There are lots of sites where you can post your music and one of the ways people find you is when they are looking for people who sound similar to one of their favourite artists. MySpace has that feature. Last FM is built around that concept.

Last FM is like your own personal radio station that tries to come up with the music you like. It's free, which is great and when you listen to music you can rate it, love it or ban it and the station will eventually evolve into exactly the kind of music you like. You can get it to start playing music by selecting an artist or a topic. If you want to listen to songs about Christmas, just key in Christmas, if you want to listen to my songs or artists like me, select artist and enter Luigi Cappel.

As a songwriter, artist or band, you can set up your own site where you can upload your music and videos and people can listen to your music. Just go to the Music Manager section and start creating your page. I have 1 1/2 albums up there so far. Greenhouse and Reflections which is only half complete so far.

So here's the problem. I have entered 3 artists who have influenced me, particularly on certain songs. They are Don Henly (in particular my song Only Memories Survive), Willie Nelson and Jimmy Webb. The problem I have is in being objective when I listen to myself. So perhaps you can have a listen to some of my songs on one of my sites and tell me who you think I sound like. You can here them at Last FM by entereing my name, you can hear some at MySpace and more at Music Forte.

If you can be bothered, it would be great if you can give me feedback on what artists you think I sound like so I can add them into my sites to help people who like those artists find me. I'll be happy to return the favor of course.

There are many benefits of understanding who you are like. If you know who you sound like, you can look for gigs where people like that kind of music. You can get a better idea of who to pitch your songs to as a songwriter and you can guide potential fans to your music online.

So today I was (window) shopping at Forever 21 when Mystery Jets' Young Love came on. Seriously this store always play some of my favorite songs when I'm in there. I find myself singing along too to the despair of my fellow customers. Not that they say anything but I wouldn't want to hear me singing. Anyways it made me happy. Go Forever 21 for their soundtrack.

Oh this weekend I realized my bangs were pretty shitty so I asked my roommate to cut them. They turned out pretty okay! Best of all it was FREE. Now I just have to look at the pile of hair in our trash can until we take it out. Good thing we used the bathroom one because I knocked the other one over. Oh small college dorms with clumsy inhabitants! Someone get me one of those mansions like the ones on Million Dollar Listing STAT!!!

In other news, last week I found out this guy that I like on campus's name. Was that even correct English? If only I had the balls to talk to him besides helping him at my job. God I need help! Is anyone out there? ANYONE? I think I'm going to go listen to Lightspeed Champion now so I know I'm not the only person out there ... right after I finish listening to Youthmovies that is. Speaking of which I need to expand my music collection because it's limited compared to other peoples' on Last FM and such. I'm sad I can't listen to my new iPod because apparently I need the adapter for my speakers. It better work once I bring it from home because I will be really upset if it doesn't. I'll just turn the volume up and listen to it that way. I'm so fucking cheap it's ridiculous.

Off I go to write a book review for class that I told myself I was going to be good and write this weekend. Who am I fucking kidding? All I did was get stranded in some ghetto (worse than my own mind you), shop, and try to develop pictures to no avail. You know the usual.

When listening to music again today, I came across a song where it said the artist was 'blandade artister' (Swedish for various artists). My last.fm scrobbler program had information about them, and it was tagged as 'misstagged', which is quite right, but then it was also tagged 'swedish', also that is reasonable because it is the Swedish translation of various artists.

Now comes the fun part. The last two tags says that it's 'Finnish rick' and 'suomi rock'. HAHA! It can be any type of music, not limited to only rock. I wonder what user put that description there xD

I've been using Last FM seriously for about six months now and find its statistics fun and enlightening, as well as nice for finding out new artists.

I took Anthony Liekens' Super Eclectic Test, a quite simple statistic for finding how similar your top 50 listened artists are to each other by searching for common "similar artists".

The concept is that by taking 20 similar artists from each of your 50 top listened artists, you end up with a potential pool of 1000 artists, assuming there is absolutely no overlap between any of them. The more similar your top artists are, the more common artists they have that overlap, reducing your overall score.

Anything over 700 is considered eclectic. I managed 757/1000 as of today, so I can officially say I have eclectic tastes.

So, I appear to be in the most eclectic 6 or 7%... Yay for me.

