ago. The church’s greatest expense is the TV airtime it buys: $22 million last year to broadcast the show in more than 100 markets, a 10 percent annual increase in spending that is easy to justify. “Cutting back on airtime would be like saying we won’t be sending any trucks to deliver our product,” [Osteen brother-in-law Kevin] Comes says [Comes is Lakewood's chief operating officer]. An additional $13 million goes to administrative costs and salaries, and $9 million a year is spent on facilities and maintenance. [. . .]

Being backstage at a Joel Osteen worship event is remarkably similar to being at an N.B.A. game or a rock concert. Beefy security guards tell you where you can and can’t go. Crew members chow down on a buffet laid out by a local caterer and bark into walkie-talkies between bites. At some point, black Town Cars head down the long, curving driveway into the belly of the arena and drop off the pastors and performers, who retreat into private suites.

The night is a celebration of music, state-of-the-art visual effects, and, of course, Christ. Lakewood spends a great deal of money attracting top gospel and Christian talent, and music minister Cindy Cruse-Ratcliff leads a team of Grammy Award winners, including gospel singer Israel Houghton. It’s a thumping occasion, with people dancing in the aisles and even the security guards singing along to “Come Just as You Are” and “We Have Overcome.” Osteen’s entire family is in the act. His mother, wife, and children often play parts in the service.

But it’s Osteen himself we have come to see. He wins the crowd over with wholesome jokes and inspires with his sweet-voiced message. The sermon today is based on the notion of “hitting the DELETE button when you have those negative thoughts.” He urges us to banish that voice telling us, “I’ll never get that great job. I’ll never meet that special someone. I’ll never get married.” Hit the delete button, he urges, and reprogram your mind. “Just one inferior thought can keep you off balance and away from your God-given destiny.”

I'm feeling introspective today- NO, who am I kidding? I'm actually feeling lazy. Too lazy to go find my camera, take pixs, download to computer to show you what I've been working on...Instead I'm gonna post about an article in Money magazine that I read this morning while still in bed, and show you a cool picture I took with my new camera. By the way, I "borrowed" that magazine from my son's guitar teacher's waiting room. I know, I know. I'm bad. I told you, Emilie, that I beg-borrow-and-steal magazines. I truly intend to return it while at his next lesson!

Anyway, the article was called, "Life Without Plastic", and it described the lives of various families after giving up EVERY credit card they owned. Then it challenged the reader to make the same choice. It said that you don't have to cancel the cards (that could be credit score suicide), but just cut them up or put them somewhere inaccessable (like frozen in a block of ice). I tell you, I am tempted to do this. Not that I have an out of control credit card spending problem- I actually pay off my balance every month (thankyou, thank you, I know- as the Nester says, "Hate me!"). However, I do see how I tend to spend much more than I intend to spend when using a credit card versus a debit card, and that can have an adverse affect on my savings account at times.

According to the writers at MONEY, here's the trouble with plastic:

1. Studies show that the average credit card user spends twice as much as the person using cash or checks.

2. Studies show that people bid more in auctions (like eBay) when using credit vs. cash.

3. Studies show that when people leaving a store are questioned about how much they just spent, they tend to not be able to remember if they used credit. However, those who paid in cash or check were able to remember better.

4. Using plastic creates a phenomenon called "decoupling". Which I understand to mean that we are mentally separating the payment from the purchase 'cause we know darn well we should not be making that purchase. So puttin' it on credit ensures that we won't be reminded of that temporary lapse in judgement for at least a month! Even then, we may not remember it 'cause when we finally get our VISA bill that pair of $75 to-die-for shoes will be safely hidden grouped with a bunch of other purchases that month, thus "diminishing the cost in our mind" according to the writers.

So whaddya think? Ready for the challenge? I say, let's do it! Let's rebel against cradit card use and go for only cash or debit. Try it for one month. See if it changes your life and your pocketbook. I took the Crown course on personal finance last year and I learned that there is actually no Biblical rationale for using credit cards (I'm sure a downer-ain't i?). Actually the Bible advises against it in several places. Here's just a few: Romans 13:8 "Owe no man any thing", Deut. 28:12 "...and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow", and God does not like you to be a slave to anyone but Him so he says, Proverbs 22:7 "Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender." I know Target probably doesn't care if we don't pay them back right away, but God cares. So we must act our wage!

