Si en el último tiempo algo le faltaba a Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland, mejor dicho) era enfrentarse a entes paranormales. El director galo Alexandre Aja (de la sobrevalorada Alta Tensión) es el encargado de  The Mirrors, película que se dedica a revisar la historia de una familia atormentada por un maligno ser que ronda por su casa, mientras utiliza los espejos para armar la partuza. Su estreno en Estados Unidos es en Agosto, aunque por este lado del mundo se supone que llegará en Octubre o, quizás, de lleno no llega al cine. Nada sorprendente, bendito DVD.

Faz parte do grupo de pessoas (como eu) que ficou decepcionado com o primeiro trailer do thriller de terror Mirrors, protagonizado por Kiefer Sutherland? Sim? Veja então o novo trailer ontem divulgado e bastante melhor que o anterior...

Mirrors conta a história de um ex-polícia (Sutherland) que agora trabalha como segurança num centro comercial e cuja família começa a sofrer os singulares efeitos de uns espelhos que guardam terríveis segredos. No elenco, para além de Sutherland, estão também as actrizes Amy Smart (Efeito Borboleta) e Paula Patton. O francês Alexandre Aja realiza.

Mirrors estreia nos EUA a 15 de Agosto próximo.

Also, does anyone else think that Alejandra Aja would've been a much better choice to direct Silent Hill? Also also, they seem to be giving away the fate of several key characters in this trailer, no?

Nuevo y Red Band trailer de la nueva versión de “Into the Mirror”, esta vez dirigida por Alexandre Aja. Mucho se había hablado acerca de si la película era o no demasiado sangrienta, en este trailer se ve que tal vez tenga pocas escenas, pero son algo explicitas.

The setting is New Zealand in the mid-19th century. Britain is busy expanding it’s Empire and the Maori tribes of New Zealand are busy trying to resist. Caught up in the midst of this struggle are Samantha Morton (playing Irish), Kiefer Sutherland (playing Oirish) and Cliff Curtis (playing Maori). Morton has a son from a love affair with a Maori tribesman. She calls her son Boy because this is a Vincent Ward movie. At age five, Boy is kidnapped by his paternal grandfather. Morton searches for him for many years, almost surrendering to his loss. But on the eve of a great battle between the Maoris and the British, Cliff Curtis asks Morton to come “up river” – into the Maori heartlands. Only there – he tells her – will she and Boy be reunited.

There are troubled productions and there are Troubled productions and then there’s River Queen. Whoo boy. Short of bubonic plague breaking out on set, everything possible went wrong with this production. It’s star, Samantha Morton, fell sick. It’s director was fired. It’s budget was squandered. It was all Vincent Ward’s fault, of course. I’m not so starry-eyed that I don’t see the man has failings. Tales from the set have him wandering off into the forest, shooting days’ worth of leaves – leaving his stars unattended. He had spent the better part of his production budget after two weeks – so it goes – with nothing to show for it but lovingly-photographed foliage. And so he was replaced by his cinematographer and the movie became, in Morton’s words, “a film without a director”.

How can this turn out well? Well, it didn’t – to be blunt. River Queen has such an excess of voice-over that it’s a wonder when a scene doesn’t need explanation. The movie has a patchwork quality (as you might expect) and performances vary from very good (Morton) to hide-behind-a-beard bad (Sutherland). The story doesn’t make much sense and Samantha Morton’s motivation is sound as kitty litter – and yet… River Queen is worth watching. It’s worth it because of those few bits of Vincent Ward that are still in it: a shot of Morton lying in a Maori canoe at night, her face like a candle; or the scene where Kiefer Sutherland has died and a yellow bird perched on his chest becomes (for us) his soul.

I met Samantha Morton at the Edinburgh Film Festival last year, and I asked her about this movie. She didn’t know if it would be released. Morton, in person, is prickly but lovable. She destroyed her interviewer in Edinburgh, so if you meet her, my advice is: don’t say she plays “difficult women”. River Queen could have been something big for Morton, so it’s a pity it didn’t get a theatrical release. Her character allows her to show a maternal side that’s natural to her and her face, as ever, is beautiful because it can’t conceal. She has no co-star, really. Cliff Curtis chops his finger off, and we still don’t know who he is. Kiefer Sutherland puts on an Irish accent that’s so abominable you wonder if it’s for a bet. But Morton is incapable of poor acting. Plus she looks great in a tunic.