Unfortunately, I noticed a trend in the way Last FM labels foreign artists: Every female Japanese artist I have in my library is considered similar to every other Japanese female artist in my library!

I guess they just label all Japanese stuff as similar, like old people who say stuff like, "All Chinese look the same."

It's a bit sad that this sort of indiscriminate grouping exists considering this is a music site. I can only hope they realise at some point that Nakajima Miyuki (50 something cabaret/ballad singer) and Utada Hikaru (20 something R&B / Pop singer) have about as much in common as I have with Henry Ford.

An article based on this interview appears in Beat Happening magazine.
Greg Saunier of San Francisco

An article based on this interview appears in Beat Happening magazine.

Greg Saunier of San Francisco's perma touring Deerhoof answers some questions on the eve of the release of their latest LP 'Offend Maggie'.

Where and when was ‘Offend Maggie’ written? Was it an easy birth or a troubled conception?

Actually with us it’s always the other way around…an easy conception but a troubled birth. Getting the ideas for songs in the first place is like falling off a log, you know… stuff just pops into your head, and there it is! Even learning to play it isn’t so difficult, but recording it so that it sort of matches what was in your head in the first place, ooh that’s a tough one. Always takes a long time, and the more you work on it (we mix everything ourselves on computer) the easier it is to forget what your first idea actually was…

Who is Maggie and why do you wish to offend her? What’s the concept behind the album? ‘Friend Opportunity’ dealt a lot with personal relationships and the way they act, does ‘Offend Maggie’ continue this introvert theme or is it a more extrovert record?

The record is about offending Maggie but that doesn’t mean it’s Deerhoof doing the offending – we’re just telling the story you see. Not to cop out but I always hope that our records are both introvert and extrovert depending on when you listen to them. The best way to understand what the title is about is to hear the music, see the cover art, read the lyrics – each of them explains the rest of them…

Following the permanent addition of Ed (Rodriguez) how has the dynamic of the band shifted and how did his presence feed into the writing process?

Ed kind of unintentionally forced us to write and record more like a real band, instead of a collection of songwriters and their session musicians. We never recorded this way, even though it’s the usual way for bands – where we rehearsed the songs together at full volume for a couple months before we recorded anything, so that by the time the recording session happened, we were totally prepared and could play them all together instead of piecemeal and like a big experiment.

You released the sheet music for ‘Fresh Born’ following the Prospect Park Show, so people could record their own versions. What was the thinking behind this and what have been the best results?

I just thought it would be fun. It could be a neat way to get to know the song before you even heard the record. The surprise was that it turned out to be way more fun than I expected. So many people sent their recordings of it, and they really run the gamut of styles and approaches when you listen to them all. I’m more amazed than ever by our fans!

You’ve asked fans to vote for a cause to receive a portion of the profits from your digital sales. What was the genesis of this idea and how did you select the organisations on the list?

Well we always thought it made sense to donate some of our money but we just never were organized enough before, so this time we planned ahead. Part of it was that we wanted people to have at least a little bit of a feeling that the money they were spending wasn’t just disappearing into some sort of vague “music industry”, but could be traced to a specific destination that maybe was one they actually would be happy about anyway.

You’re coming back to play ATP again in December following on from your amazing appearance at the Release The Bats show last year. What can fans expect from the show and will there be any general changes to the way you approach this record live?

Oh you saw that? That was fun, Satomi made costumes. We’re playing University of London Union and it was set up by ATP (they are our label in the UK) but we aren’t playing ATP this time. Now that Ed is in the band we have two guitars so you can expect six more strings – that sounds like a joke now that I wrote it but it’s true, it sounds different when you can get that much going on in the guitar department.

The video from Tokyo of “The music and tears of love” is immense! How has the ‘Offend Maggie’ material been going down?

Real smooth. We’re lucky because since we’ve always changed our sound so much on the records, the people who come to our shows are very forgiving and don’t really expect one exact style or set of songs. They come to listen and a band couldn’t ask for anything more.

‘Friend Opportunity’ represented a more layered and experimental Deerhoof than ‘The Runners Four’ is ‘Offend Maggie a continuation of this?

