Google added text-to-speech capabilities to some Knol articles, like the one titled “File Formats

Google added text-to-speech capabilities to some Knol articles, like the one titled “File Formats in Digital Photography”. You can download the MP3 as well as hit a Listen button in the top right. The quality of the speech output – I strongly suppose it’s all a software reading indeed, but asked Google for more background info in any case – is amazing. Macbeach in the comments at Google Operating System writes, “This is the best text-to-speech I’ve ever heard."*

Knol’s help page on the subject explains, “We are experimenting with Audio Playback as an option for some knols, starting with a handful of English language featured knols ... If this experiment is successful, we may make Audio Playback available to more knols in additional languages, and additional features.”

Both text-to-speech as in Knol, and speech-to-text as in YouTube (experimental too right now, and only working with videos of some US politicians), offer the ability to add capabilities to an application which may convince some people to use it just for that feature. Here are some hypothetical use cases for outputting audio in Google’s apps:

Read out aloud a Google Docs document, spreadsheet, or presentation

Read a Gmail email

Read a public domain book scanned as part of Google Book Search

Automatically translate the audio track of YouTube videos; the parts needed would be transcription (Google already has speech to text in YouTube), translation (Google has machine translation systems, sometimes working OK, sometimes not so well), and then text-to-speech as in Knol

Read web pages as part of Google Chrome

Provide audio directions in Google Maps

Provide the “Listen” widget for Blogspot blogs; this could also be used as a way to create machine-read podcasts

and more

[Thanks Hebbet, via Google OS!]

Men man misslyckas tyvärr ibland.

Whenever I come across something interesting, I’d say to myself: ‘I need to blog about this’. But then the day goes on and I find myself getting trapped in my bottomless list-to-dos. So I am taking matters into my own hands and going just blog about the random things that I want to share. Let’s call it Kadidid thoughts. Warning: These thoughts have no common relationship. For those who knows me, my thoughts are typically random as my mind goes a million miles a minute.

Google has recently introduced Google Knol, Google Chrome & Google Android mobile OS. Google Knol was introduced as a sort of competitor to Wikipedia. However, one can find many spam content in it. Also the Google Chrome, the web browser by Google has not found many takers. Google had kept the development of Chrome a secret & its introduction took the tech community by surprise. It has some good features compared to IE & other browsers. However, the interest in both the Knol & Chrome is going down. Most of the prodcuts of Google are in Beta. It is not just releasing a product but maintaining it through its growth phase is also important. Google sometimes back launched Google answers & had to shut it down. This shows how even a Great brand like Google finds it difficult to successfully carry on a service. Google through its vast data & its core competency of Search could have made Google answers a great service. Ultimately it had to close the Google answers. Google is spreading too thin in all the areas. Google has recently completed 10 years & is already attracting the DOJ Concern over its Google & Yahoo ad deal. Many have expressed concern over the ad deal & google will dominate the online adspace.

"In 50 or 100 years, when the real histories of the internet get written, it will start with those two boys." - Andrew Keen

Ten years ago two students formally formed Google Inc. at a friend's garage as a research project. Two Stanford Ph.D. students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, started the project because they were unhappy with current search technology. Today their company is the world's fastest growing company and worth £75 billion, with more than £2 billion profit last year alone.

Now Google will celebrate its tenth anniversary.

Brands expert Simon Myers, boss at consultancy firm Figtree, told The Sun: "It's amazing that they have got to the top of so many brand rankings in just ten years. Google is a very successful because it has a clear purpose - to make searching the internet as quick and as easy as possible. They have put the user first."

Yet talking about the launch of Google, the company almost didn't happen as they struggled for two years to get funding for their project. But the first funding was secured when Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, gave them a cheque for $100,000 made out to a corporation which did not yet exist.

A decade later Google seems out to world domination. Since 2001, Google has acquired several small start-up companies. In February 2003, Google acquired Pyra Labs, creators of Blogger, a weblog publishing platform.

Two years ago they bought up the popular online video site YouTube for $1.65 billion. The company just launched a new web browser called Google Chrome to challenge Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Its online encyclopedia, Knol, is a challenger to Wikipedia.

Back in 2006, the verb, "google", was officially added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary, meaning, "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet."

http://knol.google.com/k#

Some say it is an attack on Wikipedia, others disagree. Either way - intriguing to read the Wikipedia article on Google's Knol...

This is one way to learn how the Wikipedia community reacts. Another one is to go to the test environment of Wikipedia (test.wikipedia.org), and see what the Wikipedians are up to....