There are those who want movies to be good and those who don’t care about good, only that there is life in movies. I might criticise a movie for poor storytelling, or for bad acting, or a lousey script, but I’m prepared to ignore all that if a movie – even once – catches the beauty of life. There are a dozen shots, in my opinion, that save River Queen. Whether it’s the bird on Kiefer Sutherland’s chest, or the scene where Morton gets a Maori tattoo. There’s just enough left of Ward’s vision, just enough weight to Morton’s performance, that despite the voice-over track and the scenes shot for nothing and happy ending that makes no sense…You will see something in this movie. Like Ward’s “wooden planet”, it's a poetic mistake.

Come parziale compromesso, per venire incontro ai fan di Jack Bauer, si è pensato a un tv-movie della durata di due ore, che possa raccontare gli avvenimenti intercorsi tra la sesta e la settima stagione (che non prenderà ufficialmente il via prima di gennaio 2009).

Il film, ambientato in parte in Sud Africa, vedrà Jack alle prese con una crisi internazionale (tanto per cambiare), mentre negli Stati Uniti si elegge il nuovo presidente. Howard Gordon, produttore esecutivo dello show, non nasconde il suo entusiasmo: “Siamo molto emozionati a causa di questo prequel, perché esplora il complesso stato emotivo di Jack e tuttavia ha ancora tutta l’eccitazione e la suspense che i fan si aspettano da ‘24′. La location sudafricana è un’ulteriore conferma della nostra volontà di rendere questa stagione particolarmente memorabile per i nostri spettatori.”

Per quanto riguarda il Day 7 vero e proprio, invece, tutto rimane confermato: ci sarà un presidente donna, vedremo il ritorno di Tony Almeida e il CTU non sarà più il fulcro delle operazioni, come conseguenza dello spostamento a Washington.

A match made in cyber-security, counter-terrorism heaven, we say. Kiefer! In the name of all that's right and good. Make the call! We're begging you.

As vezes assisto uma série e fico bobo como alguns atores incorporam tão bem alguns personagens, mas admito que sou cético em relação ao talento deles. Atores consagrados como Hugh Laurie, Kiefer Sutherland, e até mesmo a mulher da minha vida, Kristen Bell, não me dão certeza que conseguem desenvolver personagens diferentes do que eles fizeram com seus papeis mais importantes, House, Jack Bauer e Veronica Mars, respectivamente. Mas há atores como Johnny Deep, James Spader, e Fernanda Montenegro, que sempre conseguem me surpreender, indo além do que eu imaginava que eles fossem capaz de ir, e acredite, eu muitas vezes já achei que eles chegaram no limite e tempo depois era surpreendido por uma outra grande atuação deles.

Mas por que estou falando isso aqui?

Comecei a devorar a primeira temporada de Six Feet Under agora, O que me faz cada dia mais me arrepender de não ter seguido as recomendações de seriados que Pedro Beck e Paulo Antunes faziam anos atrás , mas isso não vem ao caso agora. Assisti quatro episódios de Six Feet Under e estou achando sensacional, pra quem ainda não viu, mas procura uma boa série, dêem uma chance a ela, quer um incentivo? a série é do escritor de Beleza Americana.

E bom, eu não vou falar de Six Feet Under(ainda), mas eu queria falar sobre 2 atores na série. Hoje, eles são consagrados nos Estados Unidos, mas foi em Six Feet Under que eles ganharam respeito, estou falando de Rachel Griffiths e Michael C. Hall. Qualquer seriemaníaco sabe que Rachel dá um show atualmente em Brothers And Sisters, num elenco extremamente competente, ela muitas vezes  ainda consegue roubar a cena. E C. Hall, não lembro onde li, criou o serial killer que superou o mais famoso de todos, Hannibal Lecter, interpretado magistralmente por Anthony Hopkins. E com certeza, isso é pra poucos, muito poucos.

Mas você deve está se perguntando, "o que esse cara ta querendo dizer?" simples, Quando hoje em dia escuto falarem bem de C. Hall e Griffiths, eu penso "tá bom, são atores bons, mas devem ser igual a Laurie, Sutherland e etc...", mas não, eles não são. Em Six Feet Under, os dois estão completamente diferente da mal amada Sarah e do Psicopata Dexter. Sério, em nenhum momento(talvez com exceção no piloto) eu fiquei assistindo a série imaginando que estivesse vendo Dexter ou Sarah,  e assim comprovei que eles são ótimos atores. E pra melhorar ainda mais, revi meu conceito e começo a achar que Laurie, Sutherland, e principalmente Bell podem fazer muito mais do que já fizeram(e que não foi pouco), e eu vou ficar aqui torcendo pra que eles comprovem seus talentos, vocês não?