Yeah, I agree FO was more layered although I’m not sure that made it more of an experiment. TR4 was most definitely a massive experiment as far as the experience of making it. So much so that it practically broke up the band, and actually ultimately did… So Offend Maggie was a little like TR4 because we worked so much of it out at full volume in the rehearsal studio (as opposed to on computer, or in our heads). But instead of recording the process of working it out, we worked it out first and then went and recorded it. I think it ends up sounding both more effortless and more like one of our live concerts as a result. But I could be wrong!

As an American band what are your views on the impending election in November? I read Gregs ‘Why Obama? essay and wondered if you were alarmed by the shift of momentum following Palin’s addition to the Republican ticket?

I expected it to be short-lived and it was short-lived. Palin’s extreme right wing views couldn’t be more different from mine but I have to admit that her popularity has a lot in common with Obama’s popularity, which is that people can relate to her (or him), much more so than to the average politician. I’ve already had friendships destroyed because of my political endorsements, not because anyone preferred McCain because they think it’s wack to endorse any presidential candidate. While I can understand the sentiment I have to disagree: One million dead Iraqis later, I do think a single presidential administration can wreak massive havoc and misery upon the world. All signs point to McCain being more extreme, not less, than Bush on his hawkish foreign policy.

In these days of Last FM, Youtube, Myspace, file sharing and the ilk how do you consume new music?

We tour a lot so actually I get to hear new music a lot on the plane. I’ve made so many massive musical discoveries that way. Recently I listened to Mavis Staples’ latest album “We Will Never Turn Back” and was moved to tears. So I bought it on iTunes when I got home. That’s pretty much it in the last couple of months. I really only listen to music about once every week or two. But I really love it when I do…

You have toured with some pretty diverse acts, if you could curate your own perfect one day festival who would play?

We are curating the perfect one-day festival! Should be happening in Kortrijk, Belgium next year. Problem is definitely not going to be coming up with ideas, the problem will be agreeing on any, we all like different music.

Where haven’t you played that you want to play before you’re done?

When you put it that way it’s scary – I don’t ever plan to be done. We might be going to India next year…

What do Deerhoof know that we don’t know?

Probably nothing – certainly not anything about how to be in Deerhoof. That continues to be a total mystery…

1º Instalar libasound2-plugins:

sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins

Ting 10: Musikk

http://www.last.fm/listen/user/PGelisa/personal

Last FM is a web 2.0 'radio' web page. Combining the expanding social networking element that is gaining widespread popularity on the Internet with radio features similar to other music sites like Pandora that lets you hear music similar to your taste.

To use Last FM you just need to sign up a profile and choose a minimum of 15 artists you like in your profile library and you are good to go. As you listen to music from you library similar artists are suggested on the right hand side box. Furthermore, you can see who are also listening to the same music as you are and move onto their profile to see what else they like to listen to.

These features alone makes Last FM a great site if you want to find new music that you may like, but this is far from all there is to the site. When you go to an artist you have several options on the left hand panel where you can access Pictures, Videos, Album lists, Track lists (sorted by popularity), Biography's, Events, and much more. This site basically gives you all the functionality you could wish for and when you hear some music you would like to own you can fairly easy purchase it from the site. Moreover, some artists have chosen to make free music available for download as well.

If you have to point to something negative then at times the music you look for, are for some reason no longer available - but if you use it as a free service I really do not think you can complain about this fact.

So head on in to Last FM and sign up for an account.

It's been a while since I've written anything on here, mainly because I've been working my ass off at Apple and been crashing at my Grandparent's house and had no internet :-( boo!

I am however getting back into music making, working on a couple of things in Logic, just for fun but need the practice. Really need to update to Logic 8 but not sure it will run well on my 18 month old Macbook, may have to purchase a Macbook Pro or Imac I'm thinking (hint hint). Will upload the finished product at some point and link you all to it, which website is the best to do that? Last FM? Please discuss!

Found a cool website which will keep you all amused for a while:

A new song discovery this weekend (apart from Chris' new song on Sunday morning!) has been Keith Green's 'You are the One'. The version I heard (and prefer!) is Jason Upton singing it on the 'tribute' album Your Love Broke Through (Last FM, full track).

I particularly like the form of the verses:

I was so lost,
But you showed the way,
cause you are the way.
I was so lost,
But you showed the way to me.

I was lied to,
But you told the truth,
cause you are the truth.
I was lied to,
But you showed the truth to me.

I was dying,
But you gave me life,
cause you are the life.
I was dying,
And you gave your life for me.