Bron

Echter "Writing well is hard, especially without editors." Samenwerking levert dus betere kwaliteit.

Knowledge as in KNOL - the new Google Encyclopedia of sorts is online and after what seemed like a slow start is starting to get pretty busy.

I can say this because when I did my first "knol" on Internet Marketing on Aug. 1, 2008 there were only around 20 "knols" that came up when you searched for "internet marketing".

Right now I just checked and it had 1498 results for internet marketing. Yipes... that's what I call growth spurting! Holy molee!

Now, as far as what contributing a knol will do for you is yet unkown. I can't honestly say my contributed has had any impact. I guess I will write a few more butfor the most part it seems a waste of time.

Maybe when Knol getsto be an authority like wikipedia and is "the authority" that may change. we'll have to keep an eye on Google Knol - and wait and see!

Everyone that has ever been online knows Google. Google has become so big that it is not just a sear

Everyone that has ever been online knows Google. Google has become so big that it is not just a search engine and a corporation, but a verb. People don´t say look it up on the web, but Google it. So I ask the question: to Google, or not to Google? That is the question.

Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin on September 7th 1998. The two students from Stanford University started Google with just 100,000 dollars. And over the past 10 years they have built it in to a multi billion dollar corporation. August 19th Google went on the stock exchange, making it worth 23 billion dollars. Today it is worth an outstanding 179,07 billion US dollars.

So how does Google make money? It sell advertisements associated with search keywords. Say for example you type in the word car, it will find links for you. If you look to right after you have done a search you will see the payed links, or ads. But Google doesn´t just make money with these links, Google owns many other internet sites and applications. Google make money from normal ads here as well.

So which web sites and services does Google own/provide?

Here is a list on most of them:

www.Google.com Google´s search engine.

Google News Automated news aggregator

Google Product Search Price comparison service

Google Groups Discussion website

Google Spreadsheets Web-based word processor

Google Maps Offers street maps, a route planner

Gmail E-mail service

Google Video It´s own version of Youtube

Google Sites wiki Helps small-businesses have their own website

Google Desktop A desktop search for your own computer

Google.org Charitable arm of the Google´s search engine

Picasa Software app. for organizing and editing digital photos

Orkut Social network service

Google Earth Virtual globe, uses satellite imagery, aerial photography and GIS 3D

Google Moon Shows satellite images of the Moon

Google Mars Shows pictures of Mars

Google Labs Shows Google´s up and coming projects

Google Checkout Online payment processing service

Google Book Search Search engine for books that Google are scanning

Knol Described as a complement to Wikipedia

SketchUP 3D modeling program

Youtube Google bought YouTube for 1,65 billion in 2006.

Google China Google´s search engine for Chinese users

Google Chrome Open source web browser

Even though Google has all these sites/services it is still primarily a search engine. And is the biggest of all search engines.

Here is Google market share:

Worldwide 59,7%

USA 42%

UK 75%

Australia 80%

Belgium 85%

France 85%

The Netherlands 91%

Germany 91%

Spain 99%

Is Google to big for it´s own good? Do we want a monopoly on internet searches? Do we want one search engine to tell us what is relevant to our searches? If Google wanted to keep some information from us they could. I doubt they will ever do that to us, but that is exactly what they are doing to the Chinese. Google China was invented for the Chines people. The Chinese government keeps a tight rein on the internet. And control what the Chinese people can and can not access. For Google to get greater access to the Chinese market they had to agree to some cencorship. Google has come under criticism for censoring its search services in China. This what the BBC had to say: Google censors itself for China. Here is some more info: wikipedia, google china.

This is Google´s response to the the criticism: While removing search results is inconsistent with Google´s mission, providing no information... is more inconsistent with our mission. Every single search on Google gets recorded, every keyword saved. Google say they do this so that the can provide the Did you mean: ..... feature. When you type in a keyword, and change it so that it is spelt write Google remembers it for next time. These records of typed keywords are saved in a huge database indefinitely. Do you want Google to keep a record of all your searches? Some people say that each IP address has a database with the search keywords from that computer. I that is true i don´t know, but i it is true it´s not good news.

So how does the search engine work? Well, when you type in your keyword its find web pages that have that word in them. After it has found them it has to rank them. The pages are ordered by what the search engine thinks is most relevant. But how does it think?. The entire Google search engine is basically just a bunch of algorithms. Mathematics put in a sequence to make instructions. For example, when ranking the algorithms look at how many ingoing links every page has. The more incoming links a page has there more relevant i becomes. But i doesn´t stop there. The incoming links to the incoming are also counted. This goes on and on. Thats the simple version.