Foi divulgado o primeiro poster do filme Mirrors, do realizador francês Alexandre Aja e que conta com Kiefer Sutherland no elenco.

O cartaz é ligeiramente cliché e sem grande produção. No entanto, será o poster um prenúncio do filme?

A história do filme (remake de um filme coreano de 2003), escrita por Grégory Levesseur, gira em torno de um grupo de espíritos de outra dimensão que aterrorizam as pessoas através de espelhos, tal como indica o título do filme.

No elenco podemos contar com Kiefer Sutherland (24), Amy Smart (Starsky & Hutch) e Paula Patton (Déja Vu), entre outros.

Mirrors estreia nos EUA no dia 15 de Agosto.

Hasta arriba, y como debe ser el lema de haber sido el director de “The Hills Have Eyes”, demostrando que los remakes pueden ser muy buenos. La película se estrena el 15 de Agosto en Estados Unidos, y aun no hay fecha de estreno en México.

Growing up, I was a huge fan of the original Lost Boys movie. In this comic series, the story turns and focuses on the Frog Brothers and their lives post-Lost Boys. Basically, these two have stayed in the fictitious city of Santa Carla and continue fighting the good fight. Along the way they find out that they didn’t actually kill the head vamp in the events of the movie, so they now need to act fast if their home town is to be saved.

The writing in this book is top notch. The dialogue remains in tune with the movie right down to the terminology. It’s funny, and at times scary, with good twists and turns - the biggest of which is the reveal of the true head-vamp. I won’t say who it is, but fans of the movie will be floored when they read it. Having seen the movie (many times) it didn’t make sense right away, but a little inconsistency is forgivable since every vampire story has its own take on the mythos.

The art here is a little confusing. There isn’t a lot of detail in the character’s faces so it’s hard to tell a lot of them apart. The vampire, David (played by Kiefer Sutherland in the movie), still has that ridiculous spikey-haired mullet, which is a great throw back to the 1980s. Unfortunately, the rest of the art isn't as detailed or stylized as the cover, which depending on your taste, can be a bad thing. Throughout the book Joel Gomez uses the visual tool of a red silhouette over a black background to great effect - this I liked. It highlights both the action and gore as well.

Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs is a great read for anyone who liked the movie. It has the same cult, classic feel that made the movie so much fun. One thing I really enjoyed is the fact that the paper feels like old school newsprint - not the glossy pages we're now accustomed to. It may have been a budget thing, or a style choice, but it’s fun either way. If you liked the movie, buy this comic! (Grade: B)

Jamison Newlander também volta, como Alan Frog. Os irmãos Frog continuam caçando vampiros, só que desta vez o vilão não será Kiefer Sutherland. No seu lugar, a WB contratou o meio-irmão do ator, Angus Sutherland. Autumn Reeser (The O.C.) e Tad Hilgenbrink também estão no elenco.

Pros: Decent actors

Cons: No real storyline here, only 7 main actors through the whole film. Pretty slow.

Verdict: I didn’t even know what I was getting when I picked this up. I’m sure some people might like this film but it’s not my cup of tea. If you’re curious rent it, unless it’s cheaper than a rent (was when I picked it up) then just add it to your collection to have.

Tonight I might actually try to record two movies on to my DVD recorder. TV6 is showing The Vanishing from 1993 with Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland & Sandra Bullock.

Followed by Dazed and Confused from 2003 by Richard Linklater which includes a whole bunch of cool music and familiar faces.

Yeah, I gotta get back into shape re: acting.  No one wants to hire a gorgeous overweight chick.  Plus a friend of mine has encouraged me (sort of) to purchase a small bass amp and I'm going to work on my bass playing.  Maybe if I get halfway decent enough (and thin enough), I can join a band and go on the road and get the fuck outta here for a while....

A girl can dream, can't she?  Yeah, it's pretty obvious I can't sleep.  I'm watching Day 3 of "24" and I'm on the edge of my seat.  Kiefer Sutherland is DREAMY.  He should call me.  We have alot of lushy things in common, I hear through my LA grapevine...
