Robin Smith has gone down a long traveled road to pursue her music career. Quite literally too, moving from East Grand Forks, Minnesota to the Live Music Capital of the World. Even though she had never been to Austin, Robin has been singing all her life, and packed up to do what she loves. She is a folk singer/songwriter and has played solo as well as with other artists, even doing a set during SXSW last year. You can find her at venues such as Momo’s and Flipnotics. Our music city has been a great establisher for folk singers in the past. With talented performances and feel-good lyrics, Robin is soon to be the crowd favorite. And record companies: she hasn’t signed with anyone yet. Just a heads-up!

What’s your musical background?

I never took any guitar lessons or voices lessons. I always wanted to be a singer since the time I can remember. Throughout High School I was in Choir and even some Musicals but never was a lead in any play or had a solo. I always wanted to play an instrument, but my mother could never afford lessons, much less the instrument. Finally on my 18th birthday my older sister surprised me with a guitar that she had bought with her own money. It was an electric guitar, and I had no amp, but I taught myself on it nonetheless, sitting day and night writing. Finally, when I turn 19, I traded that guitar in for an acoustic.

Who are your musical influences? 

I’d have to say Patty Griffin, Johnny Cash, Ani Difranco. 

Do you have a favorite Austin area band or musician? 

I don’t. I have a lot of friends who are performers here, and all their music hits me the most. Probably because I know them, and so I know the stories behind their music and the heart that’s in it. IF I had to answer that I would give these names Kalu James, Josh Halverson, Douglas Jay Boyd, Miguel Briones and Aly Tadros.

Have you been on any tours?

About 6 months after moving to Austin a musician friend (Drew Nix) and I went on a small Texas tour that included Houston, Waco, Pittsburg, Dallas and Fort Worth.

How would you describe your music? Do you use any specific genre?

I usually say it’s acoustic folk-rock when asked, but to be honest, I don’t ever try to write in a specific genre. Some of my songs sound pop, some sound alternative. Whatever I am feeling is what is written down, but I would say most of my songs are under the Folk-Rock genre. 

If there was one song you’ve written to completely describe yourself, which would it be? Which of your songs is your favorite? 

I would say Weightless because it’s about growing in life through relationships with people in general and gaining and losing strength, which is one thing I have struggled with. My favorite song always changes because I think, like all musicians, I get sick of my songs. But right now my favorite song is a song called Bonded. 

If people wanted to get their hands on some of your music, what should they do?

What is your educational background? Have you studied anything in particular? 

I didn’t study music at all in college; I actually went to school to be a Cardiovascular Technician.

Besides music, do you have any other passions? What do you like to do for fun? 

I love to write! I write books for children and am also working on a script for a movie. I love photography and to hike.