Did you mean: ....... Is something that often pops up when using Google. It is a kind of spelling corrector. On online dictionary. Lets says you spell your keyword wrong, Google comes up with it believes you are looking for. This is a very helpful service that Google provides. I used it many times myself while writing this post. But have you ever wounded how the search engine knows what you meant?Do you have Gmail? If you do, did you know that Google copies all of you e-mails. Google´s privacy policy says; residual copies of deleted messages and accounts may take up to 60 days to be deleted from our active servers and may remain in our offline backup systems in perpetuity. Read this link: Google subpoenaed to turn over deleted Gmail messages

Google has lots of info. on its users. Maybe to much. They say they don´t misuse this info. I personally don´t think they are misusing it, but just the storage of info may temp third parties to get hold of this info. Some years back the US government asked Google to hand over keyword search info. Google denied to do so. Here they stood up for their users wrights, and I hope they will do so in the future also.

At the moment Google is building a large book library. It is helping many Universities and libraries to digitally copy there books. The idea is to make as many books a possibly available online. This is a very good thing. But what if one corporation gets hold of most of the world book online. And then starts to charge people to view them. It´s not just Google doing this, many other companies and non profit org. are digitalising books. The worlds books are from the people. for the people. They should all come together to make a digital world library online.

Google Earth is a very cool service. You can move around the whole world, and look at what you want. But as all technology this has also been abused. You can see in people gardens, and some people have taken advantage of this.

Google Earth Pool-Crashing Parties Latest Teen Craze. You cant blame Google for this, but do you want to let everyone look at your properties?

This week Google launch there newest branch on the Google tree, Google Chrome. Just on day after its launch, Google´s web browser had 1% on the market. That is amazing in just one day, this shows Google power. Google tok én prosent på ett døgn.

Well there are my thoughts on Google. I would just like to say, that I an not picking on Google. I use Google on a daily basis, it´s search engine, Google Earth and SketchUp. Google is a very innovative company, and come up with many helpful features. I´m just wondering if Google has to much power. Do we want one company having so much influence? Google hasn´t abused it´s power, yet (that we know of, not that I think they have). Google´s own corporate motto is Don´t be evil. Lets hope that is always the case.

The purpose of today’s short blog is to draw further attention (where necessary) to three stimulating and informative articles by a senior IT expert and former Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious magazine PC World, Harry McCracken. The 3 timely contributions raise two separate but connected issues concerning the Google colossus: its voracious appetite for IT projects in very different fields and the recent unveiling to netizens of the beta version of Google’s penultimate tentacle, Knol, as a new (and commercial) competitor in the online encyclopedia market. (And only a few days ago the IT world witnessed the baptism of their Chrome Browser...)

In just under a year, McCracken has shared his changing views about Knol on three occasions:

a basically negative reception of the announcement of the Knol project:

16 December 2007: Knol: ‘Google Ennui Sets In, at Least For Me’;

an optimistic greeting of the recent launch of the first Knol beta offerings:

23 July 2008: ‘Knol’s Well: Google’s Encyclopedia Looks Cool’;

an expression of doubts about perceived weaknesses and inconsistencies in the Knol project based on a small sample of comparisons between the larger number of Knols currently available and Wikipedia offerings:

1 September 2008: ‘Google’s Knol: So Far, Not So Good’.

If you have not read Harry’s evidence and arguments contained in the latest of these three (which provides links to the two previous articles), I strongly recommend it to you.

Google’s Knol: So Far, Not so Good.

Of particular interest is that although, as McCracken admits, his opinion has twice veered sharply, there is a consistency in his concerns that in addition to its phenomenally successful stellar enterprises, Google has shown a tendency to launch projects which do not achieve the sort of resounding success that Google Search and Google Maps, for example, have garnered. McCracken’s reservation is that, although he still feels the idea of Knol is cool, on the present preliminary evidence, there is reasonable cause to suspect that Knol may end up as one of that second category.

Just one short quotation to whet your appetite further:

“…Google is better at getting things started than finishing them. Services like Google Base and Google Page Creator remain rough drafts at best, eons after they debuted. Even a company with resources as vast as Google can’t do everything and do everything well.”

In the two days following that blog article on 1 September 2008, Harry has already posted a barrage of articles about Google’s launch of the beta of their Chrome Web Browser project.

Perhaps he never sleeps.