Chorus:
How I love you,
You are the one,
You are the one.
How I love you,
You are the one for me.

Hallelujah,
You are the one,
God's risen Son,
Hallelujah,
You are the one for me.

CNet is reporting that the social networking giant, Facebook may be considering plans to launch an integrated music service to counter the upcoming launch of MySpace's own music strategy. Though the official Facebook replay to this is a "coy maybe", the social network would definitely be filling a void in online music once Pandora finally shuts down.

What makes this a great idea for Facebook? To start, it already has a huge built in user base. Pandora and Last FM both include a music social network option but due to their low user based (compared to Facebook and MySpace) the networking part is limited. Other, sites like Mog offer a musical social network but to fully take advantage of the service you need to be a paid member of Rhapsody.

Why Facebook can actually pull this off: They have boatloads of money. The RIAA has essentially put the smack down on online music streaming services. The fees the RIAA is charging online radio PER PLAY PER SONG dwarf the same fee they charge brick and mortar radio stations (who have more money anyway). This action has caused a vast majority of online radio services to start charging their users for the service. The ones not charging, have gone offline. The latest casualty of this practice is Pandora which has already stated it will shut down once it runs out of money to pay the fees.

Confidence is probably one of the top ten terms of corporate communications. Appears confidence in t

Confidence is probably one of the top ten terms of corporate communications. Appears confidence in the values, objectives, in campaigns in the portfolio of products and services, manuals and customer service in the plans of loyalty.

But confidence, like respect or moral authority, is something that we must win, and we can not win in other ways other than offering it and demonstration first. As simple and as complicated as well.
In traditional business models (which remain in force today, except very few exceptions), who hoped the trust and loyalty of its customers requires first a series of conditions. In return we ask that before we buy, or who subscribe, or give us your information. The customer pays first and then trusts. And so things have worked for so long that it does not seem logical to consider that another possible scenario.
Another scenario is possible. Another business model is possible. Another value chain, or chain of trust, is possible.

In customer confidence and content on the Web 2.0 we talked about blogs, social networks, communities circulars and consumer behaviour. Things are changing. We can be proactive or reactive, but things will change alike, the difference will be the consequences.

In late September 2007 someone dared to take a decisive step in this chain of Confidence. Someone who had something to sell what made the sale without a predetermined price. There was a promo, was not a claim was not misleading advertising. There was no trap in the proposal. And that someone was not an either someone in their sector. It was not a newcomer with nothing to lose, or a little with that risk. This is a sector turnover multimillionaire: music. This is one of the greats of the current music: Radiohead. With the launch of his album In Rainbows, Radiohead said: Pay what you want. Since the Web Radiohead could download the disc leaving the free will of the buyer to pay the price, and that price could well be "0". The downloads were multitudinarian and this is the best of all, the average price of what the sailors decided to pay for downloading on the disc were about 10 dollars. There were people who did not pay anything (very little), and others decided to pay what they felt that the product worth, or what they could afford. The initiative is a pioneer of Radiohead, daring, and is not alone.

In the restaurant sector there are some similar cases. The restaurant Deewan der Wien in Vienna, offers several daily menus in which the price of the drink is fixed, but by lunch customers can pay what they deem worth the menu. In Melbourne, the restaurant Lentil As Anything also offers this possibility, as well as the One World Cafe in Salt Lake City or Denver Coffee Same; latter also lets you choose the size of the portions you want to consume. Some of these restaurants is the case of Lentil As Anything Australian, has a clear vocation altruistic and explained that with this initiative, customers who choose to pay more may make it possible for those who can not afford to eat. In any case, none of them has closed its doors because the business has been crashed because the customers eat and do not pay, or pay so little that they can not cover costs and survive. That has not happened.

Following in the footsteps of Radiohead, Last fm, which was bought last year by CBS, announced in the U.S. and allowing UK, since late January, listen up to three times a song for free to users. So you can really assess whether he likes and wants to buy it. This is good news. Large companies already take into account that many problems are solved industry relying on users, not chasing.