The past few days have been very challenging personally. I had my final divorce affidavits notarized

The past few days have been very challenging personally. I had my final divorce affidavits notarized and mailed off. The same day I went out with the Aussie, and had a sudden moment of clarity. It was like the clouds parted, the fog in my emotional mind cleared and the light broke through. I was struck by the idea, or maybe realization, that our entire interaction was no longer right. I won't even say that he's not right, or we're not right together, it was just this sudden moment of, "Ah-ha!" and just like that it clicked. It's just not the right time. It's not working naturally any longer.

I adore him. I honestly think he adores me. But something isn't clicking, and I've tried to engage us from my end, but there's always a disconnect, a hesitancy from his. So that's it. I very kindly, very calmly, and very honestly took myself off the Aussie clearance rack. I'm Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, classic, classy, a real investment for a long, beautiful and meaningful relationship. A real article, a genuine and unique find, not a cheap cotton tanktop in the clearance bin at Ross. I'm quality. Yes, I'm an investment, but I'm worth the effort and will be around for a long time, always giving back elegance, inspiration and confidence. I've put myself back in the front display of the haute couture shop window. That's just who I am. And I finally realized my Aussie was never going to pick me up out of the clearance bin. I had to work my way through that stack of discounted rubbish and find my way back to the light, to the front window.

With that fashion inspired analogy, I give you today's thought. It's simple, kind of a mantra, an affirmation, and a thought.

There is something stirring in the world - a kind of intellectual buzz coming from seemingly nowhere

There is something stirring in the world - a kind of intellectual buzz coming from seemingly nowhere. This buzz is causing a great deal of imaginative inspiration and the uncovering of ancient truths once lost to mankind and now being re-found.
When I was writing and researching for The Serpent Grail due out in May 2005 I was acutely aware of a void in the Grail arena. Everybody, to my mind, was going down the wrong path. Bloodlines of Christ, aliens and even medieval propaganda did not explain what I had discovered. It seemed there were no others on the same trail. And then another researcher called Gary Osborn got in touch. He wanted to tell me about an incredible discovery he had made. I welcomed his thoughts as I always do. But this time I was in awe. We had both come to the same conclusions from completely different angles.
Amazed and somewhat in shock we decided to put our thoughts together to create the definitive Serpent Grail book. Before this time there was a vacuum occupied by Messrs Baigent, Leigh and Lincoln and the spurious Da Vinci Code. They were all wrong and being lead down a path that simply was not true.
As I write this monologue it seems that many disparate groups are actually now coming to similar truths that we too have come to in complete isolation.
This upsurge of “mental sparks” can only mean one thing to us – that what we have discovered is true. You see it all relates. The Jungian idea of the collective unconscious is only partly true. We say that Jung missed a big element that we will reveal through scientific means. Jung should have pushed a little more.
What we have discovered was an ancient truth that implies great upsurges in mental “coincidence” across the globe. It is a kind of liquid synchronicity of thought and has been a massive secret for hundreds of years.
Our discovery has lead us to yet more amazing discoveries and to the uncovering of hundreds of elements of ancient wisdom truths. It may be that by us moving back the stone from the tomb of the mind we have unleashed a great torrent of esoteric activity, or it may be more simple. The fact remains that when The Serpent Grail is released it will we hope, help people like us to uncover yet more mysteries of the ancients.
For more information or to book the authors for events in 2005/2006 see www.gardinerosborn.com.
Why is Randy Pausch one of the most important people you could ever listen to in your life? He is the essence of living your dream, deconstructing and obliterating obstacles, and if there was a picture next to the word "courage" in the dictionary it would be Randy's picture. I never knew the man personally but I feel like he is my friend--just a friend I had not met yet.

Life Pioneer

Randy Paush was a life pioneer, an inner architect of the truest sense, who valued and coveted his time here like nobody I have ever witnessed. You can not help but be touched or greatly effected by Randy Pausch. If you watch his greatest triumph the last lecture the youtube video of his final lecture "Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" performed September 18, 2007 before a packed house at Carnegie Mellon University, you begin to understand the message: live life embrace your obstacles and triumph through your will