Showing this cases, we just intend to reflect critically on the axioms of Business Models, on how these models are changing. We talk about supply markets, markets demand, pricing policies aimed at market, pricing policies aimed at costs, we talk, ultimately, how they built this abstract concept we call price. A price that become real in the consideration, measurable in legal tender, that someone must pay for access to the consumption of a product or use a service. Prices have a crucial impact on business plans and profit and loss account, resulting in box end, profits or losses. Prices are the thermometer that helps us to know how the consumer perceives the relationship between what we have to give and what they will get in return.

Thinking about price, service, trust, ultimately, on providing value, leads us to raise the role that companies, each according to their models and dynamic sector, playing in the value chain that will from production to delivery to basic consumer product or service produced. So far the consumer, the end customer, pays for everything. At each link in the chain the final price increases, but the value it does not necessarily.

Retailers, brokers, agglutination, facilitators… how are those roles when someone decides to break the rule, applying transparency, giving a voice to final customers by putting their hands in assessing what they will receive.

We could summarize it by saying: if you come to contribute something, tell me what they gave me and I value it, if I can stay interested in the chain, if not, there is no place for you.
The confidence is gained by opening doors and windows, do not earn hiding cryptic methodologies in black boxes that can not be opened. The trust is not won with speeches that prevent see what lies behind and, often, what they really contain is pure intermediation margins by adding artificial about the work of others. The customer appreciates the job, the customer knows appreciate the quality and profit. After all, we are all customers and none of us wants to pay more without knowing why and without knowing to whom.

Foto: Last.fm"][/caption]

Foto: MySpace do CD."][/caption]

What's In A Name

I was recently considering a change of identity. No, not some witness protection-style change of nam

I was recently considering a change of identity. No, not some witness protection-style change of name, face and address; but a change of alias related to my musical output. My 'sound' and working practices are constantly changing, so it seemed like a good idea to build up a new name and listener-base. In the end, I decided against it as I seem to have a decent enough (in my view, at least) number of listeners and plays on Last.fm, and to start all over again would mean I'd have to start at zero.

Likewise for my collaboration with Pixieguts. We've considered changing the name from 'Dementio13 Feat Pixieguts' (and the confusion between that name and Pix's and my own solo outputs) to a more 'band'-like alias which would reflect our music more concisely.

Anyway, it got me to thinking: does it matter what the name is? Surely its the music which matters.
But then, in music, as in many of the Arts, image and cultural-reference is everything.

I've written about this subject in part in the blog 'Twentieth Century Praxis Audio'. As part of my reminiscences, I mention the name of my eighties band The Red October Factory:

"Our band got christened sometime in early 1985, 'The Red October
Factory'. The name seemed perfect, it contained the word ‘Factory’ in
it for starters. But it also alluded to the Eastern Bloc (the real Red
October was a Russian factory that either produced warheads, or
chocolate, I can’t remember!) and all that that entailed. The name was
austere and industrial; everything we aspired to be musically."

Likewise, I mention elsewhere in the post 'The 10 Commandments Of Electronica':

"Your name will be without emotion or meaning.
An artist’s moniker is all important; it’s a statement of intent to
your listener…or not, in the case of electronica. Preferably your
artist name will be without any meaning to the average listener at all;
it will involve sheer nonsense (a made-up word such as, say, ‘Autechre‘), or the ultimate in geekery (involving the name of a piece of equipment, like ‘Aphex Twin‘), or, even better, it will involve numbers (’Prefuse 73‘).
By doing this, you are saying, “Listen to me, my music is
technological, it does not stir your emotions, in fact, it is cold and
harsh. It does not follow conventions and is difficult to understand.”
It can also be read as meaning, “My music is a puzzle. To me, as much
as it is to you….in fact, I just recorded a sequence of random noises,
fed it through a ring modulator and then got confused…”

You may, of course, use your own name….but only if you have a middle initial to give you extra kudos (Richard H Kirk)."

Pixiguts pointed out to me that the word "Head" has been part of the names of some very respected and successful bands:
Portishead; Radiohead; Severed Heads; Talking Heads....
Likewise with abbreviations:
DMX, DNA, LFO, ELO, and the ultimate in abbreviated aliases:

or 'Symbol' (The Artist Formerly Known As Prince)

Numbers also figure in some names to give credibility:

KRS1, Prefuse73, 808 State, Altern8, and some of my unsigned comrades - SK123 and D551 to name but two.

Its a mystery to me.......if you're a musician, I'd be interested to hear how you came across your name, and why.
